At the end of this session you will be able to:

1. 2. 3.

• Identify key resources available on EngageNY to gather assessment data and calculate HEDI outcomes. • Analyze student and teacher performance data using available SLO closeout tools.

• Reflect on SLO results to inform instructional decisions and approaches.

3

Four Phases of the SLO Process

4

Purposes of SLOs

Focus on student outcomes

Vehicle for continuous improvement

Make connections between instruction and learning

Foster enhanced teaching practices

5

SLO Results Analysis Phase Thinking strategically about the Results Analysis phase of the SLO process offers important benefits for instructional planning.

Results Analysis 1. Administer the summative assessments. Closeout

2. Gather summative assessment results (score and record). 3. Calculate outcomes and translate to HEDI scores.

Reflection

4. Organize, review, and reflect on data to inform classroom, school-wide, and district-wide decisions around student academic goals and instructional decisions.

6

SLO Closeout: Administration of Assessments and Collection of Results Results Analysis

1. Administer the summative assessments. Closeout

2. Gather summative assessment results (score and record). 3. Calculate outcomes and translate to HEDI scores.

Reflection

4. Organize, review, and reflect on data to inform classroom, school-wide, and district-wide decisions around student academic goals and instructional decisions.

SLO Closeout: Administration of Assessments and Collection of Results Questions for Teacher Reflection:  What seem to be the challenges for those students who are not meeting the target?  What additional student data might help explain why certain students did, or did not, meet their growth and achievement targets?  What instructional strategies might increase the likelihood for success?  Did the assessments chosen accurately reflect student learning as it relates to state-, district-, or school-wide goals?

10

SLO Closeout: Administration of Assessments and Collection of Results Questions for Administrator Reflection:  What tools were used to document, report, and/or provide feedback for analyzing student achievement (answer keys, machine scoring template, rubric - generalized or task specific, checklists/lists of criteria, etc.)?  How do the results reflect an overall understanding of the targeted goal?  How closely do student scores reflect your school/district/BOCES goals?  How do you support the professional development needs that arise from SLO development?  What steps has your school/district/BOCES taken to ensure that SLOs are sufficiently rigorous and consistent across the board?

SLO Closeout: Calculating Assessment Outcomes and Translating to HEDI Scores Results Analysis 1. Administer the summative assessments. 2. Gather summative assessment results (score and record). Closeout

Reflection

3. Calculate outcomes and translate to HEDI scores. 4. Organize, review, and reflect on data to inform classroom, school-wide, and district-wide decisions around student academic goals and instructional decisions.

SLO Closeout: Calculating Assessment Outcomes and Translating to HEDI Scores Questions for Reflection:  How clearly was the process for calculating SLO outcomes and arriving at HEDI scores for individual teachers articulated? Was it transparent?  How would you describe the process of checks and balances to ensure data accuracy and integrity?  What steps could your district/BOCES take to improve upon this process in the future to ensure that SLO results are efficiently converted into HEDI ratings? What additional training or learning is needed to ensure the results are calculated and used properly?

22

SLO Closeout: Calculating Assessment Outcomes and Translating to HEDI Scores Questions for Reflection:    

What is contributing to the success or challenges in educators meeting the academic targets set forth in SLOs? How did the evaluation process and professional development supports help educators improve their practice? What professional development will help educators work successfully with students to meet the targets set for next school year? How do the results direct goals set within teacher improvement plans?
