SPORTS ARE BIG BUSINESS!

A competitive Request for Proposal was solicited with Midamerica Corp. being selected as the preferred proposal that also included a donation of 10.25 acres of property that is adjacent to our main transportation corridors. The facility will house two turf soccer fields, hitting and pitching cages for baseball/softball, 6 hard wood basketball/12 volleyball courts, meeting rooms, food and beverages services and more! It is anticipated that the facility will be completed in early 2017 and will attract sporting events from a four state region with an economic impact to our area that will exceed five million dollars annually once fully operational. Cape Girardeau is already a large sports magnet with many regional and state tournaments enjoying our facilities, our beautiful city, great accommodations and fabulous customer centered hospitality! general information

We are ringing in 2016 with much anticipation and excitement! I hope this finds you doing the same as we look forward to a new year of opportunity here in the City of Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri. Our City recently broke ground on a very large project the “Cape Girardeau SportsPlex”, a new indoor facility that is being built off of Limbaugh Lane adjacent to I-55 and Hwy 61. This new $12 million dollar, 120,000 sq. ft. sports mecca will be a regional draw for sports tournaments and events for years to come and is the result of much deliberation and research. Through a diligent feasibility study of four different tourism drawing facilities, our City Council selected an indoor sports complex as the project to help drive economic impact using funds collected from the restaurant tax through 2030. It is anticipated that the SportsPlex will be an even larger draw in our cooler months of November through March when outdoor activities are limited.

Josh Linderer was hired in August of 2015 as the Recreation Coordinator for Aquatics. Josh is originally from St. Louis, and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 2011. His hobbies include coaching sports, reading, and playing football and boxing. Josh has an extensive background in aquatics and is excited to work at Central Municipal Pool and Cape Splash.

This sprint triathlon consists of a 450 meter swim at Central Municipal Pool, and a 15.5 mile bike and 5 mile run throughout Cape Girardeau. First Tee Program

Cape Girardeau Parks & Recreation Department has a partnership with The First Tee of Cape Girardeau to offer this wonderful program in Cape Girardeau. The First Tee program aims to teach youth valuable life lessons using golf as a means to teach these lessons. The program consists of eight sessions. Who’s eligible to participate? Persons of all ages who are in special education classes, workshops, or who have leisure needs not met by traditional recreation programs are eligible. leagues What advice would you give a new coach wanting to coach for the first time?

COACH’S CORNER: MIKE PAYNE

What is your coaching background? Before changing professions, I coached high school baseball and basketball for five years. My next coaching was as a pitching coach for Cape American Legion for five years. Then I coached my son’s baseball teams for eight years and my daughter’s softball team for three years. Then I coached two grandsons in baseball and basketball for a total combined of 18 seasons. I also coached the St. Mary grade school girls’ basketball teams for 11 years. What makes you want to coach recreational sports? I love to see the progress that a young player makes in a season when they work at it and receive good instruction. Also, if you can make it work, I love to see kids who were mostly strangers at the beginning make new friends and come together as a team.

First, Practice. Most of the kids will like it better when you practice. It will help them progress as individuals and come together as a team. Second, try to be the first person at practice and games and try to make a positive greeting to every player that shows up. Let them know you are happy that each player is there. Tell them that. Tell them “we’re going to have fun” or speak about what a great day it is. Be positive. What philosophy do you believe works best in making parents happy with kid’s playing time? You have to be fair with every player on your team. Being fair, however, does not mean equal playing time when you are in a league that keeps standings. I believe that up though age 12 every play should play at least one inning on the infield every game. A player who cannot catch a ball should not play first, probably not third base, and definitely not pitching. It would be dangerous. If a kid always plays only in the outfield, I believe that player does not feel any ownership in the team. How important do you feel winning is at the recreational sports level? I absolutely believe trying to win the game within the rules is very important in recreational sports. We are trying to allow and help the players to get better. Wanting to win can be a great motivator toward that goal. We want the players to come together as a team. That task is made more difficult with a team that always loses. We are trying to teach players how to compete. That is a life lesson. Recreational sports are a great vehicle for learning that lesson. If you don’t care whether you win or lose, one of the great teaching opportunities that comes with team sports is lost.

Lo-Impact Aerobics

This class was designed for the active older adult, true beginner or people who may be limited physically. This class offers positive support, safe low-impact aerobics, music and fun. Zumba Gold was designed for the active older adult, true beginner or people who may be limited physically. This class is done at a much lower intensity than Zumba, although the same great Latin styles of music and dance are used.

Yoga

Various techniques will be used in this class with emphasis on flowing postures and breath awareness. Through basic yoga poses, participants will also work towards relaxation, mental clarity, and tuning in to their bodies.

RIPPED

H20 Boot Camp

HEALTH & FITNESS Combine low impact aerobics and high impact energy with four feet of water and watch the transformation. No matter what your age or fitness level, you can achieve total body fitness through aquatic exercises that strengthen and tone muscles and improve aerobic endurance. Fee: Participants can purchase a 12-class punch card, which allows them 12 visits to classes. There is no time limit for using the 12 punches.

Aqua Aerobics

This course is endorsed by the Aqua Fitness Professionals Association International (AFPAI) and taught by certified instructors. Cape Girardeau’s Park sites are a beautiful collection of active and passive lands which feature specimen trees; beautiful vista’s overlooking the Mississippi River (Cape Rock Park), heritage sites such as Fort D (a Civil War fortification) and the Cape La Croix Trail which winds it’s way from north to south along Cape La Croix Creek and through three of our major parks. Wherever you are in Cape, you are never too far from a park, trail or green space where you can experience nature or family fun. 1. Arena Park (Kiwanis Drive and Kingshighway) A 90 acre community park which contains the A.C. Brase Arena, 10 shelters, 60 picnic tables, 16 softball/baseball fields, four tennis courts, three restroom facilities, two sand volleyball courts, one basketball court, and one rugby court. 2. Capaha Park (Broadway and West End Blvd.) The oldest park in Cape Girardeau's system, the park is near Southeast Missouri State University and comprises 39.3 acres. It contains two baseball fields, one basketball court, three play structures, two restroom facilities, three shelters, one bandshell, the Rose Garden, and a 3.5 acre fishing pond. One of the baseball fields is home to the Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks and the Capahas, a semi-professional baseball team. 3. Cape Rock Park (North Cape Rock Drive) In the northeast part of the city, the 21.3 acre park offers a breathtaking view of the Mississippi River. It is mainly undeveloped in an effort to promote the natural area. 4. Casquin Park (North Sprigg Street) This is a 7.3-acre, undeveloped park. Blanchard Elementary is located just south of this park and Fire Station 3 is to the park's north. 5. Choctaw Park (Broadway and Kingsway Drive) Contains 1.4 acres and consists of one shelter and one play area. The park is along the Cape LaCroix Creek flood control project area.

6. City Hall Park (401 Independence Street) The park consists of 1.8 acres of green space. The park is behind City Hall. 7. Delaware Park (Sprigg Street and Lexington Ave.) An 18 acre undeveloped park. 8. Dennis Scivally (West Cape Rock Drive and Scivally Drive) This is a small neighborhood park with one shelter and one play area. The park features tall shade trees and a stately stone bridge over the Walker Branch creek. 9. Fountain Park (West of Cape Rock Drive) A small mini-park that contains a water fountain with golf fish to view, sitting benches and a picnic table. This park also contains a 1-mile trail that winds through the wooded area west of Cape Rock Drive. 10. Fort D (Fort street and Locust street) A Civil War Historic Site and the only remaining earthworks of the four originally built in Cape Girardeau. The site was designed by John Wesley Powell and the earthworks were constructed in 1861. 11. Groves Park (Jean Ann Drive) A 1.8-acre park consisting of one minishelter and one playground area. 12. Indian Park (William Street and Lorimier Street) This 1.9 acre park contains one mini-shelter, two basketball courts, and one play structure. Several summer basketball tournaments are held at this park.

Cape Rock 13. Jaycee Municipal Golf Course This course began as a 9-hole layout in the late 1970's. It now features 18-holes of Bermuda fairways and Bent Grass greens. Featuring hilly, tree-lined fairways, water on 11 holes, sand bunkers and architecturally designed greens, the course provides a challenge for all golfers. The course and all 18 greens are now open year round, from dawn to dusk weather permitting) after the highly successful rennovations in 2010. 14. Kiwanis Park (Rotary Drive off of Perryville Road and Lexington Avenue) The park is 55.8 acres and was acquired by the City in 1972. It has three shelters, one pick-up baseball field, one small pond, one play structure and one restroom facility. Home of Dogtown Dog Park. 15. May Green Garden (Fountain and Themis Street) This lovely park consists of a variey of flowers and plants. Wooden benches in the park allow for a leisurely rest in downtown Cape Girardeau. 16. Missouri Park (Fountain Street and Park Drive) The 6.3-acre park contains a half-basketball court, green space and the only skateboard park in the city. 17. Murtaugh Park (William and Main Street) A small green space (0.2 acres) located on a median across from the Old St. Vincent's Cathedral in historic downtown Cape Girardeau. 18. Osage Park (1625 North Kingshighway) Covers 52 acres and is the site for the Osage Centre and Cape Splash Family Aquatic Center. The Center is a multi-purpose building designed for conventions, meetings, special events, and sports activities. 19. Ranney Park (Ranney Street and William Street) One shelter and six picnic tables are located on this 1.2 acre neighborhood park. The new Mississippi Bridge route passes just north of this park. 20. Red House Interpretive Center (South Main Street at the intersection of Main and William) Historic Representation of Cape’s Founder, Louis Lorimier and his trading post. Tours and events May – September. 21. Riverfront Park (Water Street) On the river side of the flood wall, the park contains 1.5 acres with terraced seating for an amphitheater effect. This park is the docking site for the Mississippi River paddle boats and a hiking trail along the riverfront. 22. Rockwood Park (Rockwood Drive) 1.9-acre natural area that consists of outcroppings of limestone. 23. Shawnee Park Sports Complex and Center (State Highway 74 and West End Boulevard) This 131.2 acre park serves as the location of the Shawnee Park Sports Complex. 24. Twin Trees Park (North Cape Rock Drive along the Mississippi River) Located on the northern boundaries of the city, the park contains 61.8 acres. The hiking trail at the park established a partnership between the City of Cape Girardeau, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and Southeast Missouri State University for the purpose of providing a natural area for the public to enjoy. 25. Washington Park (Washington Lane and Middle Street) - A 3.3acre neighborhood park containing one shelter and one play structure.

Route “K” Connector connects people who want to walk or bike to the mall area shops and restaurants to the Cape LaCroix Trail and Kingshighway area. This trail is eight feet wide and starts/ends at Mt. Auburn Road and William and traverses William on the north side down to where it connects with the Cape LaCroix Trail by Cape Bicycle. A new pedestrian bridge was also added allowing crossing of the creek over the Schnucks/Kmart Shopping Plazing.

Riverfront Park Trail located on the Mississippi River banks flood wall just east of Broadway Street and Water Street has a 1.2 mile walking trail that travels along the Riverfront from Downtown Cape Girardeau north to Sloan Creek and the Isle of Capri Casino. Current plans include adding a bridge across Sloan Creek to the north and connecting with the Missouri Department of Conservations Red Star Landing.

Along with the Cape La Croix Trail system the City of Cape has two other sections of paved trails. The Bloomfield Road Trail is a 3/4 mile trail along Bloomfield Road starting at Stonebridge Lane to Benton Hill Road. There are plans to extend this trail another mile in the near future.

Starting in 1993 the City Of Cape embarked on a mission to develop a trail system throughout the city with the Cape La Croix Recreational Trail which is now up to 5.67 miles long and extends from the Missouri Conservation Department Nature Center property on the North end to the Shawnee Park Sports Complex on the South end.

Multi Purpose Paved Trails in Cape Girardeau

Share Cape Girardeau’s roads with all of our 2 and 4-wheeled neighbors. A grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health made it possible to add bike lanes to nearly 16 miles of city streets, but bicycles are welcomed on all streets. Adopt a Park

Looking to reserve a shelter in one of our city parks for a picnic or family gathering? Our shelters hold anywhere from 10 – 100 people depending on the location. You may reserve a shelter at the Parks and Recreation Main Office at 410 Kiwanis Drive at the A.C. Brase Arena located in Arena Park for the following park locations: Arena Park, Capaha Park, Dennis Scivally Park, Kiwanis Park, Indian Park, Choctaw Park, Ranney Park and Washington Park.

Did you know that your civic club, church or business organization can “Adopt a Park”? Yes you can!! The City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department and our Keep Cape Beautiful Committee is looking for interested groups who have a special connection to one of our City Parks or Trails and would like to be involved in improvement projects through out the year. At a minimum, we ask that interested groups help clean up your park or trail section at least four times per year. We will provide the equipment needed and recognize your group’s efforts! Plus, your name will appear on a sign posted within the park or on the trail. This makes for a great scouting project, a business team building opportunity or may fit the bill for your civic club goals. We have over 25 parks and miles of trails just waiting to be adopted. Commemorative Tree Program Here’s an opportunity to commemorate a special person or occasion while helping beautify the community at the same time. A commemorative tree can be given in memory or in honor of special people, groups, or occasions. Gifts of $300 or more will be used to purchase and plant a specified tree with an appropriately-inscribed memorial stone, which will be placed in the ground at the foot of the commemorative tree. Each stone will list the person, group or occasion that is being honored and the tree’s common name. Contact the Parks and Recreation Department for details.

Coming to a Community Garden Near You! Mr. Robert Harris, long time community garden advocate who helps oversee the community gardens at S. Fountain Street, Red Star, Washington Park and Shawnee Community Center is about to be published! Through a grant received by our local Cape County Public Health Department, Mr. Harris is excited to share his children’s book on the importance of helping our youth learn about the joys and health of gardening! Mr. Harris both wrote and illustrated the publication of which there will be a limited printing this winter just in time to get ready for the 2016 planting season. 920 Fort Street, off of Sprigg St., four blocks south of Rte. 74, Cape Girardeau Constructed in the summer of 1861 by Union troops under the leadership of John Wesley Powell, Fort D is the only remaining of four Civil War earthen fort sites that protected the City of Cape Girardeau from Confederate attack. The earthwork walls remain intact and historical signage throughout the fort’s grounds bring its storied past to life. The site also contains a limestone building that was constructed in 1937 as a federal WPA project. Admission Self-guided tours are free and can be taken during daylight hours, 365 days a year. Guided group tours of Fort D are scheduled through the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). projects Parks and Recreation Storm Water Projects Update - Summer CAPAHA PARK RIBBON CUTTING The City was excited to cut the ribbon on Phase 1 of the Capaha Park improvements on Friday October 23rd. What a great event this fall after many months of site work and construction; made all that more enjoyable by good weather and a large turnout of children who walked over from Franklin Elementary School and “A Small World Pre-school” to play on the new equipment. Parks and Recreation staff provided lunch after a ceremony which included the Mayor, City Manager, City Council and staff, plus members of the local Building Trades Union who provided manpower to complete the pavilion. The initial park master plan prioritized improvements with the first phase cost estimate of approximately $450,000. The improvements to Capaha Park are part of the Parks and Stormwater projects that voters approved in 2008 and also part of a phased master plan for one of the City’s

oldest parks which was established in 1915 when the city purchased “Fairgrounds Park” from the Fair Board at that time. Future improvements include a new restroom and splash pad to be located adjacent to the playground, Stormwater improvements to the lagoon and improved parking, access and seating to the Dan Cotner Amphitheatre. In addition, the City is looking to partner with Southeast Missouri State University on improvements to the baseball stadium, home of the Redhawks.

GROUND BREAKING FOR NEW INDOOR SPORTS COMPLEX

The groundbreaking for Cape Girardeau’s new indoor sports complex was held Wednesday, Dec. 9 on location at 583 Limbaugh Lane in Cape Girardeau. The Cape Girardeau City Council, MidAmerica Corporation, Penzel Construction and City Parks and Recreation staff celebrated turning the dirt to kick off this new and exciting project which will have long term economic impact for the region. It is anticipated that the sports complex will open in early 2017 and the City anticipates drawing sporting events and tournaments from at least a four-state area which will increase hotel night stays and visits to local restaurants and retail, especially during the cooler months of November through March. The sports complex will house two indoor turf soccer fields, six hardwood basketball courts which will convert to 12 volleyball courts, indoor pitching and batting cages, meeting rooms, food/beverage services, offices and more. The sports complex facility was one of several economic development and tourism projects reviewed by a committee in 2014 including a conference center, agritourism facility, and an indoor aquatics facility. To determine the best use of restaurant tax revenues to be collected through 2030, the committee conducted a feasibility study and several public meetings. Ultimately, the Council accepted the sports complex recommendation and staff opened a competitive bid process for the project.  Midamerica Hotels Corporation submitted the winning proposal partnering with Penzel Construction for a $12 million project which includes the design and construction of a 120,000 square-foot facility on 10.27 acres donated by Midamerica to the City. KIWANIS PARK PLAYGROUND PROJECT

As we were completing Capaha Park Phase 1 improvements we were designing our next Parks and Stormwater scheduled project which will be at Kiwanis Park. Currently scheduled will be a replacement of Shelter 2 near the dog park with improved parking, sidewalks and landscaping along with a complete playground replacement at Shelter 3 in the center of the park with improved sidewalks, a new handicapped accessible swing, new furnishings and landscaping. Demolition of the old shelter and playground will take place this winter with new construction starting in the early spring with completion scheduled for this summer weather permitting.

The survey says… PARKS & RECREATION MASTER PLAN SURVEY RESULTS This past summer the Parks and Recreation Department provided opportunities for the community to provide feedback through an on-line survey regarding their satisfaction with our facilities, programs and events along with what they would like to see in the future. Here is a summary of what you told us:

★ The majority of the respondents feel that our programs and facilities are affordable so we were glad to see that! We will always try to keep our programs as reasonably priced as possible.

★ Capaha is your favorite park closely followed by the Cape LaCroix Trail, Cape Splash and many of you love the Dogtown Playground among many others.

★ When asked about improvements you told us that you would like us to focus on Arena Park and the Central Municipal Pool, two of our aging facilities so that is understandable. You also would like to see the Osage Centre enhanced mostly from a fitness perspective.

★ The majority of our respondents reported visiting a city park at least weekly and that the majority of our respondents feel that the City provides convenient and quality parks.

★ Many of you when asked what are the most important improvements that you would like to see you told us less temporary restrooms or “port-a-potties” and we do understand this.

★ When asked what new parks you would like to see, you were all over the board with ideas such as skateboard park which was mentioned frequently (in progress), expanding and widening the trail which is in our master plan for PRS2 and also parks where smaller children could play. We will post a summary of these results at a later date.

★ Regarding our trail system, the majority of you reported that you use the trail for Fitness and Exercise with the next largest being for Recreation and Enjoyment with a fairly large percentage across the board desiring more trails that are wider, lighted and that have nicer amenties.

★ When asked about your favorite program, you listed many favorites that you felt were good quality and that were a variety of options for all ages; some of the top selections were the fitness programs, youth sports programs, the Pirate and Mermaid Party at Cape Splash, and the Municipal Band Summer Concert Series, to name a few. You also said that you participate in these programs year round from weekly, monthly to several times per year. A number stated that you NEVER participated...if you are out there let us know what we can do to get you involved!

PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD Brenda Newbern was born in Cape Girardeau. She graduated from Cape Central High, Southeast Missouri State and American School of Real Estate. Ms. Newbern says she will forever be a “Tiger”! Her love for sports and the outdoors was culminated during her years at Central. She is an avid walker and loves the way the Parks and Recreation Department has embraced the walking, biking and development of parks and outdoors venues to encourage people to get out and get moving! Our City has the amenities in our parks and riverfront

trails that you find in the larger cities that must develop green space, but Cape Girardeau is embracing green space. Working with the sports teams that come to our area made being a part of the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board a natural fit for me. I am excited about being able to impact the current developments and sharing ideas for the new facilities that are on the horizon. My challenge to those reading this is to “get out and get moving”, and if you already do: find a friend and take them along! After that they will just want to spend time out in the beautiful parks of Cape Girardeau. My belief is that sitting by the water fronts, splashing in the pool or walking will keep me close to God, clear my vision and healthy for myself and my family! So again I say to you “GET OUT & GET MOVING”! Enjoy the parks of Cape Girardeau, Mo!

Registration deadlines

All programs have a minimum enrollment. Pre-registration is required prior to start of program unless otherwise noted.

Cash, check, money order, debit, or credit cards accepted. Give the gift that keeps giving and recreation all year round. You can purchase a gift card for any amount at the A.C. Brase Arena or Osage Centre.

Photo Policy

Our staff may take photos of you or your child participating in recreational activities. These photos could be used in future publications. If you do not wish to have your photo published, please inform the photographer.

Refunds

We reserve the right to cancel a program if sufficient enrollment is not achieved. Full refund or credits will be given if this occurs. Refunds are granted in the following cases:

• If participant withdraws three days prior to the first class, full refund is given. • If participant withdraws after the first class, prorated refund is given. • If participant must withdraw due to illness or injury a prorated refund is given. • No refunds after class is half over. • Refunds for memberships or trips will be made on a case by case basis. Refunds will follow the Finance Department bill-paying schedule and be issued by city check. Allow three weeks for processing. There will be no cash refunds. Payment by credit or debit card will be made accordingly.

Weather Related Cancellations Occasionally, classes or leagues are cancelled due to weather. Phone calls will be made to parents or team managers if a cancellation occurs.
