Direct Access & Easy Access The new St Helens Hospital offers a world class health care environment - from the beginning, there has been agreement across the health community that local services must aspire to the same world class standards. In particular, local GPs must have: •
Direct access to Diagnostics and rapid reporting
•
Direct access to Therapy Services for their patients
•
Easy access to consultant advice and consultant assessment and patients must have:
•
Easy access to the hospital’s services
•
A clean safe environment for care
•
Timely and efficient care pathways through the Hospital
How to Access Access to services is swift (often less than 3 weeks). Typically, patients can be referred by traditional letter or by ‘Choose & Book’. Although a significant increase in referrals (9% last year and a further 9% to date this year) had produced some difficulties with Choose & Book access, these difficulties have been largely resolved and we anticipate trouble-free referral to services at the New St Helens Hospital.
Choose & Book is now easier than ever and will become the method of choice for swift, hassle-free referral.
www.sthk.nhs.uk
Page 9

Direct Access Imaging In the new St Helens Hospital, GPs will have DIRECT access to MRI, CT, X-ray, DEXA & Ultrasound and we are piloting a GP hotline where clinicians can phone and get advice on the most appropriate investigation for their patient. To seek advice, clinicians should telephone 0151 426 1600 and ask for bleep 1233 or 0030.
The state-of-the-art CT scanner at St Helens Hospital
Rapid reporting (95% less than 2 days) will be complemented by direct (electronic) access to images and reports via PACS

Cardio Respiratory at St Helens Hospital
Direct Access Therapy Services Some people, particularly complex elderly patients with relatively rapid functional deterioration, need full multi-disciplinary assessment. For these patients, the Allen Day Unit offers rapid access to the full MDT, including consultant assessment. For many others, however, their GP will identify a need for specific Therapy Assessment (OT/Physio) without consultant or other MDT involvement. For these patients we offer rapid, direct access to Therapy Assessment, for example as part of the Musculoskeletal Assessment Service.
