Student Active Participation | Guidelines Students’ active participation is always an enriching experience as it is a great opportunity to share exciting knowledge and to get into contact with various research fields. In order to guarantee that this week will be filled with memorable moments of scientific and cultural exchange, we have defined some general considerations, specific requirements (given the different types of presentations) and some suggestions to help you prepare your individual presentation.

General Considerations 1 | Topic choices and audience If you are interested in submitting your contribution to the Scientific Programme, there are a few things to keep in mind. You probably already have an overall idea of what you want to share with us. You may be thinking of a particular research or theme you are currently working on at your academic institution with your supervisor. Nevertheless, we would like to bring your attention to the following tips: 1. Motivation and Uniqueness - You should be intrinsically motivated to present the topic you are thinking about submitting. The more you are genuinely into a particular theme the best, as the odds of getting more people interested increase. We also encourage sharing original subjects and innovative findings. 2. Feel the audience – You will be sharing your knowledge with students that come from diverse academic backgrounds. That means that they might not be familiarized with your specific field of research. It is important to plan ahead to make sure that your message is accessible to those who are attending your presentation. 3. Keep emotions in mind – The congress theme is Decoding emotions: From science to practice. Therefore, it is important that your presentation falls within the topic without being too specific or 1 of 6

narrow. If you are thinking of sharing research that is too distant from the mainstream fields, please take the time to acquaint the audience with the particular scientific construct.

2 | Quality Issues Certainly, high quality standards are used to assess submissions as in any other EFPSA Congress. Nevertheless, being creative and expressing yourself in novel ways is encouraged. It is also very important that the referees speak eligible English so that the audience is able to fully understand the content. Presentations should also be of respectable quality and well prepared. For more information concerning the design of papers, posters and workshops please refer to the sections below.

Student Paper Presentation 15 minutes ( maximum duration + 5 tolerance); Resources: laptops, projectors, flipcharts, projectors, laser pointer; Support material: handouts (Din A4 or A5); Passion for you work and enthusiasm!

3 | Preparing your Student Paper Presentation 1. Dynamics of the presentation - It is preferable to instigate interest on your fellow participants than to present every little detail to its fullest. Therefore, we ask you to find the balance between the scientific content and engaging material, so that your work catches everyone’s attention and interest. 2. Mutual learning – We are all learners, so there’s no problem in not knowing how to answer a question. Yet, in order to enrich the discussions, we encourage you to deepen your knowledge in

the field of your research and also be willing to take in consideration the opinions and suggestions of the participants. 3. Multimedia Logistics - To help you with your presentation you might resort to several multimedia tools. If you decide to go with a PowerPoint document, we advise you to choose an adequate font type and size. Also, pay attention to the colours you choose and the contrast between them. Please do not exceed a maximum of 20 slides. 4. Ways to keep everyone on track - You can make a handout in an A4 or A5 format paper. There you should include a resume of your work and elements that you find relevant. Also, add some contact details (address, institution, etc) so other participants can contact you for further questions.

4 | Conducting your Student Paper Presentation ü The student’s paper presentations will happen alongside the invited speakers, on a room designated beforehand. ü Please make sure that you arrive to your room a couple of minutes before your presentation to check if all the materials are in order, thus avoiding any mishap and promoting the normal flow of the congress, in terms of its schedule. ü Have your presentation/materials in more than one device/platform (Pen drives, e-mail, cloud services, etc.). ü Try not to exceed those 15 minutes to allow a period of Q&A at the end of your presentation – The engaging debates and opportunities to exchange of knowledge are one of the most interesting parts of every EFPSA Congress.

Student Workshops 60 or 90 minutes ( for more please send us an email to [email protected]); Resources: laptops, projectors, flipcharts, projectors, laser pointer, others (contact us); Support material: handouts (Din A4 or A5), others (contact us);

Joy and happiness for what you’re about to share!

5 | Preparing your Student Workshop We expect that your workshop proposal will reflect an educational or instructional class dedicated to teach specific skills or exploring a particular topic related with the theme of the congress. There are a number of important issues to be considered in order to plan and implement a workshop.

ü Create an outline for your workshop presentation. Your outline must integrate an introduction, an interactive main part and a conclusion. ü Have a structure – Make a workshop timetable with your estimates about how much time you will spend in introduction, presentation, demonstrations, discussions, etc.; ü Opt to dedicate the initial part of your workshop on explaining/demonstrating the main skills or information to be tackled. ü Prepare handouts for participants (optional) - should be prepared in A4 or A5 paper format. It must include a resume of your workshop's content and some contact details (email address, university, etc.). ü Decide how you will wrap up the workshop! You can include a Q&A part or use a feedback form, it is up to you!

6 | Conducting your Student Workshop ü Adapt the workshop to your audience! Your listeners will be attentive and curious students, willing to interact and discuss their own ideas. Do not forget this when you design your workshop! Your fellow participants will appreciate it! 4 of 6

ü Avoid “mini-conferences”. ü Be dynamic! We strongly encourage you to consider alternative methods of education to implement your workshop. You might want to consider the use of brainstorming exercises, minitutorials around key ideas, debates, demonstration sessions, etc. Here is a list of 100 possible activities for a workshop: http://www.icaso.org/vaccines_toolkit/subpages/files/English/energiser_guide_eng.pdf ü Training! Before the workshop try to present your information to classmates, friends or relatives. Ask them for feedback on the effectiveness and explicitness of your presentation.

Student Posters 5 minutes (you’ll have this time to present your poster to everyone); Format: Dim A0; Support material: handouts (Din A4) in reasonable quantity;

Love for sharing knowledge with others!

7 | Preparing your Student Poster ü Design – The poster must be attractive! Strive to organize the information and use clear and simple terms in order to facilitate the reading and comprehension. ü Fonts – Be mindful of the size of the letters, they should be large enough in order to be read at a distance. ü Illustrations – You can use simple graphs and tables to present your results. ü Handouts (optional) – This A4 page contains a resume of your poster. You can add some information (e.g. email address, university, etc.). Make several copies of handout and pin it next to your poster.

8 | Presenting your Student Poster ü Posters will be exposed during the congress in a place designated by the Org.com. ü You’ll have the opportunity to do a short presentation (5 minutes) of your poster and after this, we’ll open a brand new type of Q&A period. During this, you’ll have the opportunity to explain your work and answer questions from other participants.

Proposals should be submitted by filling out the application form: http://goo.gl/forms/UFpKi1UQjv If your paper presentation/poster/workshop is accepted, we will let you know until the 28th of February 2016. For further inquiries, please contact: [email protected]
