Street Storytelling In this 8 week course, we learn the fundamentals of great photography, focusing on storytelling through the genres of documentary and street photography. We start with a crash course in camera settings and composition, then move on to a week by week analysis of classic picture types in documentary and street photography, as well as looking at the work of masters of each genre. Each lesson involves 3 hours of in-class tuition and then, participants will complete their own photography homework assignments on the streets of Hanoi to present to class. After a special class in editing with Lightroom, the course culminates with participants presenting their own complete 7 picture stories documenting an aspect of life in Hanoi. The course is designed to suit both beginner photographers and serious amateurs, with a free introductory pre-course class on DSLR settings for absolute beginners. © VIETNAM IN FOCUS

Course Outline In the first class we will look broadly at photography, talking about photographers and pictures we admire and why. We will then move on to the idea of telling a story through pictures – how can we do this through one picture, and then a series of pictures? There will also be a crash course on camera settings to make sure we are all shooting out of automode! This week we will look in more detail at the ‘relationship shot’, capturing people in their environment. People skills are key to this type of picture, and we will focus on how to approach subjects, or how to become ‘invisible’. Guest photographer Nikolaj Svennevig will explain how he gets this kind of picture, and also explore the importance of developing your own style. In this class we'll focus on the work of Alex Webb, Vivian Maier and Joseph Koudelka. The portrait is our point of focus in this class, and we will be looking at both ‘natural’ and ‘posed’ portraits. Guest photographer Jon Sanwell will lead the workshop, and we will be referring both to his work and that of Steve McCurry and Diane Arbus. Colm will also be leading a short tutorial on flash photography. © VIETNAM IN FOCUS

Often it’s what you don’t show that tells the real story, and so this week we move on to the detail shot – how can we tell a story in fragments? We will be looking closely at the work of Martin Parr and William Eggleston. The last type of shot we will be looking at is often the first in a published picture story – the context shot. We will examine the work of Walker Evans and Alfred Steiglitz to see how we can introduce the setting of a story photographically. There will also be a tutorial on shooting in black and white. This class we move on to creating a picture story using various types of shot. Nikolaj Svennevig returns to discuss approaches to the photo story, from Life magazine to more contemporary takes on story-telling through pictures. Sebastiao Salgado, Ulrik Pederson and Anders Peterson are our guides, and we will be choosing subjects for our final 7 picture project. Participants will have time for one-to-one consultancy with Colm and Nikolaj on their subject choice and approach. During the previous week, we will have been shooting our picture stories, and should return to class with a huge number of contenders for the final selection. How do we judge which pictures make the grade? To help us with this question, we’ll be examining the contact sheets of master photographers and discussing why they chose or rejected certain shots. Jon Sanwell will also lead a tutorial on Lightroom. Review + Presentation of 7 picture stories. © VIETNAM IN FOCUS
