The optional subjects, independent of the semester when they are included in the Curriculum, are considered ‚pass’ when students are assessed correspondingly and the credit points add to the 30 regular ones.

SPECIFICS for PART TIME STUDIES The operation of the study programme, namely Journalism, for the PART TIME studies, relies on the general principles used for the full time, as well as on the standards and procedures that are specific to the PT course type. The curriculum pertinent to the full time studies is designed in compliance with the mission and objectives of the Journalism major, considering the ARACIS (Romanian gency of study programmes accreditation) standards, internal and community legislation, based on the European ECTS system. In this context, the curriculum for the part time studies provides a similar training with the full time ones. The subjects, number of hours, credits assigned to the subjects, as well as the final assessment are precisely the same. In the curriculum, each subject includes two categories of activities: seminar (S) and ongoing assessment, with the same number of seminar hours as the full time courses; practical activities (L, P) – labs, projects, practicum – activities attended by students, with the same number of hours as the full time courses. These activities are scheduled per each semester, according to the subject calendar and academic schedule. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays afternoons, as posted on the schedule at the notice board and the University site, the students come for the practical activities. The academia will deliver seminars based on the individual study carried out by students, while approaching the method of dialogue and open debates, initiating a partnership context, where the students will gain confidence in their own forces and desire to study in depth certain issues. The practical works will build a series of skills specific to each subject, competences and practical abilities that are useful in their future pursuits. All these activities comply with the objectives and mission of the Faculty. As a result of this practical training, the students will be able to acquire the work techniques with research tools, methods of data processing and results interpretation, their analysis and graphical representation. The practical works are performed in the labs (radio, 13

television, informatics), equipped with instruments and materials specific to certain types of subjects, in line with the current standards. The assessment systems include both permanent, ongoing (essays, mid-terms, active seminar participation) and also final assessment (exam, colloquium). The differences for the part time studies consist in the teaching resources made available, how they are presented and distributed, by using the computer-based technologies and the tutoring support. For the subjects in the curriculum that are assessed, appropriate teaching materials are provided, both in the traditional and electronic formats: audio/video cassettes, CD/DVDs, memory stick. All the curriculum subjects are dealt with in the printed materials, meant for individual study. There are coursebooks, practicum and lab notebooks, devised by the tenured teachers, including the fundamental knowledge, structured as mentioned in the syllabus, and also practical work for better understanding, self-assessment and references. The printed coursebooks include the following information fields: introduction to the course content; objectives and competences of the learning unit, key concepts; content of the learning unit; time alloted to learning; topics for the final assessment preparation; selfassessment tests for each topic; references. The size and coverage degree of the coursebook needs to respond to the student’s learning efforts, in correlation with the number of credits assigned to the subject and with the course description. The course supervisors will structure the teaching materials into one-step-at-a-time, which suggests a larger significance and bigger effort from the students for ‚search’ into the recommended references (mainly the mandatory one) and the self-assessment tests, while browsing through the hypertexts inserted into the study materials (for consolidation). The video cassettes, including the short and concise form of the courses, are to be found in the TvH20 video library (http://www.tvrm.ro/). CDs and DVDs with online versions of the subjects are available in the TvH20 video library. The Virtual Library, with the online short versions of the courses, is at http://www.spiruharet.ro/facultati/biblioteca.php?id=25. While accessing the webpage of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences, an electronic window opens where the students can find guidelines, information, as well as the login info. The Virtual Library can be accessed via a user name and a password, regularly updated. Once the part-time students have accessed the Virtual Library, they select the study programme they are enrolled in. They will see the name of the faculty management (dean, departmen director, subject supervisors, tutors, coordinators) whom they can contact by email. The channel of communication between students and teachers is Outlook Express. There are also provided the online links to the main libraries in the country and abroad. The virtual library features updated links (with possibilities of access) to various publications in this field (periodicals, annuals, etc) in Romanian and foreign languages. For a better training by individual study, the TvH20 television channel brings a great contribution, by broadcasting a series of debates on the issues related to the topics in the syllabus. The tenured teachers participate into them and they approach these matters with the latest information, which is very helpful to the students. TVH2.0 (http://www.tvrm.ro/initialeducational.htm) şi TVH20 Cultural (http://www.tvrm.ro/tvrmc/initialcultural.htm), broadcasting courses, lectures, debates, video notice boards shows, student news. The TvH20 Educaţional has a daily broadcast of a specisl show called Teleamfiteatru, where teachers introduce course topics. Similarly, other shows provide the opportunity to the part-time students to watch debates or join a direct dialogue with their teachers: Academica, Haretistii, Contrapunct, Invitatul de la ora 13, Un răspuns 14

pentru fiecare, Apel telefonic. All the above aim to facilitate the contact of the part-time students with their teachers. Radio HFM2.0– Studenţesc is a national, university and cultural radio station that broadcasts debates, lectures, student news, etc, which all contribute to a good professional preparation of the part-time students (http://www.radiorm.ro/). The television and the radio channels feature shows of a didactic, cultural and information profile (including advertising for part-time studies). Once turned into an electronic format, the courses are posted in the Virtual Library of the Faculty, internet (http://www.spiruharet.ro/facultati/biblioteca.php?id=25), on the printed temporary support for being used in the audio-video recording, on CDs and DVDs and on Memory Sticks for computer use. On their request, the part-time students are able to watch the teaching shows related to their curriculum subjects: individually. The PT students have the opportunity to watch the TvH20 shows via personal parabolic dish antennas, from the satellite (by prin Digi Satelit and/or RCS&RDS); the cable distribution networks of the shows of various TV channels that ‚borrow’ the TvH20 transmissions and broadcast them in Bucharest and in any locality in the country and abroad for the benefit of the regular subscribers (via Digi Cablu and/or RCS&RDS); internet watching of the TvH20 channels, live, in real time, in any location in the world, with the opportunity of accessing the internet, 24 hours a days, depending on the local time zone (http://www.tvrm.ro/). Another course support is the Memory Sticks: The printed learning materials can be distributed to the students in Word, PDF or PowerPoint formats, placed on Memory Sticks. At the same time, the courses in a video, audio, audio-video format are downloaded on the Memory Sticks. These representations benefit from extension formulae by hypertexts and multi-links to other resources in other Virtual Libraries or on sited in the country and abroad that include learning materials for the subjects in the Curriculum. The informatics labs of Spiru Haret University have the required technique for downloading on CDs or DVDs the courses pertinent to the subjects in the Curriculum of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences. The electronic equipment of the Faculty can be used here. While considering that the printed coursebooks are processed in the University’s own labs, their content is firstly electronically archived. This electronic archiving is a basis for inscribing the content of each course on CD/DVD. One of the main channels of direct communication between the PT students and their teachers is the internet. Each teacher has an email address on the site of Spiru Haret University, which makes possible for the students to keep a permanent contact for any issue they may be arising, in real time, at distance. The Spiru Haret University site hosts a column called ‚În dialog cu facultatea’ (In dialogue with the faculty), meant for the PT students. Besides the virtual scientific advice, the academia here provides onsite scoentific advice, as per the schedule posted at the beginning of the academic year. The instructional system specific to the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences is structured on operational modules that provide the students, in an organized, focused and coherent manner, with information and corrective feedback for those who are learning to acquire skills and competences that will help them be employed and be better integrated in the learning process that they assume to themselves on an individual basis. This is how the academic community of Spiru Haret University, consisting of students, academia and auxiliary staff, namely facilitators of the learning process, proves to be 15

extremely flexible, efficient and meets the needs of every student (as the entire learning process is student-centered) so as to give them a real chance to being involved in the learning process and immersion in the instructional system pertinent to this profession.

FINAL BACHELOR DEGREE EXAMINATION The final bachelor degree examination completes the studies at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences and consists of two steps: an exam for assessing the fundamental and specialty knowledge and the defense of the bachelor paper that will grant the graduate the title of licensed (B.Sc.). 10 credits are assigned for this stage. The certificate of linguistic competence is a prerequisite for eligibility to participate in the bachelor degree examination.

LEARNING PROCESS The learning process develops in compliance with the curriculum. The structure of the study programme guarantees the correspodence among the learning outcomes, competences and the abilities acquired and required for the professions on the labor market. 18

The curriculum of this study programme includes subjects that are stipulated for the humanistic education – master level – so that they will make up a unity and provide the alignment of the professional training content and the curriculum requirements with the European and international norms and regulations. For this master study programme, we replaced the ex cathedra lectures with interactive presentations, exercise learning through discovery, by brainstorming, give an ampler space to the seminar debates – essays, projects that will constitute the ground for future research. The number of hours alloted to preparing courses and seminars is equally distributed for each of the four semesters, namely 14 hours a week. For the last semester, 2 weeks will be used for the completion of the master dissertation paper. The curriculum and the syllabuses, examined and approved by the Board of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences steer the efforts of the master students and academia into two esential directions: acquisition of theoretical and practical in the area of MASS-MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION and building skills in research. A great attention is paid to the preparation of the master students for the research activity, through their dissertation papers. Thus, the academia will suggest certain topics for the Research Designing activity. Similarly, we mention that the curriculum subjects are fully covered by teaching materials – courses, published on the USH site at www.spiruharet.ro, on the Blackboard elearning platform. The curriculum includes subjects related to knowledge consolidation and reasoning, with a content pertinent to the master study programme profile and mission, relevant for the pace of the development in knowledge and technology and for the requirements of the labor market and qualifications at national and European levels.
