Spring Plant Sale 2016 Annuals & Perennials Abutilon, Candy Corn or Chinese Lantern (Abutilon megapotanicum) Beautiful red and yellow lantern-like flowers dance on the arching stems of this unusual abutilon throughout the summer and fall. Left alone, it eventually grows into a 3’ tall and wide sprawling mound of color, but it is spectacular trained into a 3’ by 4’ tree form where the flowers can really show off! It responds well to pruning for a lush, fuller look. It likes full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Abutilon, Variegated Orange Abutilon (Abutilon hybrid) Beautiful cream-to-yellow variegated foliage with an orange flower displaying darker orange veins. A perennial that grows to 8’ in partial shade. It likes moist, well drained soil. Has a rangey, vine-like growth habit that can easily be trained into an espalier, patio tree, or large shrub. If the branch tips are regularly pinched out, it will maintain a more compact form and also produce flowers all summer. Agapanthus, Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus) Agapanthus is a landscape staple in warm-winter regions. This easy-to-grow perennial produces colorful globes of blue or white trumpet-shape flowers in summer and fall. Its evergreen strappy leaves add texture to beds, borders, and containers. Plant in full sun, well drained soil, and water regularly to keep plant moist. Spreads to 3’ wide in clumps and should be divided periodically. Airplane plant or Spider Plant, variegated or green (Chlorophytum) This plant is grown for its pretty foliage. It does bloom in late winter and early spring with small inconspicuous white flowers. It will grow 18-24” tall and has trailing growth when it puts on its baby airplanes or baby spiders. It likes part sun in moist, well-draining soil and is gorgeous in hanging baskets. All parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested. Aloe, Black Beauty (Aloe ‘Black Beauty’) Very attractive color for a succulent garden or container garden addition. Grows to 6” and 12” wide. Plant in sun to part shade. Drought tolerant. Small pink blooms in the fall. Begonia, Bonfire (Begonia boliviensis ‘Bonfire’) Exotic, brightly orange colored flowering perennial. It thrives in well-drained soil and can handle moderate drought, once established. Gorgeous in a hanging basket or container. Bleeding Heart, Red and White (Lamprocapnos spectabilis) Twining climber with heartshaped leaves and panicles of solid red or white “hearts” with a drop of red at the tip of each flower. Blooms all summer in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. May go dormant and return in the spring. Bulbine, orange (Bulbine fruiticosa “orange”) Bulbine forms 12” clumps of narrow green, onion-like foliage with small, star-shaped yellow/orange flowers. Very hardy evergreen, it likes medium water in well-draining soil and is drought tolerant once established. Canna Lily, Variegated Orange Flower Canna (‘Canna ‘Pretoria’) Plant in full sun and provide average water. Grows to 6’ in height. Showy yellow and green variegated leaves and bright orange flowers that bloom from mid-summer to mid-fall. Needs to be divided periodically. Carnation of India (Tabernaemontana divaricata) is an evergreen shrub grown for beautiful pinwheel shaped fragrant flowers. Native to India, Tabernaemontana’s leaves are dark green and pointed. The plant grows to a height of 4-6’ with spread of 6’. Prefers sun to part shade, average

water and good drainage. It is also known as Crape jasmine,butterfly gardenia and pinwheel flower. It can be grown in container easily. Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior) As its common name suggests, this plant is tough and will survive low light, infrequent watering and extreme heat. Great shade plant with glossy green leaves that make a nice mass planting or house plant. Grows slowly in a clump of dark-green leaves up to 2’ tall. Cat Whiskers (Orthosiphon aristatus) Perennial that grows to 2’ in height with delicate tubular flowers that have long, curved stamens that extend an inch or two past the petals, giving the long bloom spikes an attractive, whisker-like appearance. Blooms in the late summer through fall. Plant in part shade and do not let it dry out between waterings. Attracts Butterflies. Parts of plant are poisonous if ingested. Cleome, Senorita Rosalita and Mi Amor ( Cleome hybrid) Annual. Plant in full sun in landscape or large planter as the “thriller”. Grows to 4’ tall and 2’ wide. Pink blooms from spring through fall. Unlike other Cleomes, this plant has no thorns and does not reseed invasively. Coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) An easy annual to grow and propagate. Requires fertile, well drained soil and performs best in partial shade. Stunning foliage with a wide variety of leaf color, sizes and shapes. Mix a variety together in a garden bed or hanging basket. Some of the varieties included in our plant sale are Aurora Black Cherry, Green Lantern, and Painted Nettle. Crinum Lily, Red (Crinum) Aggie horticulturists claim that no Crinum has ever died. A must have bulb for the Southern garden. Plant in sun or light shade in wet or dry soil in spring or fall. Lovely, large red flower. Pinch off the old bloom and a new one will appear, blooming spring through fall. Over time the clump can be divided and shared with friends. Copper Canyon Daisy (Tagetes lemmonii) Also known as Lemon Marigold. Perennial shrub that grows to 3’ in height and spreads to 6’ wide. Foliage has a feathery, airy aspect to it and yellow, daisy-like flowers bloom spring through fall. Plant in full sun in well drained soil. Drought tolerant. Attracts butterflies. Cuphea, David Variety, orange (Cuphea, ‘David Verity’) A compact and more refined version of the standard cigar plant. It grows into an upright, very full plant with tiny foliage and is a nonstop bloomer with small tubular orange and yellow flowers, spring through fall. It is an incredibly tough plant and doesn’t seem to have any insect or disease problems. It is a great companion plant for the Mexican Butterfly Weed. It averages 5’ tall and wide. Likes sun to light shade in well-draining soil. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. Daisy, Black Foot (Melampodium leucanthum) A low, round and bushy perennial that grows to 12” in height and twice as wide. Abundant small white daisy-like flowers bloom spring through fall. Prefers sun or part shade and well drained soil. Great for rock gardens or in sandy soil. Daylilly, Apricot (Hemerocallis) In Brazoria County, plant in part shade in well-drained soil. Daylillies grow in clumps and make a nice border or group planting. One of the few routine maintenance chores for daylilies is dividing them periodically. Dianthus, Sweet Red (Dianthus barbatus) Biennial to perennial. Fragrant red flowers stand on long stems foliage. Great as cut flowers in an arrangement. Grows to 36” tall in full sun, welldrained soil and average water. Butterfly attractor. Duranta, Sweet Memory, purple (Duranta repens ‘sweet memory’) This fabulous long blooming root hardy plant forms a large, full, shrub and is covered with tight clusters of small purple flowers with a white edging in heavy bloom cycles late spring thru fall. It also produces

dangling clusters of yellow berries. A must for any butterfly or hummingbird garden! Prefers full sun but will take light shade. Grows 6-8’ tall and wide. Dutchman’s Pipe Vine (Aristolochia) Woody, twining vine that has very striking leaves and flowers shaped like a pipe. It is the host plant for swallowtail butterflies and is a great addition to any butterfly garden. Plant in full to part sun where soil is moist and well drained. Elephant Ear, Alocasia (Alocasia) Shade loving plant with large green or purple leaves. The more sun an Alocasia receives, the smaller the leaf. The higher humidity, the faster they grow. Plant where the plant receives morning sun and afternoon shade in rich, organic soil where it will receive regular watering. Dies back in the winter. Alocasia plants have stiff leave stems, (petioles), that extend into the leaves so that the leaves point upward. Elephant Ear, Colocasia (Colocasia) Large green or purple leaves distinguish this plant. The petioles connect down from the notches in the leaves so that the leaves droop or hang at an angle toward the ground. Prefers more sun than the Alocasia. Colocasia thrive in wet, fertile soil and can be grown in a bog or pond. Diamond Frost Euphorbia (Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’) Plant in partial sun in rich, moist soil with good drainage. Grows 1’ to 3’ in a 3’ clump. Apple green foliage covered with small white flowers year-round in Brazoria County. A great border plant or ground cover. Deer tolerant. Firecracker, Fountain Plant coral (Russelia equisetiformis) Multi-branching evergreen with 45’ long arching stems that have very small scale-like leaflets. Spring through fall branch tips have bright red tubular flowers and it prefers morning sun and afternoon shade in well-drained soil with regular watering. It may freeze to the ground in harsh winters but returns in early spring. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. False Freesia (Freesia Laxa) Small perennial that grows to 1’ in height. The scarlet blooms are small and similar to Freesia blooms and this plant blooms spring through late summer. Plant in sun to part shade and provide average water. Spreads to make a great groundcover. Firespike, red, (Odontonema strictum) Perennial, Red Fire spikes are evergreen with large, glossy, dark green foliage and red tubular flowers, growing 4-6’ tall and 24-40” wide. It likes full sun and average water. Attracts hummingbirds. Gaura, Pink (Gaura) Best grown in sandy soil with good drainage. Tolerates heat, humidity and some drought. Grows up to 3’ tall. Pink butterfly-like flowers bloom on spikes spring – fall. Geranium, Citronella (Pelargonium citronella) Summertime annual. Plant in full sun in fertile, well drained soil. Great container plant. Grows to 20” tall and blooms all summer. Intense lemon scent repels mosquitoes. Geranium, Vancouver Centennial (Pelargonium ‘vancouver centennial’) A tender perennial, vigorous and easy to grow with beautiful gold-bronze foliage and red-orange star shaped flowers. It grows 10-12” tall and 12-15” wide and likes average, well-drained soil. Attracts butterflies. Geranium, Ragtime (Pelargonium peltatum ‘Ragtime’) A beautiful geranium with colorful leaves shaped like ivy and small red, star-shaped flowers. Grows to 2’ tall in sun or part sun and well drained soil with moderate water. Shows off in hanging basket or as a garden border. Ginger, Ornamental (Zingiberaceae) There are a wide variety of ornamental gingers in the Zingiberaceae family that are perennial plants with creeping, horizontal or tuberous rhizomes. In general, gingers are evergreen perennials that prefer warm, humid climate and thrive in part shade. Gardeners enjoy the variety of leaves and large, often fragrant, showy blooms. Our sale includes a selection of gingers including Spiral, (Costus comosu) and Peacock, (Kaempferia rotunda) ginger.

Hibiscus, Hamabo Hibiscus (Hibicus Hambo) Pale yellow flower with a red center. Blooms late spring through fall. Plant in full sun and water regularly providing consistently moist soil. Do not overwater. Shrub or prune as small tree that grows up to 10 ft. Attracts butterflies. Hibiscus, Red Heart Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) Near white flower with red center. Blooms late summer through early fall. Deer resistant. Plant in sun to part-shade with room to grow up to 10’ tall and 4’ wide. Provide consistent watering to maintain a moist soil. Attracts butterflies. Iris, African Iris (Dietes) Plant African Iris in full sun or part shade, 2 to 3 feet apart, and fertilize about twice a year after establishment. After this, they will be tolerant of drier conditions. They will grow up to 3’ in height in a clump of sword-like foliage. Blooms last only a few days; however, one bloom spike will continue to furnish new flowers. Plant in landscape with Hamelia paten or Rosemary for a pretty, easy-care landscape combination. Iris, Louisiana Iris (Iris hexagona) Grow in full sun to part shade in wet soil. Works great in boggy, soggy garden areas. Lavender blooms spring through fall. These plants go dormant in the winter and burst forth in the early spring. Need to be divided periodically. Ixora, Variegated ( Ixora, ‘Thai Snow’) Perennial with shiny, glossy, showy foliage and near white bloom. Blooms late spring through early winter. Prefers full sun, average water and will grow 4-6’ in height. Lantana Lucky ( Lantana camera ‘Lucky’) Lantana hybrid that handles the stress of heat and humidity. Light white and yellow blooms glow spring through fall on mounding plants sized for smaller gardens and containers. Plant in full sun to part shade in well drained soil. Drought tolerant. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. Deer Resistant. Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) Host plant for the Monarch butterfly catepillars to consume, grow and develop. Plant in an area of the garden where you don’t mind having a plant where the leaves are stripped off by the catepillars in the spring and fall during migration. Watch for green/yellow and black striped caterpillars to consume the leaves and build their chysallis. Showy orange flowers. Butterfly attractor. Gold Star variety has all yellow flowers as an alternative to the traditional orange and yellow blooms. Night Blooming Jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum) Night-blooming jasmine blooms when the weather is warm, and its narrow, tubular, greenish-white blossoms only open at night. The flowers produce a strong, sweet fragrance that attracts moths and butterflies. Glossy white berries follow the flowers. It works well as a specimen plant or as a border shrub, or as a fragrant addition to a butterfly garden. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to part-shade and water regularly. Pentas Graffiti (Pentas lanceolata) Grown as a perennial in Brazoria County. Plant in full sun and provide moist, well drained soil. One of the best butterfly and hummingbird attracting plants that blooms all summer long with large clusters of starry flowers. Beautiful in a mass planting or a container. Deep red and fuschia blooms. Purple Mist Flower (Ageratum) Butterfly favorite! Flowering annual, that often becomes a perennial in Brazoria County, blooming from spring through fall. Dead-head blooms to encourage more flowers. Plants thrive in full sun, growing to 18” and require little care. Great for rock gardens and garden beds. Salvia ‘Amistad’, Friendship Sage ( Salvia’Amistad’) Medium-sized semi-shrubby perennial that grows fast during the summer to 4’ tall and wide. Plant in part sun to light shade in well drained soil and provide moderate watering. Glossy green leaves with whorls of large rich royal

purple flowers emerging from near black dark bracts. A showy plant that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Salvia, Wendy’s Wish (Salvia ‘Wendy’s Wish’) This Salvia hybrid is an evergreen perennial with compact growth to 3’ tall and wide. Foliage is mid-dark green leaves with serrated margins along dark maroon stems. Rising above the foliage are unique red tubular flowers with fluted tips. Plant in sun or part shade in well drained soil and provide medium water. Butterfly attractor. Shrimp Plant, White (Justicia betonica) Plants grow in many stemmed clumps with oval, light green leaves with bracts that hold many, tiny white flowers similar to the shape and texture of a gulf shrimp. Plant in sun to part shade in well drained soil. Likes humidity but don’t keep its feet wet. Blooms continuously providing lots of texture to the garden. Verbena, Homestead Purple, (Verbena canadensis) Vigorously spreading, deep purple clusters blooming June to November. It has deep green foliage with a spreading habit. Grows 10-12” tall and spreads up to 36” wide. It likes full sun in well-drained soil and occasional fertilization. Butterfly attractor. Verbena, Pink Heart (Verbena donalena series) Herbaceous annual, Donalena verbena series has clusters of star-shaped flowers. It grows 12” tall and spreads 18”. It likes well-drained soil, in full sun and does best in average to evenly moist conditions. Removing spent flowers after they fade and die will encourage more blooms late into the season. Does well in hanging baskets and container plantings. Butterfly attractor. Verbena, Hurricane Blue (Verbena, ‘Hurricane Blue’) A luxurious cascade of soft, textured foliage complimented by round clusters of bright flowers adds a splash of color to sunny, hot locations. Looks great in hanging baskets, spilling from mixed containers, or cascading over a wall. It likes well-drained soil, in full sun and does best in average to evenly moist conditions. Butterfly attractor. Wood Fern (Dryopteris) Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Prefers moist, rich, humusy, acidic soils with protection from wind. Grows to 2’ in height and width. Evergreen fern for a shady area. Texas SuperStars and Natives Bluebonnet, Henry’s Red/Alamo Fire (Lupinus texensis) Texas Superstar. Texas A&M Horticulturalists have developed this bluebonnet with a red flower. Once in bloom, some flowers will revert to their blue color and need to be removed before they seed to maintain the red flowers in next year’s growth. Annual that grows in full sun and well-drained soil to 12” in height. Columbine, Texas Gold/Hinckley’s Gold (Aquilegia chrysantha var. hinckleyana 'Texas Gold'). Texas Superstar. Grey-green foliage and bright yellow, lightly fragrant flowers on long stems. Spring bloomer. Prefers full sun in the winter and spring and filtered sun in the summer so plant it under the canopy of a deciduous tree. Grows to 24 inches and likes medium water and well-drained soil. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. Esperanza, Gold Star (Tecoma Stans) Texas Superstar. Heat-loving shrub with golden-yellow, bell-shaped flowers that bloom late spring through fall. Grows to 4’ in height to 3’ wide. Prefers full sun, well drained soil and average water. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor.

Hibiscus, Texas Star, red (Hibiscus coccineus) Native Texas evergreen that grows 6-8’ tall and has red flowers with 5 petals, like a star, all summer long. It likes moist, well-drained soil and attracts butterflies. Lantana, New Gold (lantana x hybrid ‘New Gold’) Texas Superstar. Low maintenance plant with golden yellow flowers. Drought and heat tolerant perennial that blooms from spring until frost. Prefers full sun and moderate drainage. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. Lantana, Dallas Red (Lantana x hybrid ‘Dallas Red’) Grows up to 2’ in height. Plant in full sun and water regularly . Blooms spring through frost. Butterfly Attractor. Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha) Texas Superstar. Tough, drought tolerant and highly pest resistant perennial with showy spikes of purple blossoms that appear in the fall. Prefers full sun and grows to 4’ in height and 3’ wide. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. Pentas (Pentas lanceolata) Texas Superstar. Very low maintenance tropical annual that often thrives as a perennial in Brazoria County. Plant in full sun or part shade in well drained soil. Grows to 24” in height and looks great in mass plantings. The Butterfly series is a Texas Superstar. Plumbago, White and Blue Cape (Plumbago auriculata) Blue Cape Plumbago is a Texas Superstar. White Cape Plumbago is slightly less vigorious, but its flowers appear to glow in the dusk. Plumbago prefers full to part sun with moderate drainage. Can handle hot, humid summers and blooms repeatedly. Butterfly attractor. Porterweed, Blue (Stachytarpheta cayennensis) Deep indigo 1/4" blooms adorn the long spikelike bloom stems from spring to frost above the rich green glossy foliage. Plant in full to partsun. Drought-tolerant. Great butterfly attractor. Salvia, Various Colors (Salvia gregii) Perennial Salvia that forms a 2’ by 3’ clump with bright color blooms spring through fall. Likes full sun to part shade in well-drained soil and low water. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Salvia, Misty Mountain Sage (Salvia miniata) Not a true Texas native plant and differs from other salvia’s because it prefers part-shade and will wilt in hotter spots. Can grow to 3’ in height with bright red flowers that may bloom year round. Plant in well-drained soil. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. Salvia, Henry Duelberg/Mealy Blue Sage (Salvia farinacea) Texas Superstar. Low maintenance, heat-tolerant Texas native that produces masses of showy blue flowers from spring until first frost. Prefers full sun and grows 3’ tall and 3’ wide. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. Texas Betony, Red (Stachys coccines) Grows to 2’ in height. Plant in full sun and provide average water. Leaves have a velvet, fuzzy texture and the plant blooms spring through late fall with scarlet, tubular blossoms. Trim it back or let it sprawl into a groundcover. Deer resistant. Hummingbird and butterfly attractor. Texas Firebush (Hamelia patens) Texas Superstar. Once established, a very heat and drought tolerant evergreen shrub that grows to 3’ in height. Blooms summer through fall with terminal clusters of scarlet red, tubular blossoms. Requires full sun and well-drained soil. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. Texas Lilac Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus) Texas SuperStar. Deciduous small tree with distinctive leaves producing profuse spikes of lavender flowers blooming heavily in early summer. Heat, drought and pest tolerant. Grows best in full sun and reaches a height up to 15’. Fast grower. Tunera, Yellow (Tunera subulata) Perennial evergreen with bright yellow 5 petal blooms that opens early in the day and closes by mid-afternoon, blooming spring through fall. Grows 24-30”

Turk’s Cap, red (Malvaviscus drummondii) Texas native flowering plant that grows 3-4’ tall and wide. Herbaceous perennial. Blooms spring through fall and likes sun to shade. Grows well in most soils and has low water requirements once established. It has small red fruit that birds and animals like. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Turk’s Cap, Pam’s Pink (Malvaviscus X Pam Puryear’s Pink) Native Texas plant and Texas Superstar, this variety of Turks Cap has beautiful pink blooms and small red berries that birds and animals like. Likes full to part sun, grows in most soils and has low water requirements. Herbaceous perennial that blooms spring through fall and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Roses Belinda’s Dream Rose (Rosa hybrida Belinda's Dream) Texas Superstar. Beautiful pink rose with 100+ petals to each bloom. Successive flushes of bloom from spring through fall. Grows to 5’ in height and width. Very hardy and low maintenance rose. Plant in full sun with good air circulation. Keep moist until well established and then requires average water through growing season. Marie Daly Rose (Rosa ‘Marie Pavie’) Texas SuperStar. Marie Daly is a pink sport of the renowned old garden rose ‘Marie Pavie’. Semi-double pink flowers that turn almost white in intense heat. Blooms early spring through fall. A good landscape plant that grows in a graceful, well-rounded form with few thorns. Requires full sun, excellent air circulation and average water through growth season. Tolerates saline irrigation using a drip irrigation system. Disease resistant. Grandma’s Rose (Rosa ‘Nacogdoches’) Texas SuperStar. Upright bushy shrub growing to 5’ tall. Deep yellow flowers with up to 25 petals blooming from spring through fall. Flowers have a light, spicy fragrance. Disease resistant. Plant in full sun with good air circulation and average water. Peggy Martin Rose (Rosa ‘Peggy Martin’) Peggy Martin, also known as the Hurricane Katrina rose, is a vigorous climber that can easily reach 15 plus feet. It bears clusters of pink shaded flowers that occur from spring through fall. Thornless with prickles on the backs of the leaves. Blooms repeatedly spring through fall with minimal care. Very disease resistant. Plant in full sun with plenty of room to climb. Tropicals and Succulents African Hosta (Ledebouria petiolata) Tolerant of both heat and drought, African hosta prefers light shade and well-draining but slightly moist soil. Since the foliage is deciduous and dies down in winter, the bulb is protected beneath the soil. A layer of organic mulch will help protect the bulb in areas of marginal hardiness. Propagation is by division, and clumps can be divided every few years or whenever they become crowded. Bromeliad (Bromeliaceae) A variety of bromeliads from local gardens are featured in our plant sale. The plants have thick, unusual foliage that grows in a natural rosette and are red or greenhued in color. Can grow outdoors in filtered light or indoors in a shallow pot with bright, indirect light. Most like heat and humidity and require little care. Commonly grown as a house or patio plant. Plant sale varities include Bromeliaceae Hechti and Cryptanthus.

Cereus, Night Blooming, white (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) Beautiful, fragrant, white, 7-10” open-faced blooms that open in late evening and usually in early morning. This succulent has large, bright green, flat, wavy-edged “limbs” about 2-3” wide and grows 6-7’ tall. Hardy in our area, in mild winters and likes filtered sunlight and dry conditions. Makes a great container plant. Crown of Thorns, red, pinks and yellows (Euphorbia milli hybrid) Slow-growing evergreen succulent with beautiful open-faced blooms and dark green or variegated leaves. There are several millis that range in size from 10-12” tall up to 12-24” tall: some with single flowers on each stem and some with clusters of flowers on their stems. Excellent container plants they like full sun and medium water. Also work well in the landscape. Kalanchoe, Red, Pink, Yellow (Kalanchoe) Perennial that grows 1-3’ tall and includes over 125 species. A favorite container plant for the house or porch because of it’s attractive, succulent leaves and clusters of brightly colored blooms that blooms any time of the year in bright light. Plant in well-draining potting mix and allow the soil to become dry between watering. Place in south-facing window or porch and keep plant above 50 degrees F. Kalanchoe, Speckled (Kalanchoe marmorata) A unique Kalanchoe with brown speckles on the leaves and white blooms. Moses-in-a-Boat Lily (Tradescantia spathacea) This plant’s flowers appear to be sitting in a small boat created by the long, sword shaped leaves giving the plant it’s common name. Plant in full-sun to part shade in moist soil with room to spread. Beautiful plant for rock or container gardens. May be used as a ground cover. Pencil Cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli) Interesting succulent for use in a succulent garden or as a house plant. Prefers full sun and good drainage. Can grow up to 6’. Take care when handling because this succulent has a milky white stem latex that can irritate the skin. Pony Tail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvate) Not a palm or a tree, but rather a succulent. Makes a great house plant in the winter and porch plant in the summer. Bulb-like trunk and lush, long curly leaves are striking. Easy to care for with bright, indirect light and regular watering, allowing soil to dry out between watering. Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) African tropical perennial that is stemless and evergreen. Prefers warm, sunny locations with protection from the hot afternoon sun. Distinctive leaves grow to 4’ tall in its native habitat. Make a great house or patio plant grown in a container. Water regurlarly in spring and summer a reduce water in the winter. Spotted Squill (Scilla) Drought tolerant tropical plant that can be grown indoors or used outdoors in xeriscaping or rock garden. Plant grows to 6” in height and has attractive, spotted leaves and a near-white flower that bloom in the spring. Wandering Jew, Variegated (Trandescantia zebrine) Perennial usually grown as a houseplant in a hanging basket or as a spreading groundcover in warmer climates like Brazoria County. Plant in part shade to full shade in well drained soil. Showy green and purple leaves with lavender purple flowers. Prefers moist soil. Wandering Jew (Callsia) Tropical plant that makes a good hanging basket. Plant in full sun to part shade and water regularly. Can be a patio or houseplant. Evergreen, interesting foliage and small white blooms. Wandering Jew, Basket Plant (Callisia repens) has larger leaves and is very showy in a hanging basket. Wandering Jew, Mini (Callisia fragrans) makes a great ground cover.

Trees Angle Trumpet, yellow, peach or double white flowers (Brugmansia) Root hardy tropicallooking small tree growing 6-10’ tall and wide. It is treated as a large, root hardy perennial that may or may not freeze depending on our winter conditions. It has magnificent 12” trumpetshaped blooms that hang downward. This is absolutely gorgeous at the back of the bed or as a major accent. It likes sun to part shade in well-draining soil. All parts of this plant are toxic. Banana Tree (Musa) Plant in rich, dark, fertile soil with lots of mulch and keep most. Useful for it’s fruit and makes a good windbreaker when several are planted together. Banana trees are not true trees, they are perennial plants that produce fruit within 9 months of growth. The mother plant dies and new plants grow from the rhizome. Fireman’s Cap (Erythrina bidwillii) Deciduous tree growing up to 30’ in height. Blooms bright red flowers mid-summer through mid-fall. Plant in full sun. Drought tolerant and suitable for xeriscaping. Plant has spines and sharp edges. Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) Bushy dense tree with large fuzzy deep green leaves. It blooms and sets fruit October to February. Produces clusters of pretty yellow oval fruit in spring and early summer. The fruit has a good flavor but has large seed and little flesh. It adapts to most soils and needs moisture at all times. It grows 15’ tall and wide. Morning Glory Tree (Ipomea arborescens) Large shrub that can be pruned to a small tree that grows up to 12’ in height. Plant in full sun to part shade in well drained soil. Drought tolerant. Blooms repeatedly and will bloom all year-round in Brazoria County. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Texas Lilac Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus) Texas Superstar. Deciduous small tree with distinctive leaves producing profuse spikes of lavender flowers blooming heavily in early summer. Heat, drought and pest tolerant. Grows best in full sun and reaches a height up to 15’. Fast grower.
