in the district, meaning that separating the high achievers from the low achievers is what has been creating the district’s immense achievement gaps. “All I know is that GATE students are going to continue to be GATE students,” he said. “I haven’t heard of any drastic changes that are going to affect that. All we’re looking at is making sure that all of the kids have equal opportunities and are equally challenged.” Velasquez said the movement in education does away with grouping students by perceived ability level and toward a mixed learning environment, where students with different maturity and development levels are in the same classroom. Parents are listening, but their expectations of their gifted students do not fit in with their children being in the same classrooms with “regular” students. Mixed classrooms is not what parents of gifted students want to hear, especially if they have a conventional conception of intelligence. “I don’t want my child in a classroom with kids who are two grades behind,” said Corina Flores, the parent of a third-grade GATE student. “To me, that’s lowering the standards for my child, and it’s telling her that she’s done all of this hard work for nothing. Why do they have to change what our kids are being offered, when the problem isn’t there? “The district needs to change what all of the other kids are being offered. If they’re not being challenged enough in the regular classrooms, then change that. Don’t make my child pay for it.” Flores said she has a niece in the Compton Unified School District who is in the same grade as her daughter and said that her daughter is already learning division, as opposed to her niece still being taught addition. “Being in the GATE Program isn’t just a title for some of us. Some of us parents really push our kids to succeed,” Flores added. “The homework is harder than it is for kids in regular classes, and there’s a lot of projects that the teachers require for the kids to do. It’s a lot of hard work for a third grader, but it’s worth it. “If the district wants to close the achievement gap, then they need to zero in on the regular classes … that’s where they’ll find the problems. Look at the curriculum, look at the teachers, and look at the homework kids are getting.” Flores said she has not been contacted by the school district about any possible changes that it’s thinking about making to the program, but said she has heard people talking about it. “I’ve heard that parents have taken their kids out of the district because their kids aren’t being challenged enough in the regular classrooms, so imagine now, if they cut the GATE Program, I may have to do that too,” she said. Another option the district is looking at is offering students the John Hopkins Program in the summer. Paul Gothold, the district’s chief academic officer, said that he recently held an inaugural GATE parent meeting to tell them about the Johns Hopkins Program. About 200 parents showed up, he

Strategic planning sessions gives district clearer picture BY MARISELA SANTANA STAFF WRITER

LYNWOOD — Creating a strategic plan for the Lynwood Unified School District will be a long, lengthy and — at times — complicated process, said school Superintendent Ed Velasquez, but it’s going to be so worth the wait. Superintendent for nearly a year now, Velasquez has had his plate full with dealing with the district’s financial mess, facility issues, security issues and chaos with the district’s instructional program alignment. But now that most of the dust has settled, Velasquez and his cabinet have a clearer view of where they want to take the district. The ideas though can’t be theirs alone, said Velasquez, adding that it’s going to take a village to move the district forward. The superintendent’s strategic planning workshops included more than 30 stakeholders from across the district at the Embassy Suites in Downey last week for three days to form goals, objectives and a vision and mission statement for the district. Sources say that it has been at least 10 years since school officials have even touched the subject of creating a strategic plan. The planning workshops

were led by the consulting firm Cambridge Strategic Services. But, while the concept of formalizing a strategic plan for the school district for the next five years appealed to many, not all of the stakeholders in the community were happy about how they were being represented on the committee. Velasquez, and Paul Gothold, the district’s chief academic officer, were in attendance all three days, along with school board member Rachel Chavez. The rest of the attendees represented parents, teachers, the district’s unions, and students. Some of the attendees included Carlos Zaragoza, Yvette Harps, Flavio Gallarzo, Tony Hua, Dalilah Outley, Jackie Espinoza, Mary Ransom, Jean Jones, Kevin Mitchel, Peter Wong, Griselda Rodriguez and Juna Givhan. The workshops were led by Howard Feddema of Cambridge Strategic Services. Feddema’s strategy was to split the sessions into three days of work and input. On the first day, the group identified the school district’s strengths. Though a list of 31 strengths were identified at the end of the day, Feddema reminded the group that just because the strengths were on the list, that it

did not mean that everyone on the committee agreed with it. Among the strengths, the committee listed: Caring teachers in the district, administrators committed to making positive change, improved transparency and communication, small community, increased commitment to student achievement, increased parent involvement, credit recovery, perseverance, commitment to improving facilities, better working conditions between the district and its unions and management, a strong alumni association, an A-G curriculum for all, the support of the board of education, a sense of hope, extracurricular programs, innovative academic programs, and how the district has great students with great potential to learn. The first day revealed that all of the stakeholders want what is best for the kids, Velasquez said. On the second day the committee was asked to identify the school district’s weaknesses. Among the district’s weaknesses, the committee listed: the state’s dwindling budget, inconsistent parent involvement at all schools, hiring practices, a legacy of divisiveness, low expectations for student learning by some staff members, nutritional equity across the district during lunchtime, the lack of health education, inconsistent grading policy, lack of student and staff recognition, some staff resistant to change, legacy of distrust, unequal access to A-G requirements, how politics sometimes get in the way of effective decisions, teacher absences, the fact that LUSD is a program improvement district, insufficient collaboration, students not taking tests seriously, safety and security issues, culture of intimidation, See PLANNING on page A2

LYNWOOD — The Gifted and Talented Education Program that has been offered to Lynwood Unified School District elementary school students for decades will “not be eliminated,” district officials said this week hoping to calm parents’ fears that GATE classes would cease to exist in the 2011-12 school year. “That’s mere speculation,” said school Superintendent Ed Velasquez in an interview Wednesday afternoon. “We are not eliminating GATE classes. Right now we are re-evaluating the GATE Program. No one has said that the program is going to be eliminated. I don’t know why parents are upset. Nothing has been set in stone. We’re still having conversations about the program … for example seeing how to enrich and enhance the program, how it has been working if it has been working, seeing who has been teaching the program. We are still doing our homework and doing research … so we’re not touching anything yet, we’re just having conversations.” Velasquez said he will make sure the district does not take any action regarding the GATE Program without involving parents in the process. If anything, he said, at the end of the conversations, the program will be better than it is now. “But I do have to say that just because it’s what the district has offered in the past, it doesn’t mean that it was the best for all students,” he said. “And that’s what we’re looking at. We are looking at improving the program across the school district … to make sure that all students have equal access to the rigor GATE classes afford GATE students.” School board member Alfonso Morales is an alumni of LUSD’s GATE Program and wouldn’t allow the GATE Program to be eliminated that easily. “Parents are misconstruing the facts,” he said. “The district right now is analyzing the program, and basically legalizing what we’re doing in terms of offering students the GATE Program.” Just as parents were in an uproar over Firebaugh High School’s International Baccalaureate Program a few years back saying that the program was hand-picking the best students in the district for its own benefit, the same can be said about the district’s current GATE Program, Morales said. “GATE basically puts all of the high achievers together and isolates them,” Morales said, adding that it isn’t something you think about when you are a student in the GATE Program. “In a way, it’s discriminatory,” he said. “You’re taking all of the high achievers and putting them in certain classes and offering them a much more rigorous curriculum. But what is happening to all of the other students? They’re isolated in the other direction, and that’s what needs to change, because all our kids should be challenged, not just the GATE students.” The talks over the district’s GATE Program are new, Morales said, and though he hasn’t heard of parents being upset over the program allegedly being cut, he has been briefed by the administration that the tracking of students will no longer be systematic

said. The program would essentially be a summer program where students, via fellowship or scholarship money, would attend Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth for two weeks. The CTY’s talent search program identifies, assesses and recognizes students with exceptional mathematical and/or verbal reasoning abilities, and is open for students from the second to eighth grades. The process behind the Johns Hopkins isn’t an easy one, but it comes with a wealth of benefits, said Velasquez. “It’s just an option we’re talking about,” he said, for GATE students — “depending on what our research and data tell us our students need to continue succeeding.” The program’s implementation in Montebello, Velasquez added, was extremely well-received by parents. The response from parents at the inaugural meeting, Gothold said, was unbelievable. It’s still just an option, Gothold said, but it’s part of this new administration’s plan to do what is being asked of “us by the school board, to do what’s best for all students.” The GATE Program is being reevaluated, but no one has said that it’s going to be cut, he said. “We’re evaluating the system we have in place,” he said. “We’re not disbanding the GATE Program, we’re trying to figure out what’s best for everyone, and part of that is bringing continuity to the district.” A recent strategic planning session is also part of aligning the district curriculum wise, Gothold said, along with recent professional development workshops. Performance targets are also being set at the same level across the district. The fact is there have been disparities in achievement from school to school over the years, along with expectations for every school being different, when the expectations should have been the same for all of the schools and all of the students, Gothold said. The focus in the talks about changes in the GATE Program, or in bringing back the A-G elective requirements, or curriculumalignment wise, and even in making sure there is consistency in classroom teachings, it all has to do with bringing consistency to the district, Velasquez said. In aligning every content area, Gothold added, “We will be able to more effectively track our students’ achievements … and make sure that every kid is reaching our benchmarks. … And if there are deficiencies, they can be caught and addressed right then and there.” Better differentiated instruction is also part of the district’s strategies to close the existing achievement gaps. “In order for us to be a great district, we need to be able to address the needs of each and every student the next day, before it’s too late,” Gothold said. “Consistency will enrich and enhance … every program this district offers our students.” Yvette Perez, the parent of a second grade GATE student, said she doesn’t want her son sitting in a classroom where his teacher See GATE on page A2

Independent committee to review finances at Compton college Nine-member panel will help oversee fiscal practices in troubled Compton Community College District. BY LEILONI DE GRUY STAFF WRITER

COMPTON — If Compton Community College District is to prepare itself for future accreditation, its fiscal practices and policies must be intact, according to college officials. On April 14, a nine-member audit review committee was established by CCCD Special Trustee Genethia Hudley-Hayes as a means to get the district back to fiscal solvency. “The 2009 external audit for the district included 22 material findings; and last year there were 20 material findings,” HudleyHayes said. “This committee, along with the consulting firm of Vasquez and Company, will assist us in getting our financial house in order.” After looking at the previous audits for the first time, when he was hired to fill the position in December, CCCD’s Chief Business Officer and commit-

tee member Danny Villanueva thought, “Oh my God.” And that was just his first day of work. The most recent audit “had material weaknesses, which means you are really in trouble and other stuff that could lead to trouble,” he added. “When you look at the audit from the previous year, you see this recurring theme where things are falling through the gaps and were not attended to appropriately. We didn’t get here because of one bad budget, we got here because of several bad budgets. This committee is not here because we had one bad audit, the committee is here because we had perpetual [bad] audits.” According to a PowerPoint presentation given by Vasquez and Company, prior audit findings discovered that there were more than $3.3 million of adjustments to the district’s accounting records, accounting systems were not in agreement with each other and high personnel turnover left unqualified staff to remedy the deficiencies. Additionally, there was delinquent filing of the annual report, fixed asset accounting reports were inaccurate, work was understated by $1.2 million, disposals were not recorded, depreciation was not well calculated, some monies were not

recorded and expenditures of federal awards were incomplete and inaccurate. There was also an incurrence of $328,000 for the Student Supportive Services Program despite it no longer being funded by the federal government, work began on construction prior to purchase order approvals or signed contracts and there were no vendor invoices. The Chancellor’s office, reads the company’s findings, was not advised of 2003’s refinancing of bonds, which resulted in the state’s continued withdrawal of debt service payments from the district’s general revenues to repay the obligation. This caused $1 million of funds to be held by the special trustee when they should have been used to pay the bonds. Also, the Payroll Clearing Fund was not reconciled and was complicated by untimely payment of deductions withheld from employee paychecks. Failure to formally close out outstanding loans within the discontinued Perkins Loan Program or resolve a cash clearing account and a Workers’ Compensation Self-Insurance bank account added to financial miscalculations. Accounting records for the Associate Student Government

also had major unexplained adjustments. Furthermore, “the district’s original calculation of the salaries of classroom instructors and 50 percent law identified a shortfall of $1.4 million, subsequently revised to $326,000,” said the presentation. “The changes resulting in the revised calculation were not recorded in the general ledger, do not consider the impact of audit adjustments and their accuracy has not been reviewed by the independent auditors. This district is not in compliance with the requirements of the 50 percent law calculation by an amount between $329,000 and $1.4 million.” Though an El Camino Community College District internal auditor raised many of these concerns, there was no risk assessment plan or follow up on reviews. “That is not good for business,” Villanueva said. “Sometimes when you are too customer service orientated, you lack in other areas. I think that is the challenge we have had. We need a culture that permeates excellence, appropriate practices and policies for accounting and for the business office, all the way around. … We need to be a lean, mean financial machine. This is going to help

us refocus. It is going to tell us the raw truth necessary to move forward.” For Charles Davis, committee member and CCCD Board of Trustees president, a huge upset to the district’s financial standing was personnel turnover. According to district officials, there have been up to seven different CBO’s in a matter of four years, which has resulted in mass confusion. “I think this is a good move. I have been on the board for just over a year and these audit exceptions are from then,” he said. “We have to work at the things that can be corrected. Some things won’t be that easy. One of our problems, and some of the other members recognized it too, is that we’ve had more than five CBO’s and that’s when you lose your stability at the top. It makes it very difficult because every new person that comes in has a different perception on how things should be done. We hope that the things found in the audit can be corrected once we have them documented in detail … and Vasquez and Company provides us with the necessary recommendations and processes.” The committee, comprised of non-paid volunteers, will be responsible for reviewing the

activities and efficiency of independent auditors and analyzing the policies and procedures that impact the district’s finances and operations. Vasquez and Company will hone in on four key areas: Identifying fiscal issues and developing a work plan and timeline to address them; providing staff training necessary to implement the practices and policies; recommending needed technology and enhancements; and providing best practices relative to economies and productivity within the financing department. According to a district source, an audit report should be available by June 30. The expectation is to have measurable outcomes and updates every 60 to 120 days. Other members of the committee include: Joseph Zeronian, adjunct professor at USC; Cheryl Branch, executive director of Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches; Clifford Graves, interim city manager for the city of Carson; JoAnn Hidgon, El Camino College vice president of administrative services; Willie Norfleet, city manager of the city of Compton; Richard Powers, executive director of Gateway Cities Council of Governments; and Robert Torrez, assistant city manager for the city of Lynwood.

Supervisors get first look at 2011-12 spending plan From City News Service

The county Board of Supervisors offered more insights Tuesday into where services might be reduced as federal and state budget cuts take effect. The board began its review of a $23.3 billion budget proposed by county Chief Executive Officer William Fujioka and released Monday. Despite a $220.9 million budget deficit heading into the coming fiscal year, Fujioka said the county will be able to close the gap without resorting to layoffs or requiring workers to take unpaid furlough days. However, his draft budget does not factor in state and federal budget cuts currently on the table. Fujioka said the situations in Sacramento and Washington are in too much flux to include those proposals. So more cuts, and even layoffs, could be coming. “The other shoe hasn’t dropped yet,” Supervisor Mike Antonovich said. More than 20 percent of the county’s total budget is funded by the state and the federal government funds roughly the same percentage.

The county is anticipating a $366 million hit from the state budget alone, which will primarily affect health and social service programs. It is also examining the impacts of a potential elimination or reduction of federal block grants for Medicare and MediCal patients. Fujioka said the result would be “horrific” and waiting lines at crowded county emergency rooms would get even longer. The county’s budget goes roughly a quarter each to health (including mental health), public protection (including sheriff’s deputies, probation services and the district attorney’s office) and public assistance (including general welfare and other social services, including child welfare), with the balance being spent on a host of other items. Supervisor Don Knabe focused Tuesday on $15 million in cuts to the Sheriff’s Department, saying it represented the “lion’s share” of operating cuts, which total $35.7 million and that he’d like to see some sources of funding restored. The Sheriff’s Department adjustment represents a 1.3 percent reduction.

Antonovich seemed to share Knabe’s concerns about protecting the Sheriff’s Department. He worried that realignment at the state level would ultimately impact sheriff’s patrols in unincorporated areas. The department is managing “a balancing act between jail beds and patrol,” Antonovich said to Victor Rampulla, who heads the sheriff’s administrative services division. Rampulla said the department has closed its North County Correctional Facility and reduced beds in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in order to save money, but patrols might suffer in the face of further cuts. Knabe signaled a willingness to restrict county welfare funds. The general relief caseload grew from $148 million in 2007-08 to an estimated $257 million in 2010-11 and Knabe said it was approaching “the cost to fund one of our county hospitals.” That cost, which covers payments of $221 per month to indigent residents, is borne solely by the county. Staffers have been working to get federal disability payments for those on county welfare rolls who are eligible.

About 15,000 have been transitioned off welfare and either into jobs or onto disability, according to Knabe. But he thought more could be done. Knabe asked Fujioka and social services personnel to report back on a plan to reduce costs, including setting time limits for eligibility for those who are not pursuing employment and offering in-kind housing rather than cash to those in need. Knabe also asked that best practices of other municipalities be considered — including sanctions for non-compliance and requirements for documenting residency. Probation chief Donald Blevins, whose department is already facing a structural deficit of $35 million, has “just started working on a contingency plan” to handle juvenile offenders to be transferred back to the county. The state is offering the county $115,000 per offender to house them, though the state’s cost is $200,000 per person, according to the chief. “I really don’t have any facilities that were designed to be long-term facilities,” Blevins said, adding that some juveniles

charged with serious offenses were in detention for up to six years with the state. Blevins said the state planned to keep at least one of its facilities open and the county could contract back with the state to pay for offenders housed there, a complicated scenario that Antonovich dismissed as “another flawed plan” offered by the state. Fujioka has been working with county department to save dollars wherever possible by limiting supplies, deferring equipment purchases and creating organizational efficiencies. Fujioka estimated that those efforts would yield about $163 million in operating savings by June. However, those cost savings came under scrutiny Tuesday. Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky suggested that a plan to consolidate the Department of Consumer Affairs with the Department of Community and Senior Services might result in lost revenues currently generated by the independent consumer affairs group and asked Fujioka to reconsider. Yaroslavsky also asked Fujioka to take a harder look at a Department of Children and Family Services request for 26

will have to stop teaching the class to help students who are behind catch up. “That’s not going to help my son,” she said. “I’ve heard that they want to cut the GATE classes, and offer GATE students an after-school class. It’s a good idea, but have they thought about the parents, and asking us if we want our kids to be in school after 3 p.m., no, they haven’t asked us for our opinion.” Ramon Siordia, the father of a fifth-grade GATE student and a third-grade student who is not in the GATE program, said he would like for both of his daughters to be challenged the same

way in the classroom. “Their homework has never been the same,” he said. “It’s always been different. My older daughter has always had a lot of homework, and we’ve always had to put together all of these special projects, and even her spelling words have been more challenging. My younger daughter’s spelling words are still easier, and there hasn’t been as many projects. So in a way, I like that the district is looking at ways to improve how it’s teaching kids who aren’t in GATE.” It’s wrong for parents and for the district to think that only the GATE and honors kids are special, he said.

“All of our kids are special, and they are all capable,” Siordia said. “There’s teachers in this district who think that all of the resources should only go to GATE classes. So where does that leave the rest of the children? It’s not right for them to think this way. “There should be rigor in all of the classrooms, not just in the GATE classrooms. The performance of the students might vary, but at least they will all have been given the opportunity to succeed, and not just a selected few because they scored high on a test. That’s an elitist mentality. The more students are given the opportunity, the better.”

For residents interested in making their own attempt at balancing the budget and choosing where to make cuts, a “You Draft the Budget” tool is available on Knabe's website, knabe.com. Knabe also released a related two-minute YouTube video. “We wanted to give people a chance to ‘follow the money’ and learn more about all the programs the county provides,” Knabe said. Public hearings on the budget will begin May 11 and final deliberations by the board are scheduled to begin June 20.

adult issues taking a priority over student learning, large class sizes, parents loss of confidence in the quality of education in the district and the high turnover in administration. Feddema noticed that it seemed that the group could more easily come up with more weaknesses than it did strengths the day before, but reminded them that even in society it is always easier to focus on the negative than the positive. Velasquez also reminded the group that much of what the members of the committee were listing as weaknesses were in the process of being rectified. From creating a uniform policy at all of the schools for parent involvement to bringing back

the A-G electives, “there’s been activity in the last few months to address some of these concerns.” Later, Velasquez said there was more he wanted to say about the committee’s lists but said it would have intervened too much with Feddema’s schedule for the workshops. Feddema’s role as the facilitator was exemplary. While it was speculated that many on the committee were handpicked by the superintendent and his cabinet and would not be able to speak freely and openly about the district’s problems and/or accomplishments, Feddema made sure everyone was comfortable enough to be honest and open about any concerns they may have with the district. Along with giving all of the

members input on their concerns or suggestions, Feddema also helped the committee identify the roots of the district’s positives and negatives. Mercedes Ramirez, who was there representing parents, said she couldn’t believe the district was actually conducting the workshops. “We have been waiting for something like this to happen for a long, long time,” she said. “This district has had no consistency, almost like in a state of chaos for such a long time, that to be here, to be in a room with all of these people, to form a plan for our children, it’s a breath of fresh air. I can’t believe I’m here. I can’t believe the district is doing this. Finally someone is trying to put a stop to the chaos.”

College gets grant to set up new curriculum Wave Staff Report

NORWALK — Cerritos College has received a $750,000 grant from Next Generation Learning Challenges to support a multi-institutional, open educational resource project, according to Aya Abelon, the college’s media relations coordinator. NGLC is a new initiative focused on identifying and scaling technology-enabled approaches to improve college readiness for low-income young adults by addressing a continuum of interrelated issues spanning secondary and post-secondary education from grades six through college, Abelon said.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation helped design and provided funding for the initiative. Cerritos College’s Open General Education Curriculum at Multi-Institutional Scale project is designed to create, assess and scale a comprehensive, first-year, general education curriculum that uses existing technologies. Nine high-enrollment general education courses in biology, chemistry, math, reading, English, business and psychology areas will be developed, incorporating open education resource projects. “Our goal is to create a shared

institutional open-learning system that increases the number of students who complete degrees while reducing the cost of academic content across institutions that share common student challenges,” said M.L. Bettino, dean of academic affairs at Cerritos College, who will manage the project. Cerritos College was selected from a field of more than 600 pre-

DEFECTIVE HIP IMPLANTS Don’t rely on the company who gave you a potentially defective hip implant to advise you on your legal rights!

DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, has issued a worldwide recall of it’s ASRTM Acetabular System for Total Hip Replacement, after determining that these hip implants may fail at an alarming rate. The “metal-on-metal” composition of these implants can release particles into the patient, potentially causing serious and painful reactions — sometimes requiring complete revision surgery. Reportedly, Johnson & Johnson has been seeking medical releases from recipients so that their claims adjustors can speak with you directly and possibly take down statements without your having counsel present – an unwise action for any recipient to do. Having a defective hip implant in your body clearly demands having your own lawyer. You

must be very cautious with dealing with the manufacturer or its representative without proper legal representation. If you have a DePuy ASR TM product, please call us immediately, as there are time limits for filing a claim. You might already have problems with the implant about which you are unaware, so please contact us — and certainly do not forfeit your legal rights without talking to us.

HONORS The Compton Community College District will host the first Tartar Athletics Hall of Fame event in the El Camino College Compton Center gym. There will be a VIP reception at 11 a.m., followed by the induction ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday. The school is located at 1111 E. Artesia Blvd., Compton. “I have never seen such a lineup of talent and history being honored by a single athletic program in this state,” ECC Compton Center athletic director Albert “Lefty” Olguin,” said. Olympic high jump gold medalists Cornelius Johnson (1936) and Charlie Dumas (1956), NFL Hall of Fame running back Hugh McElhenny (star of the 1948 110 Tartars) and the 1970 state championship basketball team will be among those honored. BASKETBALL Eric Cooper, who guided La Verne Lutheran High School to its second consecutive state championship, has been named Cal-Hi Sports state boys basketball coach of the year. Cooper, who grew up in Compton and Lynwood before attending Wilmington’s Banning High School, was behind Lutheran winning the State Division III crown a year after taking the Division V title. The Trojans were 27-5 and ranked 11th in the state regardless of division. “Wow, it’s an honor and a privilege to be recognized for something you do for the kids,” Cooper told Cal-Hi Sports. ADMINISTRATION Current assistant commissioner Rob Wigod has been named the ninth commissioner of athletics of the CIF Southern Section. Wigod, 52, replaces retiring commissioner Jim Staunton. “I am thrilled to be selected as the next commissioner of athletics,” Wigod said in a statement. “I want to thank commissioner Jim Staunton, who has not only been an outstanding commissioner for our section, but an even better mentor and friend.” VOLLEYBALL El Rancho High School middle blocker Jessica King has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball at Newberry College in South Carolina. King, an All-Del Rio League choice, averaged 5.4 kills and 1.4 blocks per game for the Dons this season. She is also a 4.0 student. Newberry is an NCAA Division II school that plays in the South Atlantic League. BASEBALL UCLA junior right-hander Trevor Bauer captured both the Pac-10 pitcher of the week and Louisville Slugger national player of the week honors. He also earned both awards last week. Bauer struck out 13 while tossing a four-hit, 4-0 shutout against Arizona Saturday. TRACK Cal State L.A.’s Josh Como, who tied his own school record while winning the elite triple jump at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays Saturday, has been named California Collegiate Athletic Association men’s track and field athlete of the week. Como, a senior, posted a mark of 54-8 to win the event by more than a foot over a field of top unattached and NCAA Division I competitors. POLLS Downey Calvary Chapel High School has moved into the No. 1 spot in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 6 softball poll. The Grizzlies are 15-4 overall and 2-0 in the Alpha League. Firebaugh High School players show off the rings they received for winning the CIF Southern Section 5A girls volleyball championship.

First CIF championship for Firebaugh has nice ring to it BY MARISELA SANTANA STAFF WRITER

Fourteen female students officially put Lynwood’s Firebaugh High School on the map when they received rings for winning the first CIF Southern Section championship in the history of a school that opened in 2005. The ring ceremony, which also included hanging the banner for winning the Division 5A volleyball title wasn’t highly attended, but for the girls, who were being cheered on by the school cheerleaders, their friends and families were all that mattered. These girls aren’t just teammates or friends, “they’re their own family,” assistant principal Larry Reed said at the April 14 ceremony. “They’re No. 1 because they are a great group of girls, they’re a close-knit family, they stick together and they pull each other through tough moments, adding that while most girls are catty, this group of girls was not. “I’ve taken long bus road trips with these girls and I’ve seen first hand how they work good together, they laugh together, they smile together and they cry together. That’s one of the biggest reasons why they are CIF champions.” The Falcons, in just their third year of fielding a girls volleyball team, made their first playoff appearance in November. They went on to claim the 5A title with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-23 decision over San Gabriel Valley Academy at Cypress College. That capped a season that saw coach Javier Gonzalez’ team go 20-0, winning the Harbor League title and dropping only five games all season. In the final game, Firebaugh was led by Jocelyn Lazaro, Jessica Peralta and Laura Bogarin, who combined for 23 kills. Lazaro’s nine kills led the way. Lazaro was selected 5A Player of the Year and Gonzalez Coach of the Year. In the playoffs, the Falcons took out the No. 1, 4 and 3 seeds, ultimately taking out what the team called “a strong team from San Gabriel Valley Academy.” “Going in we ranked No. 5,” Gonzalez said about the team in an interview with The Wave back December after the team was recognized by the Lynwood Unified School District’s board of education. “No one expected us to win, but as it turned out, we ended up winning.” The big win, the first in Firebaugh history, is proof, said Gonzalez, that “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” “That’s all we’ve been hearing about all season,” Gonzalez said.

Jocelyn Lazaro receives a handshake from principal George Guerrero at the championship ring ceremony. “A lot of teams have tall players, and a lot of ours are short, so we’ve been getting a lot of ‘you guys are short, you guys are short.’ We got a lot of that, but that is proof that these girls just don’t give up that easily. They are resilient, and very goal-oriented, and they showed all of us that when they have a goal, they are not going to stop until they reach that goal.” What does it mean for these girls to be Firebaugh’s first CIF champions? “I think it’s very special, not just for our school site, but for these girls,” Reed said. “And it’s even more special to me, because I worked at the middle school with seven of these girls and we all came to Firebaugh together. So me knowing that none of these girls were athletes and then to come here and to win a Division 5 championship, it’s an honor to have seen them come this far.” This win, Reed added, will open a lot of doors for the girls, and not just in volleyball. “All of the girls have a 3.0 GPA or above, so this (volleyball) is just an extracurricular activity these girls can list on their resumes.” This win, he continued, won’t just open up college doors, but open job opportunities in the future, too. Because of funding issues, and Firebaugh having little to no sports budget, the volleyball team had to do a lot of fundraising, including selling candy to pay for their uniforms, as well as transportation to different games throughout the season. To be No. 1, it takes commitment, Reed continued. “We are truly appreciative of

this group of girls,” he said, adding that it took a lot of parental commitment, too. “Parent commitment also played a huge role in this win. Someone has to be responsible for transporting these girls back and forth, and making sure the girls make it to practice and then back home in time to do their homework. So parents’ roles are very, very important, especially if they are at home quietly motivating the girls, too. Whether it’s through verbal communication, through hugs, or just by showing up at the games.” The parents of the girls on this team, Reed said, should be applauded. Reed, principal George Guerrero, and assistant principals, Wendy Perez and Les Mazon, along with Gonzalez and assistant coach Omar Espinoza and athletic director Joseph Azzam also received rings. “There’s been a lot of firsts this year,” Azzam said. “We are very proud of this team. This is the first CIF championship win for the school. This win is a great deal in Firebaugh High School history, it’s the foundation to hopefully many championships to come. It legitimizes our school. It says that we’re here and we are a high school and we have programs that are successful. It’s an interesting feeling because most of the schools in the area have already been established, they have history from the ‘30s and ‘40s. What they experienced back then, we’re experiencing it now with this being our first.” Gonzalez called the win an honor for the girls. “Their receiving the ring, is them reaping what they sowed,” he said. “Now they see what they won, and they’re so proud

of themselves, and I’m proud of them. It’s an honor to be their coach.” The path to the championship win was definitely not an easy one, Gonzalez said, adding that that in itself makes the win more meaningful. “We’ve struggled in the past, we’ve done OK in the past, but now for them to be the first actual team from Firebaugh High School to win a championship, I think it’s an honor for them. Now they can be proud of where they go to school.” The win also demonstrates that Firebaugh High School is no longer just a small, unknown high school anymore, Gonzalez said. “I’m very proud of these girls,” he added. “This win showed that they’re not just good at volleyball, it proved to everyone that they’re good in academics, too.” The team consists of six seniors and eight juniors, who will be returning next year. Gonzalez is looking forward to more titles, he said. As a coach, he’s been around athletics for many years, but for Lynwood High School to be just across town and being national champions (in girls basketball) a few years back, for Firebaugh to have their own girls team excelling in their own sport, “it’s a great thing.” Of course male teams still dominate the sports world, but not at Firebaugh, he said. “It’s great for the girls to get the first championship over the boys at Firebaugh,” he said. “Now they could have something they could show off to the males.” Sports Editor Ron Guild contributed to this story.

Firebaugh High School’s baseball and softball programs are thriving as their seasons approach the halfway point. The Falcons’ baseball team, ranked sixth in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 6 coaches poll, had records of 86 overall and 2-0 in the Harbor League heading into Wednesday’s league showdown with Animo Leadership Charter, the division’s fifth-ranked team. Their next scheduled game is April 25 against Environmental Charter at Lynwood Middle School. Firebaugh has been getting good individual seasons from a number of sources. Senior outfielder/third baseman Erick Garcia is hitting .486 with 17 RBIs, senior catcher/second baseman Daniel Esparza is batting .568 with 12 RBIs and 10 stolen bases and senior pitcher/ infielder Gerardo Velasco is hitting .361 with 10 stolen bases. The leader of the pitching staff has been senior Victor Padilla, who is 2-2 with a save and 2.62 ERA. The softball team, though unranked, is 14-3 overall and 5-0 in the Harbor League. The standouts have been sophomore pitcher/first baseman Ashley Cazares, who is 6-2 with a 3.69 ERA in the circle and is hitting .468 with 15 RBIs, junior first baseman Karen Ramirez, batting .450 with 21 RBIs, and junior catcher Natalia Reynoso, hitting .395 with 29 RBIs. Softball roundup Warren (13-3, 4-0) and Downey (13-2-1, 3-0) return to San Gabriel Valley League softball action with a cross-town showdown at Downey April 26. Downey is ranked third and Warren eighth in the latest CIFSS Division 3 poll. Leading the way for Downey, which is playing in the Santa Maria Righetti Tournament this week, has been senior first baseman Andrea Arellano, who is hitting .540 with 30 RBIs, senior shortstop/outfielder Katie Medina, a Florida signee batting .521 with 23 RBIs and senior outfielder Staci Rodriguez, batting .510 with three home runs and 12 RBIs. Sophomore Ale Guillen (7-0) and senior Brenda Martinez (3-2) have handled the pitching. Warren, a Southern Section runner-up a year ago, is led by senior pitcher Franny Vaaulu, who 9-3 with a 1.71 ERA in the circle and is hitting .391 with five homers and 21 RBIs. Junior Tina Iosefa (.486, three homers, 18 RBIs), freshman Neddie Gutierrez (.429, 14 RBIs) and junior Haley Whitney (.426, 12 RBIs) have also carried big bats for the Bears. In the Suburban League, La Mirada (12-6, 7-1), Norwalk (811, 5-1) and Mayfair (9-7, 4-2) are setting the pace. Norwalk has two games scheduled with Glenn (5-6, 1-4) this week, capped by Thursday’s meeting at Norwalk. Norwalk’s leaders have been senior third baseman/catcher Claudia Torres, hitting .509 with 23 RBIs, and freshman catcher/ first baseman Samantha Lujan, batting .441 with 18 RBIs. Downey Calvary Chapel (17-4, 4-0) is ranked No. 1 in the CIFSS Division 6 poll this week. The Alpha League-leading Grizzlies began this week in impressive fashion by pounding Campbell Hall, 21-0 Monday and Pasadena Marshall, 16-3 Tuesday. The offensive stars for Calvary Chapel have been sophomore shortstop Bridget Castro, hitting .500 with six homers and 28 RBIs, and sophomore pitcher Larisa Petakoff, who is 13-2 with and a 0.52 ERA. They host Paraclete (10-5, 2-0) at 3:15 p.m. Thursday in a league showdown of the top two teams.
