Principal’s Report

ANZAC Day On Monday 25th April we commemorate ANZAC Day. A march will be held in Drouin at 10.30 am and will lead to the cenotaph where the ANZAC service will be held. Teachers and students have been talking about and learning about ANZAC in various ways over the past week. Some have held ceremonies, made wreaths, cooked ANZAC biscuits and read stories about the ANZACs. It is often difficult as a parent or teacher to know the best way to deal with some of the sensitive issues such as war and death that come up in trying to understand the importance of ANZAC Day in our calendar. I have found a great list of ideas that parents can use when discussing ANZAC Day with children. These ideas include: IDEAS FOR LEARNING ABOUT ANZAC DAY  Focus on the collective pride of the country.  The spirit of ANZAC through courage, mateship and sacrifice.  Talk about the freedom we have to feel safe because of their sacrifice.  Talk about caring about each other and the world as a whole.  Let them ask the questions, be open to their ideas on what they think it was about and guide them gently to the truth.  Numbers can be overwhelming, especially for school aged kids who learn how many soldiers lost their lives. Follow this sad realisation with the reinforcement of how they did this to keep our country safe, that this is why we live in such a peaceful place today, how thankful we are to them.  Have a moment of silence in honour of those who fought so hard for our freedom, holding hands as a family.  For older children a dawn service may also be appropriate or the city parade to see the collective pride of the community. Depending on the age and comprehension of your toddler, visuals are a great tool. There are lots of books and visual resources available with younger audiences in mind to explain war and related themes. DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE Drouin Secondary College is holding an orientation/information day for all Year 6 students to experience a day as a secondary college student. This will be held on Thursday 5th May. Students have been provided with information about the day and we hope that all Year 6 students take up the opportunity to attend. There is also a parent information evening for parents of students in Years 5 and 6 on the evening of 5th May from 7.00pm to 9.30pm in the college auditorium. ATHLETICS Good luck to our 20 students who have qualified for the Divisional Athletics Carnival to be held in Newborough on 27th April. MOTHERS DAY STALL A big thank you to all of the PFF crew who planned, set up and ran the Mothers Day Stall. The kids had a great time selecting their gifts for mum and the funds raised mean a great deal to the school. I just hope all of the chocolates make it home to mum!! WORLD OF MATHS The WOM incursion was held today and involved all students from Prep-6. Students were encouraged to solve a variety of puzzles through a range of activities using lots of different objects for learning. Days such as these help to motivate students and provide different opportunities to enhance student learning. 2

District Athletics Day 2016 Last week on the 13th April, 52 Drouin South Athletes went to the Geoff Watt Reserve to compete against 7 other schools in a variety of Athletic events. The students were very well-behaved and again demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship! As you can see from the results below, we had tremendous success with 20 of these students moving on to the next stage (Division). I thank every student who went, for their exemplary conduct and efforts in all their individual events. Thank you also to the parents who came to support their children and our school, as well as their assistance at events. A very big thank you to the other Drouin South Staff who came along and helped: Ms Wendy McLean, Mr Denby Moore, & Ms Pentland. The day was very successful and thoroughly enjoyable because of all the positiveness and assistance. We look forward now to the Division Athletics, on Wednesday 27th April. Lawrence Phillips – P.E. OSHC Report:

Last term at OSHC we had a two day visit from The Department for our Assessment and Rating visit. Over the Holidays we received our report and results for our visit and we are pleased to share that DSPS Outside School Hours Care did very well! There are 5 levels that Children’s services are rated against; Significant Improvement Required, Working Towards National Quality Standard, Meeting National Quality Standard, Exceeding National Quality Standard and Excellent rating. We are happy to say that we are Meeting Quality Standard. We have put together a wall at OSHC of how and what we have to do to achieve this rating. If you would like to have a look at our report and how we work and plan to provide the best care and experiences possible for your children, please find our report on the large Art Room/Canteen door. We would also like to congratulate the children who attended BSC and OSHC on these days, you brought a smile to not only your Educators faces but also to the Assessors. You showed both Jane and Rowina how amazingly talented you all are! Thank you to our families who have and continue to provide us with valuable resources and feedback to better our service and who also enjoy having a chat with our Educators on drop-off and pick-up. I would also like to say a personal thank you to our Early Childhood Educators; Courtney, Ashley and Brooke who have worked so hard with myself to provide our kids at OSHC the best care and experiences possible. If there are any parents who would like any more information on our Assessment, please feel free to come and chat with me.
