Spring silent auction opens April 13 T

H e l p i n g a r e a s e n i o r c i t i z e n s l i v e i n d e p e n d e n t ly, w i t h d i g n i t y, s i n c e 1 9 7 4 .

he Negaunee Senior Center will launch its annual Spring Silent Auction fundraiser on Monday, April 13. The auction will feature goods and services donated by the Negaunee Senior Center staff, family, friends and local businesses. The year’s auction will include the following:

• Personalized dinner for six at the center with entertainment • Organizing help in your home • Senior Center apparel package Other prizes also will be available. If you are interested in donating services or new items for the auction, please call to discuss your idea. Bids must be placed in person, and the auction will end promptly at noon

Fiesta-Siesta day trip set; sign-up deadline is April 8

T

he Negaunee Senior Center will offer a Fiesta-Siesta day trip on April 13, traveling to Sol Azteca Mexican restaurant in Marquette for lunch. Departure is at 10:45 a.m. Cost is $2 to cover bus transportation. Lunch is paid for on your own. We will have a hearty lunch party (fiesta) and then take a good nap on the way home (siesta) To sign up, come to the center to pay by Wednesday, April 8. Bus pick

up is available at the Richmond Township Hall and Lakeview Apartments by request. Other trips planned include a special Mother’s Day event in May, Carp River Gardens in June, Art on the Rocks in July, Hotplate in September, Big Bay for an October color tour, our annual Holiday Light Tour in December and a few other trips that are still in the works. Wedding shower planned S

enior center administrative assistant Olivia Stanaway is getting married in May, and we are planning a wedding shower for her on Friday, April 17. All ladies are invited to celebrate her engagement with fun and games. A potluck meal will be served. Due to our gift policy, we are asking those who wish to attend not bring gifts, but rather contribute to the potluck or make a donation to the center if attendees feel they

want to do something for the event. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP by Monday, April 13 so the group can plan to accommodate everyone. An informal reception will be held at the senior center the week after Olivia’s wedding day that will be for all senior center friends. Olivia is marrying Cameron Pirhonen, originally of Negaunee, on May 16. For details, call 475-6266.

Potluckers pick favorite dishes

T

he next Potluckers will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 17, and will feature a “favorite recipe” party in honor of our administrative assistant’s wedding shower. Food must arrive by 11:00 a.m. and the meal is served by noon. Pre-register by Monday, April 13. Those who wish to eat, but don’t want to bring a dish can pay a $5 fee and also must pre-register. A limited number of slots are available for those not bringing a dish to ensure we have enough food. Couples can bring one main dish, two side dishes or one side dish and pay $5 for the second meal. Buying, selling and more Musical Mealtime in April

T

he Negaunee Senior Center has special events set for noon on Wednesdays in April. On April 1, staff from Fox U.P. will answer your questions about buying or selling your car, and tips for making the most of the experience. Realtor Crystal Barr will present, “From Listed to Sold” on April 8, featuring information about how to get the most for your home when you’re ready to sell, and things to do to increase value in the interim.

Jesse Rosten from Superior Alliance for Independent Living (SAIL) will talk about exercise and its effects on Alzheimers on April 15. Musical Mealtimes continues on April 22, featuring a preview of Putnam County Spelling Bee, put on by PAAC. The production May 7-9 and May 14-16 at the Vista Theatre in Negaunee. A presentation about the upcoming Tiger Trip will take place on April 29. All programs are free and open to the public. For details, call 475-6266.

Social work intern graduating annah Chaperon, the Negaunee Senior Center’s 2014-15 social work intern, will be finishing up her placement here during the week of April 27. We are thankful for all of Hannah’s hard work at the senior center and assistance over the last eight months. If you see her in the next few weeks, make sure to congratulate her on her graduation. Hannah will attend USC graduate school in the fall for social work, and eventually move to Utah to be near her family.

Learn to ride MarqTran this month

L

earn to ride the MarqTran with Lindsay and Hannah. We recently learned that the MarqTran is thinking about discontinuing the Negaunee Shopper Shuttle route and we want to promote using the bus. If you have never ridden the bus before and want to boost your confidence on how, where and when to get on the bus, join Lindsay and

Hannah on Friday, April 10 or Friday, April 17. The bus loop takes about one hour and is wheelchair and handicapped accessible. This is a sponsored event, so we will cover the charge to ride for an hour and enjoy the trip. Call the senior center to reserve your spot and pick up location at 475-6266.

• The Negaunee Senior Center FootCare Clinic will be held on Tuesday, April 14 and April 28. Call the center at 475-6266 to make your appointment. The cost for the clinic is $15 and includes a foot soak, nail clipping and a foot inspection. Inhome service is available by calling U.P. Home Health at 475-4545. Thank you to U.P. Home Health for providing this service. • The Negaunee Senior Center Blood Pressure Clinic is held at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, April 1 and April 15. Blood pressure and blood sugar screenings are free. There is a $5 charge for cholesterol checks. We thank U.P. Home Health & Hospice for providing this service. • Grocery Grabbers will be held on Wednesday, April 1. Deadline to sign up is 2 p.m. on Monday, March 30 for the bus and meal. Marq-Tran picks residents up at Richmond Township Hall, travels to the Negaunee Senior Center for a meal, and then goes grocery shopping. Participants are dropped off at their homes and assisted with carrying their groceries. The bus will stop at Range Bank in Negaunee prior to going grocery shopping. Thank you to MarqTran for providing this service. • The Marquette Range Retired Steelworker’s Club will meet at 1 p.m. on April 15. • Do you have legal questions? The Negaunee Senior Center can help you find answers. Call 475-6266 to schedule an appointment. This service is free to any senior citizen in our service area; clinic’s are scheduled on an as-needed basis. • If a person is injured or becomes ill while at the Negaunee Senior Citizens Center and the illness or injury appears to be life threatening, 911 will be called. A family member or designated person will be notified. Responsibility for the ambulance charge is with the individual. • In the event of a power or other utility outage, the center must close for safety and health regulatory reasons.

April 1: Roast Beef Dinner

Moist, slow-cooked roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables and fresh bread.

April 8: Chicken Pot Pie

Flaky crusted chicken pot pie with mixed vegetables inside, served with fresh bread.

April 15: Turkey Dinner

Moist, slow-cooked turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables and fresh bread.

April 22: Lasagna

Homemade lasagna with meat sauce, garlic bread and salad with Italian dressing.

April 29: Chicken & Pasta

Hand-breaded boneless chicken breast served over pasta with marinara sauce, salad and garlic bread.

A limited amount of take-out orders are available by calling before 11:00 a.m. on the day of the lunch.

$5.75 for seniors, dine-in or take-out; $6.75 for the general public, dine-in or take-out

Lunches are homemade by our center staff and served on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to noon, or until sold out. If the center is closed on a Wednesday due to inclement weather, the meal will be held the next day we are open.
