School Charter is self-policed by the children themselves and you can often hear them reminding one another of what is acceptable behaviour and what isn't.” “Children are empowered to tackle issues and speak up if something is wrong. Above all, children at this school know that they will be listened to and that their opinions count. That's very powerful.” “As an external agency working in many other schools, ALL of my staff have commented on how well behaved castle hill infant children are.” 2

Stakeholder Survey November 2015 “There is a good system of reward in place” “Our child is showing in her behaviour at home that she is being taught about respecting the rules and respecting others” “All children I see are well behaved” “Teachers are happy to discuss concerns with parents so if a problem arises it gets nipped in the bud” The response which disagreed did not leave any comment for the school to follow up.

Feedback in diary is always positive. It would be good to know what steps/difficult areas to work on” (see summary) “At parent interviews yes but if there are changes in between then not really” (see summary)

Question 15: Parents only: We have worked hard to improve communication/feedback in homework diaries /more regular updates on areas your child needs to work on/ more guidance in ways you can help your child: Have we got the level of communication right? 56 responses: 50 agree - 89.3% agree, 4 not sure, 1 disagree Comments: “Would like to see a bit more feedback in homework diary on areas that need more attention” (see summary) “Although I would like to see more updates and comments in homework diaries if possible” (see summary) “Suggestion of a completion date in the Letters writing book” (see summary) “Homework diary is not updated by teacher/teaching assistant each week” (see summary) “I think this is an area of improvement. She is very enthusiastic to learn and she is confident to try new activities for the first time” “Her attitude and home” “Knowing more about (child’s name)'s progression through homework diary. (Child’s name) seems to be more confident gradually so far with her new teacher. I think individual focusing with her has also helped” “Yes. Teaching staff understand and are very knowledgeable of each child's ability and support/challenge accordingly” “My child can now blend (sounds). My child can now write his name.” “We have been given advice on how to further support our son's reading, which has since improved Sadly the first 2 years at school (child’s name) did not have a teacher solidly through the years. Teachers had left and fallen ill (through no fault of the school). However, this did not affect her education and it was handled well by the school” “Our child has received ELSA sessions and we have noticed that our child has been using the methods at home that she has learnt. Thank you.” “My child has improved in spellings because of communications from the teacher”

Question 17: Can you identify anything which has got worse for you or your child during this year at school because of something we have done? 21 responded “no, nothing” Comments: “Although not strictly a school policy, rather a government policy, we feel that compulsory school meals are not healthier than a lunch we would provide; they contain more white flour foodstuffs and higher sat fat content than we would include in a packed lunch of wholemeal sandwiches, fruit and yoghurt. We do recognise that for some children, these meals are an improvement. That said, the supply of fruit snacks is a good initiative.” (see summary) “Worse for me is the school budget, but that is not because of anything the school has done!!” “Feel EY writing programme is too intense for a 4 year old” (see summary) The increase of "seating" times compared to Yr R seems to generate hyperactivity in the evening! (see summary)

Question 18: What do you think of the new website? Has it improved? Can you tell us which bits you find most useful/ use or look at the most? Comments: “Well signposted and concise.” “Having policies available to reference out of ours if needed” “The new website is outstanding - clear, engaging attractive, easy to navigate” “I love it. But then I am biased !! It has improved and evolves all the time, its very easy to maintain and I have to endorse the designers, E4Education, for their excellent support.” “Great website and easy to use. Pupil area particularly good to allow parents to see what the children are doing during the year.” “A search facility would be useful.” (see summary) “Like the new graphics on it.” 6

Diary dates is key information” (see summary) “’What's on’ during the week” “The new website is very easy to understand”

Question 19: We continue to employ a Sports Coach to work with children which has increased their physical activity and participation in sports in school. We are interested to understand if this is reflected at home: Have you noticed any increase in confidence, particularly in physical abilities or willingness to undertake physical activity? Comments: “To be fair, we encourage physical activity anyway, so have not seen any measurable increase.” “(Governors) are doing a follow up Visit Report on this shortly so I hope we can capture some feedback here about this!” (see summary) “The specialist coaching enables the children to make quicker progress.” “Yes - children very keen and the coaches professional” “Haven't noticed a change as our child was always keen to take part in physical activities, but agree it is a good thing to have the sports coach” “Great feedback-always talking about 'Coach Charlotte'” “Yes!” “No improvement as such as my child is very physical anyway but we would welcome more sport/physical activity during the week” “Willing to take part in running races and keen (short distances!) overall development from being at school” “More running and jumping around” “Yes keen to play more football with daddy outside” “Yes-shows gymnastic moves at home” “Hard to say as our daughter has always been extremely active physically” “Always been quite active so just continuing existing levels” 7

She enjoys sports and activities at all times so haven't noticed much difference” “Our child is active anyway so we haven't seen any marked difference really” “Yes” “My child is confident by nature, but she is very keen and keeps talking about PE at home. So all is great” “They quickly volunteer to take part in physical activities. And are also very suggestible”

Any other comments? “ It is a pleasure to be a member of the school team and I enjoy working here” “We always book holidays to coincide with half term holidays, Easter etc however, projects are often given to the children to complete during these breaks and can be difficult to work on while away. Perhaps some could be carried out in term time?” (see summary) “Really impressed with everything so far” “Keep up the good work” “We have found the transition into Yr R smooth and supportive. Thank you to all staff for this. We look forward to being part of the school over the next few years.” “Thank you for all your hard work!” “Thank you for making the transition to school so smooth! Well done EVERYONE It is a team effort” “We are very pleased with the school.” “We are very happy with everything the school does. Thank you!” “Thanks very much for all your support throughout the school year.”

Summary: Question: 3: The school successfully meets the different needs of individual pupils

Response: The response which disagreed stated: “Some of the homework set is for the average and above able children and therefore too difficult for some of the children” 8

Action: We try hard to provide stimulating and challenging homework for children which we hope parents will engage with: if you feel any set homework is too difficult for your child, please come and talk to us

Stakeholder Survey November 2015 7: The school deals with all incidents of disruptive behaviour, including bullying, on an individual basis and tries to resolve each issue in partnership with parents, pupils and staff

about the difficulties and we will try our best to find a solution Staff have told us that they really like having a well defined behaviour policy that can be consistently applied – it helps maintain high standards of good behaviour amongst the children. Of course, there may well be isolated reasons why we would apply some compassion about the application of the behaviour policy, for example if a child has exceptional personal circumstances, but on the whole it is one set of rules for all – including adults! We completely agree! We value children’s individuality and their unique abilities, these are the building blocks for all their progress at school. We would hope that if there is a particular problem which has not been resolved satisfactorily, please come and talk to us and we will try our best to find a solution After some similar feedback last year, we have tried this year to run some events in the early evenings, such as the Fashion Show and Quiz Night, as well as the School Summer Fayre which we hold annually on Saturday. After work activities are hard to schedule to suit everyone as some parents do not finish work until 6.00pm and some of our young children are having dinner/bath and bed routines around that time – any suggestions are welcome. We have thought about videoing performances and providing them on a CD for parents who could not make the times, but to do this we would have to factor in the additional cost of the licensing agreement which would make the CD’s costly. We will look to providing some additional information and guidelines on homework expectations which we can add to the webpage under Parents Area,

homework but was able to ask to find out. Some written guidance on this would help.” The response which disagreed stated: “We would like to be advised of any interventions put into place so that we can support these at home”

13: Do you receive all the information you need from teachers in order to support learning?

“It would be good to have worked examples of the way you teach so that we as parents can do the same method at home”

14: Do staff clearly explain your child’s progress?

“Parents evenings are great. Feedback in diary is always positive. It would be good to know what steps/difficult areas to work on” “At parent interviews yes but if there are changes in between then not really”

15: We have worked hard to improve communication/feedba ck in homework diaries /more regular updates on areas your child needs to work on/ more guidance in ways you can help your child: Have we got the level of communication right?

“Would like to see a bit more feedback in homework diary on areas that need more attention” “Although I would like to see more updates and comments in homework diaries if possible” “Homework diary is not updated by teacher/teaching assistant each week” “I think this is an area of improvement. We definitely appreciate more feedback in the diaries” 10

Helping Your Child, Helping With Homework. We can also ensure we signpost better to this area in the Early Years Parent’s Pack. Routine interventions to support learning at school are actioned on a regular basis – we would not necessarily inform parents of these unless we felt the child was not progressing. It is fantastic that you are keen to support these at home – a testament to the excellent parent partnership at this school. Teachers will send home a ‘Personal Learning Plan’ which details any planned interventions children are having in school – this will begin at the March Parents Evenings. We provide some information and guidelines on helping your child including examples of how we teach, for example, there are videos and audio clips of how we teach handwriting, reading, phonics, spelling and maths. Take a look at our webpage under Parents Area, Helping Your Child. Please let us know if you need more detail. See previous action under Q12 – we can use pupil diaries to help parents with areas to work on, especially between Parents Evenings.

See previous action under Q14 – better use of feedback Pupil diaries. All teachers will discuss this at the staff meeting after Spring half term and address with parents at the March Parents evenings.

Stakeholder Survey November 2015 “It is nice to see a weekly comment in the homework diaries. We did get some helpful information at the parent interview but not sure we would get that in between times?” “On occasion we feel there isn't strong enough communication and find ourselves asking parents or popping into reception to confirm details we are unsure of” “Suggestion of a completion date in the Letters writing book”

17: Can you identify anything which has got worse for you or your child during this year at school because of something we have done?

“Although not strictly a school policy, rather a government policy, we feel that compulsory school meals are not healthier than a lunch we would provide; they contain more white flour foodstuffs and higher sat fat content than we would include in a packed lunch of wholemeal sandwiches, fruit and yoghurt. We do recognise that for some children, these meals are an improvement. That said, the supply of fruit snacks is a good initiative.”

11

We do not specify a completion date as children in early years are all unique and at different stages of readiness to learn. Please talk to the Early Years team to discuss a completion date for your individual child. The “Universal Free School Meals” incentive was indeed a Government Policy which necessitated some considerable change at school. Much thought was put into the implementation of this at CHIS, we involved the children as much as possible, we sought their opinions and listened to their initial concerns. A small group of children were invited to talk about our school dinners and our experiences at the Young People and Children’s Conference in Winchester in May 2015. We were the only infant school at the conference and the children presented to an audience of over 140 people. Ian Wright (Hampshire School’s Healthy School Coordinator) commended our school on our achievements with school lunches and we have had visits from other schools to see how we do it. Glyn Wright, County Inspector/Advisor Personal Development Learning (PDL) HIAS, Education and Inclusion, said: “Thank you so much for bringing your team from Castle Hill Infants today. What a stunning opening to the day. All delegates were blown away by the confidence of your young people. Please pass on our thanks to every young person and member of staff. What a great example you are to other schools.” Councillor Peter Edgar, Executive Member for Education HCC, said:

Stakeholder Survey November 2015 “Please would you thank all the children and staff who were involved in the presentation on school dinners to the Children and Young People Conference yesterday. This must have been a challenging and daunting experience for the children involved, especially when they were the first to take part. The children made an outstandingly useful contribution to the conference and they spoke clearly and with confidence. The audience could hear and understand every word. They were a great credit to Castle Hill Infant School. Once again, my sincere thanks to the children and staff who worked so hard to prepare and deliver this excellent presentation on the value of Universal Free School Meals.” “Feel EY writing programme is too intense for a 4 year old” “The increase of "seating" times compared to Yr R seems to generate hyperactivity in the evening!”

18: What do you think of the new website? Has it improved? Can you tell us which bits you find most useful/ use or look at the most?

“A search facility would be useful.”

“Still not clear to me where I should go to find certain pieces of information e.g. curriculum should this be clear on the front page?”

12

See comments in reply to question 15 re Early Years readiness to learn. The “step up” to Year 1 involves not only a change in learning style and pace but also the introduction of a different type of daily “learning structure” which is essential to each child so they can gradually learn to cope with the structured school day for the future. Inevitably this involves a bit less “free flow” than they experience in Early Years and a bit more listening and focussed working – we hope they gradually learn to burn off their excess energy at breaks and at lunchtimes rather than in the evenings, but of course the transition is different for every child. At the inception of the website we eventually decided against the search facility as too often it took you to the wrong piece of information, and also did not encourage exploration of the site! If you click “sitemap” (top left hand side of the home page) this brings up an overview of everything on the site, which I hope is helpful. We are in negotiations with the website designer to try to link Curriculum from the home page – watch that signpost at the bottom of the home page....

Stakeholder Survey November 2015 “Previously there was a full year diary which helped plan holidays but now only a term at a time” “Not user friendly on mobile devices/old version better”

“Great. All areas need to be checked regularly e.g staff is listed in various places and differs. Diary dates is key information” “(Governors) are doing a follow up Visit Report on this shortly so I hope we can capture some feedback here about this!”

19: We continue to employ a Sports Coach to work with children which has increased their physical activity and participation in sports in school. We are interested to understand if this is reflected at home: Have you noticed any increase in confidence, particularly in physical abilities or willingness to undertake physical activity? Any other comments? “We always book holidays to

coincide with half term holidays, Easter etc however, projects are often given to the children to complete during these breaks and can be difficult to work on while away. Perhaps some could be carried out in term time?”

13

We will add the Annual Diary dates to the existing dates page We have worked with the website designers to ensure the best experience on mobile devices – for any specific display problems please bring your device into the school office and we will contact them directly to ensure we find a solution It has been noted that the staff list needed updating – thanks for the eagle eyes! Thank you for the comprehensive feedback on this question – we will use some of your very useful comments in the Governors Report on the Impact of PE Funding and the use of External Sports Coaching.

We completely agree – and we really appreciate everyone’s efforts to avoid taking holidays in term time. The teaching team will make sure that time is given for home learning projects either side of school holidays.
