St. Eugene Catholic Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 2017 I have a few poems from my notebook I’d like to share to begin the New Year. The Immigrant Land In the church they gather and shout “Viva” the Pope, their homeland, Cristo Rey, all-“Viva” Alive in the hearts of exiles everywhere Chicago, Cuba, Cincinnati, Havana the native place of all longing is the heart, wherever it resides. I wonder, are we not all homeless wanderers, the anawim of history uprooted from the loam of hearth and home to wonder in search of what we do not remember? Gypsies, pirates, Magi, Jews All of whom, it is said, want only to go home if only home would sate the restless heart. Have we no harbor? are our feet to tread only another’s land? Is there not somewhere that nourishes our blood? This certain unease was a proof of heaven once: Since we are so unsettled we are no more than God’s children ever disappointed that Father is not home. Maybe the proof is not iron clad but clothed in the rags of our longing It is only the embers of heaven we carry they roar only if breathed upon by the breezes of a farther shore: there, over there, not too much more!

On the Gloomy Prospects of a Mexican Santa Claus Jose, Juan, Maria, all niños beware That man in the red suit doesn’t care. Santa invites us all to seek and buy Which we do, but we don’t ask: why? He comes to bring gifts to girls and boys And fulfill their dreams of dolls and toys. But he’s got another reputation Earned by commercial deputation.

The gifts that are given on Christmas Day Are not free, someone has to pay And the price leaves you in the hole For they cost only your immortal soul. I know, I know we celebrate the Christ child, Giving gifts honors the meek and mild. But the journey Americans have made Reveals the price we have had to pay. For when Christmas is a buying spree What we celebrate is not Christ, but me. Nothing aborts holy Jesus’ birth Faster than a measurement of worth Inched in presents, trees and decorations Hoping we’ve met others’ expectations. Santa brings to us all this and more His presents open wide changes’ door. While the first look and taste now seem tame In the end, nothing at all will remain. The End Coming The end will come, “not with a bang but a whimper,” Words to guard us from the fear of another's distemper

January 1, “Won’t you be at the funeral then?” It is an honor, a bit. They want me there, sure, but they have their reasons. Often because they have floated away from the dock of the Church and find they’re in deep water now and know to call out. Or they need a family face and mine is the one they conjure. No matter the reason, the call comes and I affirm, to stand and say a few words. To compress the pages of the gospel and the chapter of a life, into 15 minutes of prose, and transfer the years of pain or the last moments of surprise

But they do not protect us from the lies endemic into a story we know From the loss of certainty now deeply systemic But all life is ended, The clarity so marking our noble and heroic and there is left, past the story to tell, Is roused only as we shudder, collectively aghast I only have to find the words. All done in the name of freedom and license Beyond the pointed arrows of why or whence Until with no answers comes questions no more The kites of imagination, strings cut, cannot soar But drift and tumble and fall, rolling to ground We, ending, are lost, waiting to be found The Phone Call I get the message, regularly, from the members of the family or from those I know at the places I’ve been

Go to the Promised Land Go to the Promised Land hand in hand they were told, at once To enjoy the life there dare upon dare for days and weeks and months Son upon son I swear leave care without care to ride and conquer and hunt And so they went, immediately elbow to arm, knee to knee

St. Eugene Catholic Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 2017 moving forward, facing front To find the future firm following turn after turn amid shouts and growls and grunts Written into the bedrock stone God, alone among the alone bearing the weight, the brunt As a gift to the blessed ones each and all done and done whether the wise or the dunce So go and get, receive now affirm, vow after vow all substantive, lost not even once The Letter Today The letter arrived today, from those to whom I have pledged It was bent and a bit torn, beat up, wedged in the mailbox, a gift from the Post Office, forlorn.

perfect for me, really But when I consign the check to its place and seal the envelope to be carried away, I still wonder whether I buy away the chance to see, in the faces of those who wait patiently at the offices we build, the face of Christ? The real journey, doesn’t it begin when we’re all penned together, neither of us knowing our want, until, together we find what will bind us? Our need for heaven and the seeds of hell, they grow together, when we uproot one, we dig up the other, I only hope I can, with the envelope I send, do charity.

So I opened with care and had to repair the envelope before I could post it redux.

My First Watch At sixteen it was decided in a fit of collective concern any man, like me, who resided in our second hand world must learn

I had marked the specified box on the information they gave and filled out my name and address and they sent me their notice

First of all, the feel of banded presence tying wrist and future intention to form one whole not lessened by capricious third party decisions

They carry the charity I am now bound to and ask only that I support them and their work in lieu of being there

So they gave me a gilded watch; curious name you know, I’m to spy the time so a life’s not botched by being late or early or surprised.

I do. How could I –

But they also give the watch a face so its cycloptic eye can look settle a family’s creeping panic about a visa at all the passage of my lively race or find a decent house for a refugee’s spouse to fill the days on my calendar book or be able to tell that girl to stop cutting; (she just moved from Brownsville and And not once think on real life everyone in town here hates her)? erupting on its own, more subtle time revealed more in whispered sighs With the letter it’s charity, than in well kept column lines. streamlined,

January 1, Are we not the ones who have faces turned toward those who always wonder the passing of time in pounding haste who tear the fabric of past asunder? Why do we not look and tell? Why not be watches that tick ever on? that just as time’s promptly ringing bell our faces have time upon them drawn? When bishop’s hands touched my crown in ancient rite passed from 12 apostles I was solemnly, grace-fully, bound to temporalities; marked by possibles So began the end of grandiose dreams where all things that can be imagined lived undented spans, where lilting paeans are but words to shore up what has crashed in. To become the condensed thought which banks the river of potential directing its steaming, flowing froth to cut from hardest rock a channel. So, while I cannot be both here and there though I might carry Mexico in my dreams I do continue to find Aztec hopes where only whited faces and glass fronts gleam. Lemmings As twisting flight of fur we Lemmings Are as graceful, in our own unique way As the lines on ice traced by Peggy Fleming Cutting the patterns so carefully during her day Of proving to the judges she can skate Although we’re falling, falling in heated rush Pushing past the cliff’s edge into space Ending our lives piled in a red splattered mush Winning, but losing, evolution’s programmed race And living our already, precisely determined fate It’s not so exciting to be one of us Lemmings Eating, breeding, sleeping: life’s present pattern

St. Eugene Catholic Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 2017 You don’t have to be a genius like Albert Demming And try to live efficiently, work at growing fat or Just getting by without being too late.

January 1,

Dashing, slashing, hopping, smashing in nature’s strife, It doesn’t do much good to wonder and cry If everything and all is to finally cease and abate.

As the maligned and uneliding Lemmings At love and fate and cussed conviction, sont tres bon Even if, as a poetic word, they don’t really, the reader’s eye, sate.

No, there’s this brief unpleasantness at the end When the law of gravity finally leaves us undone Before the final moment, whether graced or sinned, We have a pretty full measure of Lemming fun As we rocket toward the final, long Lemming wait.

We furred creatures do just what’s possible Even as we crowd up and paw and rush You know we like mountains and cliffs impassable so we can end our lives’ journey in a rousing flush of Romantic insistence— “I’m Nature’s gate!”

A Last Little Poem: We wanted an army of men in black, to march on a culture of greed and lack We changed the way of the Church’s formin’ – Now we’ve got men in black, mostly Mormon

But when you think about the contours of life, Whether people, poodles, gnats or hippopotami

So, lift a glass and cheer and banquet with all the trimmings There are no others with such cran, élan

Happy New Year.
