PRESIDENT’S LETTER, “Changing of the Guard” We have come to a time in a chapter’s life where terms of the members of our leadership team, the Executive Committee, are coming to an end. These people have given countless hours and much energy to the smooth operation of our organization. Personally, it is very difficult to “say goodbye” to each of them, but it really isn’t goodbye. They will still be here but in a much different capacity. We will take time to honor them and their service to Lehigh Chapter/ PASR at the November Luncheon. The terms of the following officers end December 31, 2016: Recording Secretary, Joann Bedics; Treasurer, William Bedics; Assistant Treasurer, Eileen Kern and Immediate Past President, Daisy Pearson. The terms of the following committee chairs are also ending December 31, 2016: Members Benefits & Services, Nancy Schultz; Educational Support, Joan Glass; Auditing, Hal Hagemann; Public Relations, Newsletter Editor, Webmaster, Membership Database Secretary, Ruth Roeder. This is Ruth’s last newsletter and she is taking us “down memory lane” to commemorate our 50th Anniversary. Please take some time to thank each and every one for A JOB WELL DONE. Linda Bortz, President Lehigh Chapter

At each PASR meeting, the Social Services Memorial Honor Fund Committee has two “Donate a Dollar” jars where you can make a contribution in honor of or in memory of a PASR member. These donations are used to help members across the state who are ill or confined, a victim of a catastrophe or have experienced severe financial distress. Please stop by our table at the November luncheon to complete a form and make a tribute. An additional opportunity to pay tribute is to complete the Memorial Honor Fund form on your table and mail it to the address indicated on the form. A BRIEF HISTORY OF LEHIGH CHAPTER Lehigh Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees has served public school retirees in Lehigh County since 1966. The Chapter celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2006. Our parent organization was born in 1937. Pennsylvania Retired Public School Employee Association (PRPSEA) was the first name given to the Association. Then in 1984, the Associations changed its name to the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR). The Association set the following six objectives:      

Keep interest in schools Fellowship Emphasis on the forward Concern for teacher welfare Recognition of founders of annuity system Legislative effort to maintain annuity fund

In 1940, PASR invited the creation of chapters across the state. Our Lehigh Chapter organized in 1966. At that time, the meeting/luncheons met at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Hanover Avenue. In 1989, President Mildred Klingaman contracted with Days Inn Conference Center (now Rodeway) to cater our luncheons. At the 1995 PASR State Convention, PASR recognized Lehigh Chapter as the "Outstanding Chapter" in the state. The leadership of then President Sal Gambone and the work of his Executive Committee made this honor possible. Edna Mest, our Chapter president from 1973 to 1975, served a two-year term as PASR's State President beginning in 1978. In 1992, in recognition of her service, PASR Headquarters posthumously hung her portrait, in the Mechanicsburg headquarters hallway. Lehigh Chapter member Ardis Gaumer painted the portrait. After several years of investigation and debate, the Executive Committee voted to move the General Membership Meeting to the Iron Lakes Country Club on a trial basis. The year was 2010 and we continue to meet there for information, good food, and fellowship.

LEHIGH CHAPTER CHORUS First Presentation September General Membership Meeting 2008 Under the Direction of Ron and Gerry Mosemann -Photo by Tom Roeder In June 2007, then Region 2 Director Phyllis Seems challenged then President Ruth Roeder to devise a project for submission by July 1, 2007 so that Region 2 could win the one time separate monetary Creativity Award offered by PASR that year. (Goal 1. Expand/Improve Services to Others and Goal 2. Expand/Improve Social Opportunities for Members) Lehigh Chapter invited members to sing holiday songs for the residents of Phoebe Terrace/Home in Allentown on December 4, 2007. Nancy Klinesdinst, then SSMHF co-chair, made the arrangements, contacted interested members with the date and time, and received the support of Ron Mosemann as director and Mary Ann Tremba as pianist. Our impromptu group sang TO and WITH the attending residents for a half hour. As we were leaving, Nancy and Mary Ann commented on how well we sounded and proposed that we form a Lehigh/PASR chorus for future performances. A sign-up sheet was available at both the 2008 March and May general membership meetings and 30 names of possible chorus members were gathered. Ruth spoke with members Ron and his wife Gerry, both retired East Penn music teachers, about helping with the project. Ron agreed to direct and Gerry agreed to be pianist. They decided on a date (May 27, 2008) and location (their home church at St. John’s UCC, Emmaus, PA) for the first rehearsal. The great news is Lehigh Chapter won the PASR creativity award for 2007-2008. Our chapter salutes both the past and present participating members who proudly shared their musical talents over the years. Look forward to musical memories of the 60’s at our November 50th Anniversary Celebration presentation. –Ruth Roeder

ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED PASR Mission Statement – To serve others and help one another enjoy retirement.

Logo Description -A Reflection of PASR’s Beginnings in the Late 1930’s-

Lehigh Chapter member Sarita Witko, in collaboration with her post-graduate architectural student son Alexander, completed a design for the 2007 PASR Convention hosted by Region 2 that reflects the theme “Platinum Jubilee –PASR’s 70th Anniversary”. The tall structure represents an anniversary candle rising tall on a firm foundation with 70 (years) as the flame. The brilliant star burning brightly behind the flame is the glow of PASR’s past successes and its determination to be aglow in the future. The thirteen additional tiny stars represent the sparks of light the ever-growing regions contribute through their dedication to the association and its purpose. The design, reflective of the Art Deco design movement from 1910 to 1939, is both practical and simple. It glamorously adorned the convention program cover, the banquet cover, and the hospitality bag.
