Dear Vernon Hills Residents, I know it may not feel like it yet, but soon warmer weather will welcome everyone back to the parks, kids back to the playgrounds and camps, and families to the pool. Speaking of pools, Family Aquatic Center (FAC) season passes are on sale now! Purchase your pass before April 30th and save 10%. I hope everyone who enjoys our aquatic center all summer long will attend our annual Summer Splash pool party family event on August 5th. Kids’ Castle Playground in Deerpath Park will be getting a complete makeover this spring. Its originality and charm will be represented in a new design representative of a castle. Thank you to all of the residents who came out to Deerpath Park in the fall to help tear down the original Kids’ Castle. Other renovations to Deerpath Park include the addition of player’s benches, bleachers, backstops to the ball fields; electricity, and six tennis courts. The Sullivan Community Center will be undergoing a renovation beginning this June with a completion in the spring of 2017. The Administrative staff, currently housed in the Larry Laschen Community Center, is moving to the Sullivan Center and additional office space is being created for this purpose. Additionally, a new, secure preschool wing is being developed with four classrooms and a second gymnasium is being built too. A more detailed explanation of the renovation can be found on page 4. The Turtles Swim Team coaches are offering swim clinics during Spring Break, March 21-25. The clinics are focused on committed swimmers who are interested in furthering their competitive strokes. Moreover, a Red Cross Lifeguard Certification class is also offered during spring break for those 15 years and older. Successful completion of this course results in a 2-year Lifeguard Certification. See page 6 for details. Outdoor water recreational programs are now being offered at the Park District! Youth Sailing classes (page 36) and Adult Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) classes (page 42) are being offered multiple times in June and July. Learn a new sport and register for these new programs early! We are also offering new adult fitness classes: Simply Strength, TRX, and Masala Bhangra. Classes are listed beginning on page 46. The time is now to find what fitness program works best for you! Mark your calendar for our Movies in the Park series! Free movies will be shown on the last Friday of the month, June through August in Deerpath Park. Check the website for the featured movie of the month. We have eight special events (pages 6-10) planned for this spring and summer! On Saturday, July 23, we are offering our first Flick & Float, a family evening at the Family Aquatic Center to play in the pool and watch a movie on the big, inflatable movie screen. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendars for our annual Little Bear Ribfest on August 19th and 20th. Have fun this summer and be sure to take time to enjoy your parks. Jim Ballowe
