We invite students and educators to explore these stories through dynamic exhibitions, programs, and resources. The new Exploring the Field guides (page 6) help students and chaperones explore the Museum's permanent exhibitions in a new ways through focused investigations. This year we are opening captivating temporary exhibitions that will inspire educators and students of all subjects and grade levels. Students will explore recent archaeological discoveries that challenge traditional stereotypes in Vikings and look beyond the manufactured Hollywood images of Vodou to discover a vital spiritual and social force in the daily life of Haiti in Vodou: Sacred Powers of Haiti. Explore biology through the lens of physics in The Machine Inside: Biomechanics, and extend the learning into your classroom with the Biomechanics Educator Toolkit (page 9). Check out other new offerings at our annual Educator Open House on Thursday, October 23.

The Ancient Americas 1 hour

Overview

In this exploration, students will travel through The Ancient Americas exhibition and observe six different types of societies that developed in response to specific environmental conditions. Students will observe and describe the tools, food, and homes unique to each society.

Online Games Reinforce key science concepts through online games designed to extend learning beyond the field trip. The Field Museum has created two environments in Whyville, an educational virtual world designed for 8- to 15-year-old students. BIOlympics allows students to explore animal characteristics that allow them to achieve amazing feats in the BIOlympics training rooms. Then, students use what they learn to pick out the best competitors for BIOlympics arena events. In WhyReef students observe, count, and identify reef species to monitor reef populations just like scientists do, Students can also play the Food Web Game to figure out how these creatures depend on one another. Educator GuidE & WalkinG Map The Field Museum’s Education Department develops educator guides to provide detailed information on field trip planning, alignment with Illinois State Learning Standards, as well as hands-on classroom activity ideas to do before and after your visit to the Museum.

The Biomechanics Educator toolkit is a suite of lessons, design challenges, and multimedia resources to aid you in facilitating learning experiences that challenge students to view biology through the lens of physics. The toolkit is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards and available online at http://biomechanics.fieldmuseum.org/explore/educational-resources/ roadmap free of charge. VIRTUAL VISITS Peer behind-the-scenes with Virtual Visits from The Field™! Take your students on a journey they won’t forget with this interactive digital experience. Explore the path of a specimen from the time it is collected to the time it becomes a part of the Museum’s collection. In these 60-minute live web broadcasts, students have the opportunity to meet Field Museum scientists, ask questions, see scientists prepare specimens, and learn about the latest research at the Museum. All modules are aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and accompanied by pre-and-post activities that support and extend the concepts presented in the live broadcast. Sessions are available for middle school and high school audiences, either for a single classroom or for a grade-wide assembly. All that is required to participate is a projector and a high-speed Internet connection. Pre-registration is required; cost is $125 for up to 35 students or $250 for 36 students or more. Meet scientist Jim Louderman, and learn about biodiversity through the study of beetles. Jim will discuss the importance of biodiversity and how humans’ actions can affect the biodiversity of a local ecosystem. Jim will show students how to identify beetles collected in a carrion trap and how to interpret those findings to assess the quality of the sampled habitat.

Take a virtual journey down to the depths of the sea floor and explore the unique ecosystem of a hydrothermal vent. Join scientist Janet Voight as she discusses the organisms that live near these vents and how they have evolved adaptations to their dark, harsh chemical environment.

Vodou: Sacred Powers of Haiti October 24, 2014 – April 26, 2015 When you hear the word Vodou, what comes to mind? Zombies, evil spells, or dolls stuck with pins? In the upcoming exhibition Vodou: Sacred Powers of Haiti, look beyond these stereotypes and manufactured Hollywood images, and discover a vital spiritual and social force in the daily life of Haiti. This exhibition was co-organized by the Canadian Museum of History and the Foundation for the Preservation, Promotion and Production of Haitian Cultural Works in partnership with the Ethnography Museum of Geneva in Switzerland and the Tropenmuseum of the Netherlands.

Music, art, warfare, politics, and trade come together to create a rich portrait of a fascinating and diverse culture.

Contemporary artist Bunky Echo-Hawk’s live painting events, colorful skateboard decks, and design partnership with Nike all debunk stereotypes about Native Americans today. By merging Native American images with pop culture references, Echo-Hawk uses humor to shed light on current issues facing Native American communities. See what happens when this artist, activist, and traditional Pawnee singer draws inspiration from historic Field Museum collections. This exhibition is included with general admission and does not require a special ticket.

From the National Historical Museum of Sweden comes the dramatic and surprising story of the Vikings. Recent archaeological discoveries of this culture, that flourished more than a thousand years ago in (c) 2013 Swedish History Museum Europe, have cast out common stereotypes. In this exhibition, hundreds of artifacts go beyond the legends of the seafaring people and reveal fascinating insights about Viking life and death. Recent archaeological discoveries have shed new light on Viking culture. The popular view of Vikings as fierce raiders with horned helmets has been replaced by a more complex picture. This exhibition from the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm, Sweden features nearly 500 artifacts, a replica Viking ship, interactives, and videos to immerse learners in the world of the Vikings. Discover Viking home life, beliefs, and burial traditions along with the symbolism of their ships and their amazing craftsmanship.

Playlab Programs

Soil Adventure

The Crown Family PlayLab, an exhibition designed for children ages 2-6, offers endless opportunities for young visitors to express themselves, make their own discoveries, and be a scientist for a day. To visit the PlayLab, all student groups must pre-register for one of the PlayLab programs listed below. Walk-ins are not allowed. PlayLab programs are available Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 10am or 11am, September 29-May 29. Cost is $2.50 per student, unless otherwise noted. Maximum of 35 students per program. Register for PlayLab programs online at fieldmuseum.org/schools/field-trip-programs.

Investigate the materials that make up soil, test their properties, and explore the critters that play an important role in decomposition. This program is available at the Museum or at your school. Programs at the Museum include a guided visit to the Underground Adventure exhibition.

Teens Get Involved @ The Field Teen volunteers help make The Field Museum's galleries come alive! Teens are trained to interact with visitors of all ages, spending half of their day in the Crown Family PlayLab and the other half of their day in the Museum’s exhibitions facilitating hands-on carts full of specimens and artifacts. Eligible candidates must have completed one year of high school and be between the ages of 14 and 19 years old. Teens are required to volunteer one day a week from mid-June through mid-August and complete a minimum of 56 volunteer service hours by the end of the program. Summer Workshops @ The Field Are you ready for the most intense two weeks of your life? The Digital Media Learning summer workshops are crash courses in the newest scientific research and media technology. Students will be immersed in an intensive short workshop where they work directly with scientists and educators to learn about the science happening at The Field. Teens work in small groups to create digital media projects that will help teach the public about the discoveries happening at The Field. Applications open January 16th and must be received by March 13, 2015. Workshops are two weeks in length; daily attendence is required.
