BY MRS. ALLISON DEGRAAF

Dear Kennedy Families, The first trimester has flown by! It seems like we were just attending parent orientation a few weeks ago and here we are with the winter and cold weather sneaking up on us. With the change in weather we want to emphasize several important winter weather reminders. Please review the winter weather reminders included in our newsletter. I would like to thank parents for attending conferences at the end of October. This was a wonderful opportunity to share information between families and teachers. We had great parent participation with over 99% of our parents attending. We appreciate your support in continuing to build a strong partnership between home and school.

Office Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Breakfast Club: 7:45 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. Students should use the rear entrance SAFETY ALERT! Breakfast Club students must not arrive at school before 7:45 a.m. Students not attending Breakfast Club may not arrive before 8:05 a.m.

In December we are looking forward to our Kennedy School Winter Sing programs. Mrs. Van Tassell and Mrs. Herzog have been working diligently with our K-5 students to prepare for the programs. The students are very proud and excited to share the performances with their families. We look forward to seeing many of our Kennedy families at the Winter Sings on December 18th. Please check our Kennedy website and newsletter for the winter sing times for each grade level. In the near future, the School District of Janesville will be installing security cameras at Kennedy Elementary. The cameras will be primarily placed outdoors near school door exits where safety and security issues have been documented by the School District of Janesville, Kennedy Elementary, and the Janesville Police Department. Cameras will also be installed inside some areas of the building to monitor secluded areas and other areas of the building where data collected by Kennedy Elementary shows a need for closer monitoring. Cameras will not be placed inside of classrooms, the health office, or restrooms. The security cameras will be activated by motion only and will not have sound recording capabilities. The cameras will only be reviewed when a safety or security issue has been brought to building administration attention, School District of Janesville administration attention, and/or the Janesville Police Department’s attention. Video viewing of any alleged incidents will also only be allowed by these three parties. It is our hope that all of you have a wonderful winter break and enjoy time with your family and friends. While the holiday season is often filled with excitement and joy, it can also be stressful for parents with added pressure for gifts and presents. Please remember the best gift you can give your child at anytime during the year is the gift of your time. Find some time over the winter break to play a board game, read a book, watch a special movie or put together a puzzle. It doesn’t take money to build special memories with your child, but it does take time, and that is the best gift you can give your child this year- time to do something together. Together we make a difference for our students. Thus, I am thankful and celebrate this holiday season not only with the staff, but with parents and community members too! Keep enjoying the journey of education with your child. I am more than thankful to be part of their lifelong journey in education. Sincerely, Mrs. DeGraaf

PBIS NEWS What is PBIS? What is PBIS? It stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. The goal of the system is to teach students what the expectations are for their behaviors throughout the school day and in all school settings. Kennedy School has gotten off to a great start!  All students have participated in “Behavior Stations!” There were five stations that classes visited including hallways, lunchroom, bathrooms, arrival/dismissal, and playground. Many staff members participated in showing the kids what NOT to do, teaching the students the expectations, and facilitating student practice of those expectations. Classroom teachers are also training their students in other areas of the building and the playground. Each special area teacher is training for his/her own classroom. Students then used their passports to record the completion of training. Filled passports earn students a special Kennedy necklace with a charm! (More charms will be coming throughout the school year.)  Every classroom at Kennedy is continuing to use the “colors” behavior management system to help students monitor their own choices throughout the day. Students have “clips” that are moved per adult direction throughout the day. Movement is based on individual student behavior choices. Families should be asking students, “What color was your day?” Communication will be sent home when students are making exceptional choices, as well as when they are needing those extra reminders.  Students are being acknowledged for “the good stuff” as often as possible. When any staff member sees a student following the Kennedy rules of be safe, be respectful, and be responsible, he/she MAY give the student a Red Rocket Ticket. (Researchers call this “intermittent reinforcement” and it has been shown as an effective way to teach behaviors!) Those tickets are going into a collection spot and there are regular opportunities for prizes. The students love it….and the staff enjoys giving all of the positive messages. Classes can earn “rocket boosters” when they are making good choices as a collective group; when the class earns 10 “boosters” they are eligible for a prize.  Students will continue to receive monthly Character Awards at Kennedy. Teachers will select those students who are acting as examples of our three expectations: be safe, be respectful, and be responsible. Students will receive school-wide recognition, an award, and a charm for their Kennedy necklace. If families have any questions about the PBIS system, please speak with your child’s teacher or you can call Mrs. Bembinster at 743-7548. We are always looking for positive ideas and prize donations. Thank you for all that you do to support Kennedy School and your child’s learning.

BAND NEWS

BY MRS. RUSH, INSTRUCTOR

As I'm sure you have heard in your student's practicing at home, the Kennedy band is starting to sound great. We can play five notes now, and that allows us to play songs that actually sound like music we recognize. As we continue to move forward, we can look forward to performances in the second half of the school year. The Kennedy band will soon be getting ready to play at Mini Pep Band. This is a fun activity where 5th grade band students get to perform with the Craig Pep Band at a basketball game. This year, Mini Pep Band will be on Thursday, January 14 at 6:00 pm. Notes and permission slips will be coming home with your students soon. Please make sure your students permission slip and t-shirt money (optional) are turned in by December 22.

ORCHESTRA NEWS

BY MS. HELING, INSTRUCTOR

The Kennedy orchestra is starting to prepare for their winter concert that will be held at Marshall Middle School on Wednesday, December 9th at 7:00pm. The fifth grade students will open for the 6th-8th grade orchestra concert that night. The concert will feature some well known songs as well as some traditional violin songs. A huge part in their concert preparation has been working on notes and getting their left hand fingers in the right place on their instrument, but aside from their left hand work, they have just started the BOW! At the beginning of the bow process its very important that the students are just working with open strings and NOT working on music quite yet, this will happen in the following lessons leading up to the concert. Thank you for supporting your students in orchestra, they are doing a great job!

CAMPBELL, PE INSTRUCTOR

Recap of activities in “gym” class:

Please help and work with your child to learn to tie their shoes. Tying in a double knot would be especially helpful.

In the beginning of November we were using the set of “BOSU’s” that travel to all 12 elementary schools in Janesville. Each student used a BOSU by themselves and worked on the following areas; aerobics, balance, and strength. Ask your child about the BOSU’s and what activity was their favorite. After BOSU’s we had our Basketball unit working on ball handling skills; (dribble, pass and shoot). That was the end of the 1st trimester! The P.E. units starting our 2nd trimester in December and January are; The Heart Adventure Course (An obstacle course is set-up for the students to go through as “blood cells” and follow the path our blood takes when traveling through the heart.), Bowling at “Kennedy Bowling Lanes” All classes work on underhand throws, 4th and 5th graders work on scoring, our 3rd graders have a “STRIKE” contest and 2nd grade play Bingo Bowl on the last day, Holiday games (cooperation with others), Apparatus (Climbing, balance beam, bars and vault) and Tumbling (rolls and cartwheels), Dance, and Snow shoes (for the 4th and 5th graders). It’s getting colder out and darker sooner, but everyone still needs to stay active! Challenge your child to do some sit-ups, push-ups or even 100 jumping jacks!! Kids, challenge your parents or older siblings to do “different” kinds of sit-ups and push-ups! 4th and 5th graders, can dad do “Spiderman” push-ups?? Ways to stay active at home: going for a walk playing catch shoveling snow sledding ice skating Some ideas for Christmas gifts are: hula hoops, jump ropes, any type of ball, rollerblades, and BOSU’s. Let’s keep our children active and healthy! Remember: 7 DAYS WITHOUT EXERCISE MAKES ONE “WEAK”! Mrs. Campbell

Second Friday Count Twice each year the School District of Janesville has to take an accurate count of students enrolled in our schools. Friday, January 8, 2016 will be one of those days. It is important for all students to be in attendance on that day if it is possible. This count determines how much state funding we receive for the education of the children in our district. We ask that you help us with this important attendance issue.

UW– Whitewater Three Excellent Cows Play at Kennedy On October 27th, Kennedy students got to experience live theatre at Kennedy. UW-Whitewater students performed the play Three Excellent Cows for our entire student body. Three Excellent Cows is the story of three friends who, with the help of a good narrator and the power of frozen yogurt, take on every disappointment, discouragement, and disaster the barnyard throws at them, and learn that making a dream come true takes a little more work than sitting on a fence and wishing for your fairy godchicken to arrive. Three Excellent Cows helps remind us all that even though we may be different, we all have something to give to the world.

A Message from the Academic Learning Coach Hello, we had a great first trimester here at Kennedy. Thank you for attending your student’s parent teacher conferences where your student’s teacher shared results from their first STAR assessment taken in September. Students will be again taking the STAR Reading and Math assessment in January shortly after coming back from winter break and results will be made available to you shortly after they are completed. Your child’s teacher and I are always available and happy to answer any questions you may have about this new assessment. Also, coming up in December, all 2nd grade students will be taking the CogAT assessment. This is a thirty-minute assessment that is utilized to help teachers understand a student’s problem-solving and reasoning skills. The CogAT assessment analyzes students’ strengths and areas of growth in these areas. If your child is in 2nd grade, a letter will be coming home soon to explain in more detail what the assessment will measure and when it will be given. I hope you all have a relaxing and enjoyable Winter Break. Continuing some school routines during longer breaks helps your child to retain and build skills that they have worked so hard to learn these first few months of school. Remember to engage in some kind of reading every day. The best story times are interactive when you and your child are talking about the story. One good way to remember to read in an interactive way is by using the PEER method. P: Prompt your child with a question about the story. Prompting your child focuses attention, engages the child in the story, and helps the child understand the book. Point to something in the picture, for example, a balloon. "What is that?" E: Evaluate your child's response. "That's right! That's a balloon." E: Expand on what your child said. "That's a big, red balloon! We saw one of those in the grocery store yesterday." R: Repeat or revisit the prompt you started with, encouraging your child to use the new information you've provided. "Can you say big, red balloon?" Each time the book is reread, the expanded vocabulary words are verbalized again. This can be done with older students as well. Engaging students in a dialog will increase your child’s oral language skills, and are more likely to be exposed to new words. Most importantly, always keep reading and learning engaging and fun at home!

TAG News Hello families, we have had a very busy first trimester with our TAG and Enrichment students. Students have been invited to participate in the Noetic Math contest, as well as regularly working on the Noetic Math Challenge problems during the school day. Some students have also been working diligently on their Southern Lakes Anthology Writing/Art pieces. Coming up in December and January, all 2nd grade students will be taking the CogAT assessment. For students in grades 3-5, the Delta Kappa Gamma writing contest will also be taking place in December and January.

WINTER WEATHER REMINDERS As the weather continues to change and the cold weather approaches we have a few reminders for student safety at Kennedy: All students go outside twice each day for recess and lunch recess. Winter clothing is necessary every day. This should include a warm winter coat, hat, and gloves or mittens. Younger students (K-2) must have snow pants and boots on in order to go into the snow. Older students (3-5) should have boots or they will need to stay on the blacktop. If their clothing gets wet they will not be allowed to call home. We use a temperature and wind chill factor of 0 degrees or below to determine if students stay indoors . If it is before school, these same temperatures determine whether or not students can come into the building at 8:05 a.m. If it is raining or snowing in the morning when students come to school, they are to go to their playground doors to line up - not the front doors. There are staff members on the playgrounds for supervision at 8:05 a.m. and will let student in and direct them where they should go until the bell rings. Winter can present challenges for driving. Please remember to pull over to the stop-drop-go curb to pick up and drop off your child. Please do not park your car in this area or near any of the cones. We want to continue to keep students safe in the ice and snow. We will continue to work with the Janesville Police Department to monitor the traffic in the front and back stop-drop-go areas. A reminder to our families about weather related closing and delays notification. The Campus Messenger system will serve as our primary means of notification. We urge you to make sure the school has your current contact information. On days when there are possible school cancellations due to weather please listen to WCLO (AM 1230) or other local radio and TV stations for school closings and delays. Closing and delays will be posted no later than 6:00 a.m. If schools have a one hour delay, we will have adult supervision at 9:05 a.m. Elementary breakfast clubs will not serve meals when school has been delayed. Schools do not close early to avoid incoming snow or ice storms. This policy is to protect children who may get home before their parents and have no access to supervision at home. There will be no athletic contests and practices on days school is called off for weather reasons. They gyms will be closed. Parents always have the option of keeping your child home due to inclement weather. You must call school to report your decision to keep your child home. Thank you for helping us continue to keep students safe during the winter months!

If your student will be taking medication at school this year (prescription and/or over the counter, please stop in the office to pick up a Medication Consent Form and drop off the medicine. All students taking prescription medications at school MUST have a new Medication Consent Form each year, signed by both the parent and the prescribing physician. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our school health aide, Kim Gergets at 743-7565.

Child Find Notice “The school district must locate, identify and evaluate all resident children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disabilities.” The school district has a special education program to locate and screen all children with suspected disabilities who are residents of the district and who have not graduated from high school. Upon request the school district will screen any resident child who has not graduated high school to determine whether a special education referral is appropriate. A request may be made by contacting Barbara Kelley, Supervisor of Special Education Services for the School District of Janesville at 7435061, or by writing her at 527 S. Franklin St., Janesville WI 53548. Annually the district conducts developmental screening of preschool children. Each child’s motor, communication and social skills are observed at various play areas. Each child is weighed and measured, and the child’s hearing and vision is checked. The information is used to provide the parent with a profile of their child’s current development and to provide suggestions for follow up activities. Parents learn about community services available to them and speak with representatives of agencies serving families. The information from screening is also used to determine whether a child should be evaluated for a suspected disability. When school staff reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability, they refer the child for evaluation by a school district Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Developmental screening will be a part of the kindergarten screening this Spring. Watch for dates at your local school. A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to report the child to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child’s parents that the referral will be made. The referral must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. Others who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability may also refer the child to the school district in which the child resides. A referral of a child residing in the School District of Janesville may be sent to Barbara Kelley at the school district address above.”

Public School Open Enrollment Timelines

The State of Wisconsin has announced the application period for open enrollment (also known as public school choice) begins in February for the following school year. Open Enrollment laws permit children to attend a public school in a school district other than the one in which they live. The open enrollment application period for the 2015-2016 school year is from February 2, 2015 – April 30, 2015. Parents are encouraged to apply on-line at https://www2.dpi.state.wi.us/ OpenEnrollApp. Although on-line application is recommended, paper applications may be obtained from the Department of Public Instruction or any school district after January 15, 2015 and must be delivered (hand-delivery is recommended) to the nonresident school district during the application period. Paper applications to attend Janesville must be submitted to the Administrative Services Department no later than 4:00 p.m. on April 30th (a postmark does not constitute timely submission). Applications turned in prior to February 2nd will be returned as not valid and must be resubmitted after February 2nd but before April 30th. Enrollment in a requested school or program is subject to space and other limitations and is not guaranteed. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent. Under School District of Janesville board policy, students who attended the district under open enrollment the previous year are not required to reapply for the following school year, unless they will be entering middle school. An application is required for each sibling in the family. For example, if a family has one child in elementary school that has been approved for open enrollment and a new student entering kindergarten next year, the student entering kindergarten must apply for open enrollment in order to attend the School District of Janesville. Parents will be informed in June whether their open enrollment applications have been approved or denied. The student’s school or program placement will be provided in June. If you have questions, please contact the Administrative Services Office at 743-5006.
