Schutt Collection Biography Harold G. Schutt was a civic leader in Lindsay, California, and an amateur historian of Tulare County. Born in 1898 in Sardinia, New York, Schutt moved to Lindsay in 1908 with his family. In 1916 he graduated from Lindsay High School. Schutt went on to the University of California (Berkeley) where he received a degree in political science. Schutt worked for a short period as the assistant city manager of Blumfield, West Virginia, before he returned to Tulare County in 1923. For one year he did publicity work for the Tulare County Farm Bureau. Schutt also acquired a job at Lindsay Ripe Olive Company in 1923. For twenty-eight of his thirty-seven years with Lindsay Ripe Olive Company, he was superintendent for plant operations. After his retirement, Schutt grew olive and citrus trees on his own farm, Schutt Ranch. Schutt was active in the community of Lindsay. He eventually became a leading figure in the study of the history of Tulare County. He oversaw a series of articles appearing in the Lindsay Gazette on the history of Lindsay. He was active in the Tulare County Historical Society, founding and editing its historical journal, Los Tulares. He also helped to found the Conference of California Historical Societies, serving a term as its president. Schutt devoted much of his time after his retirement to the study of local history, until his death in 1985. Scope and Content Note The Harold G. Schutt Collection measures 25 linear feet and dates from 1846 to 1994. The collection is arranged in four series: Harold G. Schutt, Olives, Tulare County, and Photographs. This collection is the result of Schutt’s interest in Tulare County history and his interest in some aspects of that history, for example, the logging industry, local agriculture, and the history of his adopted hometown, Lindsay. The Harold G. Schutt series (1913-1985) is arranged in two subseries, Personal papers and Schutt Ranch. The Personal papers subseries primarily contains correspondence to and from Schutt, his daily planners, some of Schutt’s literary productions, and a substantial folder on his graduating class in high school (1916). The daily planners are grouped into twelve folders, but each planner is a separate year. The Schutt Ranch subseries contains the records which Schutt kept relating to his citrus and olive farm after his retirement from the Lindsay Ripe Olive Company. Included are records of Schutt’s dealings with the Sierra Citrus Association (mostly annual reports and financial records), as well as some of the financial and legal records of his own farm. The annual reports and the report on operations are both grouped into folders, but each item is a separate year. Schutt took a number of the photographs in the Photographs series, some of which are of him and his family.

Schutt Collection Scope and Content Note (cont.) The Olives series (1894-1994) is arranged in two subseries, California and General information. The California subseries contains information—primarily newspaper clippings, periodical articles, and printed materials—on olives in California generally. It also contains information on olives and olive companies in Tulare County specifically, along with selected records from Lindsay Ripe Olive Company. The General information subseries contains information on the growing, harvesting and processing of olives in both the United States and selected countries in Europe, specifically, Italy and Spain. It contains government publications, newspaper clippings, and publications of the University of California. Of special interest is a short paper promoting Tulare County olives at the 1939 world’s fairs in San Francisco and New York, which is located in box 5. The Tulare County series (1846-1991) contains general information on the history of Tulare County. This series is divided into a number of different subseries, the most substantial of which are Agriculture, Biographical information, Cities and towns, Historic sites and Natural sites. The Agriculture subseries consists of the materials Schutt collected on various aspects of agricultural history and products produced in Tulare County. The Biographical information subseries consists of materials relating to the lives of Tulare County individuals and families, and also includes correspondence to Schutt, newspaper clippings and some diaries and family histories. The Cities and Towns, Historic sites and Natural sites subseries all consist primarily of newspaper clippings. A large portion of the Cities and Towns subseries has an extensive section on the city of Lindsay. A few items in the section on Lindsay are stored in tubes. The Photographs series (1880-1985) contains a number of photographs, negatives and slides dealing with the history of Tulare County. It is divided into two subseries: Indexed photographs and Non-indexed images. The Indexed photographs cover the largest portion of the series. An item-level index, divided into a number of topical sections, is available. Contact sheets and negatives are also available. The two most extensive sections are Logging, which contains many photographs dealing with the logging industry in the Sierra Nevada in the eastern part of Tulare County, and Agriculture, which contains various pictures dealing with agriculture in Tulare County during the first half of the twentieth century. There is also a large section dealing with the town of Lindsay. The Non-indexed images are not included in the item-level index. They are divided by subject categories and formats. This subseries contains some photographs, most of which deal with the opening of the Tulare County Historical Society’s history museum. It also contains forty-four panoramic prints. There are also a number of color and black-and-white glass lantern slides, negatives, and 35mm color slides as well. Also included are some unidentified negatives that do not have prints. The slides and negatives both cover roughly the same topics as those in the Indexed photographs.
