¿Cómo amas a Jesucristo? ¿Cómo amas a tu pareja? ¿Cómo amas a tu madre y a tu padre? ¿Cómo amas a tus hijos? ¿Cómo amas a tu amigo? ¿Cómo amas a tu prójimo? ¿Cómo amas a ti mismo? April 10, 2016 Third Sunday Of Easter

St. Michael Church Newark, New York

Dear Parish Family, In this week’s Gospel from John, Jesus reveals himself to the disciples for the third time, after being raised from the dead. Jesus took time to light a fire in order to prepare breakfast for his disciples. Often, gospel stories talk about people preparing meals and serving them. Jesus seemed to say a lot through meals and at meals. He allowed a woman to dry his feet with her hair at a meal, one of his first meetings with people was a wedding meal, he sat and ate with sinners and tax collectors and then there is the Last Supper where Jesus gave himself to all of us in the bread and wine. This gospel reminds me how the act of cooking is an act of love. Jesus loved his disciples, and showed that love by cooking a simple breakfast of bread and fish. After Jesus’ death and resurrection comes the Spirit of Love. Love given, Love received, and Love shared. In cooking for people, love is active, even if others don’t see it as a sign of love. My mother always enjoyed having her family over on a Sunday for a meal. She would prepare everything herself, never wanting help with the cooking. She did this for us because she loved us and wanted to share and enjoy meals together. My mother came from a very poor family, so being able to provide to us, what she didn’t have as a child, was one of her greatest joys. I write this about my mom in the past tense because, after suffering a stroke during open heart surgery, she is no longer able to cook large meals for the family, it just takes too much energy and takes her several days to recover. So, now when we gather for family meals, we all pitch in and cook something to share in the meal together, a sign of love to each other. The breakfast meal with Jesus will end with questions about love and being sent on the mission of Jesus, simply put, “Follow me.” How do you follow Jesus on a daily basis? How do you share in a meal of love with others? Peace & love to all, June
