It doesn’t take long until the visitors realize that Rio de Janeiro is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. A beauty that comes from its natural tropical environment where mountains, forests, beaches, lagoons, and vegetation form a dramatic back-drop.
Rio’s other natural attractions include the beaches; the Botanical Garden; the Bay of Guanabara and Paquetá island; and the city’s many parks and gardens. Man has also produced his own attractions which include the city’s many museums and galleries that cover a wide range of topics and styles.
The wonders of Rio can be admired from the top of the Sugar Loaf: impressive in its own height, it guards the entrance of the Guanabara Bay; and also by the feet of the Corcovado Statue that blesses the entire city with his open arms and dominates most of the Carioca skyline.
For all its natural beauty, Rio de Janeiro with a population of around 6 million is still one of the world’s biggest and most populated cities.
There are other equally inspiring mountains such as “Dois Irmãos” and the “Pedra da Gávea” to appreciate. There is also the Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world; while even the man made Park of Flamengo, the world’s largest urban park.

The city’s 90 kilometers of beaches are an integral part of the Rio lifestyle. Rio has beaches that run through its very heart and they are a center of entertainment and relaxation for the residents and visiting population. Participant sports abound on the beaches. Soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, and more traditional Brazilian sports like “peteca” and “futevolei” are played out on the sands of Rio while out to sea, it is the surfers and windsurfers who rule the waves. The pavements and paths that run along the top of the beaches are a playground for the city’s cyclists, roller skaters and the people who simply want to walk, jog or sit and enjoy the scenery from a bench or the comfort of a small beach kiosk while having coconut water. The beaches are also the site for many sport and music events taking place on courts and in stadiums especially constructed on the sand.
The New Years celebration attracts millions of people to Copacabana beach to commemorate the arrival of the New Year and to witness one of the world’s spectacular fireworks displays. Rio de Janeiro is a city of great contrasts which are highlighted by its natural setting. It is a city where historic buildings, churches and monuments sit side-by-side in harmony with modern architecture. Discovered in 1502, Rio de Janeiro still has many vestiges of its historic past on show. Buildings which date from the 16th to the 19th centuries reflect the history and growth of Rio. Nightlife and entertainment in Rio are great! In Lapa and Santa Teresa we can find the most typical bars playing old sambas in a setting that still preserves houses and old mansions. More sophisticated nightclubs can be found in Ipanema, Leblon, Barra and Gávea. Visitors who want to experience a little more of Brazil’s own culture in its many shapes and forms, can enjoy spectacular shows aimed specifically at the tourist. Visitors are encouraged to pay a visit to one of the city’s samba schools (when they start the rehearsals before carnival) or to one of the “gafieiras” with their steamy dancing.
Brazil is best known internationally for Carnival, and the most famous of all the Brazilian Carnival celebrations happens at the sambodrome in Rio de Janeiro. There we can watch or even participate at the parade of the top samba schools. Nearly fifty thousand people parade over two nights and are watched by a crowd of around eighty thousand people. The parade is a competition as any soccer championship and each school has its own followers to cheer them on down the road to victory and glory.

SOUTHEAST | RIO DE JANEIRO Apart from the samba schools’ parade, Carnival also happens in the streets of Rio. It is a mixture of street parades, carnival balls, and contagious revelry which takes over the whole city. Tennis, squash, golf, bowling, sailing, fishing, cycling and horse riding are available in Rio, as are more adventurous activities such as trekking, hiking, scuba diving, skydiving, white water rafting, hang gliding, para-sailing and roller blade. Soccer is Rio’s main spectator sports with crowds of 100,000 or more for the major games at the Maracanã Stadium, the word’s largest stadium. Besides all that, Rio has a great variety of food: tropical fruits, juices, the traditional barbecue and the delicious Feijoada (traditionally served for Saturday lunch by restaurants and hotels) and the Caipirinha not easily forgotten after a trip to Brazil. Eating out ranges from the most sophisticated restaurants, all the way to the humblest of corner bars serving local snacks and delicacies, which are washed down by an ice cold draught beer or one of natural juices.
Where to go for a drink? Academia da Cachaça | Rua Conde de Bernadotte, 26 - Leblon OR Av. Armando Lombardi, 800 Lj 65- Barra. Some of the better “cachaças” are on the bar with good European “aguardentes”. Cachaça is an alcoholic drink made from the juice of the sugarcane. It can be drunk straight or mixed with crushed lemon (or other fruit), sugar and ice, creating the famous “caipirinha”. Devassa | Rua Prudente de Moraes, 416 - Ipanema. The bar offers a very good atmosphere with beautiful and young people and it is an ideal place to have a beer before going out for a nightclub. The bar produces its own beers: the famous Devassa beer that can be blond, red or black. Sindicato do Chopp | Av. Atlântica, 514 - Leme OR Av. Atlantica, 3806 - Copacabana. The bar offers a great view of the beach. It is another great place to try Brazilian beer: the famous “Chopp”, that means draught beer. Not to be missed by serious beer cultists or folks looking for a tavern atmosphere. Bar Veloso | Rua Aristídes Espínola, 44 - Leblon. A traditional Bar-Restaurant where the autors of bossa nova would gather formely in Ipanema. Good drinks and informal talk, also for lunch or dinner. The menu is rich in options for Brazilian snacks and food. Hard Rock Café | Av. Das Américas, 700 3° andar - Barra. Fans of the Hard Rock should not miss it! It has an area of 2000m² with 3 bars, a terrace, nightclub (with varied programs, including shows) and VIP area. It also has the biggest merchandising store of the chain.
