Are you a publicity member and keen to generate interest in your sport? Are you perhaps organising an event or even starting a new club? Do you want to advertise your events for free and to a wide RAF audience in RAF Active? If so, send details and electronic images (with copyright information) to Flt Lt Paul Kiff (contact details inside the front cover).

Advertising in these pages To keep the ‘What’s On’ pages fresh and inviting, as well as relevant and informative, your sporting adverts and fixtures lists will only be featured in two consecutive editions. This maintains a fair and even balance between sports, ensuring that the reader is up-to-date on forthcoming events and not subject to repetitive advertising. However, many adverts will still be relevant after two editions and, therefore, they will now appear in a table of previously advertised events at the end of the ‘What’s On’ pages. New event dates or changes to previous dates will of course be published in full.

Alpine Challenge

Do you fancy taking part in an event which provides ‘an arduous and challenging competition over undulating terrain that will test physical endurance, mental stamina, team spirit, navigation skill and route selection’? If so then the 2008 Alpine Challenge could be what you are looking for. The demanding event will take place in the Allgau region of Bavaria from 20-22 Jun 08 over undulating terrain, climbing to a height of 1800 metres and covering an approximate distance of 40km on day one. Day 2 will consist of a 1km open boat stand, 10km arduous mountain biking and 20km walk. Entrants should attempt to complete both days of the challenge as a team. The entry categories are: All Male, All Female, Mixed and Veterans (35+). The Alpine Challenge is open to all serving Regular and TA personnel aged 18 or over and the entry fee is £50 per team. If you are interested in taking part please contact the Training Clerk at the Alpine Training Centre: Tel (0049) (0)8321 800516/800517; ATC Fax (0049) (0)8321 800532; PO Box 589, BFPO 105. Closing date for entries is 14 May 2008.

Nijmegen Marches 2008 The 92nd Nijmegen International Four Day Marches will take place from 12 -19 Jul 08 in the Netherlands. It has long been recognized as an excellent event, in which teams have to exhibit a variety of military competences, including leadership, man-management and teamwork, together with physical and mental resilience. In addition, the British military are rightly held in high esteem by the military staffs of the other participating nations and all personnel will be expected to uphold this tradition. Participants are required to march approximately 40km over different routes on each of the four marching days. All British military contingent (BMC) participants who complete all of the 4 days are to participate in the traditional end-of-march parade. Teams and individuals from all services and cadet organisations are invited to form part of the BMC. A team is to consist of at least 12 marchers. Units may bid for between 12 and 15 places, with all participants aged at least 16 years old on 12 Jul 08. All team members will be on duty for the period and permitted to wear military uniform. Team leaders are to hold the minimum substantive rank of sergeant but should ideally be a commissioned officer. However, units without an officer or SNCO to act as team leader, or with less than 12 marchers, may still submit an entry. At the discretion of the BMC committee, such teams will be combined with another and/or allocated a team leader as appropriate. All male marchers born between 1 Jan 59 and 31 Dec 89 are to carry British military-style webbing/Bergen ballasted to 10kg dead weight. This weight is not to include water, food or other consumables but will include the weight of the webbing/Bergen. Webbing/Bergens are liable for periodic weight checks by the organisers, and marchers with less than 10kg dead weight may be disqualified. Teams are therefore to train with weight from the outset. Female marchers do not have to carry weight. The Nijmegen Marches is a high profile and physically demanding event; therefore, a first class turnout and impeccable march discipline are the only standards that are acceptable. A gradual and sensible training programme is the only way to ensure success. Only teams and individuals who have successfully completed a recognised qualification event of at least two consecutive days, marching 40km each day, will be considered for selection by the BMC committee. There are 3 formal qualifying events available to teams and any one of these may be used as they closely mirror the preparation and standards required for success at Nijmegen. These events are: a) The RAF Walking and Road Marching Association (RAFWARMA) 2-day march at DCAE Cosford on 26-27 Apr 08. b) The Scottish Garelochhead 2-day march at Garelochhead Training Camp on 3-4 May 08. c) The British Forces Germany (BFG) 2-day march at JHQ Rheindahlen on 9-10 May 08. Successful completion of one of these events is compulsory for selection to march at Nijmegen. This year, in a continued attempt to streamline the organisation, the BMC administration will be conducted via e-mail or through the BMC’s Nijmegen websites which can be accessed as follows: a. Internet: http://cn5rsts007.dii.r.mil.uk/ukscg/nijmegen b. Internet: www.bfgnet.de/community/nijmegen.htm Teams or individual marchers wishing to enter are to complete the initial entry form available on these sites no later than 21 Mar 08. A hard copy of the form is to be forwarded along with the entry fee cheque to Flt Lt E J Whiteman, RAF Nijmegen Marches Co-ordinating Officer, Royal Air Force Odiham, Hook, Hampshire. Balearic Offshore Sailing Expedition Ex BALEARIC WATCH is an offshore sailing expedition running from Apr - Aug 08 and is open to all units or full time members of HM Forces. The Balearics provide an excellent sailing area and the islands of Menorca and Ibiza are within easy reach of L’Arinal Marina, Palma Bay, Majorca where the yacht is based. The yacht itself is a seven berth Starlight 35 belonging to the Royal Logistic Corps Yacht Club (RLCYC). It has recently undergone an extensive re-fit and is fully MCA coded with all the necessary safety equipment for offshore expeditions. Yacht manning levels must comply with AGAI No1 Volume 1 Chapter 11; however, the RLCYC stipulate that the skipper must, as a minimum, hold a RYA Coastal Certificate. Sea King IPT In The Power Bar 3 Peaks Yacht Race June 2008 Do you like sailing? Do you enjoy running and cycling? Would you consider doing all three in a singular event? Then the Three Peaks Yachting Challenge is for you. Now entering its sixth year, this event is both mentally and physically challenging and not for the faint hearted. So why have five engineers from the Sea King community in sunny Somerset decided to do just that? Well, after seeing the event televised on Channel 4 and getting a video of the event, it was passed between colleagues to see who would be of sufficient character to attempt next year’s race. Surprisingly, the response was very positive and a core team of 5 have thrown their hats into the ring. Now the hard part starts by trying to get equipment and funding to not only cover the entry fee of £600 but also the charter fees and expenses associated with this event. The RAFSA have been approached to help in the provision of a yacht and safety gear and we are awaiting a reply. Sponsorship is required and we are hoping that this article can push our cause to a larger arena. If there is anyone out there who would like to sponsor or would like their logo attached to a yacht sail or hull, please contact: Mr Ken Watkins, SKIPT, Castle Court, Coldharbour Business Park, Sherborne, Dorset, DT9 4JW, Tel:01935 818621, [email protected]

Event Details. The PowerBar Barmouth to Fort William Three Peaks Yacht Race combines yachting and mountain running (and a little bit of cycling) into one of the greatest adventure challenges in British sport. The race is now in its 30th year and its sail/run format has been copied in similar races as far away Hong Kong and Tasmania. Teams comprise 3 sailors and 2 runners, and their aim is to sail from Barmouth on the Welsh coast to Fort William in Scotland, via Caernarfon and Whitehaven, climbing to the summits of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis on the way. (The athletes cycle from Whitehaven into Ennerdale and run up and down Scafell Pike from there.) In total this is 389 miles of difficult coastal sailing, 18 miles of cycling and 72 miles of running, with 14,000 feet of ascent to reach the highest points in Wales, England and Scotland. The race is open to monohull yachts only and engine power can only be used close to port, but yachts can be rowed, or even pulled along by crew members on the shore. There are no handicaps or adjustments, it’s a straight race and the first team to get their runners back to their yacht in Fort William, having completed all the mountains, wins the coveted Daily Telegraph Cup. There are other trophies to race for as well. The fastest runners over all 3 tops are the ‘Kings of the Mountains’, and there are cups for the fastest run on each peak too. Equally prestigious is the ‘Tilman Trophy’, named after the great mountaineer and sailor who inspired the race. This is for all round performance and is for the fastest yacht which has put 4 team members onto a summit. The race attracts some of the world’s best sailors and runners, as well as teams who hope just to complete the course, which is a considerable achievement in its own right.

RAF Target Rifle Club Newcomers Day 25 Apr 08 All of us have to shoot at least once a year at CCS, but have you ever thought about shooting as a sport? The RAF Target Rifle Club takes the principles taught in weapon training and applies them to target rifle shooting, firing at targets from 300 to 1000 yards - all with a set of iron sights, no lenses allowed. In recent years the Club has shot in Jersey looking over the Channel to Alderney, shot in South Africa with Table Mountain as a backdrop, and shot on Bisley ranges in Surrey, the spiritual home of target shooting worldwide. The Club not only competes in glorious locations, it succeeds in them. We have won against national teams at home, in Europe and in Africa. We are the 2007 Inter-Service Short and Long Range Champions and our aim is to continue that success. Our planned tours for the next two years include the Channel Islands, New Zealand and South Africa. All of these are open to any club member, and our expert coaches can teach you to compete at national and international level. The club has taken several servicemen from novice to GB Team. All we need is your enthusiasm and participation. The club meets on nine weekends between March and October and beginners are welcome at any time. The Club is also holding a training day for beginners on Friday 25 Apr 08 at Bisley. The day will consist of high quality training on a one-to-one basis from some of the best shots in the RAF (and the world), with the opportunity to represent the RAF on the 26 and 27 Apr 08. Further details are available from the RAFTRC Youth Development member Fg Off Rob Douglas at RAF Honington Mil Tel: 95991 6713, the RAFTRC Secretary Jim Lindsay at [email protected] or on the RAFTRC website at www.raftrc.org.uk.

RAF Athletics Association (RAFAA) The RAFAA encompasses track and field, cross-country, road running and tug-of-war, and reaches out to athletes from novice to international standard, coaches, officials and all those who simply enjoy the sport. If you have an interest in any of these sporting areas, and wish to share in the esprit-de-corps of being a member of the RAF Athletics team, in whichever capacity, then contact your unit Athletics OIC, PEd Flt, or one of the Team Managers, whose details you will find at www.raf.mod.uk/rafathletics. Track and Field (Apr-Aug)

The track and field season is just beginning for 2008. Budding and experienced athletes should keep their eye out for information regarding up-and-coming events where a good effort on the day could get you a podium position and, in the future perhaps, a place on the starting line up at an international event wearing an RAF vest! From April there are a number of one-day meetings where athletes can typically represent their unit and the RAF against the Army, Navy and other civilian services and institutions. A classic starting point is the President’s Cup, on 28 May 08, which is pitched at an inter-station level and aimed at novice athletes of all abilities as well as seasoned athletes. All events serve as a recruiting ground for the more serious competitions that take place at home and abroad, although all levels are encouraged to participate. Road and Cross Country (Sep-Apr) Through the winter months there is a busy calendar of events. Although all these events include a strong element of competition,

11 most are open to the public and some are run as charity events. All events are open to any MoD runner and many, such as the Honington 10K in September, provide an excellent opportunity to achieve a personal best time. There are road and cross country events almost every weekend as well as some MoD-specific events during the week. Distances from 5K up

the RAFAA website. With competitions all over the UK, including participation in the Braemar Royal Highland Games, there are lots of opportunities to test your mettle against many Army, Navy and civilian teams. www.raf.mod/rafathletics Other Events The RAFAA are always looking to expand the exploits of its athletics teams. In 2007 a team competed in and won the inter-services relay event at the Braemar Royal Highland Games and Chief Technician Frank Chapman received the Braemar Shield from Her Majesty the Queen. Do you know of any unique events where the RAF could compete? Could you be the team captain, receiving trophies like the Braemar Shield? If you are looking for an athletics challenge, whether as a novice, a seasoned competitor, or if you are simply looking for some friendly athletics competition and team spirit, then contact your unit’s OIC Athletics and PEd Flt, and take a look at the RAFAA website where you can find the latest information regarding track and field events in 2008.

President’s Cup - RAF Athletics Association The RAFAA President’s Cup will be held at DCAE Cosford on Wednesday 28 May 08. This track and field athletics event is designed to encourage all levels of participation with none of the technical events. Throughout the day there will be track events of all distances from 100m to 3000m, as well as field events such as javelin and long jump. This is a team event, with stations/units entering one or more mixed teams. Each team must have at least 3 men and 3 women to count towards final station/unit standings. Individuals may enter a maximum of 3 events, one track, one field and the relay. This event is designed to appeal to those athletes who are motivated by an opportunity to contribute to a team effort rather than as individual specialists in line with the team ethos of the RAF Athletics Association and the wider RAF. Although this event is used as a means of identifying potential athletics talent, all levels of ability are encouraged to attend. All RAF personnel are eligible to attend. Approach your unit’s OIC Athletics and/or PEd Flt for further details. Also, visit the RAFAA website at www.raf.mod.uk/rafathletics where you will find useful contacts and the very latest information regarding forthcoming athletics events.
