Studying Film and Media at RTSFC Media Studies In Media Studies you will look at a wide range of media texts from different industries, including film, television, advertising, music and computer games. We pride ourselves on analysing challenging and contemporary media texts throughout AS and A-Level, preparing students for the rigours of higher education by applying theoretical perspectives to these texts. “Richard Taunton’s has allowed me to realise my love for English Literature and to pursue a teaching career specialising in English. I really enjoyed the trip to London to see the Bollywood adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and the teaching has been exceptional.” Amy Hotston, formerly Romsey School, now training to become a primary school teacher with an English specialism at the University of Reading

Studying English at RTSFC English Literature If you’re a keen reader with an interest in literature, this course is designed for you. Studying English Literature will allow you to discover new authors and look at those you already love from a different perspective. The course involves the critical analysis of a wide range of literary texts, from drama to poetry and plays to novels. You will become a confident reader of a range of texts and will learn to apply critical concepts to literature, expressing your responses in a skilled manner using new terminology. Each lesson is different: students will discuss and debate literary topics as well as have the opportunity to develop their own writing. Our classes provide a friendly environment for students to collaborate, sharing ideas and inspiration. There are also opportunities for independent and group work. There are opportunities for trips to the cinema and theatre, as well as a trip to Stratford Upon Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. English Language This course explores the mystery of the English Language and the spoken, written and electronic word. You will learn how children acquire language and how to analyse different forms of language. There are also opportunities for you to write creatively in a variety of editorial formats. Students have the opportunity to attend the annual English Language A-Level conference held in London. In previous years, speakers have included author Michael Rosen, linguist Deborah Cameron and Professor of Linguistics David Crystal, who present interesting talks on topics such as forensic linguistics and how language has changed over time.

Studying Languages at RTSFC At Richard Taunton’s we have a vibrant languages department, giving students the opportunity to develop their knowledge of French, Spanish and Italian. We also offer the opportunity for students to achieve qualifications in their mother tongue, including A-Level Polish, Punjabi, Russian and Portuguese. If you are a talented linguist, you can fast-track Spanish and Italian at GCSE (even if you have no prior knowledge of the subject) with the opportunity to complete our very successful fast-track programme for languages at AS-Level. In 2014 we had a stunning 100% success rate in languages at all levels, with all students achieving the top grades in French, Spanish and Italian A-Level. A second language is highly valued by universities and increases your employability. We have a high success rate of students progressing to study languages at university, with 50% of our 2014 students now studying languages at higher level. We believe that visits abroad are vital to learning a language, and we are the only local sixth form college to regularly organise foreign exchange trips with our partner schools in Gaillac (France) and Pamplona in Spain. These trips allow students to develop their cultural awareness and linguistic competence, as well as increasing their self-confidence.
