Hiko Ranch History

Stewart’s Hiko Ranch came into being soon after World War II when four of the six Stewart brothers – Gilbert, Alden, Neil, and Harold – homesteaded the land under the Desert Land Entry Act and the Pittman Underground Water Act. Alden, Neil, and Harold had just returned home from combat in the War. Electric power lines did not reach the ranch site, the brothers needed funds not just to drill wells but also to purchase diesel generators. They got the money from Neil’s wife, Velma, who had saved $5,000 from her earnings and Neil’s combat pay while he was overseas ($55,000 in today’s values). She had saved the money to buy the couple’s first home they could call their own, something she would not get for another eight years. The brothers irrigated about 600 acres, using over-night reservoirs and flood irrigating. They fenced the land using war-surplus concertina wire and cedar posts cut and hauled from Delamar Mountain. They were tremendously proud of their first stacks of baled alfalfa hay. They had made a stretch of desert green and productive.

Furthermore, in the 1960’s, their brother Cyril acquired the Ranch from his brothers, but in the 1980’s Alden, Neil, Harold and another brother, Gerald, acquired the Ranch back from Cyril. At that time, under Neil’s supervision, wheel lines were installed for irrigation. In 2002, Neil’s family became the sole owner of the Ranch and converted the irrigation system to center-pivots. The family also managed after much effort to reacquire previously lost water rights so as to return production to the original 600-acre level. In the process, the family drilled new wells, naming the most productive “Velma’s Well.” (In the late 1940’s, the brothers had named the wells dug with Velma’s money after themselves; hence the references to this day to “Alden’s Well” and “Harold’s Well.”) The Ranch is now farmed using best agricultural practices. The farmer is Paul Mathews, a highly respected community and church leader in Lincoln County.
