November is a time to remember all souls and all saints as a Catholic Community. It is important for us to remember and pay tribute to both All Saints and All Souls Days and place them in perspective as they follow the secular Halloween festivities. It is also a month during which we remember the young men and women who have served Canada during times of war, conflict and peace in order to protect the rights of Canadians and citizens of other countries. As each generation becomes further removed from the great wars it is more important for us to keep these memories and contributions alive. We will have a Remembrance Day liturgy on November 11 @ 10:40 am. M. Araman Principal

REMEMBRANCE DAY PRAYER Dear Father in heaven: Please help us to develop good consciences. We always need to remember what Jesus would do, and try to do as He would, even when we are tempted the most not to. Let us always remember the soldiers who fought in the great wars and died for us that we may live in a country free and peaceful. As we look at the poppies worn on the hearts of others help us to appreciate the sacrifices shown on the battlefield. We ask this through Jesus Christ Amen By Reese and Alyssa

BULLYING PREVENTION

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER

November’s Key Theme: Everyone Needs to Learn How to Live in Peace In November we need to focus on the message of peace. Peace is defined as inner contentment, serenity and harmonious relations. Each classroom has a prayer area or corner. This can also be used as a place to center oneself, to take a moment for personal reflection or to resolve conflict with another student. This idea of having a ‘calming’ space is used in schools, workplaces and family homes.

Now that colder weather is upon us, we respectfully remind you to ensure that your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities. When weather conditions are severe, we may reduce the outdoor playtime, or have indoor recess entirely. Fresh air and exercise are vital components for successful learning, so we will endeavor to have children play outside whenever possible. Help your children come to school appropriately dressed with warm coats, scarves, hats and mittens on those really chilly days! For health and safety reasons and to help keep the school clean, we ask all students to have indoor shoes. For students in grades 1 to 3, a spare set of socks and pants in their knapsacks is advisable. This would avoid unnecessary phone calls to parents requesting a change of clothing be brought to school when and if children are wet. Thank you for your support. Also please remember that if students are well enough to come to school, they are well enough to go outside to play. If you feel that is not the case, please keep them home.

PUBLIC SPEAKING Tips for Parents:

help your child learn to recognize early signs that they are becoming agitated or upset

create a calming space or reflection area in your home

learn the steps of the conflict resolution model the school uses and apply those at home

This year the Mississauga North Academic Competitions Committee has informed us that the Family level public speaking competition will be held on November 24th at St. Simon Stock. Therefore, our school competitions will be held on November 17th (intermediate and junior). Please support your child in his/her work in editing and rehearsing the speech. We look forward to witnessing the oral skills of our Stein stars. As always, parents are welcome to attend.

During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually decided by 7:00 a.m. and will be posted on the Dufferin Peel website, www.dpcdsb.org, and announced on the following radio stations:

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH This month we will celebrate the virtue of Conscience. God has given us the ability to know the right and decent way to act and then to act that way. We trust that the common Spirit is what inspires us and guides us to make good decisions if we allow our conscience to be well-formed. A person of conscience allows prayer and scripture to influence him or her. A person of conscience …

Chooses to do the ‘right thing’ and feels good about it

Can see how his or her actions may hurt others

Admits his or her wrong-doing and feels badly

Says ‘sorry’ and tries to make up for mistakes

Keeps promises

In the event that school busses are cancelled, St. Edith Stei School will remain open for students. The school will be closed only if the Board decides to close all schools due to poor weather conditions or anticipated poor weather conditions. Please note that when schools are closed to students they are also closed to staff.

PLEASE CALL IN ABSENCES We have noticed that fewer parents are calling in student absences in the morning. Please support us in implementing our Safe Arrival Policy by calling our 24 hour phone line. 905 824 5777 If your child is going to be absent or late please call the school before 8:45am.

STUDENT SUPERVISION Supervision of students in the playground begins at 8:45 am before school begins and ends at 3:45 pm after the day ends. Please note that the park is off limits to students during supervision times. After school the paved area is lightly supervised to ensure students leave school property. Parents are strongly urged to expect students to go directly home and report their safe arrival before going out to play. This will reduce the potential for conflicts and other problems that frequently arise after school when secondary students and students from other schools may be in the vicinity.

At the Tuesday, October 25, 2016 Meeting of the Board of Trustees, a number of changes that impact the role of various Supervisory Officers within DufferinPeel were passed. Some of these changes had a direct impact on my role as Superintendent of Schools for the Mississauga North Family and I am now transitioning to the role of Superintendent of Special Education and Learning Services.

From Tilia Cruz Superintendent For Mississauga

North

As I transition to this new portfolio, I reflect upon my journey as Superintendent of the Mississauga North Family of Schools. I have been blessed to be a part of this community for a number of years: first, as a principal in the Family for 5 years and then as Superintendent for the past 3 and a half years. I am so very grateful for the gift to serve an amazing group of students, parents, staff, volunteers, and parish teams. This Family quickly became my second home and this Family an extension of my own. As I move into the role of Superintendent of Special Education and Learning Services, I do so knowing that this community will continue to move forward and make the lives of our children and families even richer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Rosanna Commisso, our Special Education Consultant, and Ms. Sharon Gibney, Administrative Assistant for the Family of Schools, for their tremendous contributions to support our entire community. My next thank you goes out to all of the staff working in our schools, from custodians and secretaries to teachers, occasional teachers, ERWS and itinerant staff. I have personally witnessed the excellent work that they do to support our schools in both making them safe learning environments as well as inviting and motivating spaces to learn. My final thank you is for all parents and students. Parents, your choice to raise your children in a Catholic school community is important and commendable: your children are encouraged to dream and set goals that will bring them happiness and joy, as they become fully human and fully alive. Together, we are working to make them successful Catholic Graduates, celebrating each of their individual capacities. To the students of this Family, I express deep gratitude for the journey taken together. You are a remarkable group of young people and I hope that God will keep you safe and happy, always. I have been so very privileged to meet many of you as I have visited your classrooms and schools and I have received many letters from you in which you have shared your thoughts and expectations of our system and I have enjoyed listening to these voices. Always aim high and move ahead with the values that Jesus has taught us all. It is my distinct pleasure to welcome Mr. Eric Fischer to the role of Superintendent of Schools for Mississauga North. Mr. Fischer brings with him a wealth of experience as an educator, at the school and system levels and will continue to shepherd this Family, moving forward. May God bless you all and keep you in the palm of His hand….
