Educating the Active Learner

We've all had children who just need to be moving. That energy can be a great thing! This workshop will focus on activities that use that positive energy to help grasp new concepts. Tantrums and Whining

Dr. Hackney will cover the basics of tantrums, how to prevent them, and ways to manage when they start. This will include the role of intermittent reinforcement and ways to address whining. Rene Hackney, Ph.D., Owner, Parenting Playgroups, Inc. (All)

Using Open-Ended Crafts and Materials to Develop Creativity

Some children learn best when given the opportunity to think outside the box. Come learn how to make simple changes in your teaching methods to help reveal what your children really know and how to better cultivate their creativity. Summer Fun Activities

What images come to mind when you think of summer? Sunshine, swimming, sand, lemonade, reading, baseball, thunderstorms, 4th of July and vacation might be some. 5. Using Sensory Activities in Preschool Sensory activities allow children to use their five senses. This workshop will help teachers ensure activities are sensory related and purposeful for learning. LaToya Harper-Williams, Training and Curriculum Specialist.

What’s New in Children’s Picture Books

This is an introduction to recently published children’s picture books and ways to use them in classroom programs. This interactive workshop will highlight literacy elements, discuss authors and illustrators, and explain how to use supplemental materials for enrichment. Reaching Out to Dual Language Learners: Top 10 Strategies to Foster Communication

Not to be confused with David letterman’s Top 10, this workshop focuses on concrete ways to enhance communication between preschool professionals and students who speak more than one language. During this workshop, preschool professionals will learn about the stages of second language development and multicultural literature that highlights and honors a variety of cultural traditions. Infant/Toddler Interaction Through Caregiving Routines

Interactions during routines create many opportunities to spend one-on-one time with a child. This workshop will explore how to create meaningful interactions with infants and toddlers. Helen Webster, Virginia Infant & Toddler Specialist Network, Fairfax County Office for Children.

Thursday, May 1 (7:30 – 9:00 p.m.) Registration deadline – April 28 9. Making Math and Science Important Math and science are linked and are essential parts of learning at all levels. Teachers in this workshop will learn why they should expand math and science in their curriculum; teaching techniques and meaningful activities will be explored. Supporting Social-Emotional Development

One of the most critical factors for academic and professional success is social competence. It is important for children to learn to interact with others, be empathetic, and how to build appropriate relationships. This workshop will look at how and why teachers and caregivers should facilitate the development of social competence in their children. Motor Development

Dealing with Oppositional Defiance

This newer label leaves many teachers scratching their heads. What is oppositional defiance? What does it look like? How do I change it? All these questions will be addressed in this workshop. You also will practice how to implement proven ways to turn oppositional defiance into positive actions with others. DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFAX CAMPUS FROM THE CAPITAL BELTWAY (I-495) Take Exit 54, Braddock Road (West). Go approximately six miles. Pass the first entrance to the university, then turn right at the stop light at Roanoke River Road. Bear left at the fork in the road onto Patriot Circle (the fork is just before the pond) and follow Patriot Circle a short distance to parking Lot K on the left. Follow the sidewalk on the left side of the pond to the center of campus. The George Johnson Center is about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot. For the GMU Mason Pond Parking Deck ... Pass the first entrance to the university and turn right at the stop light at Roanoke River Road. At the fork in the road, bear right onto Patriot Circle, then take a quick left onto Mason Pond Road/Drive. Follow Mason Pond to the parking deck on your right. Once you cross Route 123 (Ox Road), take the first left into campus (Roanoke River Road). Bear left at the fork in the road onto Patriot Circle (the fork is just before the pond). Follow Patriot Circle a short distance to parking Lot K on the left. Follow the sidewalk on the left side of the pond to the center of campus. The George Johnson Center is about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot. For the GMU Mason Pond Parking Deck … Stay on Braddock Road; cross Route 123 and turn left at the stoplight onto Roanoke River Road. At the fork in the road, bear right onto Patriot Circle, then take a quick left onto Mason Pond Road/Drive. Follow Mason Pond to the parking deck on your right. The third deck offers best access to the George Johnson Center. DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFAX CAMPUS VIA I-66 WEST Take Exit 60 and follow Route 123 South, Chain Bridge Road, through the city of Fairfax. Follow Patriot Circle a short distance to parking Lot K on the left. Follow the sidewalk on the left side of the pond to the center of campus. The George Johnson Center is about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot. For the GMU Mason Pond Parking Deck … Turn left at Braddock Road, then left at the light for Roanoke River Road into campus.
