Suffolk Public Schools Partnerships 1 20092010 Annual Report Connecting to the Future, One Child at a Time
SUFFOLK PUBLIC SCHOOLS and COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS Suffolk Public Schools are enriched by the committed, supportive community of parents, volunteers, and business/community partners. Their involvement makes a difference in the quality of our city as well as our schools. Together we are preparing our students for life and work in the 21 st century. Fostering connections and building relationships, the Suffolk Public Schools Department of Public Information facilitates programs that promote the meaningful involvement of partners, volunteers, parents, and community members. These alliances improve student achievement through mutually beneficial relationships and shared resources. The relationships increase student motivation and provide access to new technology and information. Through the partnerships, the school’s resources are shared with the community allowing them to experience the many positive aspects of the schools, including educators’ and students’ creativity and talents. Our children learn that the Suffolk Community values public education and them. They also learn the importance that these organizations place on serving the Suffolk community. The school division’s commitment to supporting academic achievement through community partnership and involvement thrives as a result of the collective efforts of the division’s principals, teachers, parents, students, school partnership liaisons, PTA volunteer coordinators, Suffolk Education Foundation Board members and more. They truly are helping us to connect our students to the future, one child at a time.
Partners in Education The mission of this program is to develop an alliance between Suffolk Public Schools and the Suffolk business and civic community to enhance and enrich education by sharing knowledge, expertise and resources. Every activity is tied to the School Board Goal #1 to encourage higher achievement for all students. A Partners in Education partnership is a mutually supportive arrangement between a school and a business, government agency or community organization in which the parties commit to specific activities intended to benefit students, improve student achievement, and help accomplish school improvement goals. Each school has a partnership liaison who collaborates with other school personnel to nurture relationships that match the mutual needs and objectives of the school and the partner. In 200910, the school division enjoyed more than 119 documented partnerships which provided expanded material, financial, and/or human resources to support and enrich teaching and learning.
Volunteers in Education This program is facilitated in collaboration with the Suffolk Council of PTA’s to encourage and support parent and community engagement. Volunteers include parents, grandparents, business/community partners, community members, college students, K12 students, senior citizens, and military servicemen and women. In 200910, more than 1,346 volunteers donated more than 14,006 hours of service working in a variety of capacities in the division’s schools. This service is valued at nearly $292,025.00, based on the Independent Sector Organization’s dollar value of volunteer service ($20.85 an hour in 2009).

Partners in Education Message from Superintendent, Milton R. Liverman, Ed.D. Greetings, On behalf of the School Board, administration, staff and students of Suffolk Public Schools, I want to thank you for all you have done this year and through the years to help make our schools better. As you know, this is likely to be my last time greeting you in this manner. While I am excited about writing the next chapter in my life, I will miss many of the people I have come to know, respect and count on here is Suffolk Public Schools. I want you to know that you are among the group that I shall miss. You are a special group. You are not employees but you are as faithful in your commitments to the schools and the children as our employees. You are here because you want to make a difference in the lives of young people and you have. You are here because you have talents, skills, experiences and other gifts to share, and we thank you for that. You are here because you know we cannot do this important work alone, and we welcome you for that. Please know that we value all of our partners and our partnerships. We have come a long way in the past several years. We recognize that much of what we have accomplished is the result of support from the people in this room. Reflecting on this day, I am reminded of the words of Sir Edmund Burke ... “Society is indeed a contract. It is a partnership in all science; a partnership in all art; a partnership in every virtue, and in all perfection. As the ends of such a partnership cannot be obtained in many generations, it becomes a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead, and those who are to be born.” My friends, understand that much of what you do today will continue to touch lives well after we are all gone. That is one of the great things about working with children. We have the opportunity to change not just the now but also to change the future. With your partnerships we have made a difference in the now and the future. Zora Nell Hurston wrote something to the effect: “The eyes of the future are looking back on us”. I know that when the eyes of the future judge our actions as partners, the assessment will be: “Well Done!”

Suffolk Education Foundation Overview for 200910 To enhance academic achievement by mobilizing the community to marshal the talent and resources of parents, citizens, and businesses to strengthen every Suffolk public school. The Suffolk Education Foundation was founded in 1993 as an independent, communitybased nonprofit organization focused on assisting the staff and students of Suffolk Public Schools. Over the years, the Foundation has awarded close to a half million dollars to build Suffolk’s future by providing scholarship awards, instructional grants, tuition assistance for students, and employee recognition. More than just a funding intermediary, the SEF is uniquely positioned to help establish community support that will yield major contributions, sponsorships, and partnerships. The Suffolk Education Foundation can engage the business community to “invest” in the educational system that subsequently produces a viable workforce, where the return on the investment is measured by the availability of quality trained workers. The Suffolk Education Foundation solicits the financial support of school personnel, students, and parents; businesses and trust funds; civic groups and churches; as well as retired citizens and other residents through memorial gifts and estates. Fundraising events are planned each year such as a golf tournament and the State of the Schools reception. Anyone interested in contributing to the Suffolk Education Foundation can send their taxdeductible donation to P.O. Box 394, Suffolk VA 234390394.

20092010 Partnership of the Year – Nansemond River Baptist Church Nansemond River Baptist Church was named as the 200910 Partnership of the Year for Suffolk Public Schools. Nansemond River Baptist Church is a partner with the students of Creekside Elementary School. In August 2009, approximately 60 book bags filled with school supplies for various grade levels were delivered to Creekside Elementary School by employees and members of Nansemond River Baptist Church. From that beginning, Nansemond River Baptist has assisted many students at Creekside Elementary School through a student mentoring program. Nansemond River Baptist Church, located at 2896 Bridge Road in north Suffolk, has more than 200 members in its congregation. Since February, ten to 15 mentors from the church, trained through the Virginia Mentoring Program, have devoted time weekly to assist with selected Creekside students. Each visit lasted from 30 minutes to an hour. Not only did the Nansemond River Baptist Church mentors take part in recess with the class, they also connected with all students through handson learning in the classroom and served as chaperones on field trips. Mentors helped students in improving behaviors, promoted a more positive selfesteem, provided focus objectives for the day, or sometimes simply listened and talked about everyday happenings.
