Goat Genetic Resources of Odisha

Black Bengal o Mostly found in Western & Northern  Odisha

Ganjam  o Meat Breed mostly found in South Odisha o Medium sized, tall, leggy

o Twinning is common, 1st kidding at  22 months and reared in small units  (5‐20)

o 1st kidding at 28 months o Mostly reared by Gola community in flocks  of (2003‐300)

Sheep Genetic Resources of Odisha Bolangir Meat Breed mostly found in Western Odisha Medium sized, light brown colour

Ganjam Mostly found in South Odisha Medium sized, short tail, long drooping ear, Brown with black/ white patches

Kendrapada Second sheep breed in India and sixth in the world, which carries FecB mutation, responsible for prolificacy

Small Animal Breeding Policy o Odisha is one of the leading State to implement comprehensive pro-poor Livestock Policy in 2002 o Recommended breeding policy for sheep and goat is selective breeding within the existing distinctive Orissa breeds of sheep and goat o Potential Districts for Sheep development o Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bolangir, Gnajam and Kalahandi o Potential Districts for Goat development o Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bolangir and Ganjam

Successful Intervention in Odisha Routine Deworming of Goat and Sheep o In a large scale, deworming of 7 lakh goat population with Dectomax introduced in January, 2009 across the State. o Thereafter, under State Plan, Deworming of Small animal is a regular activity. Last Year, 14.90 lakh goats and Sheep were dewormed. Mortality has reduced from 29 % to 13 % o Under National Mission for Protein Supplementation, 67 Goat Clusters identified and around 2500 goats are dewormed in each cluster. 50 Goat Scouts engaged

o 31,000 Small Ruminants insured

Goat Development under “KALYANI”

o Five Districts namely, Bolangir, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Deogarh and Mayurbhanj selected o

1500 Groups formed in 25 Clusters and 250 Field Guides are working

o Routine Deworming, Vaccination, Supply of Breeding Buck, Awareness meeting, Goat Rally are organized o 1280 Bucks supplied to Groups o Exchange of Bucks amongst the goat groups o 7637 kids born (54% twinning)

Capacity Building of Veterinary Staff o DFID supported for development of Training Manual on ‘Small Animal Management’ for Veterinary Doctors and Pravets o Consultancy services can be provided to others by SMILE. o Under Central Scheme ‘Training for All’ through DoPT, 397 Veterinary Doctors and 1040 Paravets trained covering all 30 Districts during last 3 years. o Details of such modules are available at http://www.itpndfc.in/ o 84 Master trainers created o Sensitization Workshop with Line Department, PRI members and NGOs o 133 Veterinary Doctors sent for Exposure Visit to CIRG, Mathura and CSWRI

o Convergence with ATMA for training and exposure o Passing On Gift (POG) Approach adopted in collaboration with Heifer International

o Under IWMP, 1984 Health Camps organized and 13393 farmers supplied with 57,458 animals during last 3 years

o Under OTELP, Goat Sheds/ Training provided o Under OCTMPS, 220 Deworming Camps and 182 Bucks supplied in Tank command area
