St. Helen’s Hotel, Dublin, Ireland

‘ Delightful & Gracious’ In the year 1750, when Dublin was the second largest city in the English speaking world, Sir Thomas Cooley, MP. instructed his architect to build him a delightful and gracious mansion in which he could entertain the nobility and gentry of Britain and Ireland. They choose a magnificent location overlooking Dublin Bay on the southern side of the city and they raised this stately house which they called ‘Seamount’.This stately home was later purchased by Viscount Gough who renamed it: St. Helen’s. Today, more than 250 years later, St Helen’s is still regarded as ‘the most delightful and gracious place to stay.’

B

uilt in 1750, St Helen’s , or Seamount House as it was then known, is the most important and interesting of

the great houses of Ireland. Lords and noblemen have lived here. Gracious ladies have lavishly entertained their friends and guests here. Lovers have lingered in these gardens. And artists and authors alike have painted and praised the beauty and hospitality of this magnificent mansion. If these walls could speak they would tell tales of how empires were formed, nations were founded, new continents were explored and history was made while St. Helen’s continued to offer its unique hospitality to generations of guests and visitors.

On warm sunny days, it has long been the tradition at St Helen’s to open the French doors in the lounge, so that guests can step out to the gardens... following in the footsteps of generations of visitors and guests before them. If these gardens could sing they would sing a song of soft breezes and sweet scents and invite you to dally awhile in an oasis of tranquillity, peace and charm.
