SPRING 2012

CREDIT/NO CREDIT The credit/no credit option is available within the approved guidelines of each school. Please review the specific guidelines for each major to determine eligibility of courses to be taken for a credit/no credit grade. NOTE: Students must receive a letter grade for all courses taken to fulfill general education requirements. Courses taken with a credit/no credit option do not fulfill the requirements of the general education curriculum. The credit/no credit option may only be selected from the time of pre-enrollment for the semester until the final day to drop courses without a transcript record (see academic calendar). Once this deadline has passed, the option to request a credit/no credit grade is forfeited. A student must earn a “C-” or better to earn credit in the course. Students must obtain permission and the signature of the instructor in whose course they wish to earn a credit/no credit grade. The instructor has the right to refuse students the option of a credit/no credit grade. A separate credit/no credit request form is available from the Registrar’s Office.

AUDITING COURSES An Oklahoma City University student may audit a course (excluding courses offered by the School of Law) by attending class sessions and completing classroom assignments. No examinations are taken and no credit is given. The student transcript carries the designation “AU”. The “AU” designation, once recorded on the transcript, may not be changed to a letter grade. Audited courses do not satisfy degree requirements. If a student determines that an audited course is needed to fulfill a major requirement, the student must repeat the course and earn a letter grade. A student may audit only if permitted by the appropriate school or department policy and on a spaceavailable basis. Students may not audit individualized academic experiences such as internships, directed study, independent study, music lessons, dance instruction, etc. Audited courses will not be considered in a student’s normal semester load. Procedure: The audit option can only be selected through the second Friday of the regular semester and through the first Friday after four class days of a summer session. Once the add/drop period is over, the option to audit a course is forfeited. Students must obtain permission and the signature of the instructor whose course they choose to audit. An instructor has the right to refuse to permit students to audit a course. Students registered to audit a class are not guaranteed a space until after the drop/add period. A separate audit form is available from the Registrar’s Office. Fees: Students will be assessed a non-refundable audit fee. Fee schedules are available from Student Accounts Office. Audit fees are not considered part of the structure for block tuition charges and will be assessed in addition to regular tuition charges.

REPEATED COURSES Graduate and Undergraduate policies concerning repeated courses differ. Please consult the appropriate catalog for more information on the repeated course policy for your career.

CHANGES IN REGISTRATION For the Fall and Spring semesters, courses may be added through the first Friday after four class days of the semester without instructor approval. Courses added after the first Friday after four course days and through the second Friday after nine class days may be added only with instructor approval. Courses may not be added after this date. For the first and second summer terms, courses may be added through the first two class days. Courses added after the first two class days through the Friday after four class days may be added only with instructor approval. Courses may not be added after this date. See the Academic Calendar for the final day to drop classes.

WITHDRAWAL FROM THE UNIVERSITY A student who is completely withdrawing from the university must obtain a withdrawal form from the Office of the Registrar, International Student Office, Financial Aid Office, or his or her Dean’s Office. Once this form is properly completed and processed through the Office of the Registrar and Student Financial Services, the withdrawal becomes effective on the date it is validated by the Student Accounts Office. A “W” (withdrawal) will be assigned to each course. Nonattendance of classes does not constitute official withdrawal. Withdrawal will be permitted up to and including the final regular day of classes for all semesters or terms. No withdrawals are permitted during finals week.

SCHOOL OF ADULT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION (SACE) The Petree College of Arts and Sciences offers through the School of Adult and Continuing Education program an alternative way to achieve a B.A. or B.S. degree. This program is designed to meet the needs and busy schedules of self-directed and motivated adults who are working full time. The best candidate for this nontraditional format is an adult over age 22, who has completed approximately 30 to 60 credit hours or more from regionally accredited institutions and who have a minimum of three years work experience. Prospective students will be evaluated on an individual basis for transfer of credit hours prior to admission so that both the institution and the applicants agree that this is the appropriate program for applicant. While in every sense as rigorous as the traditional B.A. or B.S. degree programs, SACE differs from the traditional degree structure in the following ways: 1. SACE allows, where applicable, the use of nontraditional course study or other advanced standing credits to fulfill degree requirements. 2. SACE allows the adult learner to develop an academic portfolio to document college-level knowledge and skills acquired from work, life experiences, and training outside of the college classroom. SACE requires a high degree of self-direction and self discipline on the part of the student. While the faculty and staff advise and assist the student, the student is responsible for academic success within the program. The policies for SACE are presented in the SACE Student Handbook. For additional information contact School of Adult and Continuing Education, Oklahoma City University, 2501 N. Blackwelder, Oklahoma City, OK 73106-1493, (405) 208-5265. www.okcu.edu/sace

SPRING 2012

Mission Statement Oklahoma City University embraces the United Methodist tradition of scholarship and service and welcomes all faiths in a culturally rich community dedicated to student success. Men and women pursue academic excellence through a rigorous curriculum focused on students’ intellectual, moral, and spiritual development to prepare them to become effective leaders in service to their communities. MILITARY SCIENCE Army ROTC Two-, three-, and four-year programs are available to Oklahoma City University students through a cooperative agreement between OCU and the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). This allows students to commute to UCO and attend Army ROTC classes while continuing to pursue their degrees at OCU. Through the Army ROTC Program, the Department of Military Science offers two programs to qualified male and female students leading to a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, the Army Reserves, or the Army National Guard. For more information, call the military science department at the University of Central Oklahoma, (405) 974-5167, (405) 974-5166, or (405) 205-8807 or visit their website: http://www.ucoarmyrotc.com.

Air Force ROTC Three- and four-year programs are available to OCU students through a cooperative agreement between OCU and the University of Oklahoma. The program may be completed in as little as one year in some cases. This “crosstown” agreement allows students to commute to the University of Oklahoma one or two days per week to attend Air Force ROTC classes while continuing their studies at OCU. Students who attend AFROTC at the University of Oklahoma under the agreement pay only for the semester hours that they take, and most fees and additional costs are waived. Students who enter the AFROTC program during the first half of the four-year program enter the General Military Course (GMC) of study on a noncompetitive basis. If they elect to go on, students compete for entry into the Professional Officer Course (POC), the second half of the four-year program, by being selected to attend Field Training in the summer prior to the junior year. Selection is based on a recommendation by the instructor of aerospace studies, GPA, a test equivalent score (Air Force Qualifying Test and either SAT or ACT, if available), and a physical fitness test. Those completing the program commission as active duty Air Force officers and serve for a minimum of four years. Scholarships are available on a competitive and noncompetitive basis that may be used at Oklahoma City University. Any questions concerning AFROTC or aerospace studies course descriptions should be addressed to Professor of Aerospace Studies or Unit Admissions Officer, University of Oklahoma, 171 Felgar St., Norman, OK 73019-0465, (405) 325-3211, or visit their website: http://www.ou.edu/rotc/air-force

Student Financial Services Information Payment for each semester is due in full by the first date of class as published in the OCU official academic calendar. An installment plan is available that offers 4 payments in the fall and spring semester and 2 payments in each summer semester. Contact the Student Financial Services office for more information on installment plans or go to www.okcu. edu/financialaid/options.aspx. Prior to the beginning of each semester, notification of a new statement will be sent to your OCU.stu email address. You may request an email notification of a new statement go to an authorized user by approving them on the online payment site. For more information call (405) 208-5146 or e-mail [email protected].

This class will explore fascism as a historical reality and as an on-going concern in modern totalitarian and democratic societies, both through films about fascism and through theoretical texts that seek to understand the nature and causes of fascism. We will examine how film can be used as propaganda that supports fascist causes and as an artistic creation that renders imaginative aesthetic forms free from fascism. In addition, we will consider the possibility of resisting fascism through 1) philosophies that arose to critique fascism and 2) films that examine patterns of resistance to the Nazi movement and contemporary forms of capitalism; these films will dramatize the ambiguity of the individual’s choice to escape from freedom or to choose freedom. Finally, we will consider the on-going relevance of fascism in today’s world through films that critique oppressive economic and political regimes and challenge us to imagine alternatives. We will explore beliefs and belief systems which will attempt to explain why so many people support invalidated claims. Fringe science claims will be evaluated based on available evidence. Fortune-telling (astrology, psychic predictions, palm reading), sensory illusions such as magic, faith healing, clairvoyance, telepathy, full moon effect, and psycho-kinesis will be some of the topics likely covered. WC 140 32964 INDP 6213 CONTEMPORARY TOPICS IN HUMANITIES: 3 Hours WRITING WORLDS -- AUTOBIOGRAPHY, FICTION, ANTHROPOLOGY BLENDS According to the cultural philosopher Yogi Berra, a person can “observe a lot by watching.” If this is so, what do we see when we observe? Can we see who or what is really there? Or, do we only see through the constraints of our own particular life context and/or cultural heritage? Do we, in short, invent what we see instead of representing what is there? We will explore these issues in works of modern autobiography, fiction, and anthropology. Are these forms of expression more similar than different? Do writers in each genre or form use similar techniques? Students will have the opportunity to write in response to the works as well as select one of these three forms for a longer writing. Sec. 30 W 6:00pm-8:40pm Winn, H. LO 121 32479
