Spring 2015 Catalogue
INTRODUCTION
My Calling The name NOBILIS is Latin for NOBLE. It comes from the Indo-European ‘gno’ meaning knowledge. Knowledge, with respect to world wine culture, was largely developed by church monks. Prior to the monks’ involvement, commodity wine dominated medieval Europe: it had the advantage of being safer to drink than water and cheap to produce — a great product for the masses. The monks’ refined production practices and evolved a second ‘tier’ of wine. If this ‘tier’ is more special and distinct than commodity wine, it is because it is perceived as being more ‘cultural’ representing all that is present and available for elaboration within a given community. The theory then and still today is that ‘wine as culture’ represents the complexity of a wine’s unique identity. The objective is the creation of a ‘naturally made and uniquely stamped’ wine that reflects the culture of its place. Here, in the 21st century, is where Nobilis Wine Importers enters the picture. At Nobilis we believe there is a small but very important market for ‘authentic, cultural wine’. We believe it is important that producers and their products in this tier are enjoyed and celebrated for their uniqueness. Many of these producers and their products could be considered part of the ‘slow’ movement — products which are often organic or naturally made, products which have clear and identifiable qualities and are mostly a reflection of their culture and tradition. Some are very expensive; some are not. Our focus is to find and bring these products to you — a group of like-minded and dedicated clientele in Alberta.

SAVIGNY 1ER CRU "LES GOUDELETTES" WHITE The 1er Cru vineyard of "Les Goudelettes" is located on the top of the hill overlooking the village of Savigny and facing "La Montagne de Corton" . Growing on a soil composed of limestone and clay, the wine will spend 14 months in barrel before being bottled. Aromatic, precise and delicate, the wine is closer in style to a Puligny than to its prestigious neighbour Beaune Clos des Mouches. Robert Parker loved it and gave it a 90 pts.

CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET BLANC
The vineyard of Chassagne is slightly larger than its neighbour Puligny, covering around 300 ha. The production of red wine from the Pinot noir (concentrated in the southern part toward Santenay) represents a third of the appellation. Chassagne shares two Grand Cru appellations with Puligny (Montrachet and Batard Montrachet) and ads a new one: Criots Batard Montrachet (1.57 ha). Noel Ramonet's Grandfather, Pierre, was one of the first to pioneer his wine to North America. They have developed a very loyal clientele and their wines have become very difficult to find.

PULIGNY MONTRACHET WHITE The entire vineyard of Puligny-Montrachet covers only 207 hectares producing around 100,000 cases a year. In comparison, many Bordeaux estates are over 80 hectares (Mouton, Camensac). The vineyard producing almost exclusively from the chardonnay grape is divided between four grand Crus (30 ha), 17 premiers Crus (88 ha) and the remaining in village appellation. The wine is rare and the best producers pre-sale all their wine. Due to the quality of their wine, based on purity and precision, Maison Etienne Sauzet is in very high demand and we are proud to be able to import each year a few cases.

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU "CLOS LA PERRIERE" Without question this rare wine is the most complex appellation of Meursault. The vineyard, on the same slope of " Le Montrachet" covers only 1 hectare and it is entirely surrounded by a wall. The vine roots their way through flat calcareous stones and thin soil to quickly reach the parent rock, rich in complex nutrition. The wine is often compared to Batard Montrachet and every specialist would elevate it to the Grand Cru Status.

CHIROUBLES Chiroubles, one of the 10 appellations of the Crus Beaujolais (besides St Amour, Chenas, Julienas, Moulin a Vent, Fleurie, Morgon, Brouilly, Cotes de Brouilly and Regnié) has the particularity to have the highest (450 meters) vineyard. Very hot and dry during the day, the temperatures drops down at night and a 20-degree/ day fluctuation is not rare during summer. At its best three years after the vintage, the wine is fruity, delicate, and reminiscent of wild, red fruits.

Until the French Revolution, the Abbaye played a crucial role in the development of the region. Abandoned, she was purchased by the Comte de Turenne in 1838, but it is not before the early 1980's that a descendant, Philippe d’Alaisnes, started to renovate the old building and 65 hectares of vineyard. BORDEAUX
La Passion des Terroirs www.lucienlurton.com It was in 1993 at the annual Banff Spring Wine festival that I first met Gonzague Lurton, owner of Durfort Vivens. He told me that his father Lucien had just created a new company with all of his 10 children to manage and promote the 11 or 12 estates he had purchased over a lifetime! Gonzague was (and still is) reserved, precise and passionate about his estate and his wine. During my numerous visits to Bordeaux, I met all the family, all sharing the same passion for their terroir’. SELECTION

Chateau les Croisille www.lescroisille.com It is only in 1979 that Bernard and Cecile Croisille decided to first rent a very well exposed 30 hectare piece of land located in the village of Fages, in the heart of the Cahors appellation. Recognition did not come before the mid nineties but Divin Croisille is today part of the Elite receiving the coveted stamp “Charte de Qualité.” The first step to the one-day, appellation “Grand Cru.” SELECTION

CAHORS LE MAS DES ETOILES Arnaud and David are developing with their wine, a line of three different styles. The entry level "Petite Etoile" (little star) is a juicy Malbec, while "Une Etoile est nee" (a star was born) represents their top level with a powerful wine, which spent two years in new French oak barrel. We have selected the "Mas des Etoiles" (home of the stars). For me, it represents the quintessence of Malbec: a rich dark fruity wine where the blackberry dominates all supported by silky tannin!

MALBEC GAUDOU If you like the Argentinean style Malbec, then this one from Cahors, the native region for Malbec, will pleasantly surprise you. The wine benefits from the very recent appellation (August 2009) Vin de France. Fabrice Durou has carefully selected rich grapes from young wines growing in the Lot valley. Somehow treated like Beaujolais with carbonic maceration and cold fermentation, the wine is based on the fruity characteristics of the Malbec, forgetting the harsh tannin and the high alcohol content. A great companion for every day every meal and any friend!

QUART DE CHAUME L' ECHARDERIE Quarts de Chaume is a sweet wine affected by the same Botrytis Cinera as one finds in Sauternes. However, the terroir of the Loire Valley and the Chenin Blanc grape yields a sweet wine that is lighter on its feet, more touched by acidity, but equally age worthy. "Lightly melted marshmallow and yellow flowers present with grace on the palate, the floral bouquet is ever evolving. Apricot acidity heralds a gorgeous, balanced dessert wine for soft Brie and goat cheese with honey. Clos du Paradis 2008 is so good I quoted it an icon." -Astor, New York City.

COLHEITA PORT Colheita Port is a vintage dated member of the tawny port family. Colheita literally means ‘crop’ or ‘harvest’, but is better understood as ‘vintage’. The style should not be confused with vintage port, as Colheita Port must spend at least seven years in wooden casks, though barrel ageing of 20 years or more is common practice. During this time, the fortified wine undergoes oxidative ageing, bringing it more in line with an aged tawny than any other style of port.

Quinta do Infantado www.quintadoinfantado.com João Roseira and his sister Catherine run this beautiful estate once owned by the Prince (Infantado) of Portugal. They believe in natural products (it is a chemical free farm). They obtained the stamp Organic wine in 2009. For João, it is important to make the ports in lagares (open stone vats where the grapes are crushed by foot); it gives the old style elegance that a stainless still tank will never achieve. Thanks to the lagares, the deep-coloured ports are obtained by a very high ratio of skins to must. At Infantado, the brandy addition is a partial process that takes place in the lagar. In the absence of any cooling, doing it bit by bit prevents the temperature rising and damaging the fruit. It also causes the yeast to work more slowly and facilitates an enhanced extraction from the skins. SELECTION

MADAGASCAR
Dzama - Rhum from Madagascar www.rumgallery.com Everything begins in the early eighties; a sugar cane alcohol, produced on Nosy Be Island, interests Lucien Fohine. He discovers that the refinery settled on this island produces an alcohol with unique and persistent flavours. He deduces that it is due to the roots of ylang-ylang entangled with those of the cane, and to the aromas of clove trees, pepper plants and vanilla, which grow in abundance in the region. . In real precursor, he implements the idea which is going to revolutionize the market of the rum in Madagascar: he makes his rums mature in the oak barrels in which the Scottish distillers send him the scotch whisky he buys to distribute on the Big Island. Rum DZAMA is born from this passion, and has become the n°1 in Madagascar. SELECTION
