Together with leading academics in the field of project and programme management, we want to explore the latest academic thinking on the challenges of IT projects and IT-enabled transformation as well as ways to make your project more successful. Together we have planned three exciting days at the University of Oxford, and we hope that you will join us for this exciting opportunity. CONTRIBUTORS Bent Flyvbjerg is the first BT Professor and founding Chair of Major Programme Management at University of Oxford and the Founding Director of University of Oxford’s BT Centre for Major Programme Management. Bent is a leading international expert within the field of programme management and planning, perhaps best known for his book Megaprojects and risk – An anatomy of ambition, widely considered as essential reading for project managers, sponsors and those involved in megaprojects. Bent is the most cited scholar in his field and his ideas on optimism bias (the tendency to take an overly positive view of planned actions) and strategic misrepresentation (deliberately misstating the likely outcomes of actions) have been incorporated into project evaluation techniques around the world. Bent continues to influence the development of project management both through his research and through teaching some of the leading programme managers of today and tomorrow. Bent has worked as a consultant to project owners, regulators, corporations, banks, national audit offices, the EU Commission and the United Nations and has been adviser to the UK, Dutch and Danish governments in formulating national policies for infrastructure, environment, transportation and science. His books and articles have been translated into 19 languages, and his research has been covered by Science, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times,

The New York Times, The BBC and many others. He has received numerous honours and awards, including two Visiting Fulbright Scholarships to the USA, where he did research at the University of California at Los Angeles and Berkeley and at Harvard University. In 2002, Bent was knighted in the Order of the Dannebrog. Bent holds a PhD from Aarhus University, Denmark, and two higher doctorates from Aalborg University in engineering (dr.techn.) and science (dr.scient.), respectively. He is a Professorial Fellow of St Anne’s College, Oxford. Alexander Budzier is a Researcher at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School. He is working on understanding and preventing megaprojects from turning into black swans with massive cost overruns and long delays. Prior to coming to the University of Oxford, Alexander worked as a consultant with McKinsey in Düsseldorf and Chicago. At Oxford, he teaches on the MSc for Major Programme Management. He is the Director of the UK Government’s Project Leadership Programme, which he designs and facilitates. He is also a teacher at the Major Project Leadership Academy, a leadership development programme for the top 300 project managers in the UK civil service. Alexander has been invited to contribute op-eds, guest lectures and key notes to practitioner and academic audience. Alexander received his PhD from the University of Oxford.

Atif Ansar is a Departmental Lecturer at the Blavatnik School of Government and also works at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. Atif’s research examines energy projects and the challenges of project leadership. In particular, he studies option thinking in projects and the role of time. Prior to joining the University of Oxford, Atif worked as a consultant for the World Bank. He holds a PhD from the University of Oxford.
