“Bach’s Preludio in E Major opens the sixth and last set from his Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. In arguably the brightest sounding key on the instrument, this joyous piece features some of Bach’s more virtuosic writing for the violin with a dazzling array of sixteenth notes and fast string crossings, creating rich harmonies along the way.” Born in Tehran, BIJAN SEPANJI is a multi-faceted performer and educator based in Toronto. A member of the Ton Beau String Quartet, he regularly performs new compositions by up-and-coming composers as well as standards from the classical repertoire. This past season Bijan performed a number of concerts with tbsq in Toronto including at the Music Garden, Hart House Great Hall, the Alliance Française, University of Toronto and University of Guelph. Together, they have collaborated with Spectrum Music, Iranian Composers of Toronto (icot) and other composers such as William Rowson and Alex Goodman. Trained at Indiana and McGill universities, Bijan has had the opportunity to work with artists such as James Campbell, Mark Kaplan, Mimi Zweig, Jorja Fleezanis, Miriam Fried, Jonathan Crow and many others. His orchestral experience includes performances with Indianapolis and Kitchener-Waterloo and Thunder Bay symphonies, Hamilton Philharmonic, Toronto Concert Orchestra and the National Academy Orchestra in Hamilton. Bijan is a member of Sistema Toronto, a program aimed at bringing at-risk youth into a safe and positive community by means of orchestral music, choir and Pachanga (Cuban drumming).

“The Andante of Bach’s Solo Violin Sonata no.2 represents deep introspection and contemplation. Written in two distinct voices, the lower maintaining a bass ostinato throughout the movement, while the upper sings an aria-like melody, similar to the second movement of his “Italian” Harpsichord Concerto. Bach illustrates that the concept of virtuosity can be perfectly embodied in the calm, tranquil counterpoint featured in the Andante.” STEVE SANG KOH is currently the Palmason Graduate Fellow in Violin, and the teaching assistant to professor Annalee Patipatanakoon at the University of Toronto. “This Sarabande was the first piece by Bach I learned as a child. The use of C Major allowed for the whole cello to resonate, which caused me to fall in love with the instrument at that very point.” Cellist BRYAN LU is a dedicated chamber musician, orchestral performer, and teacher. Bryan has served as principal cellist for numerous youth orchestras, and at the age of 15, was the youngest member of the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra. That same year, he was invited to debut as a soloist with the Port Credit Chamber Strings, performing Haydn’s second Cello Concerto in D Major. Bryan has performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weil Hall, Symphony Space, and Staller Center for the Arts in New York and at many festivals including the International Musical Arts Institute, the Beethoven Institute, QuartetFest@Laurier, Orford Arts Centre Academy, and the Toronto Summer Music Festival. MATTHIAS McINTIRE (Premise for Solo Viola) Composer, violinist, violist, and music educator, Matthias McIntire is active in a broad spectrum of contexts and styles. Currently in his second year as a dma candidate in composition at the University of Toronto under the guidance of Christos Hatzis, Matthias was awarded first prize in the Lyra Society’s 2016 Costello Competition for Composition, received an Ontario Graduate Scholarship to fund his graduate compositional work, and was selected as the 2015-16 Composer-in-Residence for the University of Toronto Concert Orchestra. For two years, he was a member of the Real Vocal String Quartet as violist, vocalist, and composer, touring extensively across America, performing and leading masterclasses in improvisation, composition, and contemporary string playing at such institutions as Scripps College, Eastern Illinois University, and the Longy School of Music of Bard College. In 2016, he released a new cd with rvsq called “Slacker Ridge.” Matthias has received commissions from the University of Toronto Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco’s conductorless chamber orchestra One Found Sound, The View from Bernal Hill, Vocallective, Real Vocal String Quartet, The Guerrilla Composers Guild, Phonochrome, Andres Vera (cellist of Quartet San Francisco), as well as pianist Emily Rho and cellist Sarah Gans. Current commissions include innovative contemporary dance choreographer Angela Blumberg, The One Found Sound Wind Quintet, and San Francisco based chamber ensemble LiveOak. A note from Matthias on tonight’s work: Premise for solo viola (2013) commissioned by violist Clio Tilton, was a quintessential social media phenomenon. Surfing my Facebook news feed one day, I saw a post:

“15–20 minute solo viola program – ideas? Anyone want to write me a short beautiful piece?” I contacted her immediately and heard back within half an hour. “Yes!” Deadline? “Next Monday” Oh, a whole week! I asked her what sort of piece she was looking for and she said to compose something “joyful, with a little sparkle”. This instructive tidbit became the genesis of the piece, and the opening character marking. The rest, as they say, is history. ANDREW DOWNING (Kontrabas Semaisi) Andrew Downing is a Toronto based double bass player, cellist, composer and educator born in London, Ontario in 1973. He plays primarily in the creative jazz scene in Canada, but also performs classical chamber music, improvised music, folk and roots music, and world music. Most recently, he has started a ‘quiet jazz’ ensemble of cello, alto saxophone, lap steel guitar, vibraphone, bass and drums called Otterville that will release its first recording in the fall of 2016. He also has a collaborative project in Istanbul, Turkey with Ud (Turkish lute) player Güç Basar Gülle that incorporates Ottoman Classical music in a collection of new compositions for ud, cello, percussion and kaval (a Turkish folk instrument). Their first album Anahtar was released in 2013 to critical acclaim. He also has a collaborative multi-media project with Canadian songwriter John Southworth and visual artist Yesim Tosuner called Easterween featuring songs written by John and arranged by Andrew for his seven-piece chamber ensemble. He also leads his chamber-jazz ensemble Melodeon, which plays live scores for silent films such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Phantom of the Opera (with choir), Maciste in Hell, Impossible Voyage and The Shock. As a composer, Andrew has written pieces for the Nordic Folk group Ensemble Polaris, banjo player Jayme Stone, The Vancouver Bach Choir, Ensemble Meduse, Toca Loca and The Prince George Symphony, and has written arrangements for Patricia O’Callaghan, The Gryphon Trio, The Annex Quartet and The Art of Time Ensemble. He has won two Juno awards – one for his own recording Blow The House Down with his former group Great Uncles of the Revolution, and one with the Vancouver-based group Zubot and Dawson. He has also won two West Coast Music Awards, a Socan Award, and the Grand Prix de Jazz from the Montreal Jazz Festival. Andrew currently teaches double bass, composition and improvisation at the University of Toronto and has taught at Wilfred Laurier University, the Banff Centre’s Jazz Workshop and the Creative Music Workshop in Halifax.

MATHIEU LUSSIER (Le Dernier Chant d’Ophélie) A versatile musician with a commanding grasp of early repertoire, Mathieu Lussier is increasingly in demand as a guest conductor in Canada and abroad. Appointed by les Violons du Roy as Conductor-in-residence in 2012, and Associate Conductor in 2014, Lussier has led the orchestra in numerous programs both in Quebec, and on tour in greater Canada, the United States and Mexico. Previous appointments include Artistic Director of the Lamèque international baroque music Festival, where he served from 2008 to 2014. in 2014, Lussier was awarded the Canada Council’s prestigious Jean-Marie-Beaudet conducting prize. Recent engagements include the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Festival international de Lanaudière, Orchestre de la mission saint-Charles, Arion baroque orchestra, Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal and Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal, where he conducted acclaimed productions of Handel’s Acis and Galatea and Grétry’s Zémire et Azor with les Violons du Roy. In 2015, Mathieu Lussier made his conducting debuts with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra (osm), and 2016-17 will see his debuts with Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax. As a soloist, Mathieu has energetically and passionately promoted the modern and baroque bassoon as solo instruments for nearly two decades throughout North America and Europe. He has been associated with such ensembles as Arion Baroque Orchestra (Montreal), les Violons du Roy (Quebec City), Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Toronto), the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, and Apollo’s Fire (Cleveland). He devotes considerable time to chamber music as a member of ensemble Pentaèdre de Montréal. Since 2014, he has been Assistant professor at Université de Montréal. His numerous solo recordings include over a dozen bassoon concertos (Vivaldi, Fasch, Graupner, Telemann, and Corrette), a cd of bassoon sonatas by Boismortier, three cds of music for solo bassoon by François Devienne, and two cds of wind music by Gossec and Méhul. Lussier is also a respected composer, with a catalogue of over 40 titles heard regularly in the concert halls of North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. He has received commissions from artists such as Nadina Mackie Jackson, Guy Few, Lise Beauchamp, and George Zukerman as well as from the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Les Idées Heureuses. Dos Tropicos, a wind quintet written in 2001, has been performed over 100 times in Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom. His compositions are published by TrevCo Music (usa), Accolade (Germany), June Emerson (uk) and Gérard Billaudot (France). Le Dernier Chant d’Ophélie, ballad for Bassoon and String Orchestra, opus 2, was first created in 1997 as a piece for clarinet and strings, then morphed into a woodwind quintet, and took it’s final form in 2008 as a cbc commission for Nadina which she premiered at the Glenn Gould Studio with Alain Trudel conducting the Toronto Chamber Orchestra. Freely inspired by the soliloquies of Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this work is conceived as a soundtrack of her last moments, a rhapsody of passion, pain, sadness and loss.

THE COUNCIL OF CANADIAN BASSOONISTS (cocb) is a nationally registered not-for-profit organization of bassoonists, teachers and students. Supporting students who cannot otherwise afford it, we offer resources such as concerts, lessons, summer camp, Bassoon Days, sheet music, reeds and bassoons. MENTORSHIP Since 2013, the Council of Canadian Bassoonists has paired approved mentors with young players in Moncton, New Brunswick and Scarborough, Ontario, and in 2016, to a senior citizen in Fergus, Ontario. COCB also supplied reed-making tools and reed lessons to a young player in Fredericton, New Brunswick. We have given many master classes and co-sponsored bassoonapalooza 2015 at the University of Toronto. INSTRUMENTS AND REED MAKING TOOLS To date, we have received four very good older bassoons (40–80 years old) and we are raising money to by two new Fox bassoons for students who wish to continue to University. Our most recent gift was a very good plastic Fox student bassoon donated by Caroline Connell. Other instrument benefactors include former bassoonists Diana Wright and Leslie Marshall. Reed making is essential and requires equipment and supplies plus years of study with a good teacher. Hands-on leaning is essential. We provide income tax receipts for the full amount of your donations. Smaller donations help us save towards bigger goals. Larger donations make long-held plans come to life.
