Australian Nationals WESTERN AUSTRALIA was represented in the Classic Accuracy competition by a couple of local jumpers, Julian Kaloczy and Don Woodland. Don bettered his placing in last year’s meet by coming 5th with a score of 0.64 m over ten rounds. Keep an eye out for the next issue of SWANChat when we will announce the venue for the Fourth Dave Lock Memorial Accuracy Meet. This competition has been instrumental is encouraging the recent interest in Classic Accuracy in the state (see right). 4-way Ebone (Peter Etherton) is our new Australian 4 way champion. Ebone will be off to Croatia to represent Australia.

SWANChat comes of age (almost!)

Feb-Apr 2004

State Accuracy Meet, 2003 THE STATE ACCURACY meet was held the weekend 15/16 November and due to weather the Swoop competition did not happen. There were five competitors willing and able but the winds were just too much. Classic accuracy was held on Sunday when the weather improved with 13 competitors. Reigning champions remain with Don Woodland winning the Open and Ewan McNab winning the Novice (this will be his last Novice comp with only five jumps left to 200). The Novice competition was very close with the final round deciding the placement of first and second and third and fourth. Ewan and Amanda Lloyd were even on the end of the fourth round. Ewan hit the pad and Amanda could only manage the pit. In the competition between third and fourth it was a reversal of the positions from the Dave Lock memorial. This time big Bruce Jensen got the third position over Ashley Saunders. The final scores were: Open Don Woodland 1.91, Karen Norfield 5.23, Andy Ullaga 6.72 Novice Ewan McNab 19.18, Amanda Lloyd 23.54, Bruce Jensen 36.93 The conditions were tricky with stronger winds dying down to light winds with a bit of turbulence. Thanks to Clive and Jean for running the event and the catering. Laura Lock for coming down on Saturday to assist judging, Jan Burge for Judging, Barb Hughes for assisting judging and Michelle Kosmer for taking stills shots at the pit. I would like to thank all the competitors for their participation and fun attitude. it was a pleasure to be at the pit all day - well nearly:-) Shirley

THEY SAID it would never last! The next issue of SWANChat will be issue 20 and mark five years since the idea of a state newsletter was first put forward to State Council by the Sporting Skydivers. We need you The continuation of the newsletter and website depends on you continuing to contribute your news, ideas and opinions. I’d particularly like to hear from jumpers who started jumping after the birth of SWANChat - drop me a line with a skydiving tale. And, of course, I always like to get photos. AMANDA LLOYD and Ash Saunders gained their Starcrests whilst visiting Picton over the Christmas break where they did more than 20 jumps each. Whilst at Picton they met up with Shirley, Dixie, Ray and Nathan. Even though the XL 750 did not arrive, there had been delays in getting it off the production line (which is another story) there were plenty of fun jumps to be had out of the Skyvan and the Beaver. Amanda gained the honour of being thrown out of the Skyvan and Ash gained the honour of running from the front and doing a front somersault whilst chasing to get in on a 10-way. Shirley and Dixie were invited to jump on Phil Onis' 20,000 jump, which was a 19-way with jump numbers totalling over 123,000 for the load. It was interesting to note that the base was taken out by somebody with more than 3,000 jumps. It did rebuild and 2-points were achieved. We just didn't manage the 19way right-hand donut that was planned for the 3rd point. Ewan McNab has gained his D licence and Shirley Cowcher her F licence.

YORK HAS BEEN a flurry of skydiving since the last issue of Swanchat, however the big news was the Australia Day Lotto Skyworks display jump. Once again the weather gods blessed us and we had absolutely beautiful jumping conditions! 47 jumpers, over four loads, performed various forms of skydiving, so there was something for everyone. Celebrations continued into the wee small hours of the following morning, where the pubs in Northbridge copped a dose of happy skydivers. The feed back from the public, the City of Perth and the skydivers (thank you) was amazing! Well done and a big thank you to everyone, the jumpers, ground crew, pilots and organizers. A special thanks to Stan (as always, a legendary effort), GT, Johno, Grunter, Stots, Steph, Ian “Skydive Express” Washborne (the man with a face for radio) and the fantastic Dick Stainton for his effort on the water. Christmas Party The Skydive Express Christmas party went off with a bang and included a special visit from a very bright and breezy Santa. Cheryls legendary dinner had everyone beaming, as usual. A brilliant night was had by all, after a great 8 way comp. Congrats to Full Throttle, who had an exciting win over the favourites Hand Brake, with Klowns R Us coming in third. The judging at the bar during dinner proved to work and may become tradition! A special thanks to those who joined in with the Christmas spirit and

1000 up WELL after a "mere" 14 years I've finally cracked 1000. Seems like a good time to thank everyone who has jumped with me over the years. Its been great !!! Spud (Paul Tait did his 1000th jump on Saturday, celebrating with a last-light 16-way and then being thrown into the pool at a late hour.)

“dropped in” from other dropzones. 4 way news Also the Shelver’s, the team that came west to train for the Intermediate 4 way, are now national champions. The team had 3 visits with over 150 jumps. Carly’s Angels have been jumping this weekend (Ange, Tania, Vicki, Steph & Crispy on Vid). Dirty Sanchez (Keith Watson, Craig Wallace, Wedgee, Matt Harris and Murf on vid) Kaos (Paul Yates, Joe A, Jeremy Paul, Mason and Damo on vid) are doing regular training weekends. The FIRST Four way Saturday (which is every Saturday after the video night) is on. If you want to get better at four-way we will have coached jumps with video – this is the way to improve your relative work skills. Please book in through the office. Other York Stuff The new fooze table is at the DZ! The upstairs area now has a DVD and sound system (and sounds great!). It is good that Cookie has been keeping his flying current. He has done York to Hillman – York to Pinjarra – Formation with the Caravan at the skyshow Emma Chick’s hop & pop day’s are going off. Some great CRW has been happening at the dropzone, including an 8 stack built by 6,500 with Don Woodland, Crispy, Clive, Mossy, Johno, Cookie, Sheryl & Dave Wilkie. Rumour has it that a new state record attempt (14+) will be made this year! Special message – packers wanted – you have to have (or get) a packer B packing license and be approved by Dave Wilkie – Please contact Mossy on 9444 4199, if you are interested. Congratulations to Tom and Tracey Lancaster on the birth of their baby, Jack.

Turkish Meet THE TURKISH Memorial “Pops versus Pups” 3 way competition will be held next month. Pops members are required to be 40 years old and over (and preferably a POPS member) whilst the Pups are under 40 years old. Competition to be held on the 13th of March 2004 (Turkish’s family are coming over from Japan for a visit and are looking forward to seeing everyone again). Mick is in the process of sourcing some great prizes (like he did last year), so get a team together and register your interest with the office, as it promises to be a great weekend.

Kangaroo Tales

York 8-way

RECENTLY I organised for the Chuting Stars and some 'friends' to go down to Busselton a couple of weeks before Christmas to do some 9/10 ways out of the Islander. To celebrate the 40 year anniversary (to the day!) of my first free-fall, a 5 second delay from a Rapide at Weston-on-the-Green (UK), I organised a 10-way 'Sunset' load onto the beach Saturday evening. After we had built a nice 10-way cluster and were all under canopy, Don Biggins must have spotted some movement in the scrub and elected to land for a look-see! Whereupon he was promptly set about by a very aggressive, and highly territorial, kangaroo! Don, still in all his gear, including a full-face helmet, was forced to punch and kick the shit out of the rogue 'roo while at the same time telling it in no uncertain terms (through his full-face) to piss off! It seems that the 'roo would not take the hint at first, but then backed off and started jumping up and down on Don's canopy in an attempt to kill that! Eventually the 'roo gave it away and was last seen peering out at Don from behind a nearby blackboy! All this was witnessed by a family who had pulled up nearby and could not believe what was going on! Don then asked them for a lift to join the rest of us on the beach! Needless to say it became the story of the week-end and the source of a huge number of 'Roo' jokes during a great dinner at the Commercial Hotel that night! End result is that Don Biggins is now known as 'Kanga-Don' !!! AJ

JUST LIKE to thank everyone involved in the 8 way comp on Saturday. As a member of Full Throttle I'd especially like to thank all the people who helped us with coaching - GT, Ebone, Mossy and some last minute tweaking by Jeremy. Thanks also to the camera people who made us look good. We had a heap of people stand in for missing members over the months and in our last practice we even had Johnno and Stots from another team. That’s what I call sportmanship. I'm so impressed that Skydive Express can get together two teams that can do 8-10 point 8 ways, not to mention Klowns R US who get and A+ for effort. Judging of the comp in the bar was a brave decision, not to mention a nail biting experience. A great start to the Xmas party. Spud (Klowns r us say a big thanks to everyone involved especially Murf and Cookie for their great coaching, we had a ball and hope to aspire to the heights of handbrake and full throttle one day. : ) What a great day. Cheers, Darrell and fellow Klowns)

Be coachable! LAST YEAR Skydive Express put on free slots for people willing to take on and coach 4 way teams. GT took on Amelia Ray and myself, we had an absolute ball and learned a huge amount. I would urge anyone who has the opportunity to learn from experienced skydivers in this way to jump at the chance. Being "coachable" is another big thing, even if you think you know something and you are shown a different way, have an open mind and give it a shot, this can be the difference between learning or stagnating. Thankyou to Skydive Express for the free slots, GT, Ebone, Lee, Lisa and Mossy for their coaching, Lisa, Andy, Dawn, Crispy and Julian for their great camera work and anyone else who helped out or filled in for us, also thanks to Endorphin for their rivalry all year and congratulations to them for taking out the state meet, it was fun. Darrell Barrett (Vertical Slipstream)

FOURTH PERSON to join our 4 way intermediate team as our coach has abandoned us. (maybe he is trying to tell us something?) We are Ray, Amelia and Darrell, our coach was GT but he don’t love us no more. We are hoping to do in the region of 100 team jumps between now and the state meet and would like to do the web league in the mean time but we will have a team meeting to discuss it all, jump numbers are not a problem as we all have under 500 jumps, y ou can get my email from skydive express. To those of you that witnessed me "falling" into the pool at around midnight on Saturday complete with phone in pocket, IT LIVES, Yay!! Got to hand it to Grunter though, his timing was perfect with the push!! Darrell ps GT was a fantastic coach (no, really!)

I've just heard that the speed limit on Great Eastern Highway up to Mundaring has dropped by 10km/hr so watch out.

Entries in the Open/Comedy should be entertaining. Entries to be submitted via DV tape as well as VHS copy by 1st Apr 2004.

Resolve ...

WA left out

PLANNING your skydiving year? Here's five little thought starters. 1) I resolve to send something to Australian Skydiving Magazine. We are blessed in having a large, colour, national publication to showcase our sport. It takes more than the efforts of the regular few to make it special: it takes YOU. Send in that photo; write that little story; place an ad. Whatever. But make a contribution, small or large. 2) I resolve to go to the Nationals. The Nationals are at Corowa this month, the location and timing set largely as a result of feedback provided. We've all boogied over Christmas, and have a couple of weeks to reduce that Christmas BBQ induced wing loading and do it all again. Come along, camp out, support your team, and make it the event it deserves to be. 3) I resolve to enter the video competition. What is with this? It's nearly impossible to get on a load where there isn't a camera these days - and skydiving is a spectacular visual smorgasboard. Then you've got things happening on the ground - dropzones are interesting places to be. And don't get me started on individual creativity. Why, then, so few entries for the video competition? Get off your butt, produce something, and send it in. You don't have to send in a competition winner to make the competition itself a success. 4) I resolve to send a jump ticket Kath Hoffman's way. http://www.skysurfer. com.au/Kath/ If it were you, she would have already send a ticket in for you. 5) I resolve to always think very hard about that last turn before I land. If you make every landing a good one, then one day you will become a legend. If you don't. Wherever you are, I hope I get to be on a load with you this year have a great one :-) Luke Oliver

YOU KNOW it was so exciting to receive my SKYDIVE 2004 Calendar in the ASM today until I realised that there were no events listed from dropzones in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, ACT & Tasmania! With exception of the APF/Vic League & the Nationals. Fair enough it's a small calendar and there's not enough room to fit every event on there, but just a few days ago I received the APF Register of Events which included many great events! Some of these include the Royal Sky Celebration 2004, Thailand; Canopy Flying Seminar, Nagambie; Labour Day POPS Meet, Nagambie; ABCs Camps, Nagambie; Easter Big Way Boogie, Nagambie; Instructor D Course, Nagambie; Swedish Hercules Boogie; World Championships in Artistic Events, Brazil; World Championship (Formation Skydiving, Canopy Formation, Style & Accuracy), Croatia & the ABCs Camp, Nagambie. - Great events that all Australian skydivers should know about! I'm sure there are heaps of events happening at dropzones all around this country so let's send them in to the ASM, get 'em printed and encourage those up and coming stars to be a part of skydiving in every part of Australia! ASM is appropriately named the "Australian Skydiver's Magazine" - so let's get in it!!

4-way Seminars at York! This is a regular thing and happens on each weekend AFTER the first Tuesday in each month Detailed brief and debrief. We will look at engineering, exits, blocks, etc. We plan to finish with a big way at the end of the day. Video on all jumps. Just let me know you’re coming and you will be slotted into a group Mossy

Wing suit jumping INTERESTED in wing suit jumping? The requirements are 500 jumps and a strong heart (after the sky show we thought a few would be interested). Russ Thornton will be on hand to help out and go through the finer points (he can even measure you up for your brand new Wing suit). The first day will be the 21 March 2004, with more dates planned. Total Control News TOTAL CONTROL is now a Performance Designs Dealer. Performance Designs' Katana is a high-performance canopy designed for experienced canopy pilots. The Katana has been described as “a perfect fit between the Stiletto and Velocity,” and a canopy that is “very suited to modern flying styles.” Like the PD Stiletto, the Katana is a highly tapered or “elliptical” nine-cell canopy made from zero-porosity fabric. Both the Stiletto and the Katana were designed using a conventional cell structure, without cross-braces or airlocks™ . The Katana may look similar to a Stiletto at first glance, but beneath the surface they are two completely different machines. The Katana is very easy to control using front risers. The front riser pressure starts off very light, and tends to build up slowly. It is easy to keep the Katana in a front riser dive or diving turn, and to make adjustments to your turn rate and rate of descent while diving. By comparison, the Stiletto's front riser pressure starts out noticeably higher and builds up more quickly. For details contact Total Control on 93771919 or 0438-887733. “……I love the way the Katana dives. It's easier to control all the way through a front riser approach, and feels a lot smoother to me than the Stiletto…..” “……It's geared towards a pilot who enjoys a responsive canopy that has the characteristics of an ‘elliptical' wing. The turning characteristics, spirals, lowspeed lift, and other characteristics associated with an ‘elliptical' wing are all there and all very refined…...”

Busy jumping I’VE BEEN busy lately. In the past few months I've qualified for my B and C licences. (I didn't get around to sending in my B application, so I did them both at the same time). Most of the jumps were at Busselton, with a handful at York, Dale and Hillman. I also did about 30 at Ramblers at their October LCC. I got my Display D (#3427) as well, I thought I might as well get it. Finally did my written exam for my Packer B (#1594). I did the last jump for my Starcrest at York on the weekend. The other jumps were done at Dale and Ramblers. I'm sending off my card tomorrow. Matthew Rowles

Thai jumping I’M GOING to Thailand on March 4 for the Exotic Sky Adventures Boogie. Wondering firstly if you, {or anyone you know} are going, and secondly if you are going to do the package. The deal is $1400 usd which includes $250 rego, 15 jumps at $25 each and accommodation and breakfast for 2 weeks and a couple of tours. Jumping is on March 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 19 and the rest are days off etc. Gotta admit, I’m not that keen on package deals and I reckon that if anyone is like minded, we could get a group of 3 or so, pay the rego and jumps and then look after our own accommodation and be way in front and not be tied down to a set itinerary and get to see a bit of Thailand as well. Any takers? Mick

Obviously in good working order, has light scratchings on the face from use as expected. Currently selling for $173 USD new, which is about $225 AUD. Make us an offer if you are interested, all reasonable offers considered. Happy to post at buyers expense. Seeya Brooke

Hi Everyone For those who don't already know Tracey is expecting our first child a little boy due on the 11th Jan so we are in full swing getting ready and both really looking forward to the change in life. We are having the baby here in Dubai at the American hospital and I am lucky to have the whole of Jan on leave so I will be around for the big day and weeks to follow. Christmas and New Years Eve for us will be with our neighbors a couple from Zim/Russia and NZ/UK a small gathering with friends. My work is still varied all the time, the job in Beijing was extremely challenging but involved extended periods apart from Tracey due to SARS and the general state of the Beijing health system meant that it was not good for her to be there pregnant and all. We did manage to slip in a few small holidays to North Qld and Mauritius though which was good. Now that the weather has cooled down here in Dubai there seems to be less flying which has meant a good break at home so far with the occasional trip away for stocking up on supplies. 2004 brings more travel for us both to San Fran for a month or so, training for myself and holidays for Tracey and the little fellow, plus our bi annual trip to Frankfurt at the end of the year for even more training ,and of course everything is subject to change. Tom and Tracey
