“The Lord of the Rings is an epic highfantasy novel written by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. Written in stages between 1937 and 1949, The Lord of the Rings is the best-selling novel ever written, with over 150 million copies sold.” (Wikipedia)

community of St. George, nourished by God’s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2016 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday 8:45 am: Tuesday & Wednesday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am & 6 pm Holy Days: to be announced.

CATHOLICS COME HOME

While Tolkien labored over this epic novel for decades beginning in 1917 and having experienced two world wars and the Great Depression, his novel depicts the great struggle of good vs. evil. Much like the epic Gilgamesh and our own Old Testament stories which put the moral struggle of good and evil into a story form that is easy to remember, share and reflect upon as one personally experiences the same struggle of conscience and actions to do good and avoid evil. The two heroes of The Ring Trilogy, in the third book, “The Return of the King.” are Frodo Baggins, and Samwise "Sam" Gamgee. Having overcome severe challenges and dangers with the help of many friends who make up “The Fellowship of the Ring” they finally reach the edge of the river of doom where the ring can be destroyed and evil overcome, but Frodo is tempted one last time to take possession of the ring. Smeagel, a riverfolk person who early in the trilogy takes possession of the ring, is overwhelmed by its evil influence and succumbs to its attraction calling the ring “my precious” and is transformed into a corrupted creature called Gollum. The final struggle for possession of the ring

and its power is between Gollom and Frodo. Gollom bites the ring from Frodo’s finger, but in the struggle falls into the River of Doom where he and the ring are destroyed. In that struggle Frodo slips and is hanging on to the edge of the chasm over the River of Doom and is out of strength to save himself. Sam, his friend, often in the trilogy doubted and rejected, with what little strength he has left extends his hand to Frodo and shouts to him “Reach!” With the last reserves of strength Sam pulls his friend, Frodo, from the edge of destruction. Frodo’s bloodied hand is a reminder of how close he came to succumbing to the evil influence of the ring. In this Year of Mercy we call to mind how often we have been tempted, enticed and sinned, sometimes greatly, yet the love of God calls out to us “Reach!” It was not God himself, but others who struggle alongside us who call us back from the brink of doom. Our gospel today, John 10:27-30, presents us with the victory won for us by Christ which we celebrate at every Mass. The image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd gives us hope; for Christ experienced our humanity. His words give us courage, even though we have sinned, “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.” Not only are we called to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd, but like Sam, Frodo’s good friend, we too reach out to one another. An old song by Diana Ross captures that spirit, “Reach Out and Touch”. We, who have been touched by the love of God through others, are now responsible to “make this world a better place, if you can.” Fr. Ken Fleck

Archdiocese of Chicago Parishioner Survey Archbishop Cupich would like your input. When Archbishop Cupich announced the “Renew My Church” initiative in January, he invited everyone in the Archdiocese of Chicago to participate in the process of revitalizing our parish communities. Just as Pope Francis asked Catholics across the globe for their input prior to the Synod of Bishops meetings in 2014 and 2015, Archbishop Cupich is asking for your help as the Archdiocese begins a new listening phase of this important effort. Please take time to respond to a survey designed to help Archbishop Cupich and the Archdiocese of Chicago better understand the perspectives of Catholics across Cook and Lake Counties. We encourage you to complete the survey online at www.archchicago.org/renew. Paper copies are available at the exits of church. Please note all responses will be anonymous.

Jubilee Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016 Mercy Mondays The Second Monday of Every Month at 7:00 pm: To celebrate the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, the parishes of Tinley Park, Orland Park and Lemont are collaboratively working to promote the different facets of mercy in our lives. On the second Monday of each month, our parishes are hosting Mercy Monday events, which include times of prayer, reflection and/or putting mercy into action. In this way, we are responding to Pope Francis’ invitation to bring mercy and compassion into every corner of our world. We are called to be instruments of God’s mercy -which knows no limits and which is needed on so many levels in the world today. There are freewill offerings taken at each event; any contributions received will be set aside for Corporal Works of Mercy outreach & service. Funds may support (but are not limited to) Sole Hope, Port Ministries, Sacred Heart Mission, Tinley/Orland First Responders and local senior living centers. Thank you!

UPCOMING MERCY MONDAY EVENTS Monday, May 9, 2016 John Donahue-Grossman

“The Way of Jesus” with St. Cyril in Lemont, (630) 257-2776, [email protected]

Who was this Jewish Rabbi who changed the world and continues to capture our hearts, souls and imaginations 2,000 years later: What does it mean to follow him? John utilizes biblical texts, commentaries and wisdom of scripture scholars, as he guides us on a journey back in time to rediscover his identity and essential teachings. This presentation uses the four gospels as unique perspectives or paths as ways of being a disciple. John will also incorporate the corporal works of mercy in addition to Mary as a disciple of Jesus and His mercy. John is a gifted speaker who challenges his audiences to use his lessons as a way to reach out in love to the least among us. He is currently the Director of Retreats at LaSalle Manor Retreat Center in Plano and a board member of Outside da Box. Sat – Mon, June 11 - 13, 2016

Corporal Works of Mercy Weekend

Parishioners will be challenged to participate in Corporal Works of Mercy, either as a family or as individuals working together. From spending time cleaning up area parks to providing home-baked cookies to area first responders or seniors, from giving a day of service in Hopkins Park, IL, to providing lunches to Port Ministries or turning old jeans into foot coverings for people in Uganda through Sole Hope, we will show God’s love in action.

First Communion Retreat PRO-LIFE ++++++++++++++++++

YOUR ADOPTED BABY AT TWO MONTHS Very soon the baby you spiritually adopted will have two full months of development toward birth. During this second month your adopted baby has been developing external features and internal organs. The brain is functioning at forty days. The baby's heartbeat can be heard on an ultrasonic stethoscope. Ultrasound images have discovered babies already sucking their thumbs at two months. Everything the baby needs to survive at birth is already present by the end of the eighth week, but just needs time to fully develop and grow in size. Please continue praying for your adopted baby each day.

St. George School and Religious Education students who are preparing for their First Communion attended a retreat last Sunday. The retreat reinforced what they have been learning about the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the connection of the Sacraments of Initiation. They made blankets to be given to infants who will be baptized at St. George Parish in the future. Please continue to pray for these students and their families.

PROTEST OF PLANNED PARENTHOOD IN ORLAND PARK On April 23, pro-lifers across the nation will conduct the first annual protest at Planned Parenthood locations nationwide, to be held on the fourth Saturday of April every year until the abortion chain no longer preys upon our communities. We’ll call on Congress and the States to cut off all government funding to Planned Parenthood and bring charges against all those responsible for the horrific harvesting and selling of baby parts. And we’ll demand that all charges against undercover journalist David Daleiden be dropped. Help us expose the horror of abortion and bring an end to Planned Parenthood in our nation. Event: National Day of Protest against Planned Parenthood When: Saturday, April 23, 10:00 am - noon Where: Orland Park Planned Parenthood -- We will gather along the public right-of-way extending from 14470 LaGrange Road in Orland Park. Parking is available in the Orland Chateau lot (14500 S. LaGrange Road), but please park in the back. More Info: Email Bill Beckman at [email protected] UPDATE ON 40 DAYS FOR LIFE The international 40 Days for Life vigil at abortion facilities ran from February 10 through March 20 at 273 locations throughout the USA and in another 22 nations. Three vigils took place in Illinois, including one in Downers Grove. After final reports have been received from most vigil locations, 598 babies and their mothers are known to be saved from abortion. You can be certain that many more mothers had a change of heart that was not made known to vigil participants. These prayer vigils also led to some additional employees leaving the abortion industry and four more facilities closing forever.

BROADVIEW DEPORTATION CENTER Every Friday morning at 7:15 am, people of faith join together in a prayer vigil at Broadview Immigration Processing Center (1930 Beach St., Broadview, IL) to support those who are in the immigration deportation process, the families of those being deported and to be a public witness to the injustices of our immigration system. An interfaith prayer service is held on the first Friday of every month. The rosary is prayed on the remaining Fridays. All are welcome every Friday. No special training or advance notice is needed to participate in the prayer vigil. Every Friday morning, buses filled with men and women shackled by their hands, feet and waists leave for local airports to be deported. Clergy, lay leaders and people of faith offer prayers on the buses to accompany them in their difficult journey and to let them know that people of faith stand with them and are working to change these unjust policies. Teams of clergy and lay leaders go inside Broadview Immigration Processing Center on Friday mornings to pray with and visit with people who are being deported that day. Volunteers also support families as they come to say goodbye to their loved ones. To find out how you can volunteer, call (773) 779-6011, ext. 3846. For information call Angie Brady (708) 532-3644. We would love to have you with us. Dear St. George Church, Because of you, our Bread Truck is feeding the hungry, our FREE Health Clinic is caring for the sick, our After School Program is tutoring students, our Open Gym is engaging at-risk teens and our Adult Life Skills Workshop is educating community members. We are truly humbled by the support we receive. By responding to our need, you have empowered the Port Ministries to continue to be a place of prayer, hope and love. St. George Church, we would like to invite you to our upcoming Open House, Saturday, May 7 from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Our staff and volunteers are excited to open the doors to the community and introduce new programming, such as the free art workshops, studio space and the expansion of our Open Gym program. If possible, we would love to see you there and thank you in person. Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan Charism, our mission is to provide the fundamental needs of mind, body and spirit. We do this by offering free services and resources to south side Chicago residents so they can better themselves, their families and strengthen our community. Thank you for coming to our aid and supporting The Port Ministries. We hope you and yours had a wonderful and happy Easter! Inspired by St. Francis, David H. Gonzalez Executive Director

Working Bikes Cooperative Bike Collection and St. George School Donation Drive Despite the cold, rain, sleet and snow the two donation drives this past weekend were supported with an overwhelming response! Thank you to all who donated bicycles to the Working Bikes Cooperative Bike Collection. We were able to supply 58 bicycles to this wonderful cause! Thank you to Angie Brady, Diana Karasek, Carol Ferkula, Arlene Astrowski and 7th grader Devin Peters for braving the weather and collecting those donations. Thank you to everyone who donated your used goods to the St. George School Donation Drive. We collected 5,185 pounds of clothing and shoes, 944 pounds of books and 3,028 pounds of housewares, toys and other miscellaneous items. Our school will receive a check from Savers Thrift Store in Orland Park in the amount of $1,235.60 which will be used to purchase a new laminating machine for our staff. A special thank you goes out to Lisa Karlstedt, PTL treasurer, for organizing this wonderful fundraiser and to Stacey Yock, Erika House, Larry Tucker, Jaclyn Tucker, Lauren Tucker, Martin Tuohy, Jody Garg, Angela Patrick and Ethan Patrick for volunteering your time to collect the donations. These two drives will touch the lives of many, many people in our own community and across the world. Because of the kind hearts of our school families and parishioners, your donations will change the lives of many people. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. God bless you. BOTH of these drives will be back next spring so hold onto those bikes and used goods to donate next year!

St. George Parish Pastoral Council Corner REMINDER: On Sunday, April 24, the Parish Pastoral Council will be hosting an informational luncheon in the Rectory Meeting Room at 12:30 pm for parishioners who are interested in becoming a Parish Council member. This luncheon meeting will highlight important information you need to consider while making the decision if this ministry is right for you. What a better place to share your ideas and concerns with other parishioners, staff and priests of our Parish. We would like to thank you in advance for considering joining the Parish Council.

Seeing Rightly

A series of lunch, learning and networking for women.

Someone once told me they didn’t know how to pray in the Holy Family Chapel. They were tired of reciting the same old prayers in the books. I told them I think they really didn’t need to say formal prayers all the time. When you come to spend time with the Blessed Sacrament, just say “thanks” for the graces you received and for the prayers answered, and tell Him about your needs. You don’t have to say much more. Just spend the time looking at the Blessed Sacrament and give Jesus a chance to talk to you. But, when you look at the Blessed Sacrament, look with your heart as well as with your eyes. As the author Antoine De Saint-Exupery wrote in one of his books: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is really important is invisible to the eyes.” Try it and you’ll see. Then, if you haven’t yet, call Bill Beckman at (708) 429-2762 and sign up to spend an hour every week with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. You will then see rightly every week.

I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Moments after receiving a call on the mobile outreach hotline, Catholic Charities dispatches a van to meet a young adult on the street and provide free transportation - with no strings attached - to a safe shelter. When others may just walk by, we act. Multiply this act at our 164 locations which are open to all. Every 30 seconds someone counts on us for help. Give to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day so people are fed, comforted, sheltered and cared for at any stage in life. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net.

There are sign up forms at the exits of church. For more information, please contact Darlene Georges at (708) 532-2243.
