Thank you Kevin & Debbie Harvey for Representing St. Germain at the Milwaukee Snow Show

Kevin & Debbie Harvey (Harv’s Vacation Rentals) recently went to the Milwaukee Snow Show at the State Fair Park in Milwaukee to promote snowmobiling in St. Germain. There were numerous compliments about our trails and the consensus was people couldn’t wait to come to St. Germain and ride the best trails in the state!

Trail Boss Jim Wendt The fall season keeps on rolling along as we systematically get our trail system in shape for the upcoming snow season. Our brushing equipment has been out cutting and trimming, signage is being checked and adjusted as needed, and the club brushers have been out removing debris on brushing day. It is a huge task to prepare 100 miles of trail and I personally thank each and every person who has taken time to help with this essential task. All we have to do now is avoid the November ice storms where trees and branches come down causing another system-wide brushing effort. Let's keep our fingers crossed! Groomer drivers are in place with meetings scheduled in November. We are set with our equipment this season— hoping for no major problems. I want to send out my heartfelt thanks to those members who have contributed to our club equipment fund! We are off to a good start. I hope the remaining membership renewals all come in with contributions toward building the fund much larger than hoped for. We want to continue providing the finest riding experience for all members and guests to our area. Thanks to the 27 members who came out for the club brushing day! It was a perfect day to think about snowmobiling with a brisk 27 degree start to the day and light snow flurries falling for most of the morning. It is always a great day with a good turnout to perform this essential task on our trail system. After using muscles we didn't even know we had, a gathering was held at The New Twilight Bar & Grill for a "THANK YOU" pizza dinner that evening. The meal was graciously provided by Sheila Pulec & Tara Pulec again this year. Thanks as always, Sheila & Tara for your continued support of our club! We need more like the crew from Twilight! Get your iron ready.....if you believe the Farmer’s Almanac, we are in for another winter like last season! Happy trails, Jim

Secretary’s Report Not much to report as far as snowmobiling goes. This is the time of year to get the sleds ready for the upcoming season – change the oil, charge the battery, check the belt, replace the carbides, get the maps in order, etc., etc., etc. I know that our sled has been moved from its summer ‘home’ to its winter ‘home’. I know that it won’t be long and the snowmobile clothing will be brought down from the attic and hung in the basement. After that, it will be the wait for the snow to start and the trails to open. Thanks to Barry and Shelley of Knocker’s Pizza Co. for hosting our October membership meeting. There were 38 members present to enjoy the great dinner that they provided. Look for next month’s menu in this newsletter for the dinner at 19th Hole. Kay Schultz

Membership News—Margie Klingsporn Today the Bo-Boen crew is brushing the trails. How appropriate that we are seeing snow flurries out the window. Our Property Owners are listed in this newsletter. A great big thank you goes out to each and every one of them. We would have no trails to ride without their co-operation. Our Bo-Boen mailbox has been stuffed with renewals, my keyboard has been going clickity-clack, and our numbers are climbing astronomically. So here are the current numbers: New Primary Members New Secondary Members Primary Renewing Members Secondary Renewing Members Grand Total

20 4 322 33 379

So the counting continues. For those thinking ahead to next year this would mean that 379 members would be qualified to sign up for the discounted trail pass. It appears that we will be right on target when changes take place next year. That is terrific! Any questions should be directed to me at [email protected] or 715-479-2028. Be sure to read B. B. Mappy’s message in this newsletter. B. B. Mappy’s Hint of the Month: This is more of an announcement than a hint. Many have asked whether we are the largest snowmobile club in Wisconsin. According to AWSC we are indeed the largest. We are close to 200 more than any other club. Go Bo-Boens!!! Welcome to these new Bo-Boen members. Thank you so much for joining our club. Happy trail rides to you in 2014-2015.

ATTENTION NON-RESIDENT SNOWMOBILERS Wisconsin law requires those who use Wisconsin snowmobile trails to display either Wisconsin registration or a snowmobile trail pass. Funds from this program will be designated for use as trail aids and related costs to enhance all Wisconsin snowmobile recreation. The trail pass may be purchased over the counter at many authorized sales locations or by calling WDNR at 1888-WDNRINFo (1-888-936-7463) The $35.00 non-resident snowmobile trail use pass is valid from July 1st through June 30th. A snowmobile trail pass is required to operate a snowmobile not currently registered in Wisconsin on a snowmobile trail. The snowmobile must be currently registered with another jurisdiction. The trail pass must be permanently affixed by its own adhesive to the bottom center portion of the snowmobile windshield. If there is no windshield, the sticker shall be displayed in a highly visible location on the front of the cowling of the snowmobile. Once affixed, the sticker may not be removed or transferred to another snowmobile.

THINK SNOW Snowmobile Safety Education Class December 29 & 30, 2014 Beginning January 1, 2001, any person born on or after January 1, 1985 and who has reached the age of 12, must have completed and received a snowmobile safety certificate in order to operate a snowmobile in Wisconsin. The certificate must be carried while operating the snowmobile, and displayed to a law enforcement officer upon demand. Snowmobile Safety Education Classes are offered in the fall and early winter, and should start appearing on the DNR’s web site within the next month or so. All students are required to obtain a Wisconsin DNR Customer ID# as part of the criteria to graduate from any Recreational Safety Class and provide that number to their instructor. Students can obtain a DNR Customer ID# from St. Germain Sport Marine during business hours or by calling 1888-936-7463 between 7 am to 10 pm. You can also visit a Wisconsin DNR Service Center during their regular scheduled hours. For additional DNR Service Center hours and locations go to www.dnr.wi.gov and click on the “Contact US” tab located at the top. The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club’s Snowmobile Safety Education Class will be held on Monday and Tuesday, December 29 & 30, 2014. Anyone 11-1/2 years of age or older is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education certificate; however, the certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age. Pre-registration is required by calling Peggy Ausloos at (715) 542-3548. If you can donate a couple of hours of your time to help with registration, cookies or bars, grading of tests or helping outside with the machine test, please call Peggy Ausloos at (715) 542-3548. Again this year Judy & Chuck Berard will be making lunch for the kids and are requesting two kitchen helpers from 11:30 to 12:15. If you could lend them a hand please call them at (715) 479-6659.

Etiquette for Encountering Trail Grooming Equipment It is important to respect the work trail groomers do to smooth and restore the snowmobile trails you ride on to a safe condition. Recognize that groomers may be working on the trail at any time. Always keep your snowmobile under control and anticipate that a groomer could be around the next corner or over the hill—and they are a large, immovable object that will win should you collide. Snowmobiles are much smaller and much more maneuverable than groomers, so always yield to trail grooming equipment. Always slow down when approaching or overtaking grooming equipment. Understand that groomers move very slowly—typically only 5 to 8 miles per hour—so they are almost stationary when compared to a snowmobile traveling 30 to 60 miles per hour. When approaching an oncoming groomer on the trail, slow down and move your snowmobile to the far right side of the trail. Realize that the grooming drag or tiller behind the grooming tractor is very wide, may extend wider than the tracks of the tractor, and may take up most or all of the trail's width. If the trail is narrow or winding, you may need to stop at the far outside edge of the trail, or even off it, to allow the groomer to pass. When overtaking a groomer from the rear, slow down and assess the situation ahead. If there is good sight distance and the trail ahead is clear of oncoming traffic, pass the groomer while operating with caution. Beware that the groomer may create snow dust and make visibility poor as you pass it. If the trail is narrow or winding, you may need to stay behind the groomer until the operator pulls over and signals for you to pass. Be patient since it may take quite a bit of time before there is a good location with sufficient room for you to safely pass. If you need to stop a groomer to ask the operator for information or assistance, understand this should be done only in an area where there is good sight distance and is safe for it to stop. The groomer operator may instruct you to follow the groomer to a safer location where he can safely stop to provide the assistance you need. Trail Quality and Set Up Time Snowmobile trail grooming requires a 'set up' time whereby the freshly groomed trail can re-freeze. Therefore riders must understand that riding on freshly groomed trails during this essential set up time can quickly destroy the trail base, resulting in long-term rough trails. Set up time will vary depending upon temperature and moisture content of the snow. Generally, at least two to six or even more than ten hours may be needed for the freshly groomed trail to set up to where it is durable and can withstand heavy snowmobile traffic. Respect the work trail groomer operators do by never following directly behind their grooming equipment, since it immediately destroys their work. If possible, try to avoid riding a snowmobile on freshly groomed trails for at least two hours after the groomer passes by either waiting or choosing an alternate route. Showing this respect can help improve the quality and durability, as well as the safety, of your snowmobile trails. If you come upon a groomer working on the trails and absolutely must use that route, try to minimize your impacts by observing the following groomer etiquette:

    

Slow down! Try to stay off the fresh grooming if the trail or adjacent area is wide enough to safely and legally do so Operate only at the far outside edge of the fresh grooming if your only option is to ride upon the newly groomed trail Keep your group in single file versus allowing everyone to take a different path on the fresh grooming

Don't be purposely disrespectful (and damaging) by intentionally fishtailing or powering through the soft snow Understand that aggressive riding styles harmfully impact the quality and smoothness of the snowmobile trails you ride on—whether the trail is freshly groomed or not. Powerful engines, carbide runners, aggressive tracks, traction devices, fast starts and stops, and powering through curves all combine to destroy the smoothness of any snowmobile trail. So the next time you hit the brake or throttle, think about how you may have innocently (or purposely) contributed to destroying the trails you would really prefer to be smooth.
