to San Anselmo’s longtime Town Manager Debra Stutsman!

Much to the chagrin of staff and residents alike, Debra (Debbie) Stutsman has announced that she is retiring at the end of February 2017 after 27 years of service to the town, the last 15 as Town Manager. Debbie has provided strong, steady and thoughtful leadership to our town, guiding our community through difficult financial times, through natural disasters and through many changes in elected leadership. She has made it a hallmark of her administration to make great efforts in communicating with the public through her weekly newsletter, through community events and activities, and by always being available to listen and respond to resident’s needs. It goes without saying that Debbie will be greatly missed. Please join the Recreation Department staff in wishing Debbie all the best in her retirement years. You will most likely be seeing Debbie around town joined by her every increasing number of grandchildren! Congratulations Debbie Stutsman!

PHASE ONE of the Memorial Park Master Plan has been completed! The community outreach conducted this fall has engaged hundreds of people and yielded a great deal of community input from a wide variety of residents of San Anselmo. This information will be analyzed and the results used to create conceptual design options for how the park could be improved to best meet the expressed priorities of the community.

PHASE TWO, which begins this February and carries through to late spring of 2017, will involve a review of proposed conceptual plans. The architects, after collecting and analyzing all of the public input, will create plans that meet as many of the expressed priorities as possible. The goal of Phase Two is to hear from the community which components of the conceptual plans best fit with the community’s vision for the park which will lead the process toward a final, preferred plan. This will culminate in a presentation to the Town Council. For more information and to review the latest updates for the Memorial Park Master Plan, please visit:

She has her Master’s and Doctorate degree in Science, and is currently working as Spanish teacher K-5th in St. Anselm School. Preschool

Soft pottery clay can provide a sensory party for toddlers! They like to poke at it, squeeze it, make marks in it, pick it up, throw it down and, in general, try to figure out what it can and cannot do. Toddlers find clay a little bit magical in the way it responds to their actions and so they are fascinated, motivated, and empowered to keep experimenting. “Painting” the clay provides another kind of experience and way to manipulate the clay. When toddlers are presented with their handiwork after it has been fired–well, let’s just say it’s empowering and creates a lot of smiles. No class 2/22 or 4/12. doodlebug Art Parties

Toddler Paint Play Painting is a way for children to convey ideas, express emotion, use their senses, explore color, learn “how things work”, and create artwork that pleases their aesthetic and, in some cases, ours! They can become thoroughly engaged and can build confidence in fairly rapid order. We try to make this class a true exploration, using a variety of paints, surfaces and methods of application. Carpentry for Kids

Clay (Pottery Wheel & By Hand)

This an afterschool program for K–6 designed to teach boys and girls practical woodworking skills with an emphasis on the safe use of hand tools. These skills include measuring, fractions, sawing, drilling, rasping, fastening, sanding, shaping, and assembly. In the process of learning these skills, students will have an opportunity to create fun, functional and beautiful projects, and will be exposed to a variety of valuable concepts such as abstract reasoning, applied mathematics, problem solving, craftsmanship, fine motor skills, respect for tools, and patience. No class 2/20, or 4/10. Location: Isabel Cook Community Center, Maker’s Den (1st Floor)

Working with and learning about clay can provide a myriad of benefits to the primary school student and, in this class, we try to find ways to leverage all of them. Sensory development and motor skills are just the beginning of the journey as students learn to prepare their clay and manipulate it to achieve the results they seek. As they make choices on the direction their projects take they build self– esteem and confidence in their ability to express their individuality. Another under–rated benefit is that clay can be a calming medium and working with it can be a thoroughly engaging experience. We’ll create a variety of projects using a variety of techniques and students will have the opportunity to glaze their pieces and have them fired. No class 2/23 or 4/13

Sewing Studies have shown that children between the ages of 6 and 12 are naturally interested in and benefit greatly from learning to sew. Turning 2–dimensional pieces of fabric into 3–dimensional objects can initially be daunting but learning sewing techniques in a considered way can provide the tools and inspiration to make the journey worthwhile and enjoyable. We’ll learn about basic stitching techniques (both by hand and with the machine), the nature of various fabrics and other materials and we’ll look a bit at fashion trends old and new to explore our own sensibilities and to demonstrate the scope of possibilities for stretching ones imagination. Cyber Garage

Today’s kids have grown up with computers, phones and gadgets that are closed and leave no room for tinkering or understanding the underlying technology. Piper computers have created the tools that will inspire and empower the creators of tomorrow to build, explore and tinker with technology, to help them invent the future. Students will be provided with everything they need to build their own Raspberry Pi computer, program the electronic controller and gadgets, and explore an educational Minecraft world through hands-on building.

Capoeira Ages K–5

Diego Freitas

Capoeira (pronouced ka–poo–eyh–da) is an AFRO–Brazilian martial art form that incorporated acrobatics, dance, percussion, and songs in a rhythmic dialogue of body, mind, and spirit. It is a communal game in which two opponents play each other inside a circle, formed by the other players who create rhythm for the game by clapping, singing and playing traditional handmade instruments. The two “capoeiristas” play a game together using Capoeira movements, camouflaging self–defense kicks with playful acrobatics and dance–like moves spontaneously creating a strategy to fool the other player and perhaps work together to build a beautiful, harmonic and naturally–flowing game.

Chess (Hidden Valley & Wade Thomas) Grades K–5 Bob Deutsch Through the medium of chess, you can learn critical thinking, problem solving, mental discipline, how to cope with winning and losing, and other skills that affect the learning experience in the classroom and in life.

Checkmate Chess (Manor & Brookside) Grades 1–5

Checkmate Chess

Various projects introduce and reinforce particular aspects of “playing” with clay. Scoring and slipping, adding texture, pulling shapes from clay, cut–outs and mixed media will be part of the process learning. We’ll also learn to bring our 2–dimensional ideas into 3–D form and our sense of scale and proportion will be refined as we look at faces and spaces. This is a bit messy but lots of fun. The projects will be fired and then glazed and re–fired. You’ll beamazed at how cool your artwork will be.

Earth, Moon, and Beyond Grades K–3 Beth Touchette We will begin our journey on our own planet Earth:  The instructor has lots of mineral, rock and fossil specimens for kids to  touch. Kids will get started on their own rock collections, and create plaster of Paris fossils. We will do some sun activities, and then we create a glow–in–the–dark moon. We will then construct a solar system and learn why poor Pluto is no longer included. Towards the end of the course, we will build a sputtering comet out of dry ice and sand, and learn about constellations and galaxies. Of course we will fire off a couple kinds of rockets and imagine what it would be like to journey into space. Small class size guarantees quality instruction.

Come on out and play the great game of non–contact flag–football with One on One. The program is for kids who want to exercise and enjoy playing. They will learn the rules of the game, positions, formations, and teamwork. While doing this they will learn good team play and have fun while doing it.

Flag Football with Coach Lee Grades 1–5 Lee Hassan My flag football program is designed to introduce young athletes to the game of football and show why it is so popular today. This is done by providing a safe, fun and lightly competitive environment for young athletes to both discover and develop the skills and techniques necessary to succeed on both sides of the ball.

Capoeira Capoeira with Mestra Sorriso (Karlon Kepcke) Capoeira is a beautiful and challenging art form. We can’t just call it a martial art or a dance because it is so much more. It is self defense, acrobatics, music, discipline and strategy. Capoeira challenges you physically, emotionally and mentally. Our approach to teaching is “you learn better while having fun”, so classes are held in a friendly, noncompetitive environment. San Anselmo TOWN NEWS

Flood Plain Management Many of our residents live in areas that are designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as in a flood plain. There are certain requirements if you live in a flood plain. If you have questions about living in a flood plain, or about a base flood elevation certificate, please contact our Public Works Department at (415) 258-4616 or [email protected].

Creek Care for Residents No matter where you live in Marin County, your actions influence our watershed and creeks. In Marin County, all storm drains flow directly to local creeks or the Bay without treatment. Washing your car, watering your lawn, and walking your dog can contribute to water pollution–or be done in a creek friendly way. The Marin County Pollution Prevention Program (MCSTOPPP) has a Creek Care Guide designed to encourage and support the ongoing stewardship of creeks in Marin County. This guide is divided into three sections. The first section defines healthy creeks, riparian corridors, fish habitat needs, the storm drain connection, and how to identify a potential creek problem. Guidelines for improving creek health are outlined in the second section. A resource directory is provided in the last section. The Creek Care Guide can be found at http://www.marincounty. org/~/media/files/departments/pw/mcstoppp/residents/ creek-care-2013.pdf.

Central Marin Police Crime Information Did you know that you can access information regarding crime trends in your neighborhood online? RAIDS Online’s public crime map works with law enforcement database systems to share crime data with the public through an easy-to-use online crime map and analytics dashboard. The data is displayed with 8 fields of limited offense information to protect victim privacy. This is a valuable tool for law enforcement to communicate crime activity to their citizens and the media. To view the crime maps, please visit RAIDS Online’s website: http://www.raidsonline.com/

Bicycle Registration Program from the Central Marin Police Authority Every year, hundreds of bicycles are stolen throughout the County of Marin. Often, it is impossible to identify stolen bicycles due to a lack of record keeping. Accordingly, the Central Marin Police Authority has instituted a Bicycle Registry Program. This free and voluntary law enforcement, community driven service is aimed at creating a local database so that in the event of loss or theft, the likelihood of recovery is increased. This is accomplished through accurate record keeping and theft awareness measures.

Zero Waste Marin Reduce your use of hazardous products! Zero Waste Marin encourages everyone to use less harmful and toxic products to clean your home and office. Use baking soda as a good all-purpose cleaner and vinegar to make your windows and mirrors sparkle. Look for less toxic or non-toxic products when you shop, or create your own less toxic cleaning recipes. Be aware of “green” or “eco-friendly” packaging as it is sometimes simply a marketing ploy to promote a perception of truly environmentally friendly products.

Here are a few less toxic alternatives: Brass Polish—Mix equal parts salt, white vinegar and flour to make a paste; let sit 10-15 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Chrome polish—Wipe with vinegar, then rinse and dry; shine chrome fixtures with baby oil and a soft cloth. Copper polish—Cut a lemon or lime in half, sprinkle with salt and rub onto copper. Diswashing/Hand washing—Use vegetable oil based liquid soaps. Dishwasher—Use low phosphate detergents and run only when full. Drain cleaner—For minor clogs, pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain followed by ½ cup of white vinegar; wait 5 minutes and follow with a kettle of boiling water. For serious clogs, use a plunger or a metal snake. For a complete list of less toxic alternatives, go to http://zerowastemarin.org/residents/zero-waste-101/less-toxic-alternatives/.

Town Council Meetings Televised The Town Council meetings are videotaped and streamed live via our website. This means that you can watch the meetings on your computer as they are happening! The live video can be found at http://www.townofsananselmo. org/index.aspx?nid=779, along with the staff reports for the meeting (identified under each agenda item with a paperclip icon). After the meeting, the videos are available on the website and linked to the staff reports, so that you can choose a particular item, click on it, and see the video for just that item. The meetings are also televised on local cable channel 27 Sundays at 9 p.m. If you would like to view the staff reports only, go to the above link and click on agenda. For each agenda item, there is a staff report link included, identified by a paperclip symbol. If you have any questions or have difficulty using the system, please contact Carla Kacmar at [email protected] or (415) 258-4660.

Registration services are currently available during regular business hours at both Central Marin Police facilities: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM--4:30 PM. Police facilities are located at 250 Doherty Drive, Larkspur and 525 San Anselmo Avenue, San Anselmo.
