Ave verum Corpus (Hail true presence)

I Am the Good Shepherd was first performed at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles, California, on April 29, 2012, Frank Brownstead conducting the cathedral choir, Samuel Soria, organist. Simon, Son of John, Do You Love Me? received its premiere performance at St. Peter’s Church on Capitol Hill, Washington, District of Columbia on June 29, 2012, Kevin O’Brien, organist-choirmaster. These two lush works feature words from John 21:15–19 and 10:14–16, respectively. Each edition features substantial program notes by the composer and the texts as printed matter.

In addition to the well-known 14th-century Eucharistic hymn in Latin, this moving setting features a new English (singing) paraphrase by Richard D. Leach (b. 1953). Medium

Kyrie eleison

Locus iste

Kyrie eleison uses both Greek and English versions of the Kyrie text. The score calls for a three-manual organ. With skillful registration, however, the piece is feasible on a two-manual instrument. This edition includes a brief harmonic analysis by the composer.

If you are looking for a modern-day alternative to Bruckner’s masterful setting of this traditional Latin text, then Henry Mollicone has supplied one with fresh harmonies and melodies. Medium

Let Thy blood in mercy poured John Brownlie wrote the text which the composer employed in this devotional work: “Let Thy blood in mercy poured, Let Thy precious body broken, Be to me, O gracious Lord, Of Thy love the token. Thou didst give Thyself for me, Now I give myself to Thee.”

The fact that the text for this work even exists is a miracle. It was written by Abraham (“Abramek”) Koplowicz, a Jewish boy who was exterminated by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Abramek was born in 1930 in Lodz, Poland, and died 1944 in that country’s infamous concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He wrote this poem during the time that his family was trapped in the Lodz ghetto. This poem was not found until 1983 when Eliezer (“Lolek”) Grynfeld, the poet’s half-brother, discovered it among their late father’s belongings. Children who sing this work will be transported on a magical flight around the world through time and space along with their audiences. The edition includes a detailed biography of the poet and pictures from his life. Moderately Easy

Blessings from the Children

SECULAR CHORAL— WOMEN & GIRL’S VOICES GWYNETH WALKER

Words of Strength Words of Strength takes the form of a dialogue between the generations. Young women turn to the adult women for the knowledge and experience to overcome difficult times. “I have no confidence. I am frightened. I am lost.” The women answer by singing verses of I’ve Got Peace Like a River. The generations alternate in their singing, with the younger voices joining the adults as the message becomes clear. By the end, the two choruses sing together: “We can find the words to build a life of hope.” Medium

CONNOR KOPPIN 19

Connor Koppin’s setting of i carry your heart uses only a few short lines from E. E. Cummings’ poem of the same name in a mantra-like fashion. The phrase, “I carry your heart with me” is repeated a number of times using different textures, harmonies and voices, thus reenforcing the idea of intertwining two souls into one. Men’s and women’s voices are often at odds in this setting and come together only in moments of absolute unity. Part of the Lee Nelson Choral Series.

Faery Songs These four publications all share a mournful mood: Faery Songs is a diptych on texts by John Keats (1795–1821); A Farewell! and Tears, Idle Tears both feature words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892).

Completed in August 2007 by the now late Conrad Susa, the exquisite Serenade is composed to a text drawn from the poems of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882). It is dedicated to Philip Brunelle and the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers. It is they who we hear performing The Evening Star on this track.

i carry your heart

GREGORY J. HUTTER

20

How do I love thee? This sensitive piece is a setting of the well-known poem How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43) by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861).

The composer set this same poem years earlier as part of a song cycle (Four Madrigals of Michelangelo, high voice, violin, and piano, #5447, publ. 2001). The poetry is from the Complete Poems and Selected Letters of Michelangelo, translated into English by Creighton Gilbert. Like its companions in the aforementioned song cycle, the text for this new choral work employs “eyes” as its central theme. As Professor Gilbert pointed out in the foreword to his book, in the Renaissance, eyes were perceived as the most spiritual element of the human body, and the window to the beloved’s soul. Ocean Dance

Sweet Freedom is based on music from America (My country, ’tis of thee) and words by Samuel Francis Smith (1808–1895) as adapted by Gwyneth Walker.

Ocean Dance is a fun piece. This is a fun piece. The sophisticated and witty text is about the dance of undersea life. The text is by talented writer and conductor Robert Bode. As a conductor, Dr. Bode is best known as the director of the Seattle-based ensemble Choral Arts, whom he conducted in the performance of Ocean Dance on this track.

RONALD PERERA

Caprice Variations

Hymnos

The arranger’s transcription includes 20 of the original 51 caprices. She chose to include those best suited to the flute while representing the enormous stylistic range of Rochberg’s entire set. Her goal in the transcriptions was to use the flute to its fullest capacity, challenging the player with dynamic, technical and stylistic extremes: the range of these variations goes from a B1 to an E4 and from pppp to ffz! She made minimal breathing and metronome suggestions, adding these only when they seemed most important. In George Rochberg’s Afterword to the Performer, he permits omitting some of the repeats and variations to suit the length and artistic discretion of the performer. However, he advocates for balance in preserving “the stylistic spread which is a fundamental premise of this work.”

The ancient Greek word “hymnos” gave us the Latin word “hymnus” and the English word “hymn.” Hymnos is replete with many wellknown, well-loved hymn tunes including Michael, Star in the east, All my hope on God is founded, Love divine, all loves excelling (Hyfrydol), Amazing grace, Jesus shall reign where’er the sun, Holy, holy, holy!, Ye watchers and ye holy ones, and Jerusalem, my happy home. Organist Grant Moss gave Hymnos its premiere performance in a recital at Christ Church Cathedral, Springfield, Massachusetts, on October 20, 2013.

Elegy Elegy was commissioned by organist Douglas Cleveland. It is a one-movement work in a lyrical, meditative style. Its harmonic language is French-influenced, but the composer considers the piece primarily melodic. Although Elegy is not a programmatic work, it is based on musical materials that are varied throughout, and suggested to the composer a restive, pastoral setting. Medium

Sonata da Chiesa

Triptych for Harpsichord Triptych for Harpsichord was composed in the spring of 2000 for harpsichordist Tatiana Zenaishvili. Ms. Zenaishvili gave the world premiere of the work in a concert in Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, Russia on January 25, 2001. She subsequently performed the American premiere at a concert in Lutkin Hall in Evanston, Illinois on April 17, 2001. Triptych for Harpsichord employs formal concepts which were commonly used in harpsichord works of the 17th and 18th centuries—toccata, variations and fugue—but no attempt was made to simulate a baroque musical style. The theme upon which the second movement is based is an old, Russian folk song. The variations have maintained the tonal style of the original melody. The fugue subject used in the third movement is based on a theme introduced in the toccata movement. Difficult

The Saints Sing “Hallelujah!”

Jubilate Deo

Rejoice in the Lord Alway

Arranger David Frost, who has for years been the Principal Librarian for the Columbus (OH) Symphony Orchestra, has stumbled upon something that is both clever and funny. He discovered that Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus and the traditional Gospel tune When the Saints Go Marching In share some musical elements, so he combined them. The resultant piece will provide a good time for both performers and audiences. Great as an upbeat concert closer or encore number. Paul Gibson has taken this well-known choral piece and done something wonderfully unexpected with it by assigning the entire piece to a Chorus 1 part, and adding a newly composed Chorus 2 part in the style of that era to create an eightpart piece! His setting is also very versatile in that the Chorus 2 part may be performed in any one of three ways: as an organ reduction, as a brass quartet transcription, and as an SATB chorus. SATB a cappella Sanctus/Benedictus (Latin text only). Very melodic and appealing. Matthew 2:9

Gwyneth Walker

SATB a cappella

SATB and Keyboard or Brass Quintet Presented in a straightforward manner, similar to a processional. The block chords in the brass evolve into fluid lines to usher in the verse “Ye winged seraphs fly.” Harmonies in this setting are purposely open and sparse, within a folk idiom.

SAB a cappella Intricate arrangement of PASSION CHORALE, with original treatment of each verse. A subtle key change underscores the change in tone for an inner verse. The final verse places the tune in augmentation for men’s voices (opt. divisi) and ends forte on octave Gs. Text includes several stanzas not often included in hymnals.

To Live Is Christ Leo Nestor

Soprano Solo, SATB, and Organ Based on Philippians 1:20b-21. “We could easily construe its use for late in the Easter season. It “is a...simple work, gently propelled by near-constantly migrating harmonies, alternations in the choral fabric, frequent changes in organ color, quietly repeating legato choral chords and most designedly by the consistent use of motion in chorus and/or organ until the repose of the final measures...” -Leo Nestor.
