From the Acting Principal........ Hello Friends , It is certainly the time of the year when we have our feet still firmly planted in 2015 and life is full planning for end of year celebrations and achievements. At this time of the year though, we also begin looking at 2016 and begin planning, discussing and for the year ahead. Our staff room white board is beginning to attract dates for the year ahead already. This gives me a reminder, as I mentioned last week to, “be in the moment” and remember the blessings that I have in my life, right now. Monday this week saw us celebrate the beginning of Mission week with a beautiful liturgy under the veranda. Fr Carroll celebrated liturgy with us and he blessed our crosses that you can see in the classrooms around the school. Our students also received a special blessing as we strive to, “Live less and Give more”. The shared flat bread lunch Wednesday was a special occasion, where students once again, were encouraged to give thought and feeling towards those people in our society and world who are less fortunate than ourselves. We look forward to our splash of Red day tomorrow. Please see the ‘REC News’ section of the newsletter for more details. Nude Food at Star of the Sea School Every piece of packaging or excess food that we can save from landfill makes a difference. I encourage you when planning lunches for the school day, to help us minimise food and packaging waste by packing a waste-less lunch. The diagram below contains some ideas. Let’s make our food, nude! Remember to visit

St Vincent De Paul Bins You may have noticed that St Vincent De Paul bins have been placed around the school. The collection bins will be here for approximately a week. Now is a great time to donate any clothing to this fantastic charity. Parents in Education week In last week’s newsletter in the Parents and Friends section you would have noticed the Parent in Education Week advert. Please visit: www.decd.sa.gov.au/parentsineducation for the remaining engaging workshops on offer this week. Thank you to our amazing parents here at school for the fabulous work you all do. School Fees 2015 School Fees statements will be sent out in the next fortnight. If you are making regular payments from either a bank account or credit card please ensure your payments are sufficient to cover any additional fees. Otherwise you will need to make additional payments to cover these fees via Bpay or payment to the School Office as they fall due. This will ensure your school fee account is cleared by the end of the year. It is the School’s responsibility to ensure all fees are collected in a timely manner so I would appreciate all school fees outstanding to be cleared by the end of the year unless there is a prior agreed arrangement in place. Just a reminder: Parents/Caregivers who have contributed $140 or more to the Planned Giving Programme of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Henley Beach for the 2015 calendar year may apply for a full rebate of the School Capital Levy and/or the Diocesan Capital Levy. Application forms are available from the School Office. You will need to take the form to the Parish Office for approval. Families (other than those already eligible for School Card concessions) whose combined income for the 2013/2014 financial year was less than $50,000 may apply for a partial tuition fee rebate. If applicable, please contact me at the school office for an application form. If at any time you are experiencing difficulties paying your school fees, or have any queries, please contact me on 8115 7400 to confidentially discuss the matter. Jane Leonard Finance Manager

Board Talk The School Board met on Monday night in the MDC. It was lovely to have Fr John join us again after having missed a couple of meetings due to his illness. He told us about how the Parish is sponsoring a number of its Antioch members to attend World Youth Day (WYD) in Krakow next year; WYD was an initiative of Pope John Paul II to celebrate youth and hope. In addition to being a youth group, Antioch provide and support our young ones with efforts such as running the Year 6-9 Parish Youth Disco each term, assisting with the Liturgy of the Word for Children at 9:30am Masses and organising monthly Youth Masses. Those making the pilgrimage to Poland are holding a number of events to also raise money for their trip the next of which is a family day on 1 November. Kim Martin attended the Board meeting with a number of ICT ‘toy’s which we had much fun with, and mixed success operating. Star of the Sea is extremely fortunate to have Kim, an Apple Distinguished Education Institute leader inspiring learning in digital technology across our school. A report released by the Foundation for Young Australians in August 2015 identified that over the next 10 to 15 years more than 50% of jobs will require significant digital skills. Star of the Sea is committed to developing a modern and relevant learning culture and children who are questioning, creative, empowered problem solvers. The ICT inventions we played with such as robots and devices that create music via fruit, lollies and play doh, are examples of our future and the technological direction the Board has committed to financially investing in, in order to optimise our children’s future success. Andrew McEgan elaborated on the P&F’s “Aloha 2016” event which will be held on the school oval in early February. A parent only function with band and BYO everything to enable people to attend, mix and relax. It will be a wonderful opportunity to reacquaint with old friends and make some new ones. It will certainly be a wonderful welcome for new families to the school. With some surprise I note we will be holding our last Board meeting for the year next month. Star of the Sea has enjoyed another highly successful year against every measure. At the November meeting the Board will formally review 2015 achievements against the Strategic Plan and look towards a rosy 2016. Kind Regards Christine Henderson School Board Chair

Gospel Reflection:

Mark 10:46-52 Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stood still and said, "Call him here." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you." So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again." Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

RE NEWS Mission Week We have had such a wonderful response from the students thus far in relation to Mission Week. Tomorrow officially concludes our week with our Founder’s Day Mass and visit from Fr Adrian Meaney msc. The generosity of families with monetary donations, clothing for St Vinnies and cans of food has been overwhelming. Thank you for showing your support. Just as important though is the awareness this week has raised in relation to the themes outlined in last week’s newsletter: Food, Clothing, Shelter, Water, Environment and Love and Belonging. The water station activities on Monday highlighted the lack of quality water supplies in many nations and the lengths some people have to go to access to their water supply. The visit and inspiring talk from Anne Haren was a highlight for our classes. She spoke personally about her experiences with assisting refugees settle into Adelaide. Her tireless work of ensuring these new families are supported and the everyday challenges they face really inspired our young people to ask some thought provoking questions. Our older students, in particular, were moved by her stories and are now seeking ways in which they can make a difference. I hope you were able to engage in a conversation about her visit with you child(ren). The staff and Year 5 classes also had the opportunity to listen to Peter Hoskin’s son, Alex, speak to us about his recent peace keeping mission in Afghanistan. Another exemplary example of servantship!

Catholic Social Teaching What is it? Catholic Social Teaching covers all spheres of life – the economic, political, personal and spiritual - with human dignity at its centre. It is the body of doctrine developed by the Catholic Church on matters of social justice. Its foundations have been considered to have been laid down by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 but has since been traced to writings of St Thomas Aquinas and St Augustine. The seven themes have tried to find an equilibrium between the concern for the whole society, especially the weakest and poorest and respect for human liberty. Over the years Catholic Social Teaching has been consistent in critiquing modern social/ political ideologies both on the left and right. This week, classes have explored these themes in depth and related it to our Mission Week learning.     

HUMAN DIGNITY – Everyone is special. COMMON GOOD – What is best for everyone? SOLIDARITY – We are all one big family. SUBSIDIARITY – People should have a say. PARTICIPATION – We all want to work and contribute to our community.  STEWARDSHIP – We all need to care for the Earth.  PREFERENTIAL OPTIONS FOR THE POOR – Some people need tra help.

Antioch ALL SAINTS DAY FAMILY FUN – Sunday 1st November On the 1st November all families are invited to celebrate All Saints Day at the parish. Our Antioch Youth Group are organising a fundraiser to help send some young people from our parish to World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow. There will be a prize for the best dressed! I encourage you to support this wonderful initiative! FOR THE HEART...... . A prayer of compassion from Mother Teresa Lord, open our eyes that we may see you in our brothers and sisters. Lord, open our ears that we may hear the cries of the hungry, the cold, the frightened, the oppressed. Lord, open our hearts that we may love each other as you love us. Renew in us your spirit. Lord, free us and make us one. Amen

Bethany, Lilah, Niamh, Emilia, Harry and Lauren were the 6 students who attended from Yr 7.
