Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 21, 2018 The readings for January 28 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Reading II: 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Gospel: Mark 1:21-28 The most important question Mark’s Gospel asks is, “Who is Jesus?” Jesus speaks with authority and people were stunned with the knowledge of the Scriptures Jesus displayed. Beyond this, his very presence changes situations. When he drives out the evil spirit, the crowd doesn’t understand when the shrieking demon calls him by name — “the holy one of God.” They discuss the power over evil and go out to spread the news throughout all of Galilee, but they keep asking, “Who is he?” For them and for us, it’s more important to let the holy presence and authority of Jesus into the situations of our lives and of our world than to look for verbal answers and definitions of who Jesus is. Question of the Week Has there been a time when someone’s presence brought change in your life? Was it negative or positive. Have you experienced a time when God might have been working to overcome an evil situation?

From the Pastor’s Desk . . . Men’s Prayer Breakfast

Matt Birk's appearance at the Men's Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, January 13, was enjoyed by a “sold out” audience of over 250 parishioners and their guests. Matt's personal reflections on his noteworthy football career were intertwined with the important role his faith has played throughout his life. Matt began his remarks with a quote from Mother Teresa, “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” Matt spoke of the influence his parents played in raising him as a boy in St. Paul. His path through Cretin Derham Hall High School and Harvard led him to be drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. Matt shared his battles to make the team and eventually become an All-Pro. His years as a Viking and later as a Baltimore Raven were influenced by teammates like John Randle, and coaches like John Harbaugh. His commitment to faith was strengthened by his wife, Adrianna, and their decision to raise their family of eight here in Minnesota. The audience was lifted by Matt's commitment to the Catholic Church, his humility and his belief that a parent's role is invaluable to a child . . . for a lifetime. He also talked about prayer, telling a story of finding a coach on his knees one early morning. Upon asking him why, he told Matt “life brings us to our knees, so why not start the day there?” I hope that everyone in attendance found Matt as inspiring as I did! And, I do want to take this opportunity to mention Mike Ramler, coor dinator for the event, committee member Bernie Mackell, and a host of volunteers for their hard work to make sure our annual event was another great success!

Prayer for Christian Unity

You might be interested in attending an event that is planned at the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, with the St. Paul Area Synod and the Minneapolis Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, that will bring the 500th Anniversary Commemorations of the Reformation to a close. At 7 p.m. tonight (Sunday, January 21), a joint Liturgy of Evening Prayer for Christian Unity tonight, Sunday, January 21, at 7 p.m., at the St. Paul Cathedral. Bishop Patricia Lull of the St. Paul Area Synod will preach, and Bishop Ann Svennungsen of the Minneapolis Area Synod and Archbishop Bernard Hebda will serve as Liturgists. All are welcome as we renew a common witness to Jesus Christ. A reception follows. The Reformation, a movement that led to a variety of Protestant Christian Churches, occurred for many reasons including social, political and economic causes — as well as religious causes and a frustration with church leaders who had become worldly and corrupt and with questionable Church practices such as the sale of indulgences. Fr. Bob There is Eucharistic Adoration every Thursday in the Historic Church beginning at 8:30 a.m. (after Daily Mass) and ending at 8 p.m. Seek the Lor d and know he patiently awaits you. Chaplet of Divine Mercy follows.

Marriage and Divorce: Insights into the Tradition A Saint John's School of Theology and Seminary Theology Day will explore how living out the sacrament of marriage has proven to be a challenge. The reasons for this vary, but oftentimes when such an occurrence takes place, many couples resort only to filing for a legal civil divorce to receive necessary legal protection. The church understands this need, yet at the same time, she too has her own way of handling the dissolution of the marriage sacrament — the annulment process. Either way, this kind of journey almost always involves feelings of hurt, regret, betrayal, and perhaps even a deep sense of disconnect with the Church and her teachings on marriage, divorce, and remarriage. Join us for a gracefilled conversation as we first explore the dimensions of the marriage sacrament and the purpose of the annulment process. This session also has a second aim, and that is, to name the real-life struggles that can exist within a marriage and why we need to rethink the way we think and speak about this sacrament. In addition, we will discern ways we as a church community can and should (better) walk alongside those experiencing marital stress and the impending reality of divorce. The event is Thursday, February 1 at St. Joseph the Worker in Maple Grove. Check-in is 6 to 6:30 p.m., presentation at 6:30 p.m. Free event. Registration is required: www.collegevilleMN.com/theologyday, 320-363-3560 or [email protected]. Light refreshments available. Closings If inclement weather should make it necessary to cancel an event at St. Victoria, including Faith Formation and Confirmation, the information will be sent via an all-parish email, be on the marquee in front of the church, appear as a “newsflash” on our website, www.stvictoria.net, and it will be announced on WCCO Radio and TV. If this occurs after regular business hours or during a weekend, office telephones most likely will not be answered. If you are scheduled to help with an event, donate food, etc., and there is bad weather (or for any other reason), please make sure you contact the coordinator of the event to make sure he or she is aware of any change in your plans. Thank you.
