Standard English Level 1 Instructor: Chris Sorochin *Prerequisite: Placement Test* Texts Required: NorthStar 3 Reading and Writing Third Edition Required: NorthStar 3 Listening and Speaking Third Edition

Course Description: Students in Mr. Sorochin’s Level 1 class will be introduced to basic vocabulary and expressions and become acquainted with the workings of English. Students will discover the sounds, vocabulary and structure of the language and how it all fits together to help them communicate. No previous knowledge of English will be assumed, but we will build on any prior experience. Goals: To develop basic practical spoken and written skills necessary to begin navigating a variety of everyday situations in English To develop the ability to begin utilizing basic verb forms To holistically unite inextricably linked American language and culture as students simultaneously absorb the rhythm and patterns of both. Requirements: In addition to following the rules and regulations outlined in the school catalog, students in Mr. Sorochin’s Level 1 Class must treat each other with respect. Hostile or derogatory comments directed at individuals or groups will not be tolerated. Constructive criticism and suggestions for class activities, subjects for class discussion and improvements in general are both encouraged and welcomed! Assignments/Exams: Each week students will be required to complete a writing assignment and an impromptu speaking exercise.



The writing assignments will each be 15 points and the impromptu speaking will be 20. The writing assignment will be given on Monday of each week and will be due each Friday. Impromptu speaking will be done throughout the week so be sure to come to class and come on time! If you don’t do an impromptu speaking exercise you will get a zero for that week. If you need to miss class, make sure you make arrangements to do the speaking exercise beforehand.



An exam is given on the third Wednesday of every month.

They will add to their grammar skills, using various grammatical forms in writing and conversation. We’ll focus on putting students’ advanced command of English in to practice on more sophisticated modes of cultural analysis and expression. Goals: To gain greater fluency, greater accuracy and the ability to utilize more extensive vocabulary and idiomatic language in spoken and written English.
