“DESTRUYAN ESTE TEMPLO… YO LO RECONSTRUIRÉ.”

“DESTROY THIS TEMPLE… I WILL RAISE IT UP.”

emember the Father’s words to the disciples after Jesus had been transfigured: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him” (Mark 9:7). This week Jesus begins a three-Sunday “seminar” with us on the meaning of his upcoming death and resurrection. The next three Sunday Gospels will help us reflect on the mystery of Christ’s death on the cross. Today, after a dramatic visit to the temple where Jesus wreaks havoc by overturning the tables of both the moneychangers and those selling animals for sacrifice, Jesus speaks about what is going to happen to him in the future: “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” He is speaking not about the temple of Jerusalem, where the people believed God dwelled, but the temple of his own body that would be destroyed by crucifying him on the cross. God’s dwelling place would no longer be a temple made of stone but the risen body of Christ and the body of his church. Paul calls Christ crucified the revelation of the power and wisdom of God.

Spend time this week meditating on how God redefines wisdom and strength through the cross.

PLEASE NOTE: The readings from today’s Mass are from Year A: Exodus 17:3-7, Psalm 95, Romans 5:1-2,5-8, and John 4:5-42. Considering we have Catechumens preparing to receive the Sacraments, these readings were used to go in accordance with the Missal and Lectionary for a ritual Mass, “Christian Initiation: The Scrutinies.”

LIVING THE EUCHARIST • VIVE LA EUCARISTÍA REFLECT Are you willing to make sacrifices in your everyday

REFLEXIÓNA ¿Estás dispuesto a hacer sacrificios en tu vida

life, for love of God and neighbor? Sometimes a sacrifice means going out of your way to help somebody, or taking a humble attitude, or doing something good when it’s inconvenient. Think about the week that just passed. What opportunities were presented to you? How did you respond? ACT Make time to share a meal with someone. Maybe invite a family member whom you don’t see often, or a friend or colleague you’ve put off because of your busy schedule. Make it delightful. Let “living the spirit of Eucharist” be the hidden agenda of the meal. PRAY Jesus, you are the true Lamb, whose blood consecrates the homes of all believers. Thank you for giving your life for me. You are the Good Shepherd, who spreads a banquet before us. Thank you for feeding me. How can I bring you to this hungry world? Show me the way!
