Chair's Message Another winter has finally passed and we all look forward to a warm and vibrant spring and summer. This past winter, volunteers from the local chapter have been hard at work delivering events and performing education outreach activities with our local schools. The events included a wonderful dinner and dance at the Idylwylde to celebrate the holidays, a technical speaker’s night at Collège Boréal, a curling bonspiel complete with spills and thrills (helmets anyone?), a hugely successful hockey tournament, and an action packed bridge building (and breaking) contest with local students. During the past year as Chair, I have often been asked what purpose the Chapter system serves within the PEO. This has been a topic within the Association for quite some time and only recently has the Chapter system been formally recognized by the Association with the passing of By-Law No.1. The essential purpose of the Chapters is Policy and Communications through the following initiatives: 1. Enhance a local presence for the engineering profession throughout Ontario. 2. Provide an introduction and training for professional engineers who want to 1

participate in the statutory functions of the profession. 3. Provide timely and current information to licence holders. 4. Provide an active communication link between the membership and Council with regards to: a. PEO Policy Development; b. Succession Planning for PEO Leadership; and c. PEO and Chapter Budget Planning. 5. Provide a forum for the local discussion of professional and civic affairs. 6. Enhance the professional development, competency, and social responsibility of professional engineers. 7. Serve as an information resource for professional engineers, the public and society. 8. Promote public awareness of the engineering profession in the local community. 9. Provide a local point of contact for the community to access information on the profession and Engineering. 10.Promote participation of licence holders in Chapter activities and PEO committees. 11.Promote recognition of individuals or firms for their support of the profession. The Sudbury Chapter, through its numerous volunteers and events, fulfills the essential purposes extremely well. Without the dedication and hard work of these people who often have to juggle busy professional and personal lives, the vibrancy of the local engineering profession would certainly be diminished. One such contributor, Engineer Tony Cecutti, was recently inducted as a member of the Order of Honour at the 2005 PEO Annual General Meeting in London. Congratulations Tony!!! The summer months will also be busy with the Sudbury Annual General Meeting on May 25th and the PEO Golf Classic in July. I look forward to seeing the many faces which make our local Chapter one of the more successful in the province. There are many challenges facing the profession in the coming months and years including demand side legislation, continuing competency, value and relevance of the licence, and increasing the public’s confidence in the profession. Our continued involvement within the Association, and in society at large, is an obligation every Engineer should take seriously. To this end, I encourage all Engineers to become active and participate in forums and discussions that will shape our profession and ultimately society as a whole. To conclude, I wish all of you a warm and happy spring, and hope to see you soon. Warm Regards Mike Watters, P.Eng., MBA PEO Sudbury Chapter Chair 2

Recent Events National Engineering Week Dinner (February 23, 2005) The 2nd Annual National Engineering Week Dinner with Guest Speaker was a resounding success. Collège Boréal, in cooperation with the Professional Engineers Ontario (Sudbury Chapter), welcomed 300 guests to the event (including: engineers, technologists, technicians, students of all ages, and the general public). The guest speaker, Mr. Robert Saunders of the Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Canada, wowed the crowd with his keynote address about the Avro Arrow Model Recovery Program. All were very impressed by his dedication and his passion for the Avro Arrow. The night included a cocktail hour, delicious dinner, keynote address, presentation of 6 new P.Eng. licenses, and networking session. Students revelled in the opportunity to meet engineers/technologists who work in their field of study.

PEO Hockey Tournament (April 8-10, 2005) The Eighth Annual PEO Hockey tournament was a great success. We had the most teams ever – 16, with two teams from Timmins, one from Matheson, one from Toronto, one from North Bay, one from London and the remainder from Sudbury. The games were played at two rinks over three days, with about 240 skaters. All players were given T-shirts embroidered with "PEO" on the breast. Friday night socializing was done in the basement of Ugi's Restaurant on Douglas St., where players enjoyed beverages to wash down complimentary pizza. The Saturday night banquet also broke an attendance record with 170 people coming for a great meal at Bridges Restaurant in the Quality Inn on Elgin St. Unanimous voting dictated that no winner would be selected this year, where the teams skills were matched as close as possible and the games played for the fun of the game and to get some exercise, not to mention getting together with old friends. The Falco Diggers were the only team to go undefeated. TD Meloche Monnex, who provide insurance services to engineers, and Marathon Drilling, who provide horizontal and vertical drilling services, were the two major tournament sponsors. Without their generous financial contributions, the tournament would not be played. Dan Cacciotti, P.Eng., of AMEC Earth & Environmental organized the tournament and Molson's provided hockey bags which were raffled away at the banquet.

WISE Science Olympics (April 16, 2005) The 6th Annual WISE Science Olympics were held on April 16th at Collège Boréal and welcomed more than 120 girls in grades 4 to 7 from the Sudbury area. The full day of activities included team events based on disciplines such as mechanical, safety/industrial, mining, and chemical engineering. The students loved it and are all looking forward to signing up for next year's event.

Sudbury Engineer Receives PEO Order of Honour On Saturday, April 16, 2005, Sudbury Professional Engineer Tony Cecutti, P.Eng., was invested as a Member into The Professional Engineers of Ontario Order of Honour. The gala ceremony was held in London, Ontario, at the conclusion of the Professional Engineers of Ontario’s Annual General Meeting, and was attended by over 200 engineers and guests from across the Province and engineering dignitaries from across Canada. The Order of Honour was established to recognize professional engineers, and others, who have rendered conspicuous service to the profession in Ontario. The Sudbury Chapter of The Professional Engineers of Ontario congratulates Tony on his receipt of this honour, and thanks him for his many years of service to our community.

Upcoming Events Stay Connected! The Sudbury Chapter has an electronic mailing list that is used to notify members of upcoming events. Only about 300 of the Chapter's 800 members are subscribed to the list. If you aren't subscribed, you could be missing out on exciting events. The last email that was sent out was on February 10. The “sender” was “PEO Sudbury Chapter ”. If you didn't get it, you're probably not on the list. If you want to be added, send an email to [email protected] and ask to be subscribed to the Sudbury Chapter mailing list.

AGM The Sudbury Chapter Annual General Meeting will be held at 6 PM on Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at the Willet Green Miller Centre (933 Ramsey Lake Road). The evening activities are still being finalized, but we are considering a buffet table, socializing, and a tour of MIRARCO's Virtual Reality Lab. More information will be sent through the Sudbury Chapter electronic mailing list, or you can call Peter 4

Richards at 692-0937 (leave a message if no answer).

PEO Golf Classic The 13th Annual PEO Golf Classic is scheduled for mid-July. Watch for details of the event via the Sudbury Chapter electronic mailing list in early May, or call D.J. Hare at 675-1233 or Shawn Scott at 560-5555.
