Student Athlete Mentor Program The Xavier University Student Athlete Mentor Program is designed as a partnership between former Xavier athletes and current Xavier seniors who are involved in one of Xavier’s 16 varsity sports programs. Through these relationships, current athletes have an opportunity to interact with individuals who can relate first hand to the demands of being a student athlete and providing real life examples of life after Xavier. Mentors can serve in a wide variety of roles by acting as listeners, observers, problem solvers and advisors on a variety of relevant issues. For most student athletes, life after Xavier requires a transition from being a student athlete to a working professional. Although this can be an uncertain transition for many, the program is designed to help student athletes utilize valuable skills that can help ease them through this process. By utilizing the mentor program, student athletes can learn from others who have made this journey in the past. Mentors can also provide valuable networking opportunities as it relates to individual student athletes interests and career goals. The Mentor Program will also provide former student athletes the opportunity to reconnect with Xavier by “Giving Back” in a way that will directly affect the life of a current student athlete.

Role of the Student Athlete Mentor By serving as a student athlete mentor, former Xavier athletes are able to share personal and professional experiences that can directly impact the life of a current student athlete. Although each mentors style and relationship may differ in regards to time, nature of contact and topics discussed, they all share a common bond in the transition from student athlete to working professional. The Xavier student athlete Mentor program is tailored to fit the life of a busy executive. Although there are no required number of contacts between a mentor and student, we ask that both parties provide the flexibility and availability for this program to make an impact.

Program Goals •

• • • •

Partner former Xavier athletes with all returning Xavier student athletes who are completing their final year at Xavier (Mentors and student athletes will be partnered as closely as possible in terms of sport and career interests). Based on the initial results of this plan, the program will have the ability to expand to include other classes as well. Serve as a source on how valuable student athlete skills can be applied to careers and how to articulate these skills to a potential employer. These skills include leadership, time management, teamwork, perseverance and lessons learned from the experience of victory and defeat. Provide advice on personal growth and development by encouraging the student to know the world outside of Xavier. Provide valuable professional networking opportunities through interaction with mentors and utilizing on campus career and development services. Engage the support of former Xavier athletes in a forum where they can “give back” to the students. This program will help former athletes re connect with the Xavier community and lead to future opportunities with the University.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Supporting Xavier Athletics

August 22, 2006

Dear Xavier University Student-Athlete Mentor, Enclosed please find sections of XAVIER MUSKETEER EXCELLENCE, The Do’s and Don’ts of Supporting Xavier Athletics. Under NCAA rules, Xavier University is responsible for controlling and conducting its athletic program to ensure NCAA violations do not occur. The primary purpose of the attached information is to provide general guidelines as to what actions by an athletic representative or booster towards student-athletes may violate NCAA Rules. This material does not address all NCAA Rules. Rather, it provides guidelines so that a mentor of the Xavier University athletic program knows what actions could jeopardize the eligibility of an individual as well as the integrity of the institution. Violating NCAA Rules can result in serious penalties. I hope you will review the attached so that you know what actions can violate NCAA Rules. Should you have any questions about this material or other NCAA Legislation, please contact my office at 513745-3727. Thank you for your time and for supporting Xavier University through the student-athlete mentoring program. Sincerely,

George Rathman Compliance Coordinator
