Message from
the General Manager Steve Lamontagne General Manager
We are having a very busy summer. We have twice as many summer members as anticipated and they are all actively using the club. Please welcome them. Equity membership numbers are holding steady and we are fast approaching the 525 cap to where we will start a waiting list to join the club. Junior camps as well as golf and tennis academies are seeing their greatest participation ever as well as our swim team program. Last year we did a survey asking the members what they wanted to see for dining and entertainment and based on the survey results, we will have new venues for outside dining as the temperature gets cooler to enjoy live entertainment and a more casual atmosphere for dining. To fulfill these requests, we are busy with many capital projects going on this summer and we are continuously trying to improve the aesthetics of the club. Our major project for the year is the outdoor bar that is scheduled to start mid to late July. We will also be painting the exterior of the clubhouse facilities and metal roofs, fixing
drainage issues on the courses, and remodeling the Challenge course bathrooms to name a few of the various projects going on through the remainder of the year. After completing the five year capital project on the Classic course for the irrigation and regrass, we are starting to see the best conditions ever at this club. We are down to approximately 30 bunkers to renovate and we are in schedule to fix those by the end of the year. As always, I want to thank everyone that continues to support the club and like to see you here enjoying yourselves. Keep an eye out for the many improvements that will be completed over the next few months and dining and events scheduled to make your experience here even more enjoyable.

Suntree Country Club continues to be a great place to spend the summer months. We have experienced tremendous participation in our Summer Golf Memberships this year in both the Unlimited and Limited Access Golf options. Our Summer Social membership has also seen an increase in participation from the previous year. 74% of our summer members, including Golf and Social, are new to membership at Suntree. We are thrilled to have so many new area residents enjoy all that Suntree has to offer. I would like to thank our Equity members for welcoming our Summer members including our Board of Directors and staff who attended the Summer Golf orientation last month. We look forward to welcoming many of our Summer Golf and Social members as Equity members in September as they find the pristine course conditions and amenities difficult to leave.

Golf Course News Jon Cockerham
Director of Golf Course Maintenance
We made many improvements to both golf courses earlier this year. Most of our focus was on bunker renovations and some drainage improvements. We plan on continuing these types of projects throughout the rest of 2016. Our goal has been to renovate all 141 bunkers on the two courses over a 4 year period. We currently have less than 40 remaining. The process is very labor intensive and includes the removal of the older contaminated sands, repairing or improving the internal drainage components, reshaping the bunker contours for better visibility and finally the addition of new angled sand that has less “fried-egg” potential. The typical life span of a newly renovated bunker is dependent on several factors. It may range from 2 years to up to 10 years before certain bunkers need addressing again. Its’ position in relation to water flow during heavy storms, exposure to windy conditions and frequency of golfer use all play a role in a bunkers need for renovation. Those factors also lead to inconsistencies in playability during the day. The most influential factor in a bunkers’ playability is the moisture content of the sand. A bunker that has high exposure to sunlight and wind will dry up much quicker than a shaded or shielded bunker. Much like building a sand castle on the beach, moisture acts as “glue” that holds sand particles together. The more moisture in the sand, the more firm the bounce of your club and vice-versa. If you tee off at 10 a.m. chances are that the sand will be more firm on the early holes than the last few holes you play between 1 and 2 p.m.
because of the sun and wind’s drying effects. This is obviously greatly affected by the day’s weather conditions and the orientation of the bunkers. Pay attention to how the sand feels when you walk into a bunker and begin to address the ball. Are you walking at the beginning of the beach far from the water where the sand is very soft, or are you walking close to the water’s edge where the beach sand is very firm? Make sure you contact your teaching professionals for lessons on how to change your shot making when dealing with these different conditions. It could easily lead to taking 2-3 strokes off of your score! The number of golfing members at our club has been growing, a very positive sign for the health of Suntree Country Club. With more golfers also come more cart traffic, divots and ball marks. Taking pride in one’s course has always been extremely important as far as etiquette is concerned. Please be conscientious of your actions while playing this great game. Proper etiquette as far as repairing ball marks, obeying cart traffic restrictions and signage, filling your divots smoothly with sand and always raking your tracks and shots in bunkers should be something a true golfer never thinks about, he or she does it automatically. Those playing behind you and your golf and maintenance staff will be very thankful.
