FROM THE CLUB MANAGER CHASE THE ACE The Jackpot now stands at $1000. Since our last newsletter the Ace of Clubs was drawn by Michael Sweeney taking home a cool $4700.00. Well done Michael. Kevin Hick drew the seven of Diamonds, Darlene Shepherd the four of Hearts, Brett Dunn the three of Hearts, Syd Buckle the seven of Diamonds, Jenny Williams the Jack of Hearts, Paul Hindley the two of Spades and Owen Vladich drew the Ace of Hearts and won himself $150.00. Each week Club members only are eligible to enter “Chase the Ace” so come down on a Wednesday evening between 5.00 and 6.30pm and see if you can take home the money. Buy a drink and the bar staff will give you a few tickets so that you can “Chase the Ace” and you may walk home with a nice bit of cash. MEMBERSHIP CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE Being successful is both great and disappointing. Great in that so many want to join us, disappointing in that we currently have in excess of 800 wanting to join and we cannot fit them in. The General Committee has closed membership until over time we reduce this number. Having a big membership does not guarantee existing members come down and use their Club and this we would love to happen. By not using the Club and just remaining a non-active member prohibits someone new from joining.

AMBROSE GOLF DAY The fourteenth annual MAAC Ambrose Golf Day was held on Sunday, 17th April at the Wembley Golf Complex. Congratulations to all at the complex as the course was fantastic and the new renovations to their clubrooms, whilst not finished, did not detract from the great day. The weather whilst not perfect went from showers early in the day to sunshine and back again. An extra special thank you goes out to our Past President and organizer for this day Ross Lockhart. Big effort, great job and as usual the day ran like clockwork. Thanks Ross. 124 keen anglers teed off at 7.00am on what proved to be a great day with most completing the course in just over four and a half hours. The drinks and hospitality buggy ably driven by key sponsors for the day Bryn and Di Allwood (Ian Diffen - City Discount Tyres, Osborne Park) circled the course and kept all well refreshed with cool drinks and chocolates. Half way round all were treated to a sausage sizzle as they crossed over, and at the completion of the game a few refreshments were had at the 19th hole. 120 players and their guests returned to the MAAC for a very eventful and enjoyable lunch and the presentation of prizes. Congratulations to all who took part in this great day and to the winners (shown later), well done. Ross Lockhart our MC for the day was in full form and kept all present on their toes.

2016 STATE BOAT ANGLING CHAMPIONSHIPS AND PATRON’S CUP Every year the State Boat Angling Championships are held at various locations around the state and this year they were hosted by the Lancelin Angling & Aquatic Club “LAAC” at Lancelin. Later in the newsletter the Captain of the MAAC reports on our success. We also fished in the annual rivalry competition the Patron’s Cup between Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club and the MAAC and our beaming Captain Kevin Murphy will tell you how we went. This is Kevin’s first year as Captain and we all hope he stays on in that role for years to come.

PATRONAGE AT THE MAAC May and June are always a quieter time of the year for functions at the Club so why not come down with your family or friends and have a meal or a drink and enjoy the view. Parking is easy and the new menu is fantastic. If every Club Member just popped in once a month it would make a big difference for the Club.

FUNCTIONS AT THE MAAC If you are planning a 40th, 50th or 60th birthday, an anniversary, wedding, Christmas function, wake or seminar let us do all the hard work for you. Our function team of Tony and Jessica will ensure your special day runs as planned and will take all the pressure off you. We supply all the audio, TV’s, dance floor etc. and can arrange for a DJ or band if required. Nothing is too hard. Give us a call and we can discuss your needs and ensure you lock away a date that suits you. Planning is what makes a function/event run smoothly and we have the team here at the MAAC that will always make you feel very special. Call 9447 1733 to discuss your needs.

CITY OF JOONDALUP COMPLETES THE WORK ON THE NEW CAR PARK All who have visited the Club recently will have seen the new car park and if not it is worth coming down to take advantage of extra parking and view the massive 70 metre mural painted on the eastern wall by the City of Joondalup. This mural depicts the aquatic species that are found in the Marmion Marine Park and gives all an insight into what lives in our ocean. We at the MAAC are very proud of this new feature, so take the time to have a good look at it!

Around the State 494 participants took place on the day and if you wish to see more the link is facebook.com/fisherswithdisabilities/. We are a big   Club and to be able to help out those less fortunate and those not able to get involved when they want was something we felt that we needed to be a part of. Well done to all around the State that assisted in this great event.

FROM THE PRESIDENT by Martin Hall Being President of the MAAC is not only a privilege but also a real pleasure especially when I see the club going from strength to strength and holding fast to the foundations on which it was established in 1953. We were recently given a copy of the minutes of a meeting when the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club was established in 1953 with its objectives to promote fishing, diving and other water sports and its great to see that we still hold to those objectives 60 odd years later, with new members joining because they want to be active in the club with many already active in the club including participating in our fishing competitions and representing the club in interclub competitions. We claim the title of “Home of Fishing in Western Australia” and proved that during March, when as a club we not only won the interclub Patron’s cup with Ocean Reef, but also once again cleaned up at the State Boat Angling Competition held in Lancelin. Whilst I was unable to make the Patron’s event, I was very proud to be numbered in the teams that represented the MAAC at the State Boat Angling Competition. It was a great moment for the Club to see Mitch Hillary take out the overall champion award even though still a Junior for the competition.

the winners circle, another proud moment for all of us I am sure you will agree. We have people prepared to wait two or three years to be part of this club and as fast as we can get new members in, even more have joined the waiting list. It is an ongoing problem, but one I would rather have than the struggle other clubs have in recruiting members. Of course we not only need a strong membership list, we also need active members who are proud to be known as MAAC members and bring their family and friends down to get involved in the various aspects of our club. So be proud of your club, get involved, and join the fishing, dive, darts or pool competitions. Come down for a drink, a meal or a function and bring your friends to show off the fact that you are a privileged member of the MAAC. Look forward to seeing you at the club Martin Hall PRESIDENT

Whilst fishing and dive will remain the foundation of this club, it’s great to see we continue to cater for those members who prefer to represent the club in darts or pool and again advance the great name of the MAAC in this state. We have again this year entered the Club of the Year competition run by Clubs WA and I am confident will once again find the club and its staff and volunteers in

ANZAC Day at the MAAC

DRINKING OR SMOKING IN FRONT OF THE CLUB IS PROHIBITED Please refrain from smoking or taking drinks outside the entrance door. The Club permits smoking out on the balcony on the ocean side not near the kitchen and the drinking of alcohol out the front of the Club is not permitted by law. Please abide by this direction as set by the General Committee.

ADRENALIN AND ADVENTURE IN QUEENSTOWN Our clients quite often come in looking for a holiday close to home that can offer great scenery, good food and wine and excitement! I was lucky enough to get all this and more when I travelled to Queenstown New Zealand with a group of girlfriends to celebrate a BIG birthday in January. What an amazing time we had! We stayed on the shores of Lake Wakatipu overlooking the incredible Remarkables. What a fabulous start to our day every morning, to wake up to this view! Our apartments were about 10 minutes from town and we had the option of either the shuttle that went every hour or as we had hired an 8 seater van, we could drive ourselves. As Queenstown is known as the adventure capitol of the world, we planned to do as many activities as we could, or were brave enough to do! Day one we were off to the Sky Gondola up to Bob’s Peak where the view of the Lake and mountains is truly magnificent. First we lineup for a ride on the luge where there are two tracks available, must do learners first, then go for it on the big track! After a buffet lunch in the Stratosphere Restaurant, it was time to really get the adrenalin racing and try the steepest Zip line in the world. It didn’t quite hit me until we came to this line, the last of six, just how steep this was – my knees were knocking, hands sweating and heart racing, didn’t think I could do it, but with no other way down, I had no choice but to get hooked on, hold my breath and take that step into nothing! Zip line ticked, never doing it again!!! Day two Shotover and white water rafting! Again adrenalin plus, heart in your mouth, soaking wet, BUT, survived and another tick! As if that wasn’t enough for one day some of the girls decided it might be a good idea to jump out of a plane! Not me I tell you, but five of them took the plunge (literally) and just loved it! Still can’t convince me though, why would you want to jump out of a perfectly good plane! Day three was a bit wet and windy, so into town, long, lazy lunch, a bit of shopping then we decided to go to the Ice Bar. This is a small bar that is at -9 degrees and everything is made of ice including your glass. They give you a huge

by Carol Shaw

head to knee fur lined jacket with gloves and then in you go. They have a range of cocktails – all taste very good and you get one free drink with your entrance fee, plus they have a photo booth and a table top hockey game. Lots of fun, but you can’t stay in for more than about 20 minutes as your gloves get wet and everything starts to freeze, so another tick, and I would go back – we did on the last night! Day four and five were touring days to Arrowtown and Lake Wanaka, both lovely little towns with the scenery on the way again spectacular. Wanaka is known for its incredible Maze – what fun! On day six, most of us had decided we must Paraglide off the Gondola Skyline Peak. So up we went, as the wind was not very strong we had to walk about 700 metres straight up this very rough track, have to say it was so strenuous by the time I got to the top I was not even thinking of what I was about to do! We were all going tandem with an experienced flyer, and my instructor was a Frenchman named George. Before I knew what was happening he had me strapped in, was telling me to make sure I walked in time with him and the next moment we were flying! Wow, how amazing, I can’t tell you how incredible it was, just floating in air and looking at the most breathtaking scenery everywhere! I loved it - although my heart was beating “a million miles an hour”. A huge tick and yes I would do it again!! To top the day off, two of our adrenalin junkies decided to do the Canyon Swing, which is a 60 metre rope suspended over a 109 metre drop to the river. You are attached to the rope and then you step into mid air and fall until the length of the rope, then swing back and forward until it stops then you are winched up – then guess what, you can do it again for half price!!! They loved it, but absolutely no way for me! This was an amazing holiday in a fabulous place. We flew to Sydney, then onto Queenstown direct, same coming home. Although it is pricy to do all the activities, food and drink is not expensive – and you can buy great seafood and fresh vegies to cook your own. What an adventure, oh, and I almost forgot, we went Segwaying as well, great fun and would love to do that again also! If this sounds like something you would like to do, come and see me and I will help you have one of the most exciting holidays you will ever have!

CAPTAIN’S REPORT by Kevin Murphy APRIL 2016 FISHING COMPETITION After the previous two monthly competitions had to be cancelled due to poor weather it was great to get this month’s going. Conditions were not fantastic with offshore 15knot east south easterly winds blowing all day. A total of 23 boats took to the water with 52 Anglers trying their luck as well as a couple of Divers (Scuba), however the Spearfishermen did not join us as they competed in another competition in Lancelin. It was great to see some new names up on the board and these members having a go in the fishing competition. Sorry that I couldn’t turn the weather on but there will be better days ahead. The Dhufish winner went to Steve Mongan with a 7.40 kilo fish. Steve fished off Two Rocks with two visitors, Adam Falconer-West and Rickie Poole who was happy to take home the visitors prize. Roy Lukies won the Squid prize and could possibly be practicing for the May Squid Shootout Competition, which will be held on May 28th. The Garfish award went to our Manager and keen fisherman Rob Weir who fished with Shaun Murphy, both doing well with the small species. A very nice Flathead of 1.135kg went to Dave Woodcock. Terry Couldridge took out the Whiting award and Terry and Steve Trainer came Runners-Up in the Doubles competition. Fish of the Day which was carried over from the last

competition went to Darlene Shepherd with a winning Skipjack and Darlene also won the Ladies award. Mick Chessells was the winner of this month’s Fish of the Day with a good Breaksea Cod. The last Fish of the Day award went to Gerard Murphy with his King George Whiting. He was also awarded the largest Herring and largest Baldchin prizes. Gerard had a fantastic bag comprising of 10 Species. This does not happen too often so thought it is a good idea to name the ten as follows: Baldchin Groper, Breaksea Cod, Garfish, Herring, King George Whiting, Samson Fish, Skipjack, Tailor, Salmon and Tuna. Gerard took out the Singles and together with Glen Carter won the Doubles. Justin Rose was Singles Runner-up with a bag of 18.77 pts. Brett Dunn caught the largest Snapper weighing 3.67 kg. The Junior winner who is always in the winning circle was Sarah Chessells. Coming up soon are the following: on May 21st and 22nd is the Rock and Beach Competition. Tight Lines, Kevin.

POOL REPORT by Kevin Craft MAAC DOUBLES POOL CHAMPIONSHIP Doubles games are not something that we tend to play very often, and they are quite a different kettle of fish to the normal singles matches. The CPA winter season does have a doubles match in the middle of the tournament. So in our hunger for some silverware this year we decided to hold a doubles match to find the best pairs to put forward in the CPA. This match was run as a round-robin over three Wednesday nights in the off-season. Clint & myself were doing very well and were top of the wozza until the final round when we met Paul & Keith. We ended up with a very respectable 72.2% game win rate but unfortunately were one match win behind them. Mason & Greg and Paul & Keith were both on 72.2% and both had won the same number of matches. The countback revealed that Keith & Paul had defeated Mason & Greg 2 games to 1, so congratulations to Keith & Paul the 2016 MAAC Doubles champions. The top four pairs that will be competing in the CPA tournament will be; Paul Cain & Keith Alderslade Mason Cuthbert & Greg Fussell Clint Stonier & Kevin Craft Dave Burnley & Ben Horgan CLUB POOL ASSOCIATION The new winter season has just started on the 13th April. Due to the results from the PEPF summer competition we decided to revert to our former team construct in the hope that Paul Cain will once again be able to play his favourite Queen song – “We are the champions” At the time of writing we have just completed the first of 14 rounds.

Marmion Angling & Aquatic Club W.A.

The Marlins got off to a shocking start having been defeated by Osborne Park Aces, Last year’s premiers, 20 games to 5! The Piranhas faired a lot better and took victory from the Osborne Park Kings by 16 games to 9. Congratulations to Paul Cain & Peter Craft for each winning 5 out of 5 on the night. These matches are played on Wednesday nights in the Sea Wall bar. Each week one of the MAAC teams will be playing at home. The fixtures for the winter tournament are on the notice board and members are welcome to come along and cheer for their team.

MONTHLY COMPETITION On the last Sunday of each month we hold a pool competition open to all CPA players and MAAC members and their guests. There is a $10 entry fee with a guaranteed first prize of $100 and second prize is a $25 MAAC voucher. Since my last report we have had only one competition as one of the days fell on the Easter long week-end and was therefore cancelled. On the 28th February we had eleven hopefuls enter the fray. It was good to see a couple of newcomers in the form of Anthony Bezzene and Matt Whitfield. Carl Harrison from Innaloo is usually the frontrunner, but not this time. Clint Stonier clawed his way into the final and managed to restore the MAAC’s honour by defeating Carl by 2 games to 1. The next monthly competition will be held on the 29th May.

Pool report continued... If you are interested in having a go, or just want to watch, check the Grapevine for news of this event. It is generally on the last Sunday of the month but can sometimes change if it is a public holiday or clashes with another event. We are always looking for new players, so please drop in on a Monday night, have a few games and find out more about the Pool Club. If you would like to get regular updates on what is happening with the MAAC Pool club please email me at [email protected] Until next time... Kevin Craft MAAC POOL CLUB

DIVE SECTION REPORT by Paul Hillary Well for a change we managed to get out on the water and dive this month. Saturday 19th March there was a little rain but dive conditions were good with no swell and light wind. 20 of us went out on a Perth Dive Academy Charter diving for Crays in the Cray day which we coordinated with ORSSC and Hillarys Yacht Club. Over half the divers were from ORSSC but we caught most of the Crays, with Fraser Kelly catching his bag limit of eight on his first dive, then was Chris Holman with five and Bevan Beames with a few as well. We dived two spots on the North side of Rottnest and were back at Hillarys by about 2pm. The Sunday saw four boats from MAAC and about the same from ORSSC for another dive. Hillarys club boat was away at Lancelin fishing in the State Boats so they had no one on the water, but came back to the cook up at ORSSC in Ocean Reef where we barbecued the catch. All of our boats caught their boat limits so there were plenty of Crays to eat, there was even enough left over for some of the non divers to take a feed home. Thanks to all the members that took the time to go out and catch the Crays for the day, this made it a very enjoyable day. Next year we will be having the cook up in our Boatshed.

FREMANTLE HARBOUR CLEAN UP We have about 20 members going down to Fremantle to help with the annual clean so will report in the next newsletter. DIVE TRIPS The Scuba and Spearfishing section have both got trips going to the Abrolhos in May so we should have some good photos. OVERSEAS DIVE TRIPS The next years overseas dive trip to Bali - Komodo Island is filling quickly, with only a few spots left, so if you or anyone you may know are interested please contact me. COMPRESSOR COURSE I have a lot of interest from members that want to use the club compressor. You will have to do the course for the clubs compressor, this only takes a few hours on a weekend. You will receive a key that gives you access to the compressor room outside of club hours and a certification card. You are then able to purchase a fill card at a cost of $2.50 a fill which is a lot cheaper than most dive shops. If you are keen to do the course, the cost is $100, please contact me. INFORMATION If you would like to talk about anything dive related being equipment, courses, dive trips, Spearfishing or dive location please give me a call or drop me an email. PATRON’S CUP 5TH & 6TH MARCH 2016 It was the MAAC Club’s turn to host the annual Patron’s Cup. This Competition is held between local rivals Ocean Reef Sea Sport Club (ORSSC) and the Marmion Angling & Aquatic Club (MAAC). This has been going on for approximately 36 years. The venue for this competition was Jurien Bay as it has been for the past few years. Friday night at the Sandpiper Tavern was where we all met, enjoyed a few refreshments and socialised with the crowd from ORSSC. There was a lot of banter about which team was going to bring home the prize as this is very special to both Clubs. Although the weather didn’t look too good the decision was made to fish the next day. The fishermen all roared out loud egging their teams to take on the challenge and so the scene was set. As predicted the weather was not perfect, however we all set out to sea. The MAAC had 55 anglers competing and Ocean Reef had 24. The MAAC had the best of 24 bags so

this went against Ocean Reef. This competition is a species competition with 1 point going to a species and 3 for the heaviest fish. Our score consisted of 1 bag of 6 species, 6 bags of 5, 6 bags of 4 and 11 bags of 3 species. This gave us a total of 93 points. We had 27 bonus points with 9 of the largest species. A total of 127 points. The MAAC won and the Silver Trophy is back in our cabinet.

The Sandpiper owner gave both Clubs a prize for the most meritorious catch. Our member Grant Bird was the winner of this award for a Samson fish of 16.86kg caught while catching Herring at the red marker. Ladies winner was Kerry Lukies with a nice Dhufish of 17.38 kg. Well done to all our anglers who travelled up to Jurien to compete in this competition and also much appreciation must go to all volunteers who gave up their valuable time to make it happen. Kevin

STATE BOAT ANGLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 19TH MARCH 2016 Friday evening all members met at the Lancelin Angling and Aquatic Club (LAAC) and enjoyed a great meal and refreshments. All signs were indicating a tough competition looming as the weather was certainly not on our side. The LAAC were represented by 40 eager anglers, Ocean Reef also had a good turnout as did Mindarie and Perth Offshore Clubs.

Champion went to Mitch Hillary with 142 points and Mitch did so well that he also carried out the overall winner of the competition being the “Champion Angler”. The MAAC was announced as State Boat Champions for 2016 something that as Club Captain I am very proud of. Congratulations go out to all anglers who participated and fished over the weekend.

Marmion members met with Pat Shinnick, competition organiser for years and years where they presented him with a MAAC shirt and a bottle of Port to show our appreciation for all he does with the AAA State Boats Competition.

MAAC species winners were:

Our accommodation destination was not too hard to find in Gee Street, as boats and vehicles were overflowing from Darren’s house. A big thank you from all members who were able to stay goes out to Darren Lockhart, MAAC member as his hospitality and Panadol were greatly appreciated! On Saturday morning as members came to sign in, a breakfast was hosted at the Lancelin club by the local P & C. What a great community they have in Lancelin. Members of the Lancelin Sea Rescue provided a number of tractors which helped launch and retrieve all club boats. Fabulous assistance by all their members and we couldn’t have done it without them. After the start was called at 6.30am all boats headed off to their chosen destinations. Most stayed in close to try and catch the smaller species. Here they witnessed a thunderstorm and drenching rain.

Overall it was a great weekend, with lots of stories, too many to mention all. However Kerry Silvey might have thought she needed a passport after venturing so far out to sea. Lyn Whelan was unlucky to not land a good Shark at her boat. Young Max Castiglioni wasn’t too sure about fishing as the thunder and lightning struck. I also think many of our members would have needed a few quiet days after such a weekend. Personally I would like to thank all MAAC Anglers who I feel give their best in all competitions and never let the side down. How proud we are to belong to such a great Club with such wonderful members! Kevin Murphy CLUB CAPTAIN

Well done to all anglers with open boats for sticking it out in these uncomfortable conditions. The wind played a big part on the day with a south-easterly 1015 knots, turning southerly by noon. Along with the fish not biting very often, it really was a tough day out. The freezer truck was closing its doors at 3.30pm so all boats were in on time. The weigh-in started at 4.30pm at the Lancelin Headquarters. This took a couple of hours as there were so many bags to get through and our thanks goes out to Glenn Omond for assisting with the running commentating during the afternoon. Also thanks to all the volunteers for hosting such a great competition. Presentations commenced and it was fantastic to see the results as they were chalked up on the board. Our MAAC anglers had lots to be happy about as the winners of the Mens, Ladies, Juniors were announced and our Veteran MAAC team came runners-up. Nadine Freeman won individual Ladies champion with a total of 87.1 points. The Junior

MAAC JUNIORS by Simon Irvine THE END OF ANOTHER FUN-FILLED SEASON MAAC Juniors have had a very busy couple of months since the last newsletter, and on most occasions the weather was fantastic, with events including: Matilda Bay Crabbing Day, Patron’s Cup in Jurien Bay, Moore River Kayaking Day, State Boat Championships in Lancelin and End of Season Windup at Rottnest Island. “Chase the Shark” has been eventually won on the last day of Juniors at the Boatshed. Claire Reid’s name was drawn from the bucket and she chose the correct envelope. The lucky prize was a telescopic fishing rod and tackle box. Jai Wilson and Michael Sumner went fishing in the MAAC Dinghy with their parents behind a local reef and came back with a great haul of fish, included in their catch were several monster Tailor. Great effort!! Sunday 28th February we headed down to Matilda Bay in the Swan River for a try at crabbing. This year we delayed the event by a few months hoping there would be more crab activity. Did a bit of reconnaissance work a few weekends earlier and yep, the crabs were in! After setting and retrieving crab nets from Matilda Bay to well past the Old Brewery and only landing several crabs, we realised the crabs had probably moved into deeper water. Our ropes weren’t long enough. Not to worry, we still entertained ourselves with kayaks, great weather and better company.

Once arriving at Guilderton, Simon and the boys loaded all the kayaks back into the trailer and then we all sat and relaxed with a bit of lunch and a well earned drink. Great day was had by all. Sunday 3rd April saw the end of the 2015-16 Juniors season with our third annual trip to Rottnest Island. A BIG thank you to the MAAC, Rottnest fast ferries and all the kids, family and friends that made it the memorable day that it was. The forecast was for perfect weather and our day at Rottnest did not disappoint. Happy faces, 28 degrees, a sun shiney day and a calm ferry trip over to Rotto meant we knew it was going to be a good day. An early start at the terminal with nobody missing the boat we boarded at 7.30am. Many came prepared with bikes for some active exercise, and most with their goggles and snorkel to explore the majestic Rotto delights of life under the sea. Some of the older juniors came equipped with surfboards, snorkelling gear, catch bags and crayfish loops. A skilful few managed to strike gold.

Sunday 13th March was a very warm day (41 degrees) to be spent kayaking down Moore River. A great turnout and with all the kayaks unloaded we got sailing down the river, kids and adults having a few dips to cool off along the way. We got to the sand dunes which proved a bit too hot for many to challenge. Was a nice resting spot none the less!!

tinnies whenever required and ensured safety for the kids wanting to have a run out on the ocean. Darlene Shepherd produced the MAAC juniors Magazine this season with lots of information, photos and weekly schedule. Thank you again Darlene. Organisation, text message reminders and support to the President did not go unnoticed and I would like to thank our secretary, Mrs Kim Cook for her wonderful efforts with this again this past season. A big thank you is also extended to the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club who each Sunday provided two life savers to patrol our beach, well done. Finally, thank you to Robert Weir and the MAAC for the continued support of the Juniors Division. Without the ongoing assistance of the MAAC, our Juniors would not exist. Please continue in the future to be part of the club and the juniors. Parental support and involvement in MAAC Juniors is vital so please let me know if you are available to help out in any way for the 20162017 season commencing mid October 2016. Look forward to seeing you all again. After disembarking on the island there was a large group that headed to the Basin for swimming and snorkelling. Others took the bus around the island, some rode to Salmon Bay and another group rode to the west end. The ease of travel options on Rottnest and the whole day to decide meant that a range of sites were seen, treasures discovered and experiences enjoyed. The older kids caught the bus around to Strickland’s Bay and scored pumping head-high waves then ventured to a secret spot and came back with a bag full of crays. After lunch, all 25 kids enjoyed the rest of the afternoon climbing, jumping and frolicking on the many inflatable slides, rockers and obstacles at the Fun Park in Thompson’s Bay. The ferry home was a boat full of sunburnt faces and exhausted kids, what a fantastic way to end the MAAC Juniors season!

Simon Irvine

A special mention and huge thank you to Michael Chessels, who volunteered (weather permitting), every Sunday to take keen junior fisherpersons out to drop a line. Every week the kids came back with a decent haul of inshore species including herring and whiting. There wasn’t a day when the kids returned without having caught a fish. So thank you Mick. We know these Juniors learnt valuable fishing lessons whilst out fishing with you. I must thank all the members of the MAAC Juniors Committee who helped out during the season with particularl mention to Mick O’Donnell and family who kept the juniors fed the whole season with his donation of time cooking the BBQ and supply of the yummy sausages for our regular Sunday Sausage sizzle. Paul Sumner and Shane Wilson helped with the MAAC

CLUB MEMBER’S VIEW ON SHARKS by Ken Matthews Some time back I wrote an article in the Club Newsletter stating I was 14 NM out to sea going to a great fishing spot with well known fisherman Steve Bevis (Pinkie) and we came across a school of sharks that would have covered an acre of area. These sharks were feeding on a large school of Southern Blue Finn Tuna, who in turn were crashing into an immense school of Bait Fish. The sharks were of all sizes and at times you could see them coming out of the water to catch the Tuna. In 2007 to protect all species of Demersable fish the Fisheries Department put out a ban on gill netting and long lining by professional fishermen off the West Coast, in an area reaching from Lancelin in the North to Bunbury in the South, out to the 250M depth mark. Now this is a big mass of protected water and because of these bans, the build-up of the sharks are now in large proportions, since the ban started all the female baby sharks at that time have matured and pupped. In 2009 the Fisheries Department also put a ban on the five demersable species for parts of October, November and December of each following year, to protect these species, which were on the wane, from the recreation fisho. This ban has worked well and beyond all expectations, but with the glut of sharks out there the big question is, what are they eating? The food chain must show some effect shortly on the five chosen species plus other fish that form into schools, such as Herring, Tailor and Skippy plus Whiting.

Most members of our Club have always been known to be strong fishing conservationists and are strict believers in the rules and uphold the laws and the regulations issued by the fisheries dept. Some of our species sizes are greater than the fisheries list. 22

Now I am not one of the fisherman that scream out “Kill the Shark”, on the contrary I have had some great experience with large sharks over my lifetime. One was a 14’ Tiger at Bar Flats out from Shark Bay, off Denham. The other time was a huge White ripping into a big Black Sting Ray inside Centaur marker off Trigg Isle. As for the White Pointer (Carcharodon Carcharies) being a known predator mainly targeting humans for food, there could be some doubt there I tend to think the great White gets the blame for a lot of the attacks that the Bull Shark and Tiger Sharks carry out on humans. As soon as there is an attack people think straight away it is a great White that’s guilty. It was the same back in the 40’s and 50’s where any attack on a human was blamed on the fierce Grey Nurse when the real culprits could have been Bronze Whalers or Hammer Heads, as Tiger Sharks were unheard of down this far south. Now they are everywhere. The Grey Nurse was the villain and some divers even considered it fun chasing the Grey Nurse and virtually wiped them out with the illegal smokie known as a Powerhead (shotgun cartridge). The White Pointer is a very stream lined fish with a torpedo shaped body and large black eye and is king of the Oceans. They are known to grow to a length of 6m and there are some reports of them exceeding 7m in America. Their main meal consists of Fur Seals, Sea Lions, Fin Fish and of course Sharks. The great White does not feed continually, as a large meal such as a Sea Lion may last a medium size Shark up to a week. Most White Sharks have been observed scavenging on Whale carcasses and will continue to harass a Whale if they find it in distress. In the year of 1997 the White Pointer by law became a protected species and since then most mature females have given birth to numerous pups. I mentioned earlier that there is a build-up of Sharks off our West Coast. This does not mean that the great White is becoming more dominated in

Marmion Angling & Aquatic Club W.A.

our waters as according to scientific studies they could be declining. There are no current reliable estimates of the size of the great White population in Australian waters, it has been considered to be a minimum of 1500. Sexual segregation was recorded in a scientific study of great Whites, and it has been found individual males were sighted every year in certain areas, where as Female Whites showed up every other year to this area. It has been suggested that female Whites travel long distances to give birth, whereas copulation may occur in special places allowing males to return annually. These results imply a two year reproduction cycle and are known to be consistent with estimates of gestation periods. Female White Sharks nourish embryos via “Oophagous” during the first periods of pregnancy. Reported litter sizes range from four to fifteen although the maximum number of near term pups confirmed is ten. The White Shark at birth measures 120cm and weighs up to 32kg. It grows at a rate of 30cm per year but slows considerable as the Shark reaches maturity. Males mature at 3.7m (7.8 yrs) and females mature at 4.5m (12 yrs). They have been known to live to 50-60 years, dive to the depth of 1000m and weigh up to 3,000kg. Whales travel from Antarctica up to the West Coast to the North warmer waters to give birth. Is it possible the White Pointer travels long distances to give birth as well in the protected waters of the North West?

never any remains found only a piece of clothing or spear gun to identify the victim. Does the large Shark reject the taste of human flesh then leave it to the scavengers to clean up? We have had many cases where this apparently occurred throughout all Australian waters over the years. Owing to the media blowout on the Shark situation some members have asked me what my thoughts are regarding the Cull. In this article I have tried to explain and to point out a few facts that could assist in the future preservation of all the species that live in our oceans. These are my own thoughts and none are the Clubs. Some of the information is from scientific papers I have been able to gain and study.

The word “OOPHAGOUS” means egg eating, where some embryos eat their potential siblings while still in their mother’s uterus. Ken Matthews Member #624

The reason Whales seek warmer waters to give birth is if the calf was to be born in the icy waters of Antarctica it would freeze to death owing to its protective blubber not being completely formed. That is why mother and calf spend a lot of time together in the warmer nurseries of our North, going through a developing phase, before heading South again. Do the White Pointer pups find the warm water to their liking and stay there to gain strength and grow, allowing them to be strong enough to tackle the strong current and rougher waters of the Southern Oceans? White pups only feed on Fin Fish and squid etc. until they reach maturity as their jaws are not strong enough to catch and hold a large Sea Lion or Elephant Seal, but as stated earlier they are known to eat each other. I believe that the Great White, Tiger and Bull Shark have an escort of smaller Sharks that follow them around and feed off the remains of attacked victims whether it’s human or Seal. This is not the case with surfie’s or swimmers close to shore as people wade in and help them to shore. In the case of most divers in deep water and people swept out to sea, there are

DARTS FROM THE OCHE by Chris McCarthy SUMMER SEASON - TEAM RESULTS The Summer season came to a finish with differing results across the five teams representing the club.

C Grade

MAAC Blue – Unfortunately for Blue they failed to make finals this season due mainly to their inability to put together a consistent playing group each week. Team captain Gerry Pooley vowed to re-group and comeback better over the coming season. MAAC Red – Red finished “Top of the League” and went on to play finals eventually going out to Sorrento Gold in the second week. Overall it was a good season for the team and keeps their good record of playing in finals every season intact.

B2 Grade

MAAC Green - Green finished the season on a high (although last on the ladder) wining their second game for the season. Made up of a group of diehards and new recruits the feedback from the season was a great social season with the opportunity to participate and learn more about the game.

B1 Grade MAAC Black - GRAND FINAL WINNERS had a very successful season not only finished “Top of the League” but went on to win the Grand Final. A good all-round team that will now move into “A” Grade and look forward to the challenge of competing in the higher grade.

24

MAAC White - Probably the most improved team within the club with all team members increasing their averages and ability to peg. Unfortunately they played off against MAAC Black in the Grand Final and although they lost it was conceded by “Blacks” captain Julian Dinardo, they had played the better darts on the night and were only beaten to the peg!! WALLY LOTHIAN FISHING EVENT – ANZAC DAY The Wally Lothian Fishing Competition was held on Anzac Day with the usual sail past the club at 8.00am to pay tribute to all who have served and for those who had died for our country. The weather conditions on the day were terrible for the fleet however all completed the sail past to the sound of the Bag Pipes playing and then off to sea to catch a feed. The flotilla of boats in front of the Club was led by Life Member Ken Matthews with the Aussie flag flying proudly, and it was great to see a great majority of the boats also flying the flag. Geoff Kirk’s boat has flags so high I think they caused the rain. Well done Geoff the boat looked spectacular. During the sail past of the club, with the Last Post, Reveille and the Australian Anthem playing it was fantastic to see all the people lined up on the boardwalk and the beach to the north who had come down for the ceremony. After the sail past, the siren was blown and it was off to catch some fish for all our members to enjoy for lunch. The Wally Lothian is an inshore fishing competition focusing on the smaller species of fish, and after a perfect morning on the water it was back to the club before 12.00 noon to weigh in and presentations. The winners on the day were Jordan Oldfield and Blake Shepherd. The Wally is always a great day of fun and camaraderie at the MAAC and it was fantastic to see members old

and new enjoying the event. For the Wally Lothian to be such a successful day requires a lot of hard work from a lot of people. I’m sure that all the members who attended on the day were very grateful for the splendid job that was performed and it is certainly a great way to spend Anzac day, and a time to remember how lucky we are living here in Australia. A big thank you goes out to Ken Matthews and Les Gillies for setting up the Boatshed, to Chef and his crew for supplying bar snacks and especially to Lesley Collins, Brian Green, Glenn Williams, Terry Couldridge, Bob Pendlebury and Val Jackson for displaying their culinary skills in cooking up all the fish and to Rob Collins, Grant Bird, Ken Jackson for helping distribute the fish. To our FDO Ken Jackson and to our Radio Officer Rob Collins, great job as always to the both for your organisation and help on the day distributing fish. A big thank you also to our Club Manager Robert Weir who organises the entire day and makes sure as usual all runs smoothly. See you all at the MAAC next year when we will again hold this ceremony down on the beach and in the Boatshed. Below are some photos from the day and many more are published at www.maac.com.au.

WELL I DIDN’T KNOW THAT... Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle and guests got the top, or ‘’The Upper Crust’’. In the 1500’s most people got married in June, because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to smell, brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. When the English started running out of places to bury people, they would dig up coffins, take out the bones and reuse them. When reopening these coffins, 1 in 25 were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realised they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, thread it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus someone could be, ‘’Saved by the Bell ‘’or was considered a ‘’Dead Ringer’’. Do you believe it?
