WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS 2013

Welcome to Findhorn Co-creating a positive future for people and planet We have made it – past the threshold of Findhorn’s 50th year and through the portentous year of 2012 – and here we are with a full programme of events at Findhorn for you in 2013. Welcome to a new world, a new spirit, and a new way of being. The one thing that stands out at this moment in time is a renewed conviction and confidence in the principle of co-creation, one of the pillars of the Findhorn Foundation community. Without this deep sense of the relationship of each one to each other, and with all of nature, how can solutions to our personal challenges be complete and how can lasting positive change manifest? This is a turning point for us all, no matter our place in the whole community of this planet, and co-creation is at its heart. In 2013 you will find all the programmes that make Findhorn a unique place to experience and learn about the nature of your world. Essential Findhorn programmes from Experience Week to the 15-month-long Findhorn Intensive, give opportunities for grounded, practical, everyday insights and practice. Being part of the community, for a week or a year, is a doorway in time, a space to connect, a bridge to the new.

We look forward to welcoming back Joanna Macy, Caroline Myss, and to experiencing the major conference for this year: Forgiveness – The Great Undoing. Findhorn Ecovillage Experience will run for its 15th year, and for the first time we will be welcoming a conference of the International Communal Studies Association on sustainable living. Opportunities to celebrate creativity and wellbeing include the event EarthSings and our annual highlight, Festival of Sacred Dance, Music and Song. You are welcome as our honoured guests and as part of the community to co-create with us the future we are all looking forward to. Wishing you all the very best,

Eva Ward PS Thank you for the past many years of editing this programmes brochure, it is now time to hand over to the new. It has been a joy and a privilege.

ESD is shaping the purpose and content of all education for our times and is education for the present and the future! Findhorn Ecovillage Experience (previously known as Ecovillage Training, now in its 15th year) is an official contribution to the main learning goals of the UN DESD since its launch in 2005. This programme provides an ideal learning environment where the social, ecological, economic and worldviews aspects of sustainability meet in an integrated whole. FINDHORN FOUNDATION COMMUNITY

The Findhorn Foundation and Community works in cocreation with the intelligence of nature to awaken the highest in human potential. All who engage here, residents and visitors, find an environment to foster profound personal change, seed new ideas and birth practical and positive responses to the challenges and opportunities of our times. Experiencing life at Findhorn is the perfect way to learn about wholeness, integrity, purpose, leadership, love, beauty, co-creation, communication, joy and service. We pioneer a holistic approach to sustainability that integrates four aspects – spiritual, social, environmental and economic. By developing not just the externals of sustainability such as ecohousing, ecological sewage treatment and renewable energy, but also addressing the inner life of human beings and giving people an opportunity to experience being part of an interconnected web of life, the Foundation has become a unique centre for learning and a valuable and potent force for change. Our holistic approach to sustainability is demonstrated in our three main areas of activity: spiritual community; ecovillage; learning centre. Community life provides the spiritual and social framework of sustainability upon which our ecovillage and economic activities are woven. The Foundation financially depends upon sharing our learning with others through our guest programme of workshops and events. 4

We offer a transformative environment where new ways of thinking and being in the world have space to grow, and where learning takes place naturally through ordinary activities in daily life. Practising community values for a month, a week, or even a day can often lead to changes that increase self-esteem, promote healthy relationships, give a sense of empowerment and can encourage leadership. Our activities give rise to further new projects, systems and structures that support and sustain humans and our environment; the Findhorn Foundation is a founding member of the Global Ecovillage Network, New Findhorn Association, Park Ecovillage Trust, Ekopia Resource Exchange, CIFAL Scotland, and several other initiatives. The Findhorn Foundation currently has 120 members of staff and is part of a growing community of more than 300 people in the local area who support and practise spiritual and sustainable values, including small businesses and charities primarily working in education, the environment, healing and the arts. We are proud of our pioneering role and look forward to continuing as a seed centre, catalysing and demonstrating effective change, and to helping to co-create a positive future for humanity and the planet.

Essential Findhorn

ESSENTIAL FINDHORN PROGRAMMES

Experience Week and our other Essential Findhorn programmes are unique to Findhorn. While you are here you are part of a learning community, having a chance to do things differently and to put your insights and deeper values into everyday action. You can connect with your own inspiration, with the people around you, and with the intelligence of nature, to find new facilities and skills for a more meaningful, holistic and sustainable life. When you participate in Cluny Kitchen, Park Garden, Cluny Homecare or any of our other departments, all tasks, from cooking the lunch, planting seeds or cleaning the floor, are valued and essential parts of the whole. There is the potential for learning to take place 24 hours a day and with every person and situation you meet, as well as within the traditional setting of workshops and events. Founding principles The founding principles of Findhorn are very much alive and practised today. Inner listening and attunement are integral parts of our daily life and there is time set aside before, during and after the working day to attune. We have four meditation sanctuaries in The Park and one at Cluny Hill, and there are many other ways to connect with your own inner wisdom, including dancing, playing, singing, walking and being in nature. The gardens at The Park and Cluny Hill reflect our delight in co-creating with nature, and they are nourishing and beautiful environments. At Cullerne Gardens we grow organic, seasonal food for our kitchens. The beautiful unspoiled coastal landscape of the Moray Firth provides further inspiration for discovering a closer relationship with the natural world. Inspired action is a commitment to open and honest interactions, working together, growing organic food, building ecohouses, running businesses, erecting wind turbines, recycling, meditating, exploring alternative economic systems, and interacting with our visitors. The Findhorn ecovillage is a built environment in harmony with people and our planet. We interact with the tools we use, with the landscape, with each other, and with our own inner wisdom in a conscious and attuned way, knowing that our small actions are interconnected and are important for the future of humanity and our planet. Essential Findhorn begins with Experience Week and continues on a journey of self-discovery and inspired activity. Elements of these unique Essential Findhorn programmes can also be found in all our other workshops and events.

VISITING FINDHORN If you can stay for a week or more, an Experience Week is the best way to connect with Findhorn, providing a complete experience of what is on offer here. Or there is a wide choice of workshops and events to choose from, starting on page 6. If you can stay for only a few days, you can participate as a ShortTerm Guest for between one and six days. You will have the opportunity to participate in a service department and share meals, meditate in sanctuaries and engage in community activities. Please see page 43 for more details. If you would like to bring a group, we can offer tailor-made experiences ranging from a day up to a week. See page 20. Accommodation When you attend one of our workshops or events you’ll be accommodated either at our Cluny Hill site, a former Victorian spa hotel, or at The Park in one of the original bungalows, or in an eco chalet. Please see page 42 for more details. If you are not participating in a residential programme there are a number of Bed and Breakfasts in The Park and in the nearby village, go to www.findhorn.org/bandb. Experience Week is the best way to come to Findhorn and find out what it’s like. It’s the ideal way to meet, engage with and share in this ever-evolving journey of deeply sustainable community living. The week also includes meditation, sacred dance, a nature outing and being part of a supportive group, all combined with laughter, love and new ways of being. Experience Week is an invitation to let go of your limitations, open to love, and to be the change you want to see in the world. It gives you a chance to experience the principles on which the community is based: inner listening, a connection with all life, and inspired living. We ask that you come willing to participate fully in this rich and active week, to give of yourself and engage with others. Spiritual Practice 2 - 8 March, 6 - 12 April, 8 - 14 June Space for you to explore and connect with your innermost self. Spiritual Practice supports you to continue a path of transformation and growth in your everyday life. It gives you time to explore meditation, different kinds of exercises and to approach ordinary activities in a new way that encourages space for creativity and laughter. All this is spiritual practice. We look at what supports or may sabotage you deepening your practice. There are daily sessions together and afternoons are in Foundation service departments to integrate practical life with

your spiritual practice. The week is less of a group experience than Experience Week and you are more integrated into the life and rhythms of the community. The group is generally smaller. There is time to take part in community meditations and events, and one day is spent in silence as an opportunity to deepen your inner experience. These elements are also part of the Special Spiritual Practice Weeks. Income related price: £435 / £525 / £675 Experience Week prerequisite

Special Spiritual Practice Weeks Spiritual Practice – Holistic Sexuality 16 - 22 February Franco Santoro Learn how to use spiritual practice to explore your authentic way of expressing sexuality, retrieving your capacity to be deeply in love with yourself and your relationships, including nature and the divine. Sexual energy permeates everything. We breathe it into our lungs and radiate it from our pores. It is the foundation of both our physical and spiritual connection. We integrate various spiritual healing and bodywork practices with practical activities. Spiritual Practice – The Power of Intention 16 - 22 March Astrid Gude You can create new neural pathways that bring about personal healing and contribute to the creation of a positive world for all of life. Learn new tools that can easily be integrated into everyday life that allow you to transform your inner landscape. We release blocking beliefs and reconnect with our unlimited potential to shine.

Spiritual Practice – Nature 20 - 26 April, 13 - 19 July, 3 - 9 August Katharina Brocke

Spiritual Practice – Clay 15 - 21 June Craig Gibsone

An introduction to the subtle dimensions of the Earth. We practise attunement to the loving intelligence within the nature kingdom in the Findhorn way. Through a combination of exercises in perception, attunement and meditation, as well as making a flower essence and working in the garden, we move closer to the beauty and uniqueness of our own soul.

With the landscape of Findhorn Bay and the surrounding coastline as an inspiration for our week, we journey with the four elements – earth, air, fire and water – using the medium of clay to focus and centre ourselves, and to create spiritual alchemy. Clay is a magical and primal substance that comes alive and takes form, bringing us a sense of co-creating with the spiritual dimension of all things. Included is time for reflection and insight that can be used to strengthen your inner commitment to a spiritual life.

Spiritual Practice – Permaculture 18 - 24 May, 21 - 27 September Craig Gibsone We use Permaculture principles to look at how we live our lives day to day, and to connect with the wisdom of the Earth and ourselves. This ecological design system can inspire and empower us to create and find answers within us.

Spiritual Practice – Active Meditation 10 - 16 August Astrid Gude This journey within uses movement, sound and breath to cleanse and balance your energy, express feelings, remove blocks, and to connect more easily with the flow of life and all that is – an experience of being light-filled spirit in a body.

Essential Findhorn Spiritual Practice – Ritual and Ceremony 14 - 20 September Astrid Gude “Ceremonies open the lines of communication between you and the power of the universe.” - Sandra Ingerman. We will work with ceremonies and rituals that honour the elements, connect us more deeply with the web of life and strengthen our inner light and radiance for personal and planetary healing. Spiritual Practice – Living Intuitively 19 - 25 October Nadasree Georgete Gadas We know everything we need to know at any given moment. This is a journey of discovery as well as confirmation of our intuitive abilities. We will do exercises to develop our sensitivity and subtle perception, and use diverse meditation practices that enhance our inner connection and deeper listening to our own wisdom. We practise ways of bringing this enhanced sensitivity into our day-to-day living in the world.

Spiritual Practice – A New ‘We’ 9 - 15 November Nadasree Georgete Gadas Experiencing a feeling of separation limits our sensitivity to others and often makes our contacts clumsy or awkward, mostly focused on ourselves. We will use practices that bring us to the heart level, developing our compassion and ability to empathise with the world. Through our interconnectedness we discover the beauty and aliveness in our communication and a more awake way of being with one another.

Spiritual Practice – Primal Painting 7 - 13 December Craig Gibsone Primal painting is a simple yet profound way of allowing your deepest self to express all the colours of your life, including all of the light and dark shades of your spiritual journey. It is an inspiring way to expand your spiritual practice and no special artistic skills are required. Income related price: £475 / £625 / £845 Experience Week prerequisite

Spiritual Practice – Manifestation 23 - 29 November Franco Santoro Learn how to use spiritual practice in order to clarify your purpose and manifest ‘right living’. We explore your unique way of opening to spiritual guidance to unveil your potential and bring benefit to yourself, your relationships and the planet. We integrate spiritual healing practices with practical service activities, and release disturbing patterns, converting them into energy to support our goals.

‘Delicious food, gracious company and a serene environment. What a joy!’

Exploring Community Life For Exploring Community Life dates please see calendar on pages 24 - 27 Exploring Community Life (ECL) is a great way to broaden your understanding of the community or to give you time and space to integrate your experience of Findhorn after participating in another workshop. You may also find this to be an attractive option for coming back to visit and reconnect with the community. There is less emphasis on a group experience than in an Experience Week, and you are more integrated into the life and daily rhythms of the community. The group size is generally smaller and the programme will run even for one person. It includes participation in a service department to become more familiar with our guiding principle of ‘love in action’. There are also sharings, and the possibilities of a group project, a nature outing and if there is interest, a taste of the Transformation

Game. Evenings provide opportunities to join in with community activities and explore different aspects of living here, which may include spiritual and personal development, creative arts and sustainable living. If you are thinking about a longer term commitment to staying at Findhorn, ECL can give you a good sense of what it is like to live at Findhorn and it is a prerequisite for joining some of our further Essential Findhorn programmes such as the Living in Community Guest Programme and Living Essentials Apprentice Programme. Service Weeks

Service Weeks give you the opportunity to come to Findhorn and lend a hand while giving yourself the gift of practising love in action. The price charged for these weeks just covers your food, accommodation and admin fees, making it an affordable way to spend time in the community. We invite you to attune to a price between £95 - £295. Experience Week prerequisite A Gift to Cluny – Spring Clean Celebration 26 January - 1 February

In Perfect Timing – Gardening at Cullerne 27 April - 3 May, 11 - 17 May

Love in Action – Maintenance at The Park 27 July - 2 August

Do you feel drawn to offer your energy as a gift to wonderful Cluny and all the people who benefit from being here? This week is a time of purification and renewal as we complete tasks and play together to clean and transform the building and ourselves. No ordinary spring clean, this is a grand opportunity to clear out ‘old baggage’ on all levels.

In Cullerne Gardens, we co-create with nature to grow flowers and food for the community, bringing beauty and nourishment to all. Share our love for the gardens by joining our team for a week or two. Together, we will do lots of sowing, preparing, mulching and planting out in our fields and polytunnels, while celebrating and enjoying being at Findhorn in the spring.

Experience being part of a team offering service for a higher purpose. On a practical level, we use this time to beautify and make improvements to buildings and areas in The Park, with the help of both skilled and unskilled people. The week also includes an outing, time for personal sharings and is a good way to meet people living here.

Sprinklings of Light – Spring Cleaning at The Park 2 - 8 February Would you like to offer your energy, love and service in preparation for the new season at The Park? As a group we cleanse ourselves and the spaces used by our guests and community on outer and inner levels. Join us for an active week of fun, focus, service and creativity.

10

Coming Home to the Garden – Gardening at The Park 4 - 10 May, 18 - 24 May As the natural world bursts into spring flowers and fresh green leaves, we invite you to join us in a hands-on gardening week. We’ll help to create an abundant summer of flowers, fruit and vegetables, while exploring Earth mysteries and the connection between our inner and outer gardens.

‘It has opened me up to many more of the possibilities in love as well as letting go of old pain to move on.’

‘I did not expect to get so much love, peace and new ideas.’

Living in Community Guest Programme Starts every Saturday except 5 January, 30 March, 28 September Explore living in the Findhorn community for a month or more by joining the Living in Community Guest (LCG) Programme. This is a dynamic, creative and purposeful way to explore the meaning of service and to experience the gifts that come through living in community. Sharing all aspects of life in this vibrant environment opens the space for you to deepen your relationship with yourself, with God, with people, and nature – creating an ever more meaningful experience of life. The programme is available in four-week segments, starting most Saturdays. It begins with clarifying your individual purpose and ends with a personal review to support you in integrating your experiences and to explore your next steps. Using the process of attunement you join the team of one of our service departments (gardens, kitchens, dining room, homecare or maintenance) where you can deepen your experience of love in action, and the awareness, joy and freedom that arise from serving in this way. When you want to join LCG for the first time or are returning to do the LCG Programme after several months or years, you need to participate in either Exploring Community Life, Spiritual Practice or one of our Service Weeks as a prerequisite. You can also apply after having taken part in our month-long programmes Learning English in Community or Findhorn Ecovillage Experience. The prerequisite programme can be done any time within three months prior to joining LCG. We will invite you for an intake interview and an

Dave Robinson LEAP participant For me LEAP provided the opportunity to continue serving the community; love in action. This way of service feeds the individual and the collective at the same time, and the learning comes through the challenges presented by everyday life and interactions with others. Living in community there are many mirrors, and most importantly, an invitation to move continually toward authenticity. Many people in the world today find their everyday environments compromised by deep separation. There is an invitation in the LEAP programme to move beyond this way of living and find more holistic ways.

Living Essentials Apprentice Programme (LEAP) An agreement to serve LEAP is our staff intake programme where you apprentice and learn the ways in which we live together here at Findhorn. We welcome you to come and contribute your own unique gifts and skills, so that together we can co-create a more loving and sustainable world. Applications will be considered through a process of attunement, and are subject to the needs of service departments and availability of living space at the time of your application. Once accepted onto LEAP you engage with the joys and challenges of daily life in a spiritual community and ecovillage. We invite you to join in the practice of being present in every task and interaction, and to choose to live everyday life as a spiritual path, based on our core spiritual principles of inner listening, love in action and co-creation with nature. You join in a service department, participate in community meetings, engage in spiritual and personal development, and have regular reviews. We ask you to commit to participating fully, including some weekends, and we will provide you with food, basic accommodation and a supportive learning environment. If accepted onto the programme, you spend a minimum of two months and up to six months as a Short Term LEAP participant. After a review, if you then wish to make a longer commitment (minimum six months – up to two years) you will become a Long Term LEAP participant. After your Long Term LEAP induction days, your programme means you will have weekly group meetings and you are assigned a personal mentor for the initial six months. LEAP is a commitment to serve this centre and a pathway towards becoming a member of staff. It is equally valid for you

to take back out into your life, skilled and equipped to be a world server and leader. We welcome you to take the leap, explore, and come and live the soul of service with us. Please note staff positions are limited and there is no guarantee of a staff job at the end of the programme. We welcome applications for this programme all year round. For further information please contact [email protected] Income related price is £50 - £350 per month while on Short Term LEAP; £100 - £350 per month for your first six months on Long Term LEAP. Experience Week plus three months of the Living in Community Guest Programme are prerequisite.

Often we find names we know on the address stickers – old friends who have lived here in the past, people with whom we spent good times together when they were on programmes, or even our own family members. These are good opportunities to stop for a moment and send our warm thoughts. We hope our brochure inspires you.

Findhorn Intensive

– A 15-Month Modular Programme Residential weeks for this programme: 8 - 14 December 2012, 2 - 8 March 2013, 1 - 7 June 2013, 7 - 13 September 2013, 7 - 13 December 2013, 8 - 14 March 2014 (This programme will start again in September 2014) This is a 15-month enquiry in applied spiritual living, over six residential weeks at Findhorn, with peer group support and individual mentoring between times. If you have been touched by Findhorn and want to bring this experience more fully into your everyday life, we invite you on this heart opening journey. In it, you will: • deepen and strengthen your connection with your inner self, while engaging with the challenges and rigours of daily life • open to new possibilities for living relationships, and engaging creatively with all that surrounds you • discover healthy ways to bring your unique contribution to the world, positively adding to the ecology of life

individual and collective practices and wisdom. We explore the frameworks of Incarnational Spirituality and Process Oriented Psychology to help us understand and practise living our lives consciously. Steered by the group’s particular interests, we draw on the experience and inspiration of Findhorn to engage in new possibilities for sustainability in the areas of spirituality, creativity, ecology, culture and economy. When you are back home, in-between these weeks, you continue to deepen, ground and apply the learning. Regular peer group meetings, a mentor, and resource materials support you in this. The Findhorn Intensive supports you to find ways to open to your own intuition and spiritual connection, to attune to the world around you and to realise new possibilities of relating and co-creating with other people, nature, and life in all aspects. It invites you to reassess your life, find greater fulfillment, and bring more love into our world.

The group journey is an opportunity to be lovingly held, supported, challenged and encouraged while you reflect and engage with your life more deeply.

For comprehensive information on the themes and particulars of the programme, as well as how to apply, please visit www.findhorn.org/intensive

During our residential weeks, we come together and create an environment in which to enquire, discover and practise. We draw on Findhorn’s mystery school approach, as well as our

What they say about this programme.... Ángel: It has been a space of growing and exploring through different approaches. One of the best ideas is having three months to live what we experienced intensively in a week. The peer groups and the mentoring sessions within these three months have been real support to my process.

Ulf: The Findhorn Intensive helped me to see what already is in my life, that life-affirming living doesn’t mean that I have to make a big change through hard struggle. 14

David: For anybody thinking of doing the Intensive ... stop thinking and just do it.

Andrea: Findhorn Intensive for me was what its name says: intense! I was able to come back to a deep spirituality in my everyday life. It was good to travel back and forth anchoring the vital experiences of Findhorn in the group again and again and very helpful for changing my life at home. Sara: I feel more in touch with living from my centre in ways which nourish and restore balance. If you want encouragement to embrace life and the subtle realms with more sensitivity and joy, and be part of a group committed to deepening and growing the Findhorn spiritual impulse, this is a wonderful programme to sign up for!

Reaching Out

BUILDING BRIDGES

Our Building Bridges programme to reach out to new friends and partners, serving an ever-broadening spectrum of people and organisations, continues in 2013. We hope to provide the opportunity for positive change for more and more people in diverse circumstances, through the heart-opening living and learning experiences offered here at Findhorn.

Building Bridges has also established a new holistic learning stream, Findhorn Co-Ability Project, bringing together in community people with diverse abilities. The project aims to focus on the many positive elements adults with learning disability can bring to community, and provides a platform for participants to develop their potential and offer their gifts.

Our two sites, The Park and Cluny Hill, provide a rich interactive environment for everything from a short taste of Findhorn magic to a full 7-day experience.

We also offer a yearly 4-day programme where people from business, NGOs and charities, who are interested in exploring issues of sustainability, meet themselves, meet Findhorn and meet each other – by invitation only (please email building. [email protected] if you’d like to be considered). We are also open to creating bespoke experiences for business teams.

We offer A Great Day Out and residential weeks for: • school groups • socially excluded groups including those with learning disabilities • local and general groups of all types For groups wanting to learn from our 50 years of building community, perhaps with a particular theme, we offer 2 - 4 day residential or non-residential tailor-made experiences. Our range of options include building self-confidence and social skills, spiritual practice, team building, discovery games, learning about permaculture and renewable energy, co-creation with nature, group projects in the garden and building sustainable community. We also offer residential Experience Weeks to established groups. Welcoming Diversity The Building Bridges team are running a new programme for disengaged young people from our local area, the Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP), with our partners Action for Children and Moray Council. It brings young people ages 16 - 19 to the Foundation, one day each week for three months. Through this they experience an array of new activities including pottery, gardening, working in the kitchen, chopping wood, playing games and having quiet times alone. The participants build trust, grow in self-confidence, learn about responsibility, come together as a team and find their own voice. Further YEP programmes are planned for 2013. 18

For a full menu of activities we offer, visit www.findhorn.org/group-visits or email us at [email protected] We look forward to welcoming you.

4-Week Findhorn Foundation Training in Holistic Awareness and Astroshamanism Franco Santoro 4-week intensive or individual weeks (except for week 3).   Holistic Awareness accepts that all aspects of life are intimately related and part of the same whole, and that we can find our sense of purpose only if we acknowledge the wider reality in which we exist. Astroshamanism is a holistic system of healing for expanding human perception by integrating the basic principles of shamanism with experiential astrology, contemporary archaic mystery traditions and the spirit of the Findhorn Community. This month-long intensive is designed for newcomers as well as to consolidate previous experiences with shamanism or related methods. Completion of the programme provides a solid basis for advanced work.

EarthSings

Singing for Unity and Wellbeing Easter Event: 30 March - 5 April

Our commitment to singing as a path of healing, celebration and union through spirit is the impetus for the Foundation to once again host an EarthSings conference. Through harmony singing, mantra chanting, devotional and community singing in nature, we intend to create a healing field within which we can achieve transformation through song. As Ella Fitzgerald once said, “The only thing better than singing is more singing.”  Hosted by Peter Vallance with contributions from local song teachers Bill Henderson, Kate O’Connell and Barbara Swetina, the conference will feature daytime workshops, large and small-scale participatory events, and evening concerts for which negotiations with well known Scottish and Gaelic singers are currently taking place. These concerts and other evening participatory events will be open to the local community and we look forward to joyful singing filling the Hall every night. We warmly welcome you to join with us in song.

If you cannot teach me to fly, teach me to sing. – JJ.M.Barrie M Barrie

Presenters include: Kathy Bullock, teacher of African-American sacred music, brings her deep appreciation of music’s beauty, power and spiritual possibilities. 16 - 22 March Pathways to the Self Maria Olsthoorn, Susan Miles

Ali Burns, Song maker and Community Choir director, is fascinated by the sound of voices singing and loves the way that singing can unburden people from daily life.

The focus of this week is a rich journey of deep self-enquiry. Our intention is to teach you an effective map for your transformational journey and facilitate the healing of your core wounding and defenses. With the group we will support the emergence of your joyful and authentic healing presence. You may find that your life transforms as a result.

Fionntulach, spiritual leader of the Ceile De, will teach Fuinn, Gaelic chants rooted in pre-Christianity, which seek to harmonise the spiritual, otherworldly, and physical parts of ourselves.

Unconditional Love

A 5-day Intensive with Michael Roads

6 - 10 April On a fundamental level, humanity lives a life of illusions. We exploit ourselves and the planet in the manner of a species that is going insane. We are, however, in a unique period of living transition. The energy of the world is making a shift and we have the opportunity to move from the caterpillar forward to the butterfly stage of humanity. The way each of us lives our lives as human beings will determine whether we reach this stage. To experience unconditional love means a huge consciousness shift in our relationship with ourselves, with the people of the world, and with the nature of the world. It means embracing ‘newness’ and releasing the ‘more of the same’ syndrome in order to move forward.

28

Income related price: £595 / £725 / £945 Game of Transformation - 7 days Please see description on page 21.

Forward is: • releasing fear • taking responsibility for yourself • challenging only if you decide it is • the only place that is new • self-empowering • the way of creation Forward is unconditional love. To choose love means you have to live love. By living this creative love you are recreating yourself. Michael looks for ways to present his intensives that are new and in the moment, so it is difficult to describe an actual process. Each group has its own dynamic, and it is this dynamic in consciousness to which Michael responds. “Words cannot express the emotions and the highs I experienced at the Intensive, but I’ll try anyway. It felt like I changed trains from a local to an express with a beautiful view. Once again, thank you for the opportunity to grow again in leaps and bounds.” – Gerda, previous Intensive participant Income related price £535 / £665 / £875

Through dance and song, poetry and prayer, time in nature, meditation and shamanic journeying we will explore, realign with and celebrate these great cosmic forces, creating balance and harmony within and without. JUNE - JULY Conference of the International Communal Studies Association Communal Pathways to Sustainable Living – Past, Present and Future Option 1: 22 - 28 June / Option 2: 26 - 28 June (3 days) Conference organiser: Dr Graham Meltzer Growing public awareness of the human causes of climate change is bringing with it a critical need for information about, and demonstration of, low impact sustainable lifestyles. In response to this need, we are pleased to be hosting the 11th international conference of ICSA, the International Communal Studies Association. With a focus on the link between community and sustainability, the conference will bring together communal scholars and community activists from around the world. Showcasing sustainable lifestyles within communal settings, this is a rare opportunity in the unique setting of the Findhorn Ecovillage to share academic research and lived experience of collective life in intentional communities. Catering for researchers wishing to present and hear scholarly papers, and for people who live communally and are seeking to gather with like-minded souls to share ideas, experiences and inspiration, the programme will include parallel sessions of scholarly paper presentations, participatory workshops and celebratory activities such as singing, dancing, storytelling and performance. Our exciting list of presenters includes 80 experts in their field coming from 22 different countries.

There are two options for attending the conference: Option 1 is a full residential week and includes an opportunity for participants to fully immerse themselves in the culture and practice of the Findhorn Foundation and community via a 3-day shorter version of Experience Week. Experience Week is the programme we offer to first-time guests, many of whom find it a poignant, heart-opening and, in some cases, life-changing experience. For further information please see page 6. Option 2 is for the 3-day conference only and is nonresidential. For full details of the options and online registration, please see the conference website at www.findhorn.org/icsa We welcome your participation at what we hope will be a rich and memorable event. Income related prices: Option 1: £625 / £775 / £985 Option 2: £195 / £295 / £395

Joanna Macy - The Work that Reconnects A 6-day Intensive with Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone

29 June - 4 July We live at a time of planetary emergency, perhaps not knowing what to do or feeling despair. The Work that Reconnects strengthens our capacity to give our best response to the social and ecological challenges confronting us. It has helped hundreds of thousands of people around the globe find creativity, solidarity, and courage to act. Drawing from living systems theory, spiritual teachings, and deep ecology, it involves a transformative journey around a spiral of four successive stages (see illustration). When we come from gratitude, we become more present to the life around us and to the many gifts we receive. This also brings a sharper awareness of the vast violation underway. We honour our pain for the world by making space to hear our sorrow, fear, outrage and other feelings in response to what is happening in our world. As we do so, profound caring and interconnectedness with all life are revealed.

Seeing with new eyes, we deepen our recognition of our mutual belonging in the living Earth. We learn to understand the new kind of power this gives and the many ways we can apply this to our participation in the Great Turning to a life-sustaining society. Fresh vision and practical steps are clarified in the final stage of going forth. Come explore with us the hidden depths in each stage of the spiral, where rich meaning and treasures are to be found. JULY

29 June - 26 July Esalen® Massage Technique Johanna Holloman, Perry Holloman Esalen® Massage is a unique form of bodywork developed over the last 40 years at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. This technique is known for its long integrating strokes, creating an experience of deep relaxation supporting the natural ability of body and mind to self-heal. This training provides participants with in-depth experience and practice of basic Esalen Massage techniques, enabling you to give a professional full body massage upon completion of the course. Our study of massage is complemented by daily meditation, yoga and other movement disciplines. Through our daily massage and movement practice, we experience in our own bodies the qualities of aliveness and flowing presence central to this method. This process of self-exploration is a key element of grounding the teaching in the experience of the body itself, and transforms what would simply be a ‘technique’ into a true healing art. The deeper intent of our time together

6 - 12 July Findhorn Nonviolence Intensive Dominic Barter, Kit Miller, Leo Sofer What would it be like to apply the principles of Nonviolent Communication to living in community for a week? To learn by doing, in the nitty gritty of heartbased living with a bunch of people you are still getting to know? Our focus is on finding out what works for human relationships, to move us towards the world we want to live in. Please see our website www.findhorn. org/programme/239 for price details.

is to learn to touch others by first learning to be touched, not only by the hands of our fellow students, but by an expansion of our awareness throughout our own bodies, selves and souls. The environment of the Findhorn Foundation fits well with this method as a path of healing. Participants have the opportunity to experience life in the community, and feel the natural power of the local landscape which so strongly supports inner spiritual awakening. Learning the art of Esalen Massage often changes lives. Whether your intent is to deepen your knowledge of bodywork, or to spend time healing yourself through touching, our time together will stay with you for many years to come. Whatever your intention, join us for this fourweek journey. Our hearts will convey our experience through our hands as we learn to heal ourselves and others through this wonderfully effective method of Esalen Massage. Income related price: £2675 / £2875 / £3075 For this programme a non-refundable deposit of £150 per person is required.

13 - 19 July Right Livelihood: Creating Meaningful Work in Challenging Times 13 - 17 July (5 days) Jonathan Dawson, Satish Kumar

The Longing to Belong Astrid Gude

We live in extraordinary times. Rarely has so much rested on the choices, responses and contributions of one generation. How can we rise to the challenge of the moment, seeing opportunity in place of burden; call to vocation and service in place of fear and drudgery?

“As soon as you rest in the house of your own heart, doors and windows begin to open outwards to the world,” writes Pat O’Donohue. Every so often we feel homeless in ourselves, disconnected from the natural world and lacking a sense of purpose and meaning. Using a variety of tools from Gestalt work and spiritual traditions we embark on a journey that invites us to reconnect and belong.

This week offers opportunities for meditation, reflection, pilgrimage and exploration of the role of work in today’s world. We will spend time alone in nature, walking in the Scottish Highlands as a support to connect with your gifts, to deeply understand the nature of today’s challenges and emerging opportunities, and to develop clarity about the nature of the unique contributions you can make.

Festival of Sacred Dance, Music and Song 20 - 26 July

with special guest Erik Bendix plus Laura Shannon, Susanne Anders Bartholomäi, Bill Henderson, Kate O’Connell, Rory O’Connell, Barbara Swetina, Peter Vallance and Hanna Morjan Sacred/Circle Dance brings together traditional dances from around the world with contemporary choreographies. This year our special guest is Erik Bendix who will share Klezmer and Balkan dances. Klezmer is the traditional music of Eastern European Jews, played at weddings and other celebrations. Erik has played a significant role in the revival of traditional Yiddish (or Klezmer) dance in the USA and brings extensive knowledge of dances from Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia and the Ukraine. He sees dancing as a way to share beyond words, to understand other cultures by standing in their shoes and learning to move as they do. Erik enjoys working with live musicians and teaches each dance as a whole experience rather than as an assembly of parts. Erik comes highly recommended by Laura Shannon who will offer traditional Greek and Armenian ritual dances. These dances can be understood as a language of symbols and patterns, which when danced transmit hidden wisdom and healing energy. Kostantis Kourmadias will provide live music with Laura. Susanne Anders Bartholomäi will share a daily attunement with DanceMeditation which allows us to become fully present and aware of our bodies while focusing our minds and opening our hearts.

In addition to the daily dance workshops there’s the chance to participate in the Festival Choir with Kate O’Connell, or in the Orchestra with Bill Henderson (bring an instrument!). Together these groups provide music for the final night’s community dance and celebration. Dancing to live music is an important part of the Festival experience. Evenings will feature Gadje Dilo, the O’Connell’s Band and other musicians, with dances taught by Peter Vallance and our guest teachers. A Scottish Ceilidh Dance will be held by Peter, and on Sunday morning Barbara Swetina will lead the Taizé service. We look forward to welcoming you to share with us the joy and delight of dancing together in community. Income related price: £645 / £775 / £985

Join Mike Leigh and Iain Davidson in a unique exploration of how we can use key skills and techniques from NLP to accelerate our personal growth and development by modelling spirituality.

Awakening to Change – A 5Rhythms® Waves Dance Workshop Deborah Jay-Lewin As the world changes around us we are called to dance deeper into our creative selves, to be honest about our vulnerability and access our strengths. Will we contract in fear or expand with trust and cooperation? We use the 5Rhythms® practice, as developed by Gabrielle Roth, to sustain and inspire us, to deepen our ability to surrender, to embrace change and experience the solidarity of dancing in community. Income related price: £595 / £725 / £945 Nature Connection Antonio Palmieri, Inga Ongaro, Isabella Guerrini

How would it feel to be at ease in your body, trusting its wisdom and feeling free to enjoy yourself as a sensuous, vibrant being? To reconnect with your life force and reawaken to the beauty and pleasure of being alive, moving and relating? Biodanza leads us gradually into deeper contact with, and permission to believe in, the goodness of our instinctive passions, expressing the emotions that arise from that experience.

What’s nature? Are we aware that we are part of it? Through this inspiring journey we’ll experience together how easy it is to get in touch with all forms of life, that with us form nature. We’ll learn to look at events as they unfold, and the glory and wonder that comes from nature, and to accept it all with a heart full of grace. In both English and Italian. SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER

Beyond our ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. – Rumi

28 September - 4 October

Contributors include:

Conference Organisers: Robin Shohet, Ilsemarie Weber, Ben Fuchs

Sobonfu Somé will lead a powerful grief ritual, connecting unresolved grief, self-forgiveness and forgiveness of others.

Most of us long to let go and move on, but even knowing that it is in our best interests, we struggle to do this. What would our inner and outer worlds look like if we opened our hearts to a deep acceptance of ‘what is’, as opposed to what we and others think ‘should be’?

Richard Olivier will present his work on Family and Organisational Constellations to help our understanding of the deeper nature of conflict, and will use Mythodrama and Shakespeare’s The Tempest to explore forgiveness.

Seeing forgiveness as a means to undo much of the personal suffering that keeps us stuck, and self-forgiveness as a vital practice for healthy and happy living, we desire to hold a space with conference participants in which to examine questions such as: • Forgiveness – what is it, and importantly, what is it not? • Why is it so difficult? • The role of self-forgiveness • Why does revenge play so big a part in our lives? • What practical tools can help us move on? • What can we learn from people who have forgiven against all the odds? • How would our lives be different if we committed ourselves to letting go of all our hurts? • Where do we ourselves need forgiveness? Can we face and accept that we have betrayed/hurt as well as have been hurt/betrayed? Our vision is for the week to be co-created with participants, be experiential and provide a mixture of collaborative methods, input from speakers, live mediation, workshops, ritual and time devoted to practical application. We intend to begin from a place of not knowing and a willingness to have some of our deepest assumptions about ourselves and others questioned. We warmly welcome you to participate in a collaborative inquiry with us. Income related price: £625 / £775 / £985 Please note: We are offering a £100 earlybird discount for bookings made and paid in full before 3rd April 2013.

Whatever form your contribution took, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We truly could not have achieved all that we have without your support. These are just a few of the milestones from the past 18 months achieved as a direct result of your support: • built a new fully accessible, eco friendly workshop space • sponsored 214 bursaried places • launched three new educational outreach programmes for vulnerable adults in Scotland • built two new eco mobiles for our elders and young families • installed a biomass boiler – to reduce our dependency on oil and gas and reduce our fuel bills • renovated our retreat house, Traigh Bhan, on the Isle of Iona • updated our IT systems • repaired the roof, and refurbished bathrooms and bedrooms, at Cluny

Together we are touching hearts and minds around the world Since the beginning of the Findhorn Foundation as a spiritual community over 50 years ago, thousands of people have come from all over the world to explore new ways to live in harmony with life and nature. Today a key aspect of our work is providing learning opportunities through experiencing community, inspiring and changing the lives of people who come here. In order to keep participation in our programmes as affordable and accessible as possible, we have to find creative ways to fund many of the day-to-day essentials that sustain the community and its structures and services. Thanks to the support of our worldwide network of donors, we are still thriving more than 50 years later and continuing to offer the Findhorn experience to the world.

Leave a Lasting Legacy You can help nurture the work of the Findhorn Foundation in the world by remembering the Foundation in your will.
