Outcomes MS1.5 - Compares the duration of events using informal methods and reads clocks on the half-hour WMS1.3 - Describes mathematical situations and methods using everyday and some mathematical language, actions, materials, diagrams and symbols

Prior Learning Students have associated everyday events with particular hour and half-hour times, and described the position of the hands on a clock. They are familiar with the terms ‘o’clock’ and ‘half-past’, and with analog and digital clocks.

Description of Activity Students draw a picture of an activity at a particular time of day and record this using analog and digital time. 1. Students draw a picture of an activity they enjoy doing at school, at home or in the community. 2. Students show the time the activity might take place using both an analog clock and a digital clock. 3. Students select three events during the day and show the time on both analog and digital clocks. At least one event should be on "half-past".

Resources Paper, pencils.

Assessment Criteria

E MS1.5

 Can identify important times of the day but cannot represent the time in digital or analog form.

WMS1.3  Needs significant teacher support to discuss when a variety of activities occur throughout the day.

Teacher Observations:

D  Can record the time on the hour in digital or analog form.

 Attempts to record

C  Accurately displays time on the hour and half hour in analog and digital form.

assistance can identify some important real life activities and talk about the time they occur.

 Accurately displays time on the hour and half hour in analog and digital form.

 Accurately displays

time on the half hour in digital or analog form.

 With some teacher

B

the time on the quarter hour in analog and digital form.

 Links mathematical ideas to everyday events.

 All three activities have been ordered and matched to an appropriate time of the day.

A  Accurately displays the time on analog and digital clocks in five or ten minute intervals.

 Demonstrates an understanding of 24 hour time .

 Uses explicit mathematical language to correctly link times to real life activities.

Task: 1. Draw and label pictures of three (3) activities you do during the day. 2. Write the time that each activity takes place using a digital and analog clock. 3. Be sure to include a ‘half past’ time.

Step 1: Read the question. Step 2: What is it asking you to do?

Step 3: What are you going to do to find the answer?

Step 4: Try to do the question and tell me what you are doing. Step 5: Write down any extra information.

Step 6: Does your answer make sense?

Student Work Sample (D)

Bailey has demonstrated the ability to record digital time but only a limited level of competence in representing analog time. Three events have been pictorially represented and labelled. A basic understanding of the equivalence between analog and digital time has been shown but no reference to half-hour time has been made. Explicit scaffolds and teacher guidance would be required for Bailey to become more accurate. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard at the end of Stage 1.

Student Work Sample (C)

Lindsay has demonstrated sound knowledge and understanding of digital and analog time. The analog and digital clock faces have been correctly drawn but there are some errors in the analog time displays. Lindsay has attempted to include half-hour and ten minute intervals to demonstrate higher knowledge and skills. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard at the end of Stage 1.

Student Work Sample (B)

Chris has accurately matched analog and digital time using correct hand and numeral placement. The written comment shows an understanding of the passing of time but there is some confusion over logical sequence and setting out. Chris has applied mathematical information to a real life situation and demonstrated the ability to add on time, but only two activities have been included. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard at the end of Stage 1.

Student Work Sample (A)

Casey has demonstrated extensive knowledge and understanding of analog and digital time on the hour, half-hour and beyond. Three activities have been matched to an appropriate time of day, showing a very high level of competence in transferring mathematical concepts to real-life situations. Although am or pm has not been indicated, digital and analog times have been accurately matched and precisely recorded using correct placement, size and shape of numerals and hands on the clock faces. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 1.

Student Work Sample (A)

Courtney has demonstrated an extensive understanding of 24-hour time through the accurate matching of analog and digital time using correct placement of numerals and hands on the clock faces. Three activities have been matched to an appropriate time of day showing a very high level of competence in applying mathematical concepts to real-life situations. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 1.
