Newsletter - Term 2

Week 4

6th May 2016

RECEIVING OUR CONFIRMATION CERTIFICATES  To all in our community,    Our Confirma on ceremony of last Saturday evening  was very much a celebratory community gathering, with all the Parish coming together to support our Year Six children, as they par cipated in and received this final of our Church’s ini aon Sacraments.  Mass in the church at night, with the evening light fading and the presence of  candles, adds atmosphere and reflec ve meaning to the occasion, evoking the spirit of what  the Sacrament of Confirma on means.  As stated in the introduc on to the Mass, “We come together as children of God wan ng to look on the world as Jesus did through hearts full of love, compassion and service. Jesus shows us in his life that he lived justly. Do we live justly? Jesus shows us in his life that he lived compassionately. Do we live compassionately? We who are gathered here today are challenged, to live the Word of God.  We congratulate all the children, their sponsors and families who remained respec ul and reverent throughout the Mass  and we express our apprecia on to all who contributed to the evening being special for the  Year Six children, their sponsors and families. - Faye Nardella, - Cantor: Leonie Thomson, - Organist: Lillian Lee and our school choir of twenty-seven voices responded to the sense of the  Mass through music.  We thank the staff of St Mary’s for their willingness to assist with booklet  distribu on, as collectors and special minsters.  Par cularly, we express our gra tude to the  Year Six staff and the class teachers, Sharyn Greedy and Andrew Hook for their suppor ve presence and their encouragement of the children to see the importance of this Sacrament.  Finally,  we acknowledge Teresa Mercuri who in her role as Religious Educa on Leader calmly set everyone at ease through her a en on to thorough organisa on.  In conclusion, the school community is indebted to Bishop Cur n and Father Jus n, who through the mass “brought to life” the importance of the Sacrament of Confirma on.  Much of the week’s focus was on preparing for Mothers’ Day.  Stories were read, songs sung,  poems thought of and cards and all manner of art work created.  Despite the many changes in  today’s world one of the constants remains Mothers’ Day.  Thus as life ever changes, ever  evolves, the meaning of Mothers’ Day remains the same; - a day of celebra on, a day of tribute  to a special person whose influence on our life is everlas ng.  Mother’s Day is a story; it is a  story about an enduring rela onship.  Further support for the children to acknowledge their  Mothers was Wednesday’s Parent and Friends’ Stall, where gi s were sufficiently varied to  ensure each child’s gi  was individual.  Our thanks to the Parent and Friends.  And of course  today was the Mothers’ Day Luncheon, an annual event which is one of the highlights of the  St Mary’s social calendar.  What a celebra on; - a  me of sharing life’s stories, entertainment  and much laughter (Dot was in form!).  The community is very apprecia ve of “the team” for  providing an a ernoon where there was at least a moment’s break from being a Mother.  NAPLAN (Na onal Assessment Programme ‐ Literacy and Numeracy)  During next week  the children from Year Three and Five from St Mary’s will par cipate in the na onal tests in  Literacy and Numeracy.  NAPLAN is an annual na onal assessment for all students in Years 3, 5,  7, and 9.  All students in these year levels are expected to par cipate in tests in Reading,  Wri ng, Language Conven ons (spelling, grammar and punctua on) and Numeracy.  All government and non-government educa on authori es have contributed to the development of  NAPLAN materials.  NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and repor ng  process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each  student’s performance.  Since the introduc on of na onal literacy and numeracy tests in 2008  St Mary’s has been provided with consistent, comparable and transferable informa on on students’ literacy and numeracy performance. (see St Mary’s Annual Report to the Community).   h p://www.smascotvale.catholic.edu.au/leadership-and-management/school-compliancereports/school-compliance-report-2014.pdf  Best wishes for an enjoyable Mothers’ Day on Sunday   Take Care    Graham

FAMILY MATHS NIGHT

“Let the maths games begin!” Did you know that students whose parents are actively involved in their education do better at school? Do you sometimes feel daunted or overwhelmed when helping your children with Maths homework? Ever wondered how teachers cater for different levels in the classroom? Would you like to see how learning Maths can be fun for all the family?

If you answered ‘Yes!’ to any or all of these questions, or you just want to join in a community event, come along to our Olympic themed Family Maths Night on Wednesday 18th May at 6.45 p.m. sharp. Your example is the best motivator for your children. Maths is SO important to today’s students. We would love your whole family to come along and explore exciting classroom games and problem-solving activities which put into practice the concepts and skills covered in the Australian Curriculum. Challenge yourself and approach all tasks with a ‘growth mindset’ as you discover just how much fun maths can be. Don’t shy away because it’s cold or might be past bedtime. Feed and bath the children first, dress them up in trackies or PJs, and be a bit brave! There will be math games set up in the classrooms. The computer lab will be open so you can learn about Mathletics. As you tour the school and participate in the games, you will get game ideas and maths websites to try at home! As you circulate through the classrooms to play maths games, collect your gold stickers and attach them to your Mathlete Pass. At the end of the evening there will be a prize draw. If you are attending, please complete and return the reply slip attached to the Family Maths Night invitation that w ent home last w eek by Friday 6 th May. If you have any questions, please contact Nicola Toney & Vanessa Moreira (Mathematics Coordinators) [email protected] or [email protected]. 3

POINTS TO REMEMBER ABOUT THE DROP OFF PICK UP ZONE 









Drivers are only allowed to pick up passengers in the zone as long as they drive on quickly. You (or carers picking up children) are not allowed to sit in cars from 3.15 p.m. and wait for the children to walk out to the zone. You will be fined if you do this. Try and leave home so that you arrive when the children are out in the street. Please do not double park – it puts the children’s safety at risk Please inform everyone using the zone who is caring for your children. Local authorities will be policing the zone to ensure rules are being followed.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT SPHERE FOUNDATION ENROLMENTS FOR 2017 LAST FRIDAY, APPLICATION FOR FOUNDATION 2017 CLOSED. 





We received thirty two applicants from children who have siblings at St Mary’s. Thirty nine children who are non siblings, but living in the Parish of St Mary’s also submitted applications. Eight applications received were out of our Parish boundaries.

THERE WILL BE TWO CLASSES IN 2017 OF TWENTY SIX CHILDREN. AS SIBLINGS HAVE FIRST PREFERENCE, NINETEEN CHILDREN WHO DO NOT HAVE A SIBLING AT ST MARY’S WILL PRESENTLY NOT HAVE A PLACE IN FOUNDATION 2017. THE EIGHT CHILDREN OUT OF OUR PARISH CANNOT BE PRESENTLY CONSIDERED. NEXT WEEK ACCEPTANCE LETTERS WILL BE SENT OUT. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Reading Recovery Seminar On Friday, 29th April, I attended the annual ‘Reading Recovery’ Seminar at the Leadership Centre in East Melbourne. Our guest speaker, Dr. Noella Mackenzie, is a former Classroom Teacher and Reading Recovery Tutor. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at Charles Sturt University and has worked on a number of research projects about Early Literacy Development with a focus on Writing. Noella spoke primarily about the importance of providing young children with plenty of opportunities to engage in pre-writing activities such as cutting and pasting, drawing, reading aloud, sharing, singing and talking. She stressed that ‘if given models, opportunity, tools and encouragement, children spontaneously start to add writing in their drawings’. Noella’s latest study is entitled, ‘Handwriting, keyboarding or both? That is the question.’ To participate in this study or to simply read further, I invite you to visit Noella’s website: noellamackenzie.com Teresa (Reading Recovery Teacher).

STUDENT WELLBEING SPHERE Domestic and Family

What is domestic and family violence? Generally, an argument occurs over a disagreement or differing points-ofview in relation to a specific issue. During the course of a domestic argument, voices can be raised in heated discussions, but there is still a level of respect and equality between partners. Domestic and family violence occurs when one person in a relationship uses tactics coercing the other person, through the use of violence and abuse, to give in to the abusive person's opinion. The essential difference is the lack of equality and respect between the two people, with one person maintaining control over the other.

Effects on children Children are affected by domestic and family violence even if they have not seen the abuse or violence. You may think that children don’t worry about people fighting at home. You might think children will soon forget things they see, but they DO NOT forget. Children react in a variety of ways; they may show signs that they are affected by the domestic and family violence, or they may keep these signs and their feelings inside. Effects can include: Disturbed sleep and nightmares Wetting the bed Nervous, fearful or withdrawn behaviour Behavioural problems such as aggressive behaviour or running away from home Psychosomatic illnesses (e.g., headaches, asthma and stuttering)

Long-term effects Violent behaviours that are learnt early in life may become the types of behaviours that children come to expect and copy when they are adults because children may learn that: the only way to cope with stress and pressure is through the use of abuse and violence using violence is an appropriate way to solve problems it is okay to use violence to get what you want NOTE: Children exposed to violence in the home do not necessarily become violent themselves. 7

STUDENT WELLBEING SPHERE HOW TO HELP Encourage children to talk – Allow them to talk about anything that may be worrying them. Remember that children are not usually encouraged to talk openly about violence. Give them permission to talk about the violence at home. Remove blame – Ensure that the child knows the violence at home is NOT his or her fault. Children need to hear this, even if you think they wouldn’t blame themselves. Your child is not alone – Let them know that there are other children who have also had similar experiences. Safety comes first – Help your child to make a safety plan which they can follow for those times when he/she feels unsafe. Work out with your child where he/she can go that is safe if you are unable to get away. This could be a neighbour or someone else who lives nearby. Encourage support – encourage your child to have a support network to ensure they have access to people who care about them (e.g., relatives, neighbours, teachers, counsellors).

Family Week 2016 May 16 – 22 ‘CHAMPIONS FOR CHANGE’

This year, the theme for Family Week is ‘Champions for Change’, in recognition of the fact that our children can be champions of social justice as they are interested in how they are connected with, and can contribute to, the world. Teachers will be using an educational resource, The Teacher’s Guide to Family Week, to help the children to explore social justice issues in both Australia and around the world. This resource aims to help shape well-rounded and caring young people via educational activities that explore compassion, dignity, inclusion and responsibility. This year, we will yet again be asking for a gold coin donation from each child. Donations will help to fund refugee and settlement programmes.

The Family Week resources can be downloaded at: www.ccam.org.au/familyweek 12

EDUCATION IN FAITH SPHERE

Brighten Your Corner Helen Steiner Rice We cannot all be famous Or be listed in "Who's Who," But every person, great or small, Has important work to do. For seldom do we realize The importance of small deeds, Or to what degree of greatness Unnoticed kindness leads. For it's not the big celebrity In a world of fame and praise, But it's doing unpretentiously In an undistinguished way. The work that God assigned to us, Unimportant as it seems, That makes our task outstanding, And brings reality to dreams. So do not sit and idly wish For wider, new dimensions where you can put into practice, Your many good intentions. But at the spot God placed you Begin at once to do, Little things to brighten up The lives surrounding you. If everybody brightened up The spot where their standing, By being more considerate, And a little less demanding. This dark old world would very soon Eclipse the evening star, If everybody brightened up The corner where they are!

Happy Mother’s Day to our beautiful Mums! 13
