is an active city with indoor and outdoor summer and winter sports. The city is a stadium in itself and offers tremendous opportunities for excercise, outdoor life, boating and downtown fishing. Excellent public transport provides easy access to nature trails, beaches, the vast archipelago, ski trails, frozen lakes for skating as well as waters for fishing and paddling. The City of Stockholm’s Sports Administration operates, administers and leases out 450 sports facilities, including Stockholm Olympic Stadium, artificial grass pitches and gyms. The Sports Administration provides public health services for all Stockholmers at its 14 swimming centres. Additionally, it seeks to enhance gender equality and increased accessibility for people with disabilities. Another objective is to encourage sport clubs to assume greater operational responsibility for City-owned sports facilities. Stockholm is a world class sport city with thriving variety of sports for everyone. The Sports Administration plays a vital role in fulfilling this commitment.

STOCKHOLM STADIUM WAS BUILT for the Summer Olympic Games in 1912 and has witnessed more athletics world records than any other sports venue. The centennial will be celebrated in 2012 with numerous sports and cultural events throughout the city and at the stadium itself. In anticipation of the celebration, Arena Stockholm has been established to highlight Stockholm’s ability to organise major events. It is already by far Scandinavia’s largest event city.

Best running city RUNNER’S WORLD has named Stockholm the world’s best running city for its excellent jogging and running routes. More routes are planned and under construction. The City takes great care when planning new routes and ensures that they conform to the environment and are safe for joggers and runners. In winter, several of these are prepared for cross-country skiing. Sverker Lovén

Sports for all IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING that swimming and sport centres are disabled accessible. In construction and reconstruction, accessibility is always a priority. Special training sessions for disabled people are organised with excellent opportunities to exercise. Additionally, the Beckomberga Sports and Swimming Centre is a specialised facility for disability sports in Stockholm.

As lakes and the Baltic Sea freeze, tour skating is one of the most popular activities. The 80-kilometre race Vikingarännet on the Lake Mälaren is held annually in February and attracts some 4,000 skaters. All Stockholmers are welcome to the Sport Administration’s skating rinks where slots are reserved for the general public each day.
