Staying Healthy Part I: Diet

9:30-9:45 Ice Breaker What was the best thing that happened this last week? What was the worst thing that happened this last week?

It's no secret that Americans are fat -- and getting fatter by the burger. Nearly one-third of U.S. adults are overweight, and another third are technically obese, as defined by a body-mass index of more than 30 (Forbes, updated 4/13/2005 by Leah Hoffmann and Lacey Rose). And Americans aren't happy about it. Last year, we spent an estimated $46 billion on diet products and self-help books. Much of that money is wasted. Indeed, a government review found that two-thirds of American dieters regained all the weight they had lost within a year, and 97 percent had gained it all back within five years. And following these regimes is significantly more expensive than the tried and true technique of eating less and exercising more. Obesity is one of the factors causing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. First lady Michelle Obama launched a program in February 2010 called Let’s Move to fight childhood obesity. According to Obama, "the physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake." 9:45-10:05 Vocabulary and Conversation Directions: Explain and give examples of any new vocabulary. 10:40-11:00 Bible Study: Lost Sheep - Luke 15:1-7 1

Dishonest tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus’ sermons; 2 but this caused complaints from the Jewish religious leaders and the experts on Jewish law because he was associating with such despicable people—even eating with them! 3-4

So Jesus used this illustration: “If you had a hundred sheep and one of them strayed away and was lost in the wilderness, wouldn’t you leave the ninety-nine others to go and search for the lost one until you found it? 5 And then you would joyfully carry it home on your shoulders. 6 When you arrived you would call together your friends and neighbors to rejoice with you because your lost sheep was found. 7

“Well, in the same way heaven will be happier over one lost sinner who returns to God than over ninety-nine others who haven’t strayed away!

Words You May Not Know: Dishonest = not honest; Tax collector = a Jew who collects taxes for the Roman government, hated by the people because they were greedy; notorious = known for something bad; Sinner = a person who did wrong actions and had wrong thoughts against God; Sermon = God’s message; Jewish religious leaders = religious leaders who opposed Jesus; the experts on Jewish law = teacher of the law of God; associating = connecting to; despicable = awful; illustration = example; strayed away = wandered away; wilderness (desert) = a very dry place where nothing will grow or live; rejoice = full of joy; Heaven = God’s home / the home God prepares for people who believe in Jesus Jesus Searches for People who are Lost – Luke 15:1-7 In this story the good shepherd is Jesus. The lost sheep is a sinner who is far from God, someone who is lost. The Jewish religious leaders and teachers of the law thought God would not care about sinners who are lost –

they thought that sinners and lost people are not valuable. But Jesus loves lost sheep. He is telling us, “I am someone who searches for a lost sheep until I find it.

What is Jesus telling us in this story?

1. We are all lost. You might be surprised, but on our own, humans are all lost. Why? Because on our own, we do not follow God. Sheep must follow and obey a shepherd, otherwise they will be lost. Humans must follow and obey God, otherwise we will be lost. If we do not follow God, we follow ourselves – and we cause trouble for others. We judge people the way the religious leaders judged the sinners. The Bible tells us that we need to be found by Jesus; He has a heart for lost people. 2. Jesus searches for the lost. Jesus says, “If you had a hundred sheep and one of them strayed away and was lost in the wilderness, wouldn’t you leave the ninety-nine others to go and search for the lost one until you found it?” Why would Jesus search for the lost sheet? The Bible tells us it is because Jesus made us and He loves us: “… you are precious to me and honored, and I love you.” (Isa. 43:4) We do not deserve to be found, but Jesus searches for us. This is the heart of God. 3. Jesus cares for the lost. The Bible tells us we are all lost. We are selfish and greedy like the notorious sinners. We are prideful and ignorant like the religious leaders. The good news is that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who comes to find us. He truly accepts, cares, loves, and guides everyone who turns from his own way and follows Jesus. He gives us a path to follow in the Bible, which is the Word of Life. 4. Jesus rejoices when He finds the lost. The Bible message is that when Jesus finds us, we must turn from our lost way (repent) and turn to Jesus’ way (believe). We begin to follow Him home. This brings Jesus real joy. He is always happy when even one person turns to Him and becomes His child. So, Christ says, “10 I (Jesus), the Messiah have come to search for and to save such souls as his.” (Luke 19:10)
