Centaur grew from humble beginnings in the summer of 1973 to now being the largest sports construction specialty contractor in Canada. Why we Developed our Sport Contracting Program The concept for Sport Contracting was developed because sport facility construction, whether indoor or outdoor, presents many unique challenges when conventional construction procedures are applied. This is in large part because the finishing work in a sport facility is not merely aesthetic, as it tends to be in other types of construction, rather it is the single most important aspect of the facility itself and critical to the long term success of a facility. Some examples of this finishing work include sport surfacing, seating, sports equipment and communications equipment. These specialty elements of a sport facility are crucial to facility users and operators because of the highly intensive manner in which they interact with these areas. So the concept for Sport Contracting arose from listening to building operators, athletes and program coordinators who all emphasized that the long term success of their facilities were dependent on this highly specialized finishing work in their facility. Yet, they often felt that project design and contracting practices did not adequately prioritize this fact and it was impacting the overall effectiveness of their facility once the project was complete. Seeing this theme consistently emerge, it was clear there was a need for comprehensive project guidance. While traditional contracting companies are highly specialized in managing construction budgets & schedules and design firms provide expertise in the general aspects of facility design, there is a lack of specialized expertise as to what it actually takes to build a successful sports facility, in terms of functionality, efficiency and profitability. Thus we developed our Sport Contracting Program.

We offer full design-build services that include the integrated planning, design, and construction of a number of sport facility project types. We manage the entire process from early planning and design to project completion and even beyond with a number of service and maintenance plans available.

We offer a range of sport facility consulting services. From early project planning to design options and existing facility assessments we provide a number of consulting options available to assist in the construction and servicing of a number of sport facility specialties.

We provide experienced estimating and budgeting services during the early project design and planning phase to assist with capital budget development.

We can provide pricing or connect you with a distributor for any type of sport facility product that you may need. We also install a comprehensive range of products, surfaces and equipment.

We offer several educational and teaching programs designed to help our clients understand how to evaluate sport product quality. In addition we also can coordinate the testing of materials, construction, engineering, safety and comfort of different surfaces and products in the sport market.

Centaur employs a team of fulltime, local, installation technicians and product specialists. If you experience any problems, product defects, require additional training or need updated maintenance information, just contact your local Centaur representative and your problem will be dealt with promptly and with the utmost in care.

richmond Olympic Oval

Located on the banks of the Fraser River in Richmond, BC, the Richmond Olympic Oval was first constructed in 2008 as the future home for speed skating events at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Games. A major component of the project was to maximize the use of the facility for the community before and after the games. To meet this demand Centaur was contracted to supply and install a hardwood sports flooring system for the inner part of the oval prior to the games. Following the 2010 Winter Olympics, Centaur played a major role in the legacy phase of the project by supplying and constructing sports surfaces as well as providing scoreboards and sports equipment for the facility. This massive undertaking included 73,000 square feet of spike-proof synthetic sports flooring, over 42,000 square feet hardwood sports flooring, rubber flooring and sports equipment.

BC Place Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, BC, the former BC Place was in need of a major renovation following a roof collapse in 2007. Centaur played an important role in the design, supply and installation of the new synthetic turf surface. The surface would need to be suitable for both professional football and professional soccer and also be able to withstand the rigors of an intensive schedule and many non-sporting events such as large concerts and events. The playing surface was state-of-the-art synthetic turf designed to achieve FIFA 2-Star Recommended Status and provide the most ideal playing conditions for both soccer and football. The facility is now home to one of the premier artificial turf surfaces in the entire world.

Saville community

Centaur played a major role in the construction of this facility by supplying and installing over 130,000 sq.ft. of hardwood sports flooring consisting 9 NBA-sized basketball courts, 9 full-size volleyball courts, a 22,000 sq. ft. gymnastics centre and multiple meeting and party rooms. The facility is now one of the largest hardwood floor facilities in all of North America. In addition to the hardwood surfacing, Centaur supplied and installed 36 ceiling-folding basketball backstops, 9 divider curtains and provided a full scoreboard package complete with shot clocks, time of day clocks, scorer’s tables and a 2,500 seat telescopic seating system in the Competition Gym. This Centre is now home of the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas volleyball and basketball teams.

St. Andrew’s College Located in Aurora, ON, St. Andrew’s College is one of Canada’s premier academic and athletic institutions. Centaur worked with the school to provide a synthetic turf system complete with environmentally-friendly infill and a Poly-Shock Pad. The project also involved the installation of a PUR running track surrounding the field as well as scoreboards, some seating and sports equipment. This is now one of the premier High School athletic facilities in Canada.

Carleton FieldHouse Located in Ottawa, ON, the Carleton University Fieldhouse renovation project included the supply and installation of 45,000 square feet of a portable indoor turf panel system as well as replacing the existing running track with a new 7,500 square foot, 230 metre, 3-lane running track surface. The synthetic turf panel system was selected because of its unique noninfill design which avoids the need for heavy rolls and equipment and is easier to store. In addition, the University selected the surface because the surface provides a higher level of protection for athletes against concussions and injuries.
